the wondrous world of water.......2001-11-18
This is an exquisite picture book in a square format, with an excellent layout, thick lustrous pages, and superb color reproduction.
The brief and beautifully written essays in each chapter are in bold and large print, and are more about the chapter subject than the illustrations. There is beside each picture, 2 sections in smaller print, one giving artist/size etc. details and the other a description of the piece.
Some of the chapter headings are:
"The Eternal Sea"...magical tales told with a paintbrush. A 14th century Islamic manuscript painting of "Jonah and the Whale" is captivating.
"The Sea's Bounty" with N.C. Wyeth's magnificent 1938 "Deep Cove Lobster Man" among the many gorgeous pictures.
"The Fickle Sea", with Irish artist James Dixon's 1966 "The Sinking of the Titanic", that is a gripping, emotional depiction of the event.
Other chapters are: "Expanding Horizons", "War at Sea", "Ports of Call", and "Emanations".
There are over 150 fabulous illustrations in this volume, many that I've never seen before. Kudos to Peter Neill, who has put together a book that's a delight for those of us who love the sea...and as Walter Cronkite, another sea-lover, concludes in his poetic preface to this wonderful book: "I wish you fair winds on this painted ocean".

Watch out!.......2003-06-21
Note that this is the 3rd edition, which had deleted the historical references to 1948 Palestine which were in the 1st (B&W) & second (color) editions. This makes it less interesting. The earlier eds were more interesting because of their historical content, like the Blue Lotus. Unfortunately, I don't know where to find them.
Tintin is just wonderful.......2001-07-19
This is a splendid book. Beginning with the slightly dimwitted but highly amusing antics of Thomson and Thompson, and ending with one of Abdullah's pranks, it is filled with all the adventure and humour characteristic of the Tintin books. It's wonderful and I recommend it to all.
Book Description
Black & White & Noir explores America's pulp modernism through penetrating readings of the noir sensibility lurking in an eclectic array of media: Office of War Information photography, women's experimental films, and African-American novels, among others. It traces the dark edges of cultural detritus blowing across the postwar landscape, finding in pulp a political theory that helps explain America's fascination with lurid spectacles of crime.
We are accustomed to thinking of noir as a film form popularized in movies like The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, and, more recently, Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. But it is also, Paula Rabinowitz argues, an avenue of social and political expression. This book offers an unparalleled historical and theoretical overview of the noir shadows cast when the media's glare is focused on the unseen and the unseemly in our culture. Through far-ranging discussions of the Starr Report, movies such as Double Indemnity and The Big Heat, and figures as various as Barbara Stanwyck, Kenneth Fearing, and Richard Wright, Rabinowitz finds in film noir the representation of modern America's attempt to submerge and mask its violent history of racial and class anatagonisms. Black & White & Noir also explores the theory and practice of stilettos, the ways in which girls in the 1950s viewed film noir as a secret language about their mothers' pasts, the extraordinary tone-setting photographs of Esther Bubley, and the smutty aspect of social workers' case studies, among other unexpected twists and provocative turns.

Short and sweet, I loved every story. John Shirley rocks the world. I hope to read more.
HAha (wimper), ewww, DON'T Touch mE, brain hurts........2000-11-29
John Shirley's notorius, exciting, revolutionary collection. John Shirley's talent lies in his abilty to shock, and inspire many emotions at once. Many of the stories in this collection are very funny, and some are extremely shocking and depressing, they span many genres, but all very distinct to John Shirley. My personal favorite in this is called "'I want to get married,' says the world's smallest man". The small person in question is and up-and-coming actor, working to achive his dream of working with his hero, Arnold Swartzanagre. He also has an article in the Enquirer, with an adress for women to write to if they want to marry him. The woman who responds is a crack whore. Funny but disturbing. Some of these stories also apear in Shirley's other, larger short story collection "Really, Really, Really, Really, Weird Stories" which i also would recomend.
Book Description
A collection of quotables from those gritty movies from the mid-forties to the mid-fifties featuring losers and drifters, dreamers and grifters, immortalized by the TV late show.

Customer Reviews:
This series is a great introduction to grammar!.......2007-09-24
I use this series of books throughout the school year in third grade before jumping into the parts of speech. They are a fun and engaging way to start off a lesson.
Time to learn your grammar!.......2004-07-09
These books are so good at helping kids learn the parts of speech. They give so many clear examples of sentences, with the specific part of speech in a different color so everyone will notice it. I used these in a classroom during english class and they all loved it. A+ to this book!
Takes the pain out of grammar!.......2002-12-04
Kudos to Brian P. Cleary and Brian Gable for their terrific book about Prepositions! My nine year-old learned all about the function of this difficult part of speech in the few minutes it took for us to sail through the funny, rhyming text. The illustrated cat-like characters are bright and colorful, and the prepositions themselves are highlighted to make thme easier to identify. Reminds me a little of the schoolhouse rock show from my childhood!
My Students finally know this part of speech!.......2002-04-02
I teach 4th grade in a suburban school system where the kids are pretty bright, but prepositions have always been a little sticky for this age group. Brian P. Cleary's new book, UNDER, OVER BY THE CLOVER: What is a Preposition, is a class favorite, and also a favorite of mine because it takes on a kind of tricky part of speech and leaves my kids smiling. I liked his other books about nouns and verbs and adjectives also! This clarifies the preposition's role in our language, and is funny and catchy to boot!

