Great Replacement for our old book.......2007-01-17
I managed to have this book added as an alternate after fighting for years to teach another text, Humanities Through the Arts. That text had a very bad habit of talking in circles and I spent more time trying to explain the book than I did teaching the course. Our students normally have little to no exposure to the Arts and are easily discouraged. Not only is this little book half the price of the other but it is very straight forward in its approach. If you want a book that offers lots of chapters for testing purposes this isn't it. If you want a book that nails down the basics, especially if you do a lot of group work and use projects rather than test, this text nails down the basics..
Pretty good book.......2005-01-02
I have taught a course on the Humanities using this book, and found it mostly spot on in its specific contents. How to present all of the Humanities using one paperback? But - with just a few exceptions - this presents a good first look and useful rules of thumb in approaching the various disciplines. In areas that are underserved, such as Landscape Art, it actually fills a void. I recommend it and will use it again.
Informative.......2004-01-05
I used this book for my introduction to fine arts class and thought it was very good. Easy to understand and follow, and gave good information straight out without haveing to search for defintions or other stuff.
If it were possible...........2003-11-17
If it were possible to describe this book in stars it would be 0 stars. Here are just a few of the problems found within the text. 1) Writing is boring. 2) Some of the pictures are repeated in the black & white sections. 3) The usage of webpages instead of having illustrations & pictures makes the text boring. 4) No companion website for the web addresses noted.
In other words - it can bore a student to death!

HORRIBLE.......2002-12-04
This book is the worst book i ever read in my life. I wouldn't recommend this to anybody. Carroll doesn't know what the hell she is talking about, let alone know anything about art.
Beach Reading.......2002-08-21
This is what I packed to the lake this summer. The suspense of following art thinking from verisimitude to conceptualism. The romance of potent examples from the history of art! The tragedy of the Fall of the aesthetic enterprise. The hope of uncovering the as-yet unsolved mysteries in defining a work of Art. All told with, if not humor, at least honsety.
Book Description
This book provides an accessible introduction to aesthetics, especially in relation to literature, and is particularly useful for readers new to literary theory and contemporary philosophy. Anne Sheppard discusses what it is that all works of art have in common - what gives them their value as art - and asks, wisely, whether there can ever be one correct interpretation of a work of art. The scope of the book includes chapters on form, beauty and aesthetic appreciation, and the relationship between art and morals.

A perfect fit.......2005-05-20
I inherited use of this text as the preferred text for the aesthetics portion of a course on Truth, Beauty, and Goodness. Since I chose Quine's "Web of Belief" and the Kenny Reader on Wittgenstein for the section on Truth, so that students can engage the contemporary issues associated with truth from an overall perspective and actually do philosophy via the extraordinarily subversive energy of Wittgenstein's questions, the Sheppard text fits perfectly as the text that frames the issues over aesthetics in a way that demonstrates the lessons learned from the first two books. This is also short enough to cover the main issues quickly so that there is time left for goodness at the end of the course!
Great, but pricy introduction.......2005-01-16
Check this out if you're looking for a concise and well-written introduction to the philosophy of art. The author explores why we feel art is so important, what makes 'good' art, and major ideas concerning art as introduced by other philosopher.
(...) It's 154-pages, paperback, and has several b&w photos of paintings referred to in the text.

Any artist would be interested in this book.......2005-06-30
This book is the biggest contribuiton to my point of view on what is art, what is beauty, and whether or not are these concepts objective or subjective in nature. Among the subjects Valentine writes about are the "What is Art?" question, followed by subjects such as Art as Expression, Formalism, Art Criticism, Symbolism and my favorite: Beauty. Each chapter has a section with essays by other philosophers and art critics, that contradict or support Valentine's ideas.
Every subject is defined and explained in a very simple manner, with detail and several examples.
My favorite book on art, and one of my favorite books in general.
Book Description
Now in its third edition, (1st edn 1997, 2nd edn 2000) Philosophy of the Arts is distinctive edn. aesthetics textbook because it is structured largely by art-form, with a chapter each on music, poetry, architecture, painting and film - most other books in this area study the subject by theory (art as imitation/expression/significant form/etc.) or by concept (evaluation, interpretation, representation, etc.).

