Book Description
This gift book is a celebration in vibrant brushstrokes of one of the most-visited and romantic cities in the world.
Isabelle de Borchgrave arrives in Venice via the lagoon, with its singular luminosity and its scattered islands. She is enchanted by the city and its canals, vaparettos, water-taxis, gondolas, romantic bridges, and whimsical facades. After window shopping in chic boutiques, de Borchgrave ventures into the markets, bursting with life and color, before leading us to hidden museums, charming hotels, and restaurants. Illustrated throughout with charming paintings, My Venetian Sketchbook also features de Borchgrave's favorite addresses, allowing the reader to follow in the artist's footsteps and experience her very personal take on Venice.
Customer Reviews:
Way beyond San Marco square.......2007-01-03
I have a collection of travel sketchbooks and quite a few are from Venice. This is an exceptional one in the very best way. I was not looking for a "how-to" and didn't find it, I was looking for inspiration and a unique view, and I definitely found that. The paintings capture the mystery and magic of Venice in a very fresh, sometimes nearly abstract way. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in recording their own travels or just remembering time spent in Venice.

Customer Reviews:
Texas Women Can Write!.......2003-12-08
I liked a lot of the stories by these Texas women writers. Any of them could probably fill a whole book by herself with good stories. One of those is certainly Susie Kelly Flatau, the editor along with Diane Fanning. Her stories: The Well, When Time Stutters and The Screen Door--will stay with the reader long after the book is closed. They appear dark--but they end with defiance and with a look toward a new beginning--a happier time or at least a determination to exist without rancor. Maybe Susie Kelly Flatau is ready for a book of her own. I hope so. I would like to read more of her stories.
Stories with Attitude.......2003-01-10
At first glance you might wonder why you would want to read works by JUST Texas women, but when you sample just one or two you will be drawn in by the spirit and talent of this eclectic group of women writers. Almost every genre is present with nonfiction, poetry, and short fiction gracing the pages while introducing the reader to a spirit that is undeniably of a distinctly Texas brand. Think of this as a spirited literary journey through what is both real and mythical in a land of fierce independence and cultural distinction. Beginning with humorous nonfiction from such a notable woman author as Liz Carpenter and continuing through to the brief, yet heartfelt, poetry of Teresa Palomo Acosta, the reader follows a literary itinerary across the vast countryside of what seems like "a whole 'nother country" without ever needing a passport or dictionary (well, maybe a local interpreter might come in handy!) Treat yourself to an articulate slice of Texan life as boisterous and thought provoking as can be found on paper within the borders of red boots and plenty of attitude.

Fun nostalgia. One of the better post-death stories!.......2005-05-31
For the modern Superman, the stories up to (and maybe including) the death and return are generally considered by fans to be the "classic" period, akin to eighties Spider-Man. For Spidey, that was an era when no one creator dominated, but a continual string of them did one great story after another. Many of those same people took Superman to new heights in the late eighties and nineties (Marvel alumni John Byrne, Marv Wolfman, Roger Stern, Kerry Gammill, George Perez, plus some talent developed by DC itself, Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway).
But, around the death and return storyline, many of those greats had left the Superbooks, and those who remained (Mainly Jurgens) seemed ready for new challenges. New creators brought new energy to the titles, but their experiments with manga art never really seemed right after the beautifully traditional art of Perez, Ordway and Jurgens on Superman. So now, the books are trending back toward what made them great in the late eighties.
Still, this interim era had its moments, and RETURN TO KRYPTON was the best of the lot. The story didn't affect continuity quite as it promised to do, but it did provide for a nostalgic walk down memory lane. Plus, the book does return to comics a longime member of the Superman Family who had been away far, far too long....KRYPTO, the SUPERDOG!
Some of the plot elements here are similar to another SUPERMAN collection entitled GODFALL. The difference (besides explanations as to where these "Kryptonians" really are) is that this one plays more for nostalgia and old-fashioned fun, whereas GODFALL goes for a more dystopian, AKIRA-like feel. Both stand on their own merits. I prefer this one if I had to choose between the two.
Somewhat misleading title; not worthy of Superman.......2005-03-05
DON'T READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT THE STORY SPOILED!!
Initially, this story was kind of fun because you get to see Superman meet his biological father do a little father-son bonding (even though they're the same age in the story, so it's more like brother-brother bonding), but it gets old pretty quick. I bought this because I mistook it for the Mike Mignola/John Byrne story from the eighties in which Superman traveled to the remains of Krypton with Hawkman and Hawkwoman in an attempt to find a cure for kryptonite poisoning, and winds up having a "What if?"-type vision, exploring the potential outcome if the entire population of Krypton had fled to earth prior to its destruction. What I got was nothing near as good as that. Instead, it was "Lois and Clark vacation to a Matrix-esque, fictional version of Krypton," most of which, Clark had no powers, so it was hardly a 'Superman' story at all.
It was also kind of fun to read for a while as a sort of homage to the "traditional" Krypton of the pre-John Byrne-revamping of the Superman-mythos, but being the huge fan that I am of Byrne's re-imagining of Krypton, that also got a bit old.
All in all, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have bothered with "Return to Krypton."
Book Description
It's not easy for Superman to fight crime alone, so join him on his adventure to battle evil and save the day in this page-turning chapter book. The book is inspired by the movie with plot twists, conflicts, and thrilling adventures. Advanced readers will love the chapter format.

