Book Description

Admirers of the late, legendary art historian Meyer Schapiro will find this first publication of his own artwork a revelation. More than 200 paintings, drawings, and sculptures are reproduced; along with three never-published essays-"On Representing and Knowing," "Color as Expressive," and "Drawing from the Figure"-they yield a surprising private view of this Renaissance man who was a giant figure in American intellectual and artistic life from the 1930s until his death in 1996 at age 91.

Of special interest are Schapiro's self-portraits and renderings of such notable people as Bernard Berenson, Whittaker Chambers, and Irving Howe. An introduction by Schapiro's widow, Lillian Milgram Schapiro, gives insights into his early art education, and a preface by New York Times art critic John Russell provides a personal reminiscence of this inspirational figure in the art world who soared above the crowd as "one of nature's illuminants."

203 photographs, 53 in full color, 8 1/2 x 11"

MEYER SCHAPIRO (1904-1996) was associated with Columbia University from 1920, when he entered as an undergraduate, until his death. He was named University Professor Emeritus there in 1973. He also taught at New York University, Oxford University, and the Collge de France in Paris. His varied fields of interest included the art of the Middle Ages and of 19th- and 20th-century Europe and America.

LILLIAN MILGRAM SCHAPIRO is a retired pediatrician and former medical school clinical professor. She married Meyer Schapiro in 1928 and worked with him on various aspects of his publications. JOHN RUSSELL is former chief art critic of The New York Times and the author of many books, including Abrams' Matisse: Father & Son, London, and Paris. He lives in New York.

JOHN BIGELOW TAYLOR is a well-known photographer whose work has appeared in a number of Abrams books, including The Currency of Fame, The Cycladic Spirit, Daniel Brush: Gold Without Boundaries, The Splendor of Ethnic Jewelry, and Venetian Glass.

5 out of 5 stars Another creative side of the great art - historian .......2005-01-09

This volume lovingly collected by Meyer Schapiro's widow, Lilian Milgram Schapiro contains representations of over two- hundred of his own sketches, drawings and paintings. It also contains three previously unpublished essays on the history of art from the person who many considered to be the greatest all - around art historian of the twentieth century. The art- work including a number of portraits is interesting and impressive. Like another well- known art - historian who began as a painter Moshe Barasch the painting is prelude and accompaniment to the deeper and more important work as art- historian. But the volume does show another side of this multi- talented master interpreter of the visual arts. And it should certainly be in the library of all those for whom the study of Art History is dear.

    Book Description

When designer Liz Lange was thinking about getting pregnant for the first time, and watching her friends struggle with the available choices in maternity wear, she was shocked. With no shortage of baggy tops, gaudy bows, and pants with big panels, Liz was faced with the frustrating truth: “fashion” and “pregnancy” do not always make a compatible pair. Luckily for pregnant women all over, the result was Liz’s renowned collection of classic, comfortable maternity wear.

Now, Liz Lange’s Maternity Style presents all of Liz’s personal and professional insights for women who refuse to relinquish chic simply because they are expecting. In her direct, upbeat voice, Liz shows how to make the most of a “difficult, fashion-challenged time” without replacing your entire wardrobe. Celebrating the swelling belly so many maternity clothes attempt to camouflage, her tasteful approach shows pregnant women how to dress both to accentuate and to slim their changing bodies (including those pesky postpartum months spent working your way back into your favorite jeans).

Liz Lange’s Maternity Style provides advice on everything from color choice to accessories, casual Fridays to holiday parties, exercise or lounge wear to weekend staples—all building from a carefully selected wardrobe focused on mixing and matching, sensibility and style. Lively illustrations, fun celebrity photos, and great features, like must-have pieces and splurge vs. save items, all add up to a friendly, eminently useful, and fun-to-read guide.

A much-needed handbook for the roller coaster ride that is pregnancy, Liz Lange’s Maternity Style will help you keep your sense of style and self.

I was extremely disappointed with this book. I see pictures of clothes and do not know where to find them or if I can even afford them. I see celebrities who had tons of help to look good but no real women.

