Book Description

Tyrus Miller breaks new ground in this study of early twentieth-century literary and artistic culture. Whereas modernism studies have generally concentrated on the vital early phases of the modernist revolt, Miller focuses on the turbulent later years of the 1920s and 1930s, tracking the dissolution of modernism in the interwar years.
In the post-World War I reconstruction and the worldwide crisis that followed, Miller argues, new technological media and the social forces of mass politics opened fault lines in individual and collective experience, undermining the cultural bases of the modernist movement. He shows how late modernists attempted to discover ways of occupying this new and often dangerous cultural space. In doing so they laid bare the ruin of the modernist aesthetic at the same time as they transcended its limits.
In his wide-ranging theoretical and historical discussion, Miller relates developments in literary culture to tendencies in the visual arts, cultural and political criticism, mass culture, and social history. He excavates Wyndham Lewis's hidden borrowings from Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer; situates Djuna Barnes between the imagery of haute couture and the intellectualism of Duchamp; uncovers Beckett's affinities with Giacometti's surrealist sculptures and the Bolshevik clowns Bim-Bom; and considers Mina Loy as both visionary writer and designer of decorative lampshades. Miller's lively and engaging readings of culture in this turbulent period reveal its surprising anticipation of our own postmodernity.

2 out of 5 stars trouble to digest this book.......2000-09-19

This book, very puzzling. I read last night on way back from very excellent smorgasborg dinner at friend house. He make extra fine meatloaf with bread and also butter. I never so full. In all my life, I say, and very happy too. So then what? I read book. So depressing, you see. Mr. Tyrus Miller, he crack open modernism like rotten coconut and pour out spoiled milk for all to see. Now I am so sick and in pain, surely I die soon.

5 out of 5 stars a better book than first meets the eye.......2000-02-18

I was first drawn to this book while waiting for my paramour outside of a popular but nameless Manhattan bookstore. She was late, as always, and to kill the time I skimmed the remainder bins, where some untutored storeclerk had remorselessly dumped several copies of Miller's "Late Modernism." Was it the light winter breeze against my exposed neck, or Miller's icy analytical touch, as he claws his way through the work of Barnes, Joyce, and Brothers that produced that uncanny frisson of feeling I felt as I turned from page to page? Who can say. Clearly Miller has fulfilled the wish of Eliot's Prufrock, and we as readers feel compelled, altogether willingly, to scuttle silently across the pages of "Late Modernism." Reviewers on the book's jacket had promised readers a "crabbed journey through the unnoticed grottoes of late modernism, and at the same time, a forward walking approach to literary theory." Miller delivers. As Miller suggests, form and content can be conceived against the legendary late modernist binary of the shell and the inside, and with Miller's unrelenting hermenuetic in hand, we as readers become the recipients of the most succulent morsels of this most crustaceous period in Western literature. Miller casts his nets wide, revealing the fallacy of the classic distinction between the figurative and the littoral, which in recent criticism of this period has become something of a red herring. In the end, we recognize as readers what Miller has apparently known all along: that the crabs of modernism outnumber those of any cheap hotel.

4 out of 5 stars Sh*t Sandwich: a good comic effort.......1999-06-13

After "The Rants" and "Ranting Again", Miller really delivers here. If you liked his work on Saturday Night Live, you will really enjoy this work, which should've been titled "Late Night Modernism." I didn't know whether to laugh or take out a note pad. Miller's parody of academic idiom reproduces the real thing so closely that it might fool a tenured mind. His comparision of Beckett with Giacommetti was a hoot, but bringing in Bim and Bom went too far- that is my only gripe. Fans of Miller might have expected in this context a kind of "Surrealist Weekend Update." But the knotted and loopy references of his stand up routine have been translated well into pseudo-academic style, including footnotes. His pidgin academic is a veritable laugh griot.

