Book Description
This artist's book by the internationally celebrated Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist is literally a chocolate box themed to address the last, mysterious 15 minutes before the fall of man. Published by one of the most important publishers of international art and design books and edited by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, it is a deluxe and seductive object that will also serve as the official publication for Rist's exhibition at this year's Venice Biennale. The box includes a poster and images of saints, dreams and ideas of paradise. Rist burst onto the international art scene in the mid-1990s with mesmerizing video installations influenced by visual art, music, architecture, and social politics. Her witty, poetic, and experimental work fuses natural and urban worlds, and often features erotic or uncanny images of the human body, particularly her own. Inspired by artists like Nam June Paik and Yoko Ono, Rist's work expands into gallery spaces in a manner that encourage viewers to see and experience art in unconventional ways. Boxed, 7.5 x 10 in./25 pgs / Illustrated throughout.

Book Description
Despite the social sciences' growing fascination with tattooing--and the immense popularity of tattoos themselves--the practice has not left much of a historical record. And, until very recently, there was no good context for writing a serious history of tattooing in the West. This collection exposes, for the first time, the richness of the tattoo's European and American history from antiquity to the present day. In the process, it rescues tattoos from their stereotypical and sensationalized association with criminality.
The tattoo has long hovered in a space between the cosmetic and the punitive. Throughout its history, the status of the tattoo has been complicated by its dual association with slavery and penal practices on the one hand and exotic or forbidden sexuality on the other. The tattoo appears often as an involuntary stigma, sometimes as a self-imposed marker of identity, and occasionally as a beautiful corporal decoration.
This volume analyzes the tattoo's fluctuating, often uncomfortable position from multiple angles. Individual chapters explore fascinating segments of its history--from the metaphorical meanings of tattooing in Celtic society to the class-related commodification of the body in Victorian Britain, from tattooed entertainers in Germany to tattooing and piercing as self-expression in the contemporary United States. But they also accumulate to form an expansive, textured view of permanent bodily modification in the West.
By combining empirical history, powerful cultural analysis, and a highly readable style, this volume both draws on and propels the ongoing effort to write a meaningful cultural history of the body. The contributors, representing several disciplines, have all conducted extensive original research into the Western tattoo. Together, they have produced an unrivalled account of its history. They are, in addition to the editor, Clare Anderson, Susan Benson, James Bradley, Ian Duffield, Juliet Fleming, Alan Govenar, Harriet Guest, Mark Gustafson, C. P. Jones, Charles MacQuarrie, Hamish Maxwell-Stewart, Stephan Oettermann, Jennipher A. Rosecrans, and Abby Schrader.

Art on the human skin.......2006-02-28
Anyone interested in a serious understanding of the cultural importance of tattooing in the West would benefit from reading this book. (Caplan is now a distinguished professor of history at Oxford University.) If you're looking for something superficial and sensational, look elsewhere. This book offers much richness between its covers.
Reads like a medical journal.......2003-07-15
I can't discourage this book enough. It takes the interesting world of tattooing and makes it into a bland history lesson that doesnt even emphasize the more interesting aspects of its past. Tattooing is one subject that is generally vey interesting no matter how you study it but this book manages to make it boring. At times it gets so far off the subject you wonder why you dont just read a real history book instead. Very bland and reads like a medical journal.

Customer Reviews:
Don't Judge This Book By Its Cover.......2004-01-20
This book exists to make Zen more accessible to the general public. For those people that practice Zen, the essence of Zen can only be felt or only be understood but not through words or pictures. As one teaching of Zen would have it, you would appreciate how beautiful the moon is rather than the finger that points you to that moon. I have to admit that this book manages to clarify certain teachings that are also mentioned in other Zen books. I'm not saying that this comic book provides me with the absolute truth about certain Zen sayings but it does provide me with an insight. Everyone has their own ways of getting to the original thinking & if this book cuts the cake, so be it. If we think that this is merely a comic book, then, it is a delusion! Remember, don't judge a book by its cover. This book is profoundly serious. Highly recommended, light-hearted & enjoyable to read.
Delightful!.......2003-07-11
Hard to imagine that a cartoon could unfold the depths of Zen. Perhaps it is the fact the cartoons are brief yet encapsulate so much. Personally, I find it to be in the expressions of the characters in the drawings that tell the story. I really feel the smiles throughout the book and can almost see them winking along with that smile.
Never straying from the seriousness of Zen, this little gem really reveals the joy that lies underneath. A great way to get started; a great little reminder for those already underway.
Forget Those Heavy Books About Zen.......2003-07-03