You need to understand the problem to design a solution.......1999-11-21
This is a very important book. People these days think that `only good news sells' and that it is necessary to be positive at all times. Tony Fry's book shows that it is more important to face up to the true extent of the world's current problems. Fry asks: how did we become so unsustainable? His answer is: by design. He looks at key aspects of modern design and finds, rather than something to celebrate, a history of `defuturing', that is, case studies of how our futures are being taken away from us. In arguing his points, Fry demonstrates an extensive knowledge of the history of design (for example streamlining, the Bauhaus, but also television and computers), and a comprehensive command of philosophy (for example Heidegger and Confucianism). The result is indeed a new design philosophy, one that is urgently needed given how ignorant many designers are about ramifications of design decisions. This is not an easy book, but what it teaches about the way most designed products in turn design unsustainable lifestyles is crucial to learning how to design sustainable futures.

A+ ----- THIS IS AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO AESTHETICS.......1999-04-20
The reading from this book was part of the requirements for a course on philosophical aesthetics and I have to say that it is THE MOST PHILOSOPHICALLY CHALLENGING and REWARDING book that I have ever read - EVER. (the dialogues of Plato are serious contenders, but insofar as modern philosophy goes, THIS BOOK IS *IT*). We also had to read from "contextualizing aesthetics: from Plato to Lyotard" - and the advantages of Townsend's book over the other are the following:
1)close philosophical discussion of the main issues - aesthetic experience, the audience, the artist, the relationship of the audience to the artist, the recriprocal relationship, the role of history in the creation of art, etc. etc. - with a view to EXPLAIN to the novice to aesthetics the problems in the field. Not mere selections (which I may add, are a hindrance and NOT a help if they are not complete texts, since the reader is left at the mercy of the discretion of the editors)
2)the most WONDERFUL suggestions of secondary and primary reading at the conclusion of EACH AND EVERY CHAPTER.
3)lucid explanations, clear, concise, elegant English prose - philosophically challenging without the so-called philosophical manner of writing to obfuscate the issues rather than clarify them.
4)all i can say is WOW!! I hope the author receives a copy of this so that he can see how much his work is appreciated!!!
Book Description
Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art is an essential introduction to some of the central topics and approaches being debated in contemporary aesthetics and philosophy of art. By taking a stand on each of the issues addressed and arguing for certain resolutions and against others, the text does not simply present a controversy in its current state of play, but instead helps to advance it toward a solution.
Book Description
This book provides a practical reading guide to the thought of Plotinus, the great philosopher who was born in Alexandria in the third century a.d., lived in Rome and wrote in Greek. Deeply immersed in earlier Greek philosophy, especially Plato and Aristotle, Plotinus’ thought was to have an immense influence upon the theology and philosophy of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, as well as to bear a deep resonance with the major forms of Eastern mystical thought, particularly Buddhism and Hinduism. At the same time, Plotinus' philosophy remains unique in its own right. Corrigan's work presents, in an accessible and yet authoritative way, three treatises translated in full, as well as several other major passages representative of the wide range of thought to be found in Plotinus’ Enneads. There is extensive and detailed commentary accompanying each translation, which helps the reader to work his or her way through Plotinus’ often highly compressed thought. The concluding chapter draws together the practical and theoretical significance of Plotinus’ writings and situates them in an accessible manner for both first-time reader and scholar alike within the subsequent vast history of Neoplatonism which extends through the Mediaeval and Renaissance worlds and right into modern times. This book is intended to be of use for anyone who wants to read and understand Plotinus, non-specialists and specialists, and it will be particularly helpful for students and scholars of philosophy, history of ideas, aesthetic theory, and literature and religious thought, both Western and Eastern.

A thorough and far-reaching academic sourcebook.......2005-08-11
Also available in a hardcover edition (1557532338, $58.95), Reading Plotinus: A Practical Introduction To Neo-Platonism by KevinCorrigan (Visiting Professor, Humanities Department, Emory University, Atlanta, Corrigan and Professor of Classics and Philosophy, St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan, Canada). Plotinus (204/205-270) was a philosopher whose kindly views on the soul, time and eternity, free will, and other topics earned him the respect and admiration of those close to him, and derisive insults such as "big driveller" and "plagiarist" by those who did not. His advanced views are presented in a fluid translation of their original text, followed by an extensive and exhaustive commentary. A thorough and far-reaching academic sourcebook, intended especially for college students of philosophy, but also containing deeply spiritual contemplations that will resonate with the seeker of mystical matters about the soul, the afterlife, and oneness with the universe. Additional chapters offer a broad-reaching summary and insight into Plotinus' views as a whole, as well as bit-by-bit analysis. An excellent resource and reference for college libraries or any student of Plotinus and Neo-Platonism.