3 out of 5 stars Basic and not so fabulous.......2007-01-10

Unfortunately, the patterns make boxy garments without much shaping. While errors, as noted by an earlier reviewer, are problems, omissions make the book deficient, and a novice would have difficulty. The book offers interesting ideas, but I found making adjustments to the instructions was the only way to get good results.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-08-08

This book is full of great patterns for Barbie. It also really made me laugh. I am not a Barbie collector or enthusiest. I just got it to knit my daughter some pretty Barbie clothes. Each outfit has a description for it as if it were a very exspensive designer piece being bought out of a catalog. I read the whole book as a work of fiction and as a good pattern book.

4 out of 5 stars Knit versus crochet........2006-08-06

I prefer the Crochet For Barbie book. Keep mindful that Barbie bodies thru the years do require slight attire fit-adjustments. Still, pattern errors in this Knit book caused me to wonder if Nicky's book success (she is Barbie's authorized needlecraft fashion maker) caused publr/mfr to seek quick profits without testing their knit-to-crochet pattern translation software. Admittedly, the fashions are all great and it is nice to finish a chic project in an eye-blink. Needlecrafters will appreciate Crochet/Knit For Barbie books patterns working up pro-style, also quickly teaching beginners cro-knit skills for human attire and accys. Experienced needlecrafters' detail modifications can result in gorgeous outfit variations. Learning your yarn-usage with their common needle sizes makes catching errors nearly automatic (mine is .5"/k and .25"/sc for sport yarn and cotton no. 5 respectively).

5 out of 5 stars Little girls will want you to make everything in this book.......2006-01-22

Sweaters, afghans, swimsuits, rugs, even a dog sweater. Nicky Epstein gives you a pattern for nearly anything you might want to knit for a Barbie. Well photographed pictures are followed by clear instructions for creating the items. Some of the recommended yarns are rather exotic, but an experienced knitter may be able to substitute from yarns left over from other projects. This would be a good book to have on hand if you are a knitting Mom, Grandma or doting Auntie.

Kubert's graphics and Kanigher's stories continue to be compelling. This second volume is a collection of stories published during the late 60's and early 70's as Vietnam became an ongoing point of contention. Kanigher's story lines manage to be both compelling as to the times and yet maintain their basis in WW1 reality. The Enemy Ace series, as originally produced, wisely refused to politicize and in that alone made a strong humanistic statement. The Hammer of Hell flies on with all his personal demons and in the end, both he and the war itself are interwoven, intriguing protagonists.

                Book Description

ENEMY ACE ARCHIVES VOL. 1 collects the earliest tales of Hans von Hammer, the greatest fighter pilot of World War I. Utilizing superb characterization, these elegantly crafted stories offer an intriguing and rare look at war by presenting it through the eyes of "the enemy." Although a German soldier, Enemy Ace must still struggle with the agony of survival and the senseless deaths of young men. This book shows that war is not simply good guys versus bad guys but instead human versus human.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars A long-needed collection of one of Kubert's finest hours........2005-01-28

I used to go over the local spinner racks with a fine-toothed comb as a child, looking for appearances by Hans von Hammer, and, looking back at the material reprinted in this beauiful hardback from an adult vantage point, it was worth all the effort. These stories are peak efforts from an artist who's had a lot of peaks (Hawkman, Tor, Sergeant Rock, and Tarzan come to mind as equivalent achievements), and the art ranks with Tarzan as Kubert's finest graphic achievement. Occasionally, Kanigher's stories get slightly "comic booky" (For example, with the use of slightly "super-villainesque" adversaries, like the Hangman), but the sheer quality and earnestness of the writing, and the powerfully melancholy mood of the art will carry you right over this. It's almost impossible to convey today how different the brooding von Hammer was from any other comic character at the time. It was as though an Edgar Allan Poe protagonist (Roderick Usher, for example) had taken up combat flying. I eagerly await Volume 2, which should be just the right page count to contain all the remaining ENEMY ACE material.
Incidentally, regarding the reviewer who thinks that the "origional" issues are still "cheeper" that the Archives hardcover; No, they're not. DC's classic war comics from the 50's and 60's are very difficult to find in decent condition: Kubert's material in particular has skyrocketed in price. You couldn't even get the first issue of SHOWCASE reprinted here for the price of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting beginning to a unique character.......2003-01-31