TCC's great drawings and simple explanations brings you the Zen thinking to your home.
A must have for anyone interested in eastern culture.

Just getting started on your desire to understand eastern philosophies? Have you stood at the bookstore for hours pouring over where to start and what to buy?
Any of this authors books are a wonderful place to start. The reason? Because these books are all about the title subject in a nutshell, easy to read as a comic book, the story lines and illustrations are wonderful, and after you read this as well as all the other books by Tsai, you will have a great, well rounded start on your path and will know what you want to study more deeply!
To add, when others ask you about your interest in eastern philosophy, you can get them started here as well, because these books are fun, consise, and you know they will enjoy them over and over again!
Shouts of Nothingness: profound, yet obvious.......2001-02-16
"Comics are just words and pictures. You can say anything with words and pictures." ---someone I don't recall.
This comic book contains one hundred Zen Tales (koans), and I have heard some of them before. They seem to gain something when presented in this format. The author brings out something of the shock that is enlightenment that I hadn't really felt in the stroies before. The artwork is simple, yet effective. The writing is the same. The ideas conveyed are both profound and obvious. And, of course, it is a very enjoyable read.

Another Way to Experience Zen.......2003-04-02
If you are looking for fun, bite-sized lessons in Zen Buddhism that will leave you pondering, this is an excellent source. I would recommend it both as an introduction -- to get the newcomer thinking about Zen concepts -- as well as entertainment for an experienced Zen practitioner. The lessons are usually very subtle, but then Zen itself is a subtle art. By no means does this book delve deeply into Zen concepts. But, what better explanation of Zen simplicity than a little book of simple comics such as this?
Zen to carry with you in an empty hand.......2002-07-15
This is a great little collection of zen comics.
Most of the stories involve the old monk and his #1 disciple learning about what zen means. The stories last only a few panels, are often humerous, and almost always end with some enlightening piece of advice for the moment.
Salajan's art is very simple and reminiscent of japanese calligraphy. The style complements the subject very well.
I can't think of a better way to illustrate zen in a comic book form. I recomend this little treasure highly.
Fun, a real delite.......2001-08-27
This book is a great into to Zen, and Budhism itself, transfering wisdom with humor. A picture is worth a thousand words, a laugh a thousand pages.
Zen Comics: an experience to savour........1999-12-11
Salajan's magnum opus is unique in its ultimate perspicacity - indeed, no longer may we condemn the ideals of Zen as naive yet unimaginably sly - and ontological compassion. From such things as these, merely seen from the shallow trough wherein mediocrity ploughs its slothful, slope-shouldered furrow, are apotheoses made. Their magestic simplicity is overwhelmingly found to be paradoxical yet unequivocally transparent by its felicitously characteristical elemental elimination of the metaphysical conscience. Robert Frost, in parlance of colloquy, describes a "yearningly passionate detachment" as he wanders within the intellective organ of the human heart, suggesting a "vita caeca" beneath the eiderdown of her Taoist vanity. An exceptional book, perfect for all the family (except the blatantly decrepit). 10/10.

This book contains all the basic philosophy of the great master.

