Book Description
"There is always, everywhere, an enormous amount of suffering, but I believe that my duty as an artist is to overcome and alleviate the sterility of despair...I do believe that painting can change the world." David Hockney
In this classic book, one of the most critically acclaimed and universally popular artists of modern times describes his life and work from the mid-1970s to the 1990s. David Hockney has forged a new way of seeing through an intense exploration of a variety of forms. Working in almost every mediumpainting, drawing, stage design, photography, and printmakinghe has stretched the boundaries of all of them.
Hockney has undertaken a singular and ambitious experiment with ways of seeing and ways of representing sight: ranging from his paintings, with their challenges to perspective and brilliant colors, to his vivid multidimensional photo-collages and his fax art, computer printings, and colored laser prints. Constantly questioning, seeking, taking nothing for granted, Hockney has in his own way transformed our understanding of how we perceive the world and how art can alter our vision.
Interweaving detailed accounts of personal experience and artistic endeavor, Hockney has produced here one of the most revealing autobiographies ever of the modern artist. That's the Way I See It is a tour de forcean unparalleled insight into one of the most original creative personalities of our age. 365 illustrations, 315 in color.

Best of Hockney's Books.......2007-08-10
One of the best David Hockney books.
A must have if you are interested in his photo montage method aka joiner method.
great purchase.......2007-07-04
i had read it before and i just had to have it, its an amazing book even if you dont know david hockneys work, the book will make you fall in love with him and his art
A Hockney Treasure House!.......2006-07-19
Fortunately for us, Chronicle Books continues to grace the art bookstores with superb and affordable monographs on art that make a difference. In this completely enchanting, richly illustrated book David Hockney conducts a conversation with us, the reader, sharing his unique and genteel ideas on how he sees and hence composes the paintings and drawings and photographic montages and sets of operas that have so enriched the art world since he first began his long career.
Hockney's writing style is quietly warm, honest, clever, whimsical and very informed. In this truly magnificent volume he is sharing not only his forays into experimental art (his influences from Picasso, Bacon, and the many MANY illustrious friends who fill his life), he also allows us to understand why he experiments with photography (his explosive yet intimate collages of Polaroid rooms of conversing friends are unique to Hockney), his manner of viewing huge spaces and then parceling them onto paper or canvas in a manner that allows us to see vistas not available to the isolated glance, his still lifes, his sketches and portraits of studio visitors - the volume of work is staggering.
Another fine discussion revolves around is spectacular sets for opera (Tristan und Isolde, Turandot, The Magic Flute, A Rake's Progress, Die Frau Ohne Schatten) - these coming from an artist who is almost completely without hearing making music visual!
For all lovers of Hockney's work as well as for those who want to understand why he so very popular, this is one of the best introductions available about the man and his work! Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 06
A Real Beauty !.......2002-11-16
I have been a fan of David Hockney's for many many years and was delighted to find this book. He writes in an understated, easy way about his art and about modern art in general.
Two of the sections were particularly interesting: "Art versus the Art World" and "The Power of Art".
In the book, Hockney explained how places and his personal experiences have influenced his art over the years. He talks about how he is incorporating photography into his work and feels that it is an artist's responsibility to be open to new forms of expression. He says he is an "artist who is always working". I think he is always experimenting too, with different methods of expressing his artistic vision.
He said he asssumes that if he is interested in painting something, others will be interested as well. I loved this viewpoint....in other words, he creates for himself.
This was a lovely book---especially all of the GORGEOUS color reproductions which traced the Hockney's evolution and his journeys.
Now I see it ----- differently!.......2000-10-28
This is an interesting book because it explains the discovery of ways of seeing, and in the process of explaining alters the way the reader sees art.
The challenge of pop art or abstract art is that to the uninitiated it seems gimmicky, and one often goes 'you've got to be kidding?' But with this wonderful exploration of the different ways that art and photography are ways of capturing a point of view, not a reproduction of a point of view. And more importantly, how Mr. Hockney comes to these expressions of point of view you get a glimpse of not only an interpretation of art, but the process of art. I love words and the essays are as magnificent as his art in their clarity and honesty. The section on his photo montages are amazing.

