5 out of 5 stars interesting read.......2005-09-25

This book reaches a broad audience; from those who don't know anything about visual perception to those who are experts in the field.

4 out of 5 stars not a lunar eclipse.......2003-03-09

the review by Liddell is barking at the wrong satellite: the book on the shadow that he does recommend IS by an art historian as well--one who has profited from Baxandall's learned engagement with Renaissance art theory. Baxandall is one of the most important (and self-deprecatingly modest) figures in Renaissance art history, but Shadows and Enlightment is more of an hors d'oeuvre than a full-course banquet (or, to change metaphors, more of a 5-finger exercise than a sonata). Baxandall has long been concerned with the relationship between perception and representation. As a historian, he is sensitive to the dramatic changes that our ideas about perception and representation have undergone in the past 6 centuries, and he brings a great skill with ancient and modern languages to the interpretation of texts written by artists and amateurs (which might include philosophers) in the several periods covered by his expertise in art history. He is not attempting to write "bad physics" but to shed light on approaches to pictorial representation in an era (the 18th century) when the modern physics of light was about to be developed, and the modern depiction of luminous effects (i.e., Impressionism) was being prepared. Science and philosophy were far closer in the 18th century than they are today, so Baxandall's brief book concerns itself with ideas about perception as much as it deals with the science of optics, as they related to the practice of painting. This is art history. Liddell does not know what s/he's talking about.

1 out of 5 stars Total Eclipse of the Moon.......2002-12-01

Those readers who enjoyed Baxandall's excellent "Painting and Experience in 15th Century Italy" wil be disappointed by this book. Whereas "Painting and Experience" successfully evoked the society of the time and illuminated its connection with the art produced, "Shadows and Enlightment" is a cold, drab, would-be technical book with lots of little diagrams, apparently showing that light moves in a straight line - golly!

Art historians often suffer from an inferiority complex about their subject because it seems so subjective and unscientific. It's almost as if they are aware that they are looking at the past in the reflected light of the Moon rather than in the clear, relatively objective sunshine of verifiable scientific truth. Baxandall clearly seems to have been beset by feelings like this and has reacted by writing what is in effect a very bad physics book.

But instead of the sunshine of truly scientific insights, all we get is a lunar eclipse. Art historians should stick to art history and that means using a little more imagination to delineate the shapes and truths in the twilight world in which they exist. Switching on a high-powered searchlight just dazzles and blinds.

For those interested in shadows as an aspect of art, I recommend Victor I. Stoichita's "A Short History of the Shadow" which ties in the phenomena of shadow in art to a rich spectrum of historical, social, religious, and cultural issues.

Book Description

In the movie and stage play, Amadeus, Austrian Emperor Joseph II tells Mozart that ther are "too many" notes in one of Mozart's masterpieces. Mozart replies that there is just the right number of notes, not too many or too few.

Such is the case with A Tao of God. There is just the right number of words to accomplish its intention, namely, to provide a road map of spiritual evolution beginning with an explanation of the human experiment to living a fulfilled and harmonious life with intermediate stops at emotional wounding, healing, and manifesting. The book's strength lies in the brevity and simplicity of its profound wisdom, which teaches that true healing comes from within, not without, and plots the course of the inward journey.

In today's fast-paced world, where more and more people are awakening to their need for spiritual evolution, there are many questions- and many questioners- calling for quick, simple easy-to-find answers. Answers to questions about enlightenment and spiritual evolution have been provided for centuries in thousands of texts. There is indeed, nothing new under the sun.

So- what makes A Tao of God unique

A Tao of God is complete work that spans:
* The purpose of mankind,
* How we come to be spiritually wounded,
* How these wounds form the basis of all our perceived problems,
* How they create our perceptions of failures and insecurities,
* How to heal these wounds,
* Manifesting everything we need, and
* Living out lives in a state of perfect harmony and happiness.

A Tao of God is short. All of the above is accomplished in about 100 pages. The book's core structure is 39 one to three page chapters.

