A Splendid American Church.......2007-04-24
About the only objection I could have for this book was there wasn't enough of it.
But in reality, this is a very good and useful overview of an ancient and still-vibrant American Church movement. Origins are explained well, if not in too much detail, and the various ceremonies themselves are outlined with accuracy.
And then there is the art and the artifacts. Some fine examples of Peyote Visual Arts are featured like the sacred implements used by the Road-Man and his helpers as well as the personal items, fans, gourd rattles and cedar storage boxes.
There are great pictures of silverwork, altar cloths, hide and ledger-book paintings, and sacred staffs from differing fireplaces.
Probably what I like most about this book, is the respectful and dignified approach to the subject itself. Even the title expresses respect.
The institution of the Native American Church has been controversial throughout it's whole history, but Daniel Swan assumes the topic from the standpoint of what it is to the people who attend and worship: the Art of an ancient American religion, and it's symbols of Faith and Belief.
An important contribution to Native American studies.......2003-03-21
The artistic traditions associated with the Native American Church are amazingly diverse and dynamic. Long neglected by scholars, Peyote Religious Art is now the definitive examination of this rich artistic field. While Peyotism is often misunderstood by both its detractors and its admirers, this clear and factual book is the result of Swan's long-term friendships with artists and other members of the church. It is beautifully written and wonderfully illustrated in color.
A Visual Feast for the Eyes and the Soul.......1999-10-15
Not only a wonderful book for the uninitiated, but a lovely work for those familiar not only with the NAC but also those featured in the book. Daniel Swan presents a well-written and enjoyable read on the topic.
Entheogens: Professional Listing.......1999-05-19
"Peyote Religious Art" has been selected for listing in "Religion and Psychoactive Sacraments: An Entheogen Chrestomathy."
Dr. Swan presents a vivid portrait of the art of the NAC........1999-04-21
I am truely taken by this book. As a fan of Native American artwork, I found this book not only informative regarding the struggle for religios freedom taking place in our nations heartland, but the images to go with it were incredable. A must read for any one interested in current Native American affairs, Native American religious history, or Native American traditional artwork.

Book Description
Modern Masters Volume 2: George Perez contains page after page of rare and unseen artwork, illustrating a comprehensive interview with Perez on his stellar career. This second volume in the new Modern Masters series delves into the artist's life, as Perez discusses his Puerto Rican upbringing, how he broke into the comics field, and the attention to detail that has made him one of comics' top talents.
Customer Reviews:
One of my Top 3 favorites in the series..........2007-05-05
Whether you like his art style or not, George Perez has had a truly phenomenal career- it's really great to read about(!).
I especially like the behind-the-scenes info on the various situations & projects he's been involved with over the years. Things like which inkers he felt complimented his work, how he feels about his own work looking back on it, and the unique relationships he's had with various creators are detailed here. From being an assistant to Rich Buckler & Kirby swipes, to becoming famous for Teen Titans & Avengers, the many comics he's been a part of are all visited in a pretty personal interview overall. Like the John Byrne interview, this entry in the MM series is sprinkled liberally with various pieces of black & white artwork, featuring both pure pencils, and inks. It's all exclusively black & white here, unlike some other entries in the series.
My other current favorites in the series include Modern Masters, Vol. 7: John Byrne (Modern Masters), and Modern Masters, Vol. 5: Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (Modern Masters). Yet they keep on releasing great interviews!
Truly a Modern Comics Master.......2007-02-10
George Perez is a fitting subject for this series of books -- He's been in the comics business for decades, as both artist and writer. This volume includes an extensive interview with Perez, touching on virtually everything he worked on, including the Avengers, the Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, The Justice League, Crisis on Infinite Earths, JLA/Avengers and many more. Following the interview (which itself is liberally sprinkled with art), there is a 28 page art gallery featuring lots of previously unpublished pieces.

