Book Description
At first glance, the artist and the scientist don't seem to have very much in common. One deals with aesthetics, emotions, and visual power, while the other works with facts, verifiable proof, and academic rigor. At another level, however, we find similarities: both artists and scientists work in the realms of imagination, of asking what is possible, of experimentation. One of the ways that these similarities find their expression is in the workplace: the artist's studio and the scientist's laboratory. Laboratorium explores the laboratory and the studio on the basis of their various concepts within different disciplines. Drawings from distinct yet interrelated domains, the book singles out complex scientific and artistic investigations into the limits and possibilities of the places where knowledge and culture are made. Published on the occasion of an exhibition in Antwerp, it presents, in a volume designed by Bruce Mau, the experiments, laboratories, and projects initiated by participants from various fields in the arts and sciences. In addition, there are several essays and interviews that trace the intellectual implications of the workplace and process of investigations.

Book Description
Since World War I, the Natuurkundig Laboratorium has been a crucial center of industrial research for Philips, one of the world’s largest electronics companies. In this study, Marc J. de Vries demonstrates how the history of the laboratory can help us understand important changes in the production and uses of technology in the twentieth century.
Breaking their study into three periods, each characterized by different research goals and approaches, the authors augment this general history with detailed case studies. The result will be of value to anyone studying the history and philosophy of technology.

Customer Reviews:
Some cute projects.......2004-08-19
The beauty of this book is its tiny size and quickness of projects. The first few pages are dedicated to a quick review of knitting, and then the fun begins. Most of the items featured are long-sleeve sweaters, and I feel that there's a sweater for everyone here: they have cable work, hoods, stripes, color work, one even has Fair Isle. A few sweaters are clearly for girls, but most are unisex. Instructions are given for sizes 4-10. Some patterns other than sweaters include ones for mittens, a mini bag, a hat and a poncho.
Book Description
Keep the child you love warm and cozy, with more than 20 completely irresistible hand-knit pieces for toddlers. The wide variety of adorable outfits include jackets, caps, cardigans, pullovers, dresses, jumpers, sweatshirts, swimsuits, and more, including some by top designers. All the garments are quick to knit, and the patterns include color photographs, instructions, and charts. These clothes will be passed on lovingly from generation to generation.

Great Kids Sweaters.......2000-05-13
This series is great for it's size and portability! This volume includes many different styles and yarn types, and of course it's a great way to use up yarn leftovers. There are delicate lace cardigans, a couple of romper patterns, and fair isle designs. The fair isle are especially nice, since there are at least 3 of them, and they call for differing weights of yarn. There is even a pattern for a knit panda bear which I'm dying to try out! There are also excellent directions and charts, and I would recommend this book for knitters with any level of expertise.

Just wonderful!.......2006-08-13
Searching the net for dogs in cartoons and comics, I stumbled on Fergus and Mel - and fell in love with them immediately. So I rushed to Amazon and bought the 3 "Citizen Dog" available books, and boy -- what a joy!
Fergus and company do entertain, with clever writing and appealing characters. Mel *is* dog's best friend; he and pal Fergus always are having fun together, like two children in a toy store. At the same time, they have their fights with each other. All in all, it always make you smile.
And although being a dog person, I cannot help from saying that Cuddles (AKA Claws, the culturally ambiguous cat) has become one of my favorite comic characters ever. Maybe because he is a little bit naive, and not so egoistical and mean like cats use to be... (sorry for that!). I also like Arlo and Bruno.
Forgot Snoopy and Garfield, folks; it's "Citizen Dog" time now. Way to go, Mark O'Hare!
Vive les Weenies!.......2004-04-14
How can you not love a dog that drives, speaks French, and makes a mean macaroni and cheese? Once again, Fergus and his human Mel engage in a battle of wits and will. Naturally, Fergus comes out on top. (Don't blame Mel though -- he's only human.) This volume is actually my favorite of the three, mainly because it contains a sequence of strips en Francais. It's truly classic. (I think I still have the original newspaper strips somewhere.) There's also a good bit about Cuddles the Cat exploring his inner tomcat, leather jacket and all. All in all, I say buy this book and Vive les Weenies!
One of the best comic strips ever!.......2004-03-26
The "Citizen Dog" comic strip was one of the best ever. Mark O'Hare has a delightfully wicked sense of humor and he brings such life and animation to his characters. You don't have to be a dog lover to appreciate Fergus, the smart-mouthed dog in this series ... or the lovable antics of his owner, Mel. Get a taste for the comic strip at: http://www.ucomics.com/citizendog/.
Unfortunately, Mark O'Hare is no longer creating new Citizen Dog strips, so all we have left is these fabulous books. There are three in the series:
1) Citizen Dog: The First Collection [ISBN: 0836251865]
2) Dog's Best Friend: More Citizen Dog Reflections [ISBN: 0836267516]
3) D is for Dog [ISBN: 0740704575]
Buy two of each ... because someone's gonna want your copy!
Happy reading!
Another winner!.......1999-12-26
Funnier than the first book? I found it hard to believe, but it's absolutely true! And while these books hold a special place for pet owners, everyone can relate to the humourous insights on everyday life.
Tons of great classic strips at a great price.......1999-08-29
Citizen Dog is one of THE best comic strip of the 90's. It's clever, witty, and downright funny. A great book.