A Tao of God uses simple, straightforward language and strives for perfect clarity. It crosses the boundaries of religious, philosophical, and psychological thought.

Because of its succinctness and breadth, A Tao of God is ideal for any seeker of spiritual enlightenment, from complete novices to those who have been consciously on their paths for years, even decades. It ties together the entire journey, and can be read at one sitting. And, just like the popular classics, A Tao of God is one of the few books that can be re-read over and over again, since its message changes the more deeply the reader penetrates the veil between the Earth and the domain of spirit.

At this time in mankind's history when fear is running rampant and ruling so much of our actions, a simple and short explanation of what is happening in the nations of the world is sorely needed. Because nations are composed of people, the dynamics of why humans behave as they do are fully explained in A Tao of God. The book has a message of tremendous importance to all people, regardless of nationality, religion or creed.

The message is: understand the true origins of fear, learn to release your own fears, and support others in doing the same. In this way you can heal the pain and fear that stop you, and manifest a life of true abundance- one that is filled with inner peace, happiness, love and total freedom. This is the contract A Tao of God makes with its readers. This is the promise that A Tao of God delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Helps Humanity Overcome Insecurity, Fear, Judgment & Attack.......2005-09-05

Ron McCray did a wonderful job in presenting the spiritual wounds that humanity suffers, which lead people to attack both themselves and others. Inner peace is something that all people desire and this book is a tribute to helping anyone that wants to awaken from within, so they feel free of judgment and pain. It's a short book, but the essential messages are conveyed in a way where they will bring you more inner understanding to create personal happiness in your life.

    Book Description

These essays by eminent European intellectual and cultural historian Anson Rabinbach address the writings of key figures in twentieth-century German philosophy. Rabinbach explores their ideas in relation to the two world wars and the horrors facing Europe at that time.
Analyzing the work of Benjamin and Bloch, he suggests their indebtedness to the traditions of Jewish messianism. In a discussion of Hugo Ball's little-known Critique of the German Intelligentsia, Rabinbach reveals the curious intellectual career of the Dadaist and antiwar activist turned-nationalist and anti-Semite. His examination of Heidegger's "Letter on Humanism" and Jaspers's The Question of German Guilt illuminates the complex and often obscure political referents of these texts. Turning to Horkheimer and Adorno's Dialectic of Enlightenment, Rabinbach offers an arresting new interpretation of this central text of the critical theory of the Frankfurt School. Subtly and persuasively argued, his book will become an indispensable reference point for all concerned with twentieth-century German history and thought.

      Book Description

David Michael Levin's ongoing exploration of the moral character and enlightenment-potential of vision takes a new direction in The Philosopher's Gaze. Levin examines texts by Descartes, Husserl, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Benjamin, Merleau-Ponty, and Lévinas, using our culturally dominant mode of perception and the philosophical discourse it has generated as the site for his critical reflections on the moral culture in which we are living.
In Levin's view, all these philosophers attempted to understand, one way or another, the distinctive pathologies of the modern age. But every one also attempted to envision--if only through the faintest of traces, traces of mutual recognition, traces of another way of looking and seeing--the prospects for a radically different lifeworld. The world, after all, inevitably reflects back to us the character, the reach and range, of our vision.
In these provocative essays, the author draws on the language of hermeneutical phenomenology and at the same time refines phenomenology itself as a method of working with our experience and thinking critically about the culture in which we live.

Helen Potter lived a happy life until she got lost in a nightmare of sexual abuse. Now she's traveling through urban and rural England on a journey that is remarkably similar to the one Beatrix Potter once took. Bryan Talbot's inspirational story of young Helen Potter and her journey of healing won numerous awards and unending acclaim for the British writer/artist . . . even letters of commendation from Judy Taylor, the chair of the Beatrix Potter Society. This book is yet another example of a touching story that transcends the misperceptions that comics are disposable, juvenile pap.

