At one time, Lydia and Christopher were lovers as well as travel companions; now they are merely fellow travelers. While on a trip to Morocco, Lydia notices a small mark on her hand which begins to grow and spread in thin, tattooed lines that only she can see. Eventually, the marks reveal themselves to be a detailed map of an unknown land, and Lydia begins to understand that these marks, invisible to all but herself and a mysterious Moroccan man named Layesh, will lead her on a strange and perilous journey. The Tattooed Map is Lydia's journal of the days and weeks leading up to her disappearance. Each page contains her daily experiences--her growing shock and fear as the map unfolds itself, her deteriorating relationship with Christopher, her conversations with strangers--as well as the memorabilia she collects along the way: maps and postcards, train tickets and postage stamps, lists of books she's reading and souvenirs she's bought--all pasted in the margins of the journal.
When Lydia disappears midway through the journey, her friend Christopher takes up the journal, using it first as a means of recording his search for her and then, increasingly, as a clue to her fate. A combination travelogue, mystery, and ghost story, The Tattooed Map is a mesmerizing, physically beautiful book. Each page is gloriously decorated with the kinds of fascinating flotsam and jetsam that travelers find cluttering their pockets and notebooks at the end of a trip, making The Tattooed Map a book you'll want to return to again and again.
Book Description
"I'm beside myself, I can barely write this the design on my left hand is now extended up my wrist ..."
So deepens the enigma of The Tattooed Map, a richly illustrated and thoroughly captivating first novel by Barbara Hodgson. Somewhere in Northern Africa, an intrepid traveler awakens with a mysterious mark on her hand that soon develops into a detailed, macabre map spreading across her skin. As Lydia's private journal entries unfold complete with fold-out maps, photographs, drawings, and handwritten notes the reader becomes as drawn into the conundrum of the tattooed map as Lydia herself. When Lydia disappears and her friend Christopher takes up her journal to record his search for her, the situation becomes even more puzzling until the book's haunting resolution. In this unique novel, as engrossing to look at as it is to read, Hodgson has crafted a spine-tingling mystery that will make armchair adventurers want to embark upon their own journeys if only they could be sure of their return.
Customer Reviews:
Good read, but very little closure........2005-08-06
As far as graphic novels go, I'd say this was good. However, I would have liked more at the end or a sequel novel.
Take a journey with the Tattooed Map.......2003-04-23
If you are a fan of the Griffin & Sabine series by Nick Bantock, you will probably also be a fan of Barbara Hodgson. In her first book, THE TATTOOED MAP, she weaves a story much like Bantock does. Beautiful drawings, photographs and handwritten notes adorn the margins of Lydia Usher's journal, the book you will find yourself reading.
Lydia and her friend Christopher have travelled together for many years, some distance growing between them during the past several trips. After they arrive in Morroco, Lydia gets what she thinks are flea bites on her hand. Soon however the red markings have formed a tattoo, one that is growing up her arm. The lines form a map, but of where or when Lydia is unsure. And then she vanishes, leaving behind her journal, notes and photos. Christopher is shocked and surprised at her sudden disappearance, but not as surprised as he becomes once he starts to read her journal and look for her.
The Tattooed Map.......2002-02-21
such a pretty book! if you like the gryphon & sabine series for it's art, you'll appreciate this book, too! a must read before you visit morocco, the desciption of scenery and the scrap-book style pictures make the reader want to jump on a plane to northern africa toute suite! the ending of story left me hanging and wishing it would continue, but the excitment of the main part of the tale and the beauty of the book itself makes The Tattooed Map a worthy purchase, especially as a gift for someone who is a gryphon & sabine fan...they'll love it! I do!!
One of my all-time favorite books.......2001-08-24
I loved this book...very strange, creative, exotic and mysterious with beautiful illustrations that give you the feel of Morocco.
Beautifully illustrated but give me more........2001-08-08
Travel to exotic places, always an interesting topic, this book initially read like a travelogue. Lydia, who travels with her one time lover now friend Christopher, has taken on the enjoyable task of keeping a journal. She is a warm personality and eager to befriend the natives who reciprocate by inviting her into their homes. We follow her through the streets as she enlightens us with a refreshing and unusual look at the back alleys of Morocco for Lydia is not only here in the present, but also lost in the past or perhaps not.
