This book is so often mentioned and recommended that I bought it. I have produced some hand-built portfolios of my own, and was looking for more inspiration and practical advice. Instead, I found poor images, much of it in black and white, and the work in the portfolios is more interesting than the portfolios themselves.
This is heavily geared to architects and also to those with the means to have professional printing and a huge cash outlay for materials, cases, etc. I think some of the advice is good, but really for the un-initiated student, not professionals. A professional already knows that if the portfolio is sloppy, that it will not speak well of the designer and that a well-designed portfolio is an extra endorsement for the designer above and beyod the contents. There is little better advice/information in this book than that.
The portfolios showcased are very similar to each other, and there is little that can be produced by someone at home with a computer and a printer. I can tell you from my own experience that there is a lot you can do with a little elbow grease and less reliance on professionally assembled pieces.
A little advice of my own: A portfolio must showcase the work, must not detract from the quality of the work, and must be either changeable or expendable. Your portfolio should not be stagnant, but evolving with the new wonderful things you're doing and adding! Too few of the examples in this book provide for leave-behnids, inclusion of resumes, and the evolution of the contents.

Given this book was about presentation and promotion I was suprised to find the reproduction very poor, as if it was a photocopy in some parts. The paper selection was poor and some of the photographs of works approaching unreadable. The advice and text was good. Very, very diasappointed and in fact gave the book away.
PORTFOLIO DESIGN -indeed.......2006-09-20
Once again, I am writing a review for this book and specifically the third edition. I have noticed that a few people seem to be confused about what this book provides, so I'll give you my take on the publication.
This book is about designing a professional portfolio to showcase your work. This is not a "How To" for Photoshop, InDesign or for ways to resize renderings, although I would like to think that you would be able to easily utilize the technology at an educational facility, if you indeed have access.(If you can use AutoCad you can figure out PS and if you can use PS surely you can accurately resize an image...right?) This book focuses on layout, spacing, planning sequences, visual weight and just about any other visual design element that one might embrace when producing a portfolio. The outcome of using this book as a resource ends in your portfolio being stylized in a personal yet extremely effective design. The most beneficial aspect of this book is learning how to compose the whole thing as a piece of literature. Your portfolio should tell a story. A story with an introduction, an exposition, plot, peaks, plateaus and an appropriate finish. THIS IS ABOUT PLANNING, CHOOSING CONTENT AND DESIGNING A FINISHED PRODUCT THAT YOU CAN HAND TO PROSPECT AND KNOW THAT YOU HAVE CAPTURED THEIR ATTENTION. Of course, this book will not make poor work/pieces look fabulous. Sorry, no magic tricks are included.

This book will get you accepted in the best schools!!
I have read more than one book on portfolio design for architects, listened to many words of advice on the subject but Howard Linton's book was really the best resource I've ever had.
Other books are just vague and annoyingly general, they don't tell you how to organize yourself and your work and they don't discuss the many details you have to bear in mind and go through, or worse still have no lists of the dos and don'ts! On the other hand, Portfolio design by Mr. Linton does all that and much more.
I recommend it to all architecture students and professionals.

Smaller Format that previous edition not appreciated.......2007-01-11
I suppose the smaller format kept the cost down, but I was disappointed to find that out AFTER I bought them. (That's right, "them". I ordered a dozen for a drawing class I held at my company.)
It still has great content though, and I further suppose that if you never ran into the larger format edition, you may not miss it. Excellent content. Not just another drawing book.
I recommend the better 2nd edition instead..........2006-10-08
This new 3rd edition is barely decent, not great. In some ways, it's easily worse than the good 2nd edition(!)...
First off: the most obvious change here is in its *size*: this 3rd edition is about 2/3 as big as the 2nd edition- tiny! I'm talking about the overall physical dimensions: mainly length & width, with depth not being radically changed.
Most of the lettering is the same size as before, although a few pages include microscopic printing. These new physical dimensions are *not* an improvement. This whole book has an uncomfortably crammed look & feel, not unlike a packed elevator ride. "Get me outta this thing!" is my honest reaction here.
Maybe it's because I'm so used to the 2nd edition: I consider it to be the *BEST* version, even though I only rated it as being somewhat above average. The 2nd edition is basically good, and I'm glad I have it, but I still don't think *any* version of Rapid Viz has lived up to its real, full potential. My basic complaint with these books is that the illustrations themselves often look a little too unfinished and sketchy, lacking the true detail & depth that a 5-star book might have. At other times, some drawings actually have *too much* microscopic detail. And in an effort to make an already conceptually clear & concise book even more clear & concise, this new 3rd edition eliminates some drawings & photos along the way(!). Even worse: the photos that *have* been included are reproduced poorly, as if they were printed with a cheap, pre-Internet, black & white inkjet printer. I thought new editions of books were supposed to get better, not worse! I give this thing 1 star because it's a completely unnecessary downgrade- at best.
In short: Yes, this 3rd edition has a fancy, new, computer designed cover, but I easily recommend the better 2nd edition *by far*.

