Robert Kushner: Gardens of Earthly Delight.......2007-05-23
Very disappointed with the book. I was hoping the book would have more flower-paintings since the book calls Gardens of Earthly Delight.
Although over half of the reproductions (about 50 of 80) are of abstract people and other abstracts instead of flowers.
Colorplates are small - pages are with huge margins.
If you like flowers of Robert Kushner rather then his other abstracts I do not recommend the book. You will be disappointed.
the pleasure of discovering Kushner.......2007-01-18
In this book I could apreciate the work of this great artist and discover our similar points of interest. Beautiful plates and good reading.

Delicious recipes and photography.......2006-12-05
When I decided to purchase an Indian cookbook, I looked extensively through the recipes in many different ones before buying this one. Yes, the pictures alone make this a coffee table book worth having, but the recipes were also very well laid out and looked acheivable.
For a point of reference, I am a fairly experienced home cook, but not a pro by any stretch (except possibly a pro at cookbook collecting). This past Saturday night, I had a few friends over and made the following recipes (making them for the first time, I might add) - Butter Chicken, Lamb Korma, Matar Paneer, Raita, Carrot Halva (plus some spiced basmati rice). It was unbelievably scrumptious - with the added bonus of very straightforward, foolproof recipes. I hope to make my way through some more of them very soon. :)
Ditto to several other reviewers' comments that you will need some special spices/ingredients if you don't already have a kitchen stocked for Indian cooking, but nothing that I was unable to find (in the Salt Lake City area). I highly recommend this cookbook.
Beautiful Book of Great Foods.......2006-08-04
The Food of ______ series of books are exceptional. Each picks a country (China, Italy, France and now India) and gives an exhaustive report on the foods of that countrie. In a country as large and diverse as India, the food choices are equally diverse. The editors discuss the foods of various regions as part of the introduction before going on to the recipies.
While vegetarianism has been and remains a major part of Indian cooking, the country is big enough with enough diversity that virtually every thing is included in at least a few recipies in this book.
Rice is a staple across most of India with many different varieties. If I have a complaint about this book, it is that the authors do all of their rice recipies with Basmati rice. I'd like to see a greater discussion on other types of rice. On the other hand, basmati is probably the easiest Indian rice to get in this country, and I can't imagine that it would make a big difference in the taste to make it with some other kind of rice.
Like the other books in this series, it is profusely illustrated with photographs taken all over the country of both the prepared dishes, sometimes of the preparation, and a few of the spectacular scenery.
As with any kind of specialized cooking, you will find some special spices in use. Thanks to the internet, you should have no trouble getting them by mail if you don't happen to live near a city.
Best Indian cook book I have used.......2004-11-25
I use this cook book weekly, I love Indian food and this book really does an excellent job of going through step by step. Even my Indian friends say the food tastes like it does in India. I recommend this book highly. Oh, the almond corriander chicken is fantastic too!!!
Wonderful!.......2004-01-21
This gorgeous oversized hardcover (yes amazon has the wrong picture . . .) first gave me the impression that the authors' priority would be pretty pictures and recipes would come second. I was very pleased to find that I was wrong. The book has lovely and accurate recipes for everything an Indian Kitchen should have including how to make panner (indian home made cheese) chenna (cheese used to make desserts) yoghurt, obscure indian vegetables and the main staple recipes of most indian cookbooks. I do have two complaints - the recipes are given without possible western substitutions for indian ingredients . . E.G wrapping things in bananna leaves and cooking them. Sounds great but my indian store doesn't tend to carry bananna leaves. Would foil work?? I don't know. It usually helps if a recipe is tweaked to accomodate a western supermarket. Julie Sahni's book Savoring India does that wonderfully.
Also, ocassionally there are fold out pages with little blurbs and pictures of things like street foods or snacks without a recipe for them. Nice to see but no way to cook them is provided.
I would also like to make a comment about the growing size of the cookbooks nowadays. I hated the teensy weensy pocket paperbacks but these huge SUV's of the kitchen take up the entire counter space above a cabinet and are way to long and heavy for a standard cook book holder. about six inches shorter would have worked fine although some of the pretty decor would have had to go.
All in all, a nice book for indian cooking
excellent.......2003-06-05
though the cover picture is wrong but the recepies aren't- i am a professional chef with quite a good expertise in indian cuisine and in pursue to sharpen my skills in south indian- i find the recipes easy and also authentic in every aspect- the author may be a srilankan national( a wild guess by her name) but the work and the dedication has made her a authentic indian to her work. It is very appreciable hats off to the author priya. I have tried a few reciepes which are perfect and the pictures in the book are extrodinary to the western eyes bringing the streets of indian market to them..
I with no doubt give 5 star rating to this book