                        5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-05-19

I bought this book to write a research paper for my PhD course. My personal impression is that young readers prefer to see more visual material even when 'reading'. This is a great source to inform and educate them on the events that happen in the story. Also the preword and the epilogue are very useful.

                        5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt & moving.......2007-05-19

This fine graphic novel is a stellar example of what comics can do better than any other artform. Prose by itself wouldn't convey the combined power of text & illustration Talbot uses to such stunning effect. Beginning with the Beatrix Potter-style cover art, he offers layers of emotional & artistic meaning, utilizing flashbacks, fantasy, and harsh realism to tell the story of a damaged but ultimately victorious young woman -- and he's able to tell it from both the inside & from a more omniscient viewpoint. His detailed & expressive faces provide nuances that would do many accomplished actors proud.

What makes this work is that it's not just A Very Special Episode sort of story. Helen is an individual, not a case study, for all the extensive background material. Her story is not simply about healing & recovery, but about the importance of art, as well as the struggle towards wholeness that every human being must undergo. And the lush, colorful art only adds to the richness of this work, which rewards many rereadings. Highly recommended!

                        5 out of 5 stars A Real Stunner.......2005-08-04

Like Spiegelman's Maus and Satrapi's Persepolis books, this graphic novel shows how powerful this genre can be in dealing with brutality, in this case with childhood sexual abuse as well as with animal experimentation, social isolation, homelessness, and a horrifying family life. As society and family prey on Helen, the protagonist, she thinks, she reads, she develops her own thoughts and insists on going her own way--and on getting others, including readers, to think differently about their own preconceptions and assumptions as she sheds her abusers.

Take the example of rats--far from being reviled at best and something to be experimented on at worst, Helen shows other characters and us, the readers, that they're intelligent, amazing creatures that should be respected and even worshipped, as in Hindu religion. What's especially great about this novel is the way that it mixes an unflinching look at horror and brutality (Helen being abused by her father and rejected by her mother; fantasies of suicide; scenes of sexual predation as she hitchhikes; and much more) with a clear appreciation for the power of art and thinking (as well as the positive example of another assertive individual, Beatrix Potter) to help someone come into her own and leave her abusers behind.

I've seen several people criticizing the cover art of this book, and I think this needs clarifiction.

If you read Beatrix Potter books as a child, as I did, you would have recognized immediately that the cover is a direct homage to the classic white covers of the little books. The plain white background, centered watercolor illustration, and even the title font is a faithful echo of every tale she ever published. Go check out one and see if you don't revise your opinion. I was, in fact, drawn to the book immediately BECAUSE I recognized it as a Beatrix Potter concept.

Oh, and the story is a very good one, and timely. :)

                        5 out of 5 stars Great GN with a so-so cover.......2004-09-23

I really love this book. The artwork is beautiful and the writing is very moving. I must admit I was originally turned off when I saw this because of the cover. I don't think the cover art does justice to the rest of the book.

This is the only graphic novel I've come across that deals with the issue of child abuse/molestation. It's a difficult subject to tackle, but Mr. Talbot deals with it masterfully, creating a visually stunning gn that never loses sight of the seriousness of the issue.

No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem

The problem with this book is that you have to read it in a room by yourself, otherwise you'll have someone asking you what you're laughing at every couple of minutes. It is truly a funny book. If you don't believe me read it for your self and let me know if you didn't laugh, or at least giggle.

5 out of 5 stars The Humorous History Of The Most Famous Redneck.......2005-02-18

This book is a humrous, witty, and thoroughly enjoyable autobiography of Jeff Foxworthy. This book covers all aspects of his life, from going fishing with his grandfather, hunting with his father, and hanging out with his best friends. This book contains many jokes and humorous stories within that will appeal to any true redneck. Coming from a small town myself, I found that this book had a lot in it which I could relate to. One of the last chapters contains Jeff's explanations of how he came up with some of his You Might Be A Redneck If.. jokes. All in all, this is a book that will keep you laughing for a long time. Jeff is one of the best comedians out there today. His humor never fails to make me laugh like crazy.