After awakening with what she deems to be flea-bites on her hand she finds an intriguing connection to a Moroccan named Layesh. From these spots on her hand a tattoo begins to spread of a map, ornate and only visible to her. There is so much here to work with but I find that the author left me wanting more. Chris finds himself faced with her disappearance and left to decipher the insanity that her journal has become. He picks up pen and paper and attempts to continue the journal finding a strange comfort in putting his words on paper. As Chris begins his journey there is a transition in the works, but is it enough to save this book, that is the question that only the reader can answer. Kelsana 8/8/01

Book Description
Joshua Seigl, a celebrated but reclusive author, is forced for reasons of failing health to surrender his much-prized bachelor's independence. Advertising for an assistant, he unwittingly embarks upon the most dangerous adventure of his privileged life.
Alma Busch, a sensuous, physically attractive young woman with bizarre tattoos covering much of her body, stirs in Seigl a complex of emotions: pity? desire? responsibility? guilt? Unaware of her painful past and her troubled personality, Seigl hires her as his assistant. As the novel alternates between Seigl's and Alma's points of view, the naïve altruism of the one and the virulent anti-Semitism of the other clash in a tragedy of thwarted erotic desire.
With her masterful balance of dark suspense and surprising tenderness, Joyce Carol Oates probes the contemporary tragedy of ethnic hatred and challenges our accepted limits of desire. The Tattooed Girl may be her most controversial novel.
Customer Reviews:
really good.......2007-08-15
The themes in this novel are certainly controversial and most of the characters are unappealing, but I very much enjoyed it because it was well-written and interesting and it made me think. Actually, "enjoyed" isn't really the right word for a book with such a drab, cold tone - I was really engrossed in it and fascinated by it, I couldn't put it down.
This book it being marketed as if its main point was dealing with anti-Semitism and I think that was a mistake - this novel's main point seemed to me to be that the world can be a cold, cruel, detached place and that people can be very ignorant and harshly judgmental of one another. It also seemed to me that the main reason why Alma hated Seigl wasn't that he was Jewish - it was more because he's wealthy and takes everything for granted in order to avoid his guilt feelings about his mostly inherited, unearned wealth, and because he's male and Alma both adores and hates men. His Jewishness was mostly just something Alma could latch onto because that's what she does, she latches onto things and clings for dear life, and hating Seigl for his heritage was a way for her to bond with Dmitri and cling to him. I have no way of knowing whether or not Oates intended it this way or not, but anti-Semitism in this novel seemed almost incidental instead of being the primary theme. If it was supposed to be a novel primarily about anti-Semitism then Oates didn't quite accomplish her goal.
Also, if the book was intended to be about the redemption of Alma then the ending is a failure and makes the book pointless, but it fits in well with the novel being about the general random cruelty of life. I will agree with other reviewers though that the ending was a bit of a cop-out, like Oates just wanted to end the novel and couldn't think of another way to do it.
As I said before, I found this book to be fascinating and an engrossing read, and the characters, as odd as they were, seemed believable. It's probably not the novel for you if you want likable characters and a happy ending, but I don't regret reading it. Perhaps I'm more inclined to give Oates or authors in general a break, I don't know. This is all just my opinion, take it how you will.
Stunning!.......2006-12-07
A powerful, insightful, and intense novel with a plot unlike any other I've ever read (and I read a lot). The characters were so believable; every one of them came very much to life. I liked this book, and I think Joyce Carol Oates showed true genius in writing this.
Some wonderful bits, but uneven.......2006-11-17
There were some very fine passages in this book, although harrowing -- a hospital sequence, a visit from the main character's sister. The characterizations are disturbing, but generally good. The main character, Joshua Siegl, is in his late thirties, and that is a very big mistake, since he seems to be, physically, at least ten years older, and judging from his speech, even older than that. I found myself imagining him as fiftyish. He's more believable that way. The female main character, an uneducated, ill-used youngish woman, is a hodgepodge of qualities, some well drawn, some not, although not unbelievable. The character of Siegl's sister is well done, but only up to a point. The author falls into her characteristic short-phrases-no-complete-sentences-dreamy style in places, but here it feels like a cheat, like she uses that style to fake transitions that would be hard to do in complete, grammatical sentences. Well, she writes fast, and here her technique is showing. The ending is a disappointment, but doesn't ruin the reading. Just seems as if the author got tired of writing this book, and decided to wrap it all up quickly. Read this if you like her work, otherwise, her short stories are much better, I think, than her novels (although this one is better than Middle Age).
Disappointed.......2006-07-17
I wasn't sure about this book when I started it, but I stuck with it. Others have described the plot of this book, so I'll skip that. I found it interesting that the story would jump from character to character and you got to understand the mental processes of all of the characters. I was rooting for the transformation of Alma. After her horrific childhood and adult years, it was gratifying to see her slowly realize that there is another way to live. I was just terribly disappointed with the ending. What was the point? It ends abruptly with nothing positive coming out of this story. I felt cheated.