Book Description
Fascinating survey of various undergarments worn by the English over six centuries. Well-documented, scholarly presentation enhanced with over 100 period illustrations depicting laced-up bodice of the 12th century, embroidered linen drawers (1500s), hooped petticoat support in bentwood (c. 1750), footed long drawers (1795), 19th-century bustles, early 19th-century corsets for men, Victorian "bust improvers," much more.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2007-06-14
If you love to learn about historical clothing than this is the book for you.
A good reading reference.......2007-05-02
This is a good history of both mens and womens undergarments. It is solidly written, with more focus on fact and logical history. Not a lot of wit and humor, more writing than pictures or sketches. But a wealth of knowledge spanning medieval times to the 1920's. The author does a good job of illustrating what the purpose of various undergarments were in their time. What effect they were meant to achieve, and the illustrations and photos are plentiful enough to visually support the written material. Though none of it is in color. This would be a good book for research purposes.
Thoroughly pleased with this book.......2006-11-02
I am a costume designer and have had this book for over 10 years.
I recently purchased a copy for one of my student workers who is now
studying costume design at Evansville, IN. I have found it to be
a wonderful source for accurate information on period undergarments.
It has consise information including many photos and illustrations.
Good overview of what's underneath.......2005-09-09
I think this book could have been more in-depth and would have benefitted from more illustrations, but it's a good startng source for reenactors, fashion historians, and people writing about various historical periods. Amazing and interesting overview of what's under there and down there through the ages.
Disappointing Omissions.......2003-12-22
In agreement with some other posters, I found this book disappointing. One obvious omission is covering the Middle Ages to 1939 and not mentioning "codpiece". It would have been more useful as well separated by men's/women's over each time period.

“From the start, Greer’s has been a memorable voice — direct, passionate, un-repentant –– and this collection of her writings is witness to the tenacity of her personal vision. . . . Customer Reviews:
Germaine Greer at her best.......2006-07-15
If you have ever wondered why people make much of Germaine Greer (I often did) this book shows her writing at its best. I think that essays suit Greer better than books. The discipline of a short length doesn't allow her to wander off on tangents and self-indulgence (as much).
The earlier essays are the most appealing being often witty, trenchent, and incisive. I occasionally remember one and laugh. They are of course sometimes dated, and often marred by a certain transcendent smugness. Greer may call for wide-open revolution and anarchy, but she is sometimes appalled by the results. The problem with urging people to be authentic and make decisions for themselves without reference to society and its standards is that they will often make decisions one doesn't approve of.
The later essays take on more serious topics, but they are far less stylish and frequently no more clearly thought out.
Valuable, even essential, for people interested in Greer, but not necessarily recommended for a broad audience.
A Forest Fire of a Book.......2002-07-15
Germaine Greer's sharp mind and strong opinions blaze through these essays like a rampaging fire, sometimes smoking and smoldering, sometimes leaping from the page. Her views on world social and political scenes from the 1950s through the '80s are brutally witty, perceptive and emotional.
Essays about drug and rock scenes re-published from Rolling Stone, Oz and other avant-garde publications explore unconventionality, but her frantic tone and obvious attempt to shock for the sake of shocking weaken her voice. In these early writings, Greer is the Chicken Little of her generation, racing around shouting, "The sky is falling."
Thirty years later, Greer is still racing but her more mature writings show development of a unique set of values and a complexity of spirit. These contemporary essays, like one on women in Cuba and another on resettlement in Ethiopia show passion and an underlying sadness. The adult Greer is still unaware of her own narrowmindedness, a condition that she unhesitatingly condemns in others.
MADWOMAN is definitely worth your consideration. In it Greer is trashy, hysterical, angry and she's also articulate, funny and sagacious. And never dull.
madwoman exhibitionist.......1999-07-02
A collection of the most valuable insight and veracity from one of the most influential and human people in western society. Greers collection of work shows not only how her genuis has developed but shows the diversity and extent of her cause.