Helps keep things straight.......2001-03-17
One of the best things about this book is it puts a face on Confucius and, more importantly, his disciples. It's difficult to read The Analects (which this book uses a few sayings from) and keep straight who's who; this book helps a lot. The last section with a brief bio on a few of the disciples is fantastic. I can find no other source to compare to this. Now when I read The Analect I see the faces from this book when different people are mentioned. My only complaint is that different translations of Confucius' work seem to use slightly different names then those used in this book. It can be a bit confusing when this book is the first one you read, but I would still HIGHLY recommend it.
A Great Introduction to Confucianism!.......2000-08-12
The Cartoon Chinese Philosophy books of this series interest me for two reasons: I like Chinese History and I have to teach it to high school kids.
On a personal level I enjoy reading through these books and find it much more useful than some of the straight translations even though they may be more complete and more pleasing to academics. In addition to the Confucius book, I have enjoyed both Daoist books and the version of the Art of War.
As a teacher, I like this book even better. New York State requires high school kids to have 2 years of world history. In this new political correct world, world history is no longer dominated by Europe. In fact, must of the New York State exam is about Asia and Africa. Thus Confucianism is a very important concept to teach.
Filial Piety, the concept of order and relationships, and the 5 Confucianian relationships are extremely important. But they are not fun things to the average teenager. There are many lessons we can get from Confucius as adults, for kids its a bit harder. However, these comic books make teaching Confucius so much easier and effective. The kids like to read them and they get so much more from them.
So in short, yes this is not the complete Confucius. But for anyone who wants to read a visually pleasing edition or teaches this is quite good.
A Great Starting Book... and Wonderful Keepsake.......2000-02-14
This book was wonderful! While I especially recommended it for beginners who are new to the teachings of Confucius, I know this book will surely be interesting to anyone. The first time I picked this comic book up, I read through 60 pages without putting it down again. The first section of the book is about the events in Confucius' life, while the second section deals with the Analects. Although I'm just a beginner to the teachings of Confucius, these comics have definitely captured my interest, and left me wanting to know more about Confucius' wisdom and philosophy. The cartoons give you various little snippets of Confucius' ideology, and leave you highly interested in learning more on each topic. I'm glad I started off with this book. Now I'm reading more comprehensive books on Confucianism; however, I will always have this little comic book to pull of the shelf and flip through.... time and time again.

To bad heis n't a real guru! This book is very to the point and real. If poeple lived their lives like Ziggy, it wouldbe a much nicer life and world. We would slow down and not let the things that stress us out do so as much. Get into some ziggyism's and take a break.
A gentle, highly enjoyable and entertaining compilation.......2002-10-07
The Zen Of Ziggy is the latest collection of single-panel (and the occasional Sunday sequence) comics about a little bald guy, the pets he adores, and his constant struggle to catch any sort of break in life. Perpetually faced with TV shows that have given up any pretense of disguising their lack of merit; park birds who criticize his taste in low-quality popcorn; psychoanalysts who offer reassurances about "page fright"; and a great deal more, Ziggy's cheerful good humor and ability to survive the little mishaps that innately resemble those that everyone has encountered before at one time or another, lending a wry and universal empathy to this gentle, highly enjoyable and entertaining compilation.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel
ASIN: 0740736310 |
Book Description
The golfer lines up the shot. It's a long one, and the chances of acing it are nil. He says a prayer, swings, and- hallelujah!-he scores a hole in one. Many golfers confess to murmuring earnest prayers that they, too, may join the 42,000 people a year who catch lightning in a bottle and score a hole in one. It's an excitement that many lucky golfers say they remember with more clarity than their first kiss. That's because nothing in the grand old game is as mysterious yet mundane as the ace. Scott Hoch has had 26; fellow pro Fred Couples just two. Blind men and women have hit them, as have first-time golfers, three-year-old toddlers, and hundred-year-old widows. Richard Nixon is the only president to have scored one and he said it was a greater thrill than winning an election. Filled with fun facts and anecdotes, Hole in One! is a comprehensive clearinghouse of unusual stories involving the aura and accomplishment of scoring an ace. Readers will find out how duffers call upon unusual good luck charms and customs from foreign countries to ensure their swinging success. Hole in One! is the perfect book for all golfers who love the game, whether they're accomplished players or rank amateurs.

If you are a golf fan, or even a fan of sports, then this is the book for you. The book is throughly entertaining, and filled with amusing anecdotes. After reading this story, my goal is to go out on the golf course, acheive a hole in one, and be featured in Mr. Rodell's next book.