Ronald Searle will make you laugh out loud.......2007-09-30
This book is full of the funniest illustrations that will make anyone laugh and real wine appreciators fall out of their chairs!
Saw it in a B & B in McMinnville, Oregon & had to have it!.......1999-08-18
A great book that is a must for "winelovers" with illustrations that only a crazy Englishman could think about in the wicked world of winetasting!
funniest best book about wine phrases ever.......1999-02-26
a must read for anyone who enjoys wine and espically those who like to talk about it. Great gift for the wine snob you know.
Only Searle could create such irreverent fun.......1998-11-02
Is this the book that Searle illustrated some 10-15 years ago? I enjoyed sharing it with many winetasting friends. It contained such depictions as "this wine is passed its prime" or "This wine is very immature" I loaned to someone and never got it back. If this is the book, I want it!!!
only Searle could create such irreverant fun.......1998-10-30
Is this the book that Clos Du Bois winery commissioned some 10-15 yrs ago? It had such cartoon depictions as "This wine is immature" and " This wine is passed its prime" I enjoyed it so much, while having wine tasting parties, then someone "borrowed" it.

Customer Reviews:
AMAZING & AMUSING...GREAT RESOURCE!!!.......2004-02-13
my background is not dissimilar to that of dr. hamilton's, and, as such, i am often asked to recommend reading material (by students and clients alike) related to the subject of human sexuality. rarely have i come across something so well-compiled as Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves. my goodness, the research is nothing short of phenomenal -- allowing the author to fill her pages with rich, full and, i might add, entertaining content.
a number of my students have not only found this book enlightening, but impetus for further study (as least in regard to the broader subject of human sexuality and it's role in psychology/society) especially important is the fact that this particular volume covers both genders--something no other offering in this field can boast.
i readily give "Skin Flutes & Velvet Glove" a 5+ star rating because it supplies a substantial and impressive amount of information in a well-written and amusing fashion. i hope dr. hamilton will continue to impart her unique, intelligent 'voice' upon those of us who find her works so delightful. how nice to read something that is just...so nicely written, so full of wonderful information, and so capable of giving us more than a few laughs along the way!! BRAVO!
Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves.......2003-12-17
In spite of its price (new hardcover), this book was well worth it. I'm currently reading it for the second time. I own many books on genitalia, and this is by far the best. I liked the mix of facts and fun. It's an historical treasure for anyone wanting to research the topic. The "Dicktionary" and the bibliography are particularly useful. Dr. Hamilton is to be commended for this very useful (and entertaining) book!
Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask!.......2003-07-12
This book is hilarious! Dr. Hamilton is as humorous as she is serious and factual in presenting the sometimes awkward subject of sex and genitals. This is not material covered in Med. School for sure. I learned more from this book than I've ever learned from any medical text, "street knowledge" or "sex ed." Dr. Hamilton has written a fun, humorous, fact-filled book about almost anything and everything one has ever wondered about the organs between our legs. Because of her use of the coloquial and straight-forward, no nonsense talk approach of the subject matter...I wouldn't recommend this as a "sex ed." book for teens as much as I would recommend that every parent own a copy of this book to be better educated on the subject matter. This book is written with wit, humor and facts in a very comfortable format...While the title may be vulgar to some...the book is anything but. I enjoyed this read with a smile and occassional belly laugh, mainly because Dr. Hamilton presented answers or facts to questions I thought were too warped to ever contemplate finding an answer to. I highly recommend this book for anyone remotely curious about their private parts (or other's for that matter!).
Fun, Fresh, Fascinating!.......2003-01-22
I first learned about Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves from my girlfriend...literally! We were at a dinner party and someone mentioned some obscure acronym for male genitalia and the next thing I knew, my sweetie launched into a litany of one liners about "spare legs, squirmin' Hermans, big Macs, baloney ponys, trouser trouts, skin flutes..." and so on. We were hysterical if not a bit 'shocked' (especially after she treated us to an equally impressive list of nicknames for female genitals).
The list of names along with the interesting history of genital nicknaming certainly makes for great conversation fodder -- but Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves takes the reader far beyond this superficial falderal by delving into such topics as the connection between modern-day religion and ancient genital worship; the history of circumcision (more disturbing than one might imagine); odd (really odd!) things folks do to their own 'flutes' and 'gloves'; just to name a few. Dr. Hamilton also provides clear and fascinating info about genitals in general (nice chapters on male/female anatomy - the section on "the black rose" was mind boggling!)
Engaging yet easy read, memorable/unusual factoids, highly entertaining... highly recommended!!!
Left me limp!.......2003-01-15
After reading reviews from readers on this site I was excited about enlighting my knowledge on the male and female "goods", but found myself bored within the first couple of chapters. The so called doc - constantly kills the interest with one liners that leave you yearning for nothing. She desperately tries to appear witty and experienced only to come off as a preformance anxiety filled writer(2-3 stars at best). The physical layout of the book is a desk top publishing nightmare - with the margins so far in on all sides to give minimal words per page, yet streching the length of the book (perhaps an attempt of overconpensation, hehe). This book had huge potential and its a shame a better writer didn't grasp the idea between his/her hands before Hamilton. I'm guessing if you are easily entertained and you've got 20+ bucks to spare, then this would be a good book. Other wise, spend the money on your significant other and learn about the curiosities first hand!