Would not recommend this book to anyone. .......2006-07-03
I was really surprised at how bad this book was. It was terribly written and cheesy. Both of the main characters are completely unbelievable - the author describes Joshua Seigl as though he were an 80 year old man - he is supposed to be in his late 30's. He wears tweed caps, and calls people "darling"?? Even for a "literary" type, completely off the mark. His whole persona was like something out of the depression. As for the Tattooed Girl, this character was also annoyingly unbelievable. No one under the age of 70 uses the word "Jewess" - EVER. This book reminded me of a book that an adult wrote for children, completely failing to grasp a certain time and place.
CHEESY and overwritten. But, naturally, I had to finish it, and I was glad when I did.

great book........2001-03-04
If you're starting a collection of books on tattooing, you have to get this book. It gives a brief introduction on tattooing, as told by Spider Webb, one of the most controversial tattoo artists of all time. It also contains some great vintage photos of heavily tattooed men and woman. If you like vintage tattoo art this is a great book .

Book Description
Dedication
"Writing a book is rarely the work of just one person. In this case, it was. But I couldn't have done this all by myself if it weren't for the invaluable support of my wife, Peggy Hill. She was always there for me as I worked late into the night, with an encouraging word ... a cup of coffee ... a re-write or two ... or simply typing the entire manuscript from the notes I scribbled on the back of a napkin or called in to our answering machine. And she did all the illustrations."
-Hank Hill
Customer Reviews:
JMJ Folks, It's ONLY A Paperback Based On A Half-Hour TV Show, How Good Does It Have To Be???.......2005-09-26
Ignore the slam reviews here, this is pretty darn funny stuff from the early years of the best animated show on TV today. You pay less than ten bucks, you read this in an hour, you crack a smile or two, you feel a little happier. What more is to be expected of a book based on a TV show, for crying out loud? Some people need to re-align their parameters in accordance with reality. I think this is good...
Eh........2004-05-08
It was a quick read, and it didn't seem to be based on much of the show. The illustrations didn't seem to be the calibur of the actual show. It was funny however, and interesting. I would pick it up on a discount, or at the library, but I wouldn't buy it. Save your money for season 3 on DVD whenever that may come out.
hank hill was not born in texas.......2004-01-11
Hank wasn't born in Texas but in New York. Did you actually ever watch the show?
a bad bad book.......2002-07-30
This book was clearly assembled by people who never watched tv show and were working from only the most cursory descriptions of the characters and mood of the show. The show is all about subtlety and understatement and there is none of either in this book. Blech. Blech I say.
WD40 for the Soul, on the other hand, is definitely true to the spirit of the show and I do recommend that one.
(the 2nd star is for the centerfold of John Redcorn)
Overall Boring.......1999-10-21
As a huge King Of The Hill fan, I eagerly purchased this book. I though it was fairly boring, and only a few pages had me laughing, and just a few more made me smile.

Another collection of Trillin's short pieces has hit the streets, and he just gets better and better. A Midwesterner in his soul but a New Yorker in fact, Trillin's comic take on '90s life demonstrates his perfect pitch for the absurd again and again in these short and intelligent essays.
Customer Reviews:
Witty but never mean.......2004-02-11
Humorist Trillin's 1995 collection of the best of his "New Yorker" columns, maintains a consistent deadpan humor and amiable cynicism, whether the subject is bestselling writers who don't write their own books, teenagers' comprehension of rock lyrics, or the rehabilitation of Nixon.
Trillin is at his most caustic with politicians and icons of corporate culture. His wife and two daughters feature prominently, as always, allowing him to play the hapless, push-over curmudgeon. Wry and economical with words, Trillin takes on any aspect of American culture that strikes his fancy and gets to the nub of absurdity without ever resorting to sneers or viciousness. A delight, as Trillin's collections always are.
Flashes of brilliance.......2002-11-07
Calvin Trillin has two qualities that distinguish him as a writer. One is a great talent for deadpan wit, and the other is a true amateur's enthusiasm for everything he tries.
The latter serves him best when he's writing about food, or about travel, or about everyday life in New York, but less so when he writes about politics and world events. His perspective on his own countrymen is often narrow, provincial, and downright condescending. He can't bring himself to admit that someone could hold different views from his and still be a moral person.
But no matter. There's still a nice variety of wit and droll observation contained in this volume to make up for the pieces that fall flat.