While the cover image of a glowingly pregnant woman wearing a dress and spike heels is a bit hard to believe, Pregnancy Chic will save the sanity of any woman who finds it hard enough to get dressed in the morning, let alone when her midriff is expanding. The authors, creators of the "Pregnancy Survival Kit," offer some ingenious advice for looking classy and keeping comfortable and cool (or staying warm, depending on the season and your hormonal swings). Here's how to wear your favorite pair of pants through your first trimester or two: "Keep a ponytail elastic in your pocket at all times. If things get tight, make a quick escape to the nearest bathroom (which you are probably quite familiar with already), and slip it on as an "extender." Loop the elastic around the button, pull the body of it through your buttonhole, and bring it back over to loop around the button again."

Other helpful tips abound on topics from accessorizing, shopping for maternity bras and shoes (try a size larger than usual), and dressing for work, special events, or just schlepping around town. Be warned, though, that women on a limited budget may not appreciate the preponderance of fancy-label clothing (contact numbers are given for Eileen Fisher, Joan Vass, Bloomies, and their ilk).

    Book Description

We began in 1994 as two pregnant fashion executives who knew there had to be a simple solution to the universal challenge of remaining well dressed while pregnant. We packaged it in a little white box and called it The Pregnancy Survival Kit--a simple four-piece wardrobe consisting of the essentials. And with it, we changed the world of fashion.
Now we've written Pregnancy Chic: The Fashion Survival Guide. In it, we explore ways to get dressed without compromising your style (why would you wear something you wouldn't normally wear, just because you're pregnant?). We've included hundreds of firsthand tips discovered through trial and error, such as increasing your pregnancy wardrobe by extending the life of your pants with a simple rubber band, or wearing your husband's walking shorts with his woven belt (no notches--fits anyone!). Haven't you got better things to do than spend an hour in front of your closet picking out what to wear? With chapters on how to dress for work, casual and formal events, and even travel, we make it easy and affordable to look chic.
From your first doctor's visit right through to post-baby, we'll show you how it's done. Enjoy, be comfortable, and have fun!  Jody & Cherie

3 out of 5 stars Expected better from the minds behind Belly Basics.......2007-01-26

The authors' [...], has some beautiful maternity clothes, so I believe their fashion savvy has continued to evolve in the 10 years since this book was written. Thank goodness! The advice in this book is pretty outdated--think Elaine's clothes in Seinfeld. The book present many laughably bad ideas (leggings as pants? leggings with loafers? wearing your husband's shorts?) as maternity musts. I kept reading it and hooting "I would rather die!" If your non-maternity style is schlumpy, you don't need help maintaining it throughout your pregnancy; if your style is at all classic, tailored, fitted, trendy or sexy, their advice is not for you. The best way to dress your pregnant body is to find the maternity versions of what you wore before. (Duh.) For great maternity style, check out designers like Isabella Oliver, then find cheaper versions of those clothes at Target, the Gap, Old Navy, etc. But do splurge on something to make yourself feel beautiful, as well.

3 out of 5 stars I didn't like this book much, but I gave it 3 stars because:.......2000-04-11

    1. The authors acknowledged that not all women can wear the "Survival Kit" products to work - some women work in environments where cotton/lycra stretch fabric doesn't cut it. I thought this was very honest of the authors.

    2. THANK GOD they pointed out that overalls are a bad idea for anyone over 5'7" Not that I think they are such a great idea for anyone under 5'7", but I guess you have to start somewhere! And, of course, I guess it depends upon your age and where you live as well.

    On the other hand...