In the first adventure in the historic series, Utena faces a sword duel, an unwelcome engagement, and a mandate to revolutionize the world!
Customer Reviews:
Better plotline than the anime.......2005-05-03
I find that the manga of this series is a lot more entertaining and a lot more interesting than the infamous anime. The first volume is actually cool because Utena hasn't come to the academy yet; she and a friend of hers figure out clues she's been sent over the years to find that her 'prince' is at the academy. You find out that she has an aunt she's been living with up to then and that she's not a complete orphan. Then of course she goes to the academy and is thrust into this very strange and seperate world of duelings and winning the Rose Bride as a prize as a step towards "revolutionizing the world." The drawing can be a little wierd, people's faces for exampe are very long and even the women can look a little "mannish." Utena and Anthy as prince and rose bride have a very cute relationship together and along with Chu-chu Anthy's best friend and pet monkey it's all very adorable. As I said though, I like this manga mostly because I can actually make some sense out of it and the mysterious plot lines, unlike the anime which had me banging my head on the wall.
Worst cover, best material........2003-09-10
The 3rd volume of the RGU series has turned out to be the best thusfar... For those of you who were disappointed by the 2nd volume, be prepared for the trip of your life with this one. It. Is. Fantastic. You'll read it more than once, I can guarantee it.
The plot flushes away its fluffy-sweet, gaggingly-predictable overtones to reveal an underlying storyline that gets more dark, horrific, and complex with each passing page (while still keeping an innocent PG rating! Now that's talent!) You learn more about all of the character relationships (and I'm happy to say that Juri is less of a joykill in this one) including the practically unmentioned one between Anthy and her older brother, Akio (who you can't help but love.) Our favorite little Dios boy in the sky also makes a guest appearance, which always calls for extra brownie points, though most readers will get mixed signals about Touga and what his motives really are (I'm trying to avoid spoilers. Can you tell?) The whole story becomes an enigma!
Prepare to be drowned in symbolism and rich imagery--and watch out for that killer cliffhanger at the end. It'll leave you BEGGING for the release of the 4th volume! The artist, Ms. Saito's drawing technique has also changed vastly AND apparently...the images have improved so much that you'll feel HONORED to own a piece of her work! You'll definitely start to appreciate how truly talented and professional she is. Even if you've already seen the series and know the ending (which is going to be interestingly warped by the 5th volume anyway) you'll still get a kick out of this book and the memorable circumstance between Wakaba and Utena as it was meant to be. And, of course, there's a funny little bit about Chuchu at the end and character profiles (of Miki, Juri, and the members of Be-papas) scattered throughout the book.
It's a great buy. No regrets at all. Just mix the right amount of fantasy, romance, slapstick comedy, mystery, and plain old talent, and you'll get the miracle that is RGU 3: To Sprout. :D It's so cool. Really, it is.
The best of the series! ( So far...).......2003-07-16
Going on fromwhere the 2nd book leaves us off on:
IS TOUGA UTENA'S PRINCE?!!!
I'll give you guys just one little spoiler...he's not.
n this volume it basically talks about the Rose Bride and Utena's determination to go through any kind of challenge to see her prince. Deception and Manipulation. The question in this book is who's telling the truth. Most importantly, is Utena so desperate to find her prince that she'll belive just about anybody? We also find out more about Anthy and her brother. Including more in depth detail about World's End. Why the Dios has the power to revolutionize the world. And the most impotant part... Iwillnotspoilthestory Iwillnotspoilthestory..... OK I won't give you a spoiler but it deals about Anthy and her heart "belonging to no one."
AND WHO COULD FORGET THE COMIC RELIEF OF CHU CHU IN THE END?! ( Chu ) All in all this manga is just awsome. The artwork has gotten better and I rccommend it to all shojo or just any manga fan. GO AND BUY IT NOW!
"Revolutionary" is right on the mark.......2003-05-22
I have seen the series in its entirety, and the movie, and I have seen the Japanese manga. Finally READING the manga is a treat.