Anyone who has read her bestseller
Mama Makes Up Her Mind--or who has heard her on National Public Radio--knows that Bailey White is one of the keenest observers of Southern eccentricity since Mark Twain.
Sleeping at the Starlite Motel revives White's reputation as a master storyteller, Southern division, as it catalogs the oddities of the Georgia town she knows so well.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe you have to be Southern to Get this book.......2005-08-04
I bought this book because I was looking for light summer reading and the idea of short stories seemed like a great idea for a few days at the beach when you don't want to think too hard. I had heard great reviews when it was released a few years ago - and even my own mother recommended it. However, it left me a little unsatisfied during the read. Most of the stories were about somewhat off kilter southern folks and their quirky experiences. That would have been fine except some didn't even seem to have a point to the meandering stories. Some were engaging and moving, but for the most part I was disappointed.
A funny thing happened . . . .......2004-11-10
Bailey White's book of short stories/narratives that describe crazy relatives and neighbors, interesting experiences with folks traveling through, and the adventures of daily life is a great addition to any reader's collection of southern literature. I particularly loved "Computer Class," which tells the tale of two elementary school teachers who skip out on computer training to go to the dog races.
White has a tender way of writing about all of her "characters." She notes people's eccentricities, but she doesn't judge them or look down on them. In many ways, she seems to delight in all the "differences" that make people (and the world) interesting. A great read. If you like this book, you'll LOVE Mama Makes up Her Mind, which I thought was even better than this one.
not a huge waste of time.......2003-11-18
i couldn't decide between three and four stars. at first i wondered, "why am i reading this?" because the book is really kind of pointless. but some of the stories made me laugh. each story gives an interesting perspective and reminds you of the odd people and places you've known, so it wasn't entirely a waste of time. but i still couldn't figure out why the stories were really compiled together into one book--when i first picked it up i understood that the book was a compilation of stories and vignettes, but it also gives the impression that they are in some way linked by a common thread or something. but they're really not. in the end i'm glad i read it.
If it is written by bailey white -- read it!.......2002-07-02
I urge you to read anything you can that is written by Bailey White. I am currently sharing all three of her books, Mama makes up her mind, Sleeping at the Starlite Motel, and Quite a Year For Plums with my 70 year old mother and my 14 year old daughter. Her writing transcends generations. We read passages outloud to each other. From worms doing gymnastics from the ceilings to every possible strange character, her books are a delight.
Not as good as her first book, Mama Makes Up Her Mind........2000-12-18
I read this book because I truly enjoyed her previous work, Mama Makes Up Her Mind. But I was disappointed by this one. Several short stories seemed to have not much substance and not very funny altogether. I enjoyed less than half of all stories, ie. Red the Rat Man, Career Choices, Computer School, Horror Movies.