This volume, along with "The Sgt. Rock Archives", reprints excellent work by the team of Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. What is particularly astounding about both volumes is that each contain a level of maturity and depth not found in the DC Comics super-hero line at that time (which is not to say those stories are without value). While it is not quite as sophisticated as the stories being told in comics today, both Rock and Enemy Ace tell riveting and complex stories in the war milleu. Enemy Ace is particularly daring, telling the story of a WWI German pilot, and bringing a great sense of moral ambiguity to the procedings.

The key attraction of the Enemy Ace is the depth of Hans von Hammer. He's a skilled fighter and killer, without equal, and so, he is a loner. But above all else, he is a man of duty: to his fatherland, to his men, and to himself. His trophies mean nothing, the opinions of his commrades in arms mean nothing. Only his duty. It's this sense of duty that allows us to sympathize with this otherwise enigmatic soldier, whose only friend is a wolf in the Black Forest.

There are many touches which help bring the character to life. The almost chivalric code that pilots live by, with the loser falling to his death while saluting the victor, for example, bring the war into focus. As does the violence. Now, this isn't "Saving Private Ryan" of course, but Kubert and Kanigher do make it plain that the life of a pilot is nasty, brutish, and short, even for a good one. Hammer live under a very real threat of death everytime he takes to the skies. And Hammer knows this, making him that much more human.

What is particularly interesting about this volume is there is a certain level of repetition. Kanigher was clearly taking his time and finding his way in developing his character, trying to make him work. Thus, we often read variations of the same dialog and themes for much of the volume. Towards the end, Kanigher seems to have gotten hold of the character, as there is a great deal of confidence, and the repetition deminishes. I note this not as a complaint, but with intrigue.

Hopefully, DC will continue publishing volumes of Enemy Ace. While I love the "Big Gun" character, some lesser characters, like the Enemy Ace, offer great storytelling as well, if not better in some cases. This volume is a testiment to that fact.

4 out of 5 stars The first of its kind........2002-12-21

Enemy Ace was the first character of its kind in comics. Telling the story of a war from the point of view of the foe. However that statment is kind of overplayed as usually the German Hans von Hammer was fighting the French or British. In this volume you will not see him against any American.

The idea of one who's main focus is duty is a powerful one. Von Hammer is a character that can't one can't help but respect. the stories are fine and the art is first rate.

We see only the first glimpse of what later issues will bring on the agony of survival and the inability to protect the young unready men thrown against the foe.

The origional issues are still cheep enough the you can get them for less than the price of this book, however I still favor the Hardcover which will last a lifetime of reading.

And that's what stories are for.

                5 out of 5 stars Oh jeez.......2005-06-29

These books written by the two LaPlante sisters are cute and make you feel hopeful. I don't believe this book is blasphemous as previous reviewer stated. It's not meant as a text book, and certainly not "witchcraft". Please, it's 2005, we don't burn books which you don't agree with and we don't call people witches and blasphemers anymore. Lighten up, it's meant to be a "feel good" book of hopeful ideas.

5 out of 5 stars fun to read.......2004-10-10

I have enjoyed this book immensely. It gives some history about different saints that people have historically prayed to for help with love issues. It then gives some prayers and rituals that can be tried, many of which come from the middle ages and are pretty hysterical. It is lighthearted in the way it is written and yet not disrespectful of the saints it covers.

1 out of 5 stars A Book of Witchcraft Masquerading as a Catholic Book.......2003-12-25

If you are a believing Orthodox Christian, Catholic or otherwise, this book is NOT for you. This book takes spells, incantations, and dresses them up as "quaint" folk stories hoping ignorant people will ensnare themselves in its blasphamy. It will bring you only curses for using it, as the Bible says in Gal 5:20-21 "those who practice such things (sorcery, witchcraft) will not inherit the kingdom of God"