Having seen the series and movie (I'm praying that they translate the movie manga!), I was prepared for the extremely controversial themes that make this a milestone in the history of anime and manga. There is incest, which is where a brother and sister are a little bit closer than need be; rape (I call it that since Anthy just accepts it as a part of her duties as the Rose Bride ;she's not unwilling, and she's not willing--she's just there)and lesbianism (those of you who have seen the movie know what I am talking about). Death is abstract here; I can't tell you anything more without spoiling some major details of the story. Reality is twisted, as evidenced by the Castle of Eternity, which floats upside down in the air above the dueling arena. Love and friendship come up very rarely, and usually only when dealing with Utena. Power is the ultimate prize--indeed, a girl's life has been sacrificed for the pursuit of power.
The characters play upon each other's emotions, hopes, dreams, insecurities, and fears. Utena fights to protect Anthy, but wavers when Touga implies that he may mean more to her than she thinks. Miki's insecurities and fear drive him to challenge Utena, while Juri's jealousy and hatred are what cause her to raise her sword. Saionji is obsessed, and in his slight insanity, loses reason.
You need to read this series, if only to see what everyone is talking about.
A revolutionary (pun intended) look at the world of manga.......2003-04-15
This is a series like no other. Deeply symbolic, nearly every person, object, and incident means something else on a higher level in addition to the face value. The characters are not just human--they *represent* humanity, both good and bad. They highlight our weaknesses and emphasize our strengths. In this world, power means everything and concepts such as friendship, devotion, and love mean almost nothing. In the pursuit of power and prestige, families and friends are sacrificed for desires. And the life and happiness of one girl are bound to the power to change the world.
This is a controversial series dealing with life, death, change, love, betrayal, belief, truth, and more material concepts such as sex, attraction, and adventure. It messes with your reality, rights it, then scrambles it up again.
For those prudes and parents out there, be forewarned--this does contain incest (love between brother and sister), rape (can you call it that?--Anthy doesn't fight when it happens to her), and lesbianism. That's not to say that it is a bad series--just be warned that their are some controversial themes recurring in the story.
Read this manga or watch the TV show or watch the movie--you will never look at anime or manga the same way again!

Random Facts.......2007-01-03
I am a big fan of random trivia, and this book is perfect for those who love random trivia, with a more medical perspective. While it might make you think twice about how often you wash your hands, its written in a simple but fun fact filled way, so you enjoy it thoroughly
Fun Factoids.......2004-03-25
This book is a fun little trivia book that you can breeze through in a couple of hours. It lists various unlikely things in the environment that can potentially cause illness. I would like to see something that fleshes the entries out a bit more though. A bit more about these odd dangers and what to do about them would be more interesting.
Silly. I was looking for a real solution........2002-11-11
We don't need to know how many dust mites are in our food or how many infectious bacteria entering the air every time someone sneezes. What I had hoped to get in this book is a story of how to help these people. My husband has a daughter who is a severe hypochondriac, and we worry about her. She is ill every week, and has been on more medication at age 17 that I am surprised she is alive. Hypochondria is a serious illness, and I hope I can find some book somewhere that can help me with this.
A funny gift or read for your favorite hypochondriac.......2000-07-23
I bought this as a gift for a good friend who always thinks she has some illness and worries about getting every illness. The book is hilarious and I found myself staying up to read it before I gave it to her. It has assorted funny facts that will gross you out about bacteria on toilets, showers, etc. and allkinds of things you can worry about. My friend loved it and i though it was so funny I bought another copy for myself. I really recommend it, it is filled with facts, there are 2-3 on every page.
The perfect gift for that special paranoiac in your life.......1998-11-27
This book is a wonderful way to torture anyone who has ever thought twice about touching that doorknob. Lots of fun and chilling information about the germs, microbes, and other agents of death that are everywhere around us, invading us insidiously, hastening disease. Do not read this book on the toilet, for example. Written with humor and a sly sadism, this is a user-friendly manual that, if studied and heeded, could add years to your life, provided you spend them in a plastic bubble. A perfect stocking-stuffer for anyone who thinks it's safe to shake hands--and for those who know that it isn't.