Cool.......2007-08-29
This book is so cool! It makes the topic clear and fun at the same time.
Cartoons add little and subtract much.......2007-08-23
I have a B.S. (from a school you haven't heard of) and an M.S. (from one you have) in mathematics, and I teach math, but probability and statistics was my _worst_ undergraduate math class (I avoided it in grad school). I came across this book, and I bought it on a chance. I'm sorry to say, it was wasted money...
1) The cartoons at best merely illustrate points made in the text; at worst they are irrelevant interruptions. For example, here we have a cartoon of the reader in a straightjacket after the text mentions calculus. And there's a cartoon of a man rolling dice. This sort of stuff does not advance the discussion.
2) The cartoon format reduces the space available for text. The discussion is therefore abbreviated and compressed; points are made once only, without examples, and often after skipping important steps. I think it's _more_ difficult than a standard textbook.
3) There are no exercises! Who ever heard of a math book without exercises? We learn by doing, I always tell my students, not by just reading or listening.
I think this book may be useful to a former student of statistics who wants a review but I can't think of anyone else who would get much out of it.
A dry textbook + cartoons.......2007-06-12
Whenever I try reading this book my eyes just gloss over. It's extremely dry material with cartoons added to every page to make it seem as if it'll be entertaining and easy to learn from but IMO it's neither. On the contrary, it would probably be best as a reference book. Almost every page has a new equation or symbol on it and I rarely felt that they were adequately discussed. "What does it do? When is it useful? What does it mean if the value is high/low?" are questions I constantly asked myself and the book doesn't take the time to answer.
Not for the feint of heart.......2007-05-19
Some people will complain that the book is difficult and/ or uninteresting. To this I say, "Dude, it's statistics! Mr. Gonick makes the best of a difficult subject. This is certainly not less friendly than your stats text book." If you want an easy laugh, get a Get Fuzzy compilation, if you want a different and more intuitive approach to statistics, this is your best bet.
Ok resource.......2007-05-13
My MBA program suggested this book to all incoming first years. In reading it so far, it outlines the concepts well, but doesn't give enough opportunity to practice them and get comfortable with them. I am not getting very much out of it, but I may use it as a resource when I am taking my actual stats class.

Customer Reviews:
Frustrating.......2005-03-21
Unfortunately the abundance of use-free filler left me with a sour taste and doubt about the author's credibility. An example would be the page and a half spent on the importance of having a lot of pencils and paper. Writers don't generally need to be told this.
By and large I found the inset comments from other comics writers more helpful than the author's content, (though some of it is lifted directly from other books.)
I would not recommend this book.
Doesn't really help much.......2003-07-28
It's well put together, but if you are in fact trying to break into the business, she basically says that you have to know someone, be it an editor or an artist, and that's notparticularly helpful, IMHO.
It does what it says.......2003-04-18
Books about the technique of writing (plot, character, etc.) are very easy to find. This is not one of those kinds of books. This book is about the BUSINESS OF COMIC BOOKS.
As the author says, "This book is not designed to instruct you on how to develop your writing talents. Instead, I offer business advice and suggestions for honing those skills. I propose ways for you to find out where your abilities stand in relation to industry requirements...."
The author does an excellent job of telling you what to do AFTER you're fairly confident in your writing abilities. How should you format your proposals and scripts? Who should you approach at comic conventions, and how can you impress them? Should you send out unsolicited manuscripts? If you have writing skills, and the desire to write for comics, but don't know how to go about doing it for a living, then this is the book for you!
By the way, if you want a book on developing your writing talents, you'll get a lot more out of "The DC Guide to Writing Comics" by Denny O'Neil.
A very good place to start!.......2001-09-20
This is an easy read and gives information only a true insider would know.
If you are looking for a job..........1999-03-24
If you want to look for a job it may be useful for you because some advise may be applied to some different cases. If you want to know what you may face when trying to look for a job in the comic business, then this is for you. If you want to know some basics about how to present your samples and some basics about script structure, this may be for you.
If you are out of USA and you want to get into comic business that may not be for you. If you are looking for a manual that tells you extensively all the secrets, hints and tips to write a good plot and a good script, then look somewhere else. It has some of that but it is not very long.
Basically this book is just some advise combined with some text boxes with Q&A interviews to some writers who work in that industry. It is not easy to get into this business considering that you have not the visual advantage of the artist and your work requires some concentration to evaluate if your job is good enough or not.
The author insists too much in some ideas like "do not hang around" when meeting or trying to contact editors.
If you are a newcomer writer without experience, I suggest 1)Work on your self-esteem first 2)Read this book and do not feel overwhelmed by this book 3)Do whatever you judge as what must be done. This is for you.
If you are not a newcomer writer without experience, I suggest you look for something else.