Book Description
Theomusicology is musicology as a theologically informed discipline. Borrowing thought and method from anthropology, sociology, psychology, and philosophy, it has as its subject the myriad cultural worlds of ethical, religious, and mythological belief. Theomusicological research into cultural/intercultural reflections on the ethical, the religious, and the mythological involves the study of music in the domain or communities of the sacred, the secular, and the profane. By examining the depths of sacrality, secularity, and profanity in the music of civilization's many cultures, the theomusicologist can increasingly discern how particular peoples perceive the universal mysteries that circumscribe their mortal existence, and how the ethics, theologies, and mythologies to which they subscribe shape their worlds. To accomplish his goal, Spencer divides his book into two parts. Part One, "The Domain of Theomusicology," functions as a methodological exposition to Part Two. It defines the meaning of and suggested method for theomusicology and delineates the theomusicologist's best and broadest possible perspective on the world. Part Two, "The Discourses of Theomusicology," illustrates how theomusicology can, and at its best does, involve dialogue with different disciplines as well as a gamut of historical epochs and movements. Each chapter is divided into sections based on the particular text theomusicology has read and interacted with. Spencer's work establishes theomusicology as a scholarly discipline and a valid research approach to studying world religious, mythological, and ethical beliefs via music. It is essential reading for historical musicologists, ethnomusicologists, and scholars of sacred music.

Maybe best of first fours...!.......2001-01-23
I say this is more (much more) bloody than others of four ordinary ElfQuest, but it is writed well. There is a story much morer than ever in "Fire & Flight". Kahvi's the new character in this( you see her in picture) , and she is the chief on elkriders, who call themselves Go-Backs. Go-Backs live in shadow of mountains were is a HOME OF HIGH ONES. And with wolfriders they found it. once more i will say: Wolfriders never die. Yes, I know one-eye just did in a "Captives of Blue mountain", but, if you read this, you se how many of Go-Backs die. And that is normal. But NONE of wolfriders. They have armors as much as Go-backs.
But to end this, I tell you: Wendy and Richard teach us in every book , and they tell about life.
eq book 4.......2000-09-07
VERY GOOD!! the best yet.
eq book 4.......2000-09-07
VERY GOOD!! the best yet.
The BEST work ever produced from the "Elfquest" couple!.......2000-04-09
Believe me, you just won't believe this! This is the most skillfully drawn and written part of the whole "Elfquest" series next to the part about the adventures in the Blue Mountain. In fact, you won't see anything like this ever again in any Elfquest tales, nor even the future ones yet to come, I suspect. The great epic of war against the bloodthirsty Trolls of the Great White North begins right after the imprisonment of elves in the Blue Mountain by the witchlike Winnowill - a real teeth-rattling clash of so many different characters, old or new with their individual personalities and differences. In additional, a whole galaxy of the fantastic environment on the far-off World of Two Moons really opens up for the very first time to your mortal human eyes - from the monstrous labyrinth of the Troll lair to the shimmering walls of the long-lost Palace of the High Ones - with a whole bagful of earth-shaking surprises to boot! If you already have this rare book or are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy, I sincerely promise you that you just won't be able to put it down, nor read it just once!
The culmination of the Quest, revisited.......2000-01-02
For the first time since the original Elfquest story was released as a 20-issue series (from 1978 to 1984), it has been published in the original black-and-white format; the new Reader's Collection printing of Book 4 includes issues 16 to 20 (the last five), dealing with the elves' campaign to wrest control of their ancestral home, the Palace of the High Ones, from a hostile, heavily armed tribe of trolls.
By now much ink has been devoted to the originality and emotional conviction of the Pinis' tale, and of course Wendy's artistic skills need no further explanation. However, it is good to see, once again, the sheer quality - and expressiveness - of the artist's pencil-work as originally presented; some of this was obscured by the mediocre coloring of the editions published since the late Eighties (quite unlike the elegant coloring-work of the earlier Donning versions of the first four volumes, still worth having after all these years).
It has been said many times before, but it should be said, again, that the Pinis demonstrate their storytelling prowess by breaking the conventions of fantasy fiction; most importantly, the fulfillment of the quest is seen to be costly, even in the loss both of lives and innocence; and the battle, though necessary for the elves to reach their goal, is not their be-all and end-all - the truly life-changing events lie further ahead. The climax of this story possesses a nuance and thoughtfulness worthy of "real" fiction, and this, even more than the superlative artwork, gives the tale its substance and emotional power.
A final note on the presentation: some printing errors have unfortunately crept into this Reader's Collection book (as they also have in volumes 5 and 12a (the first printing only) of the series) - many pages are out of their proper order, so if you are new to EQ, try to find and earlier edition of Book 4 to enable yourself to follow the plot correctly. That caution aside, it is good to have the original EQ storyline again - now priced to gain a new audience.