Visualize your ideas!.......2006-08-01
Don't worry if you can't draw. The right brain really gets a exercise in this precise exploration of visualization of concrete concepts or large illustrations. Great for jotting down those quick notes. Simple notes through small visual captions which communicate your thoughts to your clients. Master the napkin drawing in minutes. Bring your ideas to life through simple drawing principles explained in Kurt's book.

This is a new edition of Rapid Viz. It is basically the same in terms of contents as the earlier edition.
I have always enjoyed reading - and playing around with the ideas from - Kurt Hank's books. I have all his books, which include Draw!, Design Yourself, The Change Navigator, Wake Up Your Creative Genius, Up Your Productivity.
Like his other books, this book is very well illustrated, conceptually & graphically. It's primary focus is the introduction of a Rapid Visualisation Process, which one can learn easily & then use readily to capture & convert fleeting thoughts into visual forms on paper. It is packed with ideas, games, puzzles & exercises to guide the reader.
It is written for the novice in mind. It provides a step by step approach to the practical strategies of seeing, thinking, & drawing.
For the benefit of readers, I append herewith the Table of Contents:
- All we need is another drawing book;
- Another way of learning: an insight into intuitive, holistic thinking;
- The bilingual method: using the often neglected visual abilities we all possess;
- What you need to get started: a description of tools & techniques to aid visual learning;
- The box method: a very simple drawing technique for rapid viz;
- Rapid indication: visual symbols & cliches for rapid viz;
- The visualisation process: drawing made easier by evolving a visual concept to a finished drawing;
- Graphic expression: communication with visual images;
- Graphic creation: using visual thinking to stimulate & refine creative thinking;
- Learning with visuals: using visual patterns to improve learning, memory & recall;
I must say: The entire book is really great stuff to get you moving with visual thinking!
One word of advice: Readers who are more logically oriented by nature, should firstly take a look at 'Thinking with a Pencil' by Henning Nelms. This book has a more structured approach to visual thinking.

This book is completely outmoded and does NOT reflect the current figural sketch-like freehand drawing in fashion design.
The book was produced in 1996 and seems even outdated for that year... big shoulders, models are much too literal, etc.

bad drawing book.......2001-05-29
This book is poorly put together. It looked as if it had been copied and it was even double copied on some pages. It also had no cover or colored pages. Figures are small proportions, not up to date with fashion figures. It was a bunch of copied pages

Yes, this book is very helpful with developing design skills. The only thing I was unhappy with when I recieved it in the mail was that on the preview of it on this website Amazon.com it looks as though it would be in color...only when it came it looked like it was xeroxed (and a bad job at that) it was obviously printed in color to begin with but has since been printed in black, gray & white. For instance, it goes to describe a color scale but the "color" scale is gray & black. It also has a section about highlights & skin color yet alas, it is gray & black...Very helpful but at the same time very disappointing...

"Belgian Fashion Design" tracks all of today's major Belgian fashion designers, from Ann Demeulemeester to Veronique Branquinho, and some lesser known designers; from conception of an idea to the runway, or swimming pool (depending on where the designer decides to show his or her collection).
This book has hundreds of great color and b&w photos spanning the last two decades, as well as interviews with the designers giving insite to their ideas, inspirations and reasons for designing.
"Belgian Fashion Design" is a must have for any design professional, design student or anyone who thinks clothing is more than protection of the body from the elements.

A Christopher Golden plot makes any graphic novel a winner. Earthly Possessions presents an excellent group of demons, which are drawn with great imagination. Angel, Cordelia and Doyle come to the aid of a woman whose husband is possessed. This brings Angel in contact with Father Noe a traveling exorcist. Soon the two are working together. But Angel wonders if the former priest is too familiar with these demons. Is the good father a hero or a demonic con man? The action is colorfully drawn. I recommend this book to graphic novel and Angel fans

Great Book! Don't miss this one!.......2006-04-13
This was such a funny book, and such a joy to read! Doug Powers has put his ideas on politics, space, gas prices, sports, and oh so many other current topics, while writing to his kids and giving them the answers.
He cleverly puts his chapters into questions like "What does God look like?" and "Why do we need money?"
And after reading his thoughts on colonoscopy, I don't think I'll ever look at the subject quite the same.
If you like politics; and if you like humor, you will want to buy this book. Let's hope he comes out with anther one real soon.

A funny read.......2006-03-29
This book covers an awful lot of entertaining ground in a very managable and readable space. The book is not quite 200 pages, which is not too short, and not too long, and there's at least one good laugh on every single page, usually more. My favorites had to be the bits of political history made quite comical by Powers, followed closely by his take on the future of space exploration. I wouldn't think you'd have to have kids to think it's funny, but much of this does bring back some memories to when my kids were growing up and I was trying to explain the world to them.

I laughed, I cried ... and that was just in viewing the author's picture and comments about the book! Talk about entertaining! I enjoyed Doug's views on the oldest profession out there, PARENTING. I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book. This is definitely a MUST HAVE and a great gift for anyone who appreciates a good chuckle. I can't wait for his follow-up book!