Book Description
Withdrawn and seemingly fragile, Sue is a Four-Leaf Clover who possesses unique abilities and is feared by a militaristic government that isolates her from the world. Her confinement ends when Sue insists that she must journey to a fabulous playground called Fairy Park. Fearing subversive organizations that would kill to capture the "Clover" and exploit her abilities, the government asks Kazuhiko, a noble and dejected soldier, to come out of retirement in order to escort and protect Sue on her journey.
Later, Sue regrets having ever left the cage after she reveals to Kazuhiko her connection to her guardian, and Ora, the woman that Kazuhiko loved. Now Kazuhiko is even more determined to protect Sue even if it means giving up his own life battling a surrounding Azaien army!
Customer Reviews:
Not for everyone.......2007-07-28
This is one of the more artistic manga I've read, both stylistically, prose and storywise. This is not a 'beginning at the beginning and read through the end' story, there are jumps, gray areas, things left unexplained that the reader has to put together, etc. Overall, I like it, but someone who is used to a more straight forward style may find it pretentious, annoying, or just plain bad.
Sweet story of love, loss, and seeing the world........2002-03-29
The second volume of Clover finishes off the main story. In fact, you'd be best of reading it just after finished volume one as it literally picks up where the first one left off.
This volume also has the real emotional wallop of the story. Volume One sets up the world the characters live in and the basic plot: former government agent Kazuhiko is assigned to take a young girl of unknown origin to an amusement park in a dark, future society. En route, of course, they run into opposition and a couple allies.
The real pay-off is when the two arrive at Fairy Park, and we learn why Kazuhiko was chosen, his connection to the girl, her desire to go to the deserter park in the first place, and her connection both to a song constantly playing in the background, and the singer, Kazuhiko's dead love Ora. There's some action, some destruction, some death, but the focus is clearly in this volume on the girl Gingestsu, who hasn't really seen too many other people, and the reasons why. The themes are similar to the desires of David the robot in Spielberg's movie A.I., though for different purposes and less "happy" ending, leaving the characters feeling haunted by the young girl, what she could do, and why she did what she did.
Another remarkable effort.......2002-03-22
Clamp goes on on their most exquisite manga so far on this second instalment of Clover. As the first volume, art talks for itself, and having the music/poem blending nicely on the story makes things even deeper, as you start to learn more about Sue's past, her relationship with the singer Ora and why everyone seems to be after Sue. Compared to the first volume, there's much more happening, so readers who felt uneasy with the plot may feel safer reading this than the previous one.
This volume hints on the next one, which is related to Ran's past (so actualy vol. 3 is a prequel to the story). If you enjoyed the first volume, then this one will pay your money back.
CLAMP Hits a Perfect Note Again.......2002-01-14
A cyber-fantasy, Clover is all at once symbolic, touching and astonishing. Playing on a familar theme of people with special powers who were once experimented on by the government, Clover cleverly sidesteps cliches. As is common with other CLAMP works, CLAMP tries to throw an interesting art twist into their story, with Magic Knight Rayearth they played off of the style of RPG video games. Clover uses the style of a film, with an airy arrangemnet of panels and scart-yet-detailed art. There is lots of white and black space and panels seem to float on the page. The plot itself is haunting, with anghst, love, and sensuality. The lives of the characters and delicately interwoven and they break obsticals that are infact themselves. The relationships are interesting and bring the plot together with a crechendo. There is no shortage of twists to pull you along and it promises not to disapoint.
You MUST read this.......2001-12-09
This is one of clamp's most beautiful works, it is so sad and touching it really brings the story together. Suu and Kazuhiko finally make it to Fairy Park and the ending is so amazing you never guess what happens. But you really find out more about Suu and the song that she sings. Clamp is renound for their artwork and it is so beatiful, between the amazingly detailed work and the way that they aranged the manga is so amazing. Because they arranged it in a very simplistic way with a lot of blank space but when there is art it is so beautiful and flows so well. The charaters are so complex and, this is just so amazing. You really can't desribe it. I recomend all of Clamp's work, whether is is magical girl "Card Captor Sakura" or the wonderful story line of "Magic Knights Rayearth". Also I highly recomend "Wish" it is another of Clamp's works and not avalable in English.

Customer Reviews:
A joyous, lilting little story, with some shadows........1999-10-20
Picking up this little gem of an old love story made my day. It covers several years of a young girl's life and takes her from childhood to - well, I mustn't say more. It is a bright, joyous tale of the wooing of a country maiden by a man twice her age, an artist accustomed to the big city life of Atlanta. Juliana's brothers don't want this dark mature stranger from the city in their young sister's life, and they take measures to make sure the two never see each other. There are pitfalls aplenty, Foster Kirk's age being the biggest. Juliana is searching for a meaning in her life. She is a very normal teenager, having more questions than answers. There are pitfalls aplenty as various other family members, and friends of Juliana's and Foster's, join the separating force. A good book to tuck in your bag for that next trip.

Regicide and the monster truck hair in a can conspiracy.......2005-02-25
In this seminal work Bill Geist explores the evidence surrounding the worlds oldes and best known conspiracy. From the dawn of humanity those who have tradtionaly run the monster truck and hair in a can conglomerates have conspired to kill the king of England. Not only does Bill Geist elucidate the vast conspiracy between these two infamous groups he spies on the British Royal Family and digs up some smelly dirt on Oliver Cromwell. I was lucky enough to have met Bill Geist (or a man who really looks like him) in a mens restroom in Queens and told him how much his book ment to me. He told me to get lost, so... but I really think that this book should be required reading for every school child or old person, heck evern forigners you know if they can read english.
Amen
A serious look at American industry, told with great humor!.......1999-03-07
Mr. Geist takes an extremely interesting look at entrepreneurs in America, proving things still are produced here and the American dream is alive and well. While he has obviously done his research and the underlying theme of the book can be serious, Mr. Geist has a wonderful, delightful sense of humor that permeates the book. After I finish this review, I'm going to seach for more books by him!