    1. Patterned hose are a bad idea on anyone, much less a pregnant woman.

    2. Ditto blue shoes with a black outfit.

Overall, I thought the book was very unambitious. Instead of containing hard to follow advice from exacting New York City fashion sophisticates (i.e. a standard to strive for), it mostly contained advice on how to stretch a wardrobe (i.e. use stuff you already own). If you can't figure out how to do that on your own, you should buy this book. But I think most women would do just as well without it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fashion Advice.......2000-01-13

I bought this book for a friend of mine who, when telling me about her wonderful "I'm Pregnant!" news, she followed up with a quick, "Help! I need fashion advice. I don't want to be in sailor dresses for 9 months!" Before giving her this book, I read it and LOVED IT! For those of us who are NOT pregnant, but actually looking forward to it someday, but who are also turned off by the maternity clothes we have seen, this is a true find. As the authors say, why wear something when you are pregnant that you wouldn't ever wear when you are NOT pregnant! I think that it's time for pregnant women to feel GOOD and BEAUTIFUL while they are pregnant and to even be sexy when they want to! Stop hiding under baggy, oversized clothing and be proud! This books gives you great tips on how to be fashionable while your body seems out of control.

2 out of 5 stars please spare me!.......2000-01-06

If you can dress yourself pre-pregnancy, You don't need this book. Any fashion magazine or maternity catalog will help you pick out your own clothes pregnant or not.

3 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining, but ..........1999-09-17

I found this book well-written, entertaining, and informative, but HELLO Cherie and Jody, NOT EVERY WOMAN IS A SIZE FOUR OR SIX!!! However, it is possible to get past that and use their advice as a starting point, especially if you work in a field where you must maintain a professional, pulled-together image.

5 out of 5 stars Could put maternity stores out of business.......2001-02-07

This book is well worth the money. It contains a lot of creative tips with many entertaining illustrations so that you may not ever have to buy a "maternity wardrobe", even if you work in an office.

The author is a model, and I would say that many of the ideas look best on a tall person, but even so, there are ideas for some clothing items to make that anyone could use, pregnant or not. This would be a really good book for someone losing weight and being "in between" wardrobes as well, as she has some good ideas for thrift store finds, and making do with what you already have.

Some reviewers say the fashion ideas are dated, but hey, if disco can come back, anything can. None of her fashion ideas are dated, in my opinion--different people can carry off different outfits. You don't have to use a satin sheet, there are lots of nice fabrics to choose from to make the pouf dress. This book is worth buying, simply for the creative ideas. Not everybody can get by at work in oversized jeans.

1 out of 5 stars Not at all practical or up-to-date.......1999-03-14

This book was a big disappointment to me. The "styles" weren't styles at all! I can't imagine a model wearing any of this stuff, or any woman that I know. All of the wrapping and tying and tucking here and there would never stay put if you moved at all, and I don't consider wearing my husband's clothes chic. Save your money and buy an inexpensive pair of maternity jeans!

3 out of 5 stars Some good creative ideas, but styles are outdated.......1999-01-03

The styles in this book are definitely from the 80s, so much of it doesn't work today. But there are good ideas which can be translated to today's wardrobe.

2 out of 5 stars Cheerful but out-of-date.......1998-11-15

Though Ms. Sutherland's tone is upbeat and engaging, her fashion advice is at best dated, and at worst ridiculous. Would you really want to sew a satin sheet into a huge, square, evening dress?! Or wear an oversized men's suit with suspenders, tucking the too-long legs into white socks? Unless the oversized Annie-Hall look is for you, better pass this one up.

                Book Description

Dark Horse delivers another fantastic collection of rare classics from a comics legend! Russ Manning, famous for his spectacular work on the Tarzan newspaper strips of the late sixties, brought fans his "Tarzan of the future" in Magnus, Robot Fighter. While his work on the original comic series lasted only twenty-one issues, Manning's creation has survived generations, influencing countless science-fiction artists and writers to this day. Fans of Alex Raymond, Mac Raboy, or Wally Wood should not miss this beautifully bound hardcover, the second Magnus archival collection and the latest addition to Dark Horse's line of science-fiction classics.

                4 out of 5 stars Still a print problem.......2005-09-07

The first volume had printing issues, and so does this one. Not as bad, or am I just used to it now? Still worth it, but I hope Book 3's quality is better.