Our Pummeled Kids.......2006-05-30
Our world is ravaged by conflict and our kids are bombarded with stress. Parents are completely frazzled. Dr. Franzini's book is a wonderful antidote to all the stress because it addresses those quiet, marvelous moments we all share with the children in our lives--moments when you catch your breath and think, wow, surely there is hope for this tattered world after all. Humor serves as our deep connection to each other and if we can instill the ability to appreciate humor in our kids, we certainly must. This book will help everyone!
Humor - A Learned Behavior.......2002-07-21
This book has information anybody can use. Even if your children are grown or you've retired from teaching. You probably have nephews, nieces, grand kids or neighbor kids.
Incidentally, it's never too late to learn.
This is an interesting, easy to read, informative book. Positive and full of good ideas. It dispels for once and for all the myth that some of us are born with a sense of humor and some are not. The author shows that this is not true. Everybody, especially kids, can learn to develop, and use, their sense of humor. Great examples and practices as well as interesting websites are chronicled. Exceptional children are also taken into consideration. As the author says, "exceptional kids like to laugh too." Don't we all.
Finally.......2002-05-01
Finally a parenting book that deals with teaching children a skill that will be all-important in any future relationship. It also teaches how to discourage inappropriate humor in a positive manner.
This book would be a wonderful guideline for teachers who want to incorporate humor in the classroom. And as teachers are role models for children this is an excellent place to develop this skill.
Kids Who Laugh is written in an easy and witty style and it is apparent that Dr. Franzini has an excellent sense of humor himself.
I would recommend this book to every parent who thinks that laughter in life is important.
Very Worthwhile.......2002-04-18
Kids Who Laugh is a very informative, enjoyable and worthwhile book. I believe that one of the most important gifts I can give to my children is the gift of a sense of humor. Dr. Franzini, with his insightful text and helpful techniques, helps a parent achieve this goal. Dr. Franzini makes a convincing argument that a sense of humor is a learned trait and, after reading this book, I agree. Even if you already have a well developed sense of humor, this book helps you transfer that trait to your children.
Book Description
Little Blue Book No. 475. The author sets out to give advice about the development of the appreciation of humor. A sense of humor is individual, first of all, but it is social as well. It is hoped that this little booklet will have the power to turn out trained laughers.
Customer Reviews:
Complete waste of money and time.......2005-09-08
I was aghast when I received this "book". It is nothing more than a poorly copied term paper written by a college student, copied on a machine and pasted together into a pamphlet. The words were all blurred as though they had been forwarded to the publisher by Fax through three different machines before finally arriving there. The content is silly and completely useless. The only reason I didn't return it to Amazon instead of throwing it in the trash (which I did) was because of the cost of mailing it back.
Threw it away already.......2005-04-15
Not what I expected. Reprint of dated article and not a great article to begin with. Amazon needs to flag this book before others buy it. Not a book..a dated article that will not make anyone humorous or leave em laughing.
don't bother.......2004-03-13
There is nothing how-to about this book in the least. It is really a history of humor:
"Thackeray tell us that humor is 'wit an love,' and Anne Evans declares that is 'thinking in fun while we feel in earnest.'
"Surely Dryden did not suppose that the almighty mob would be corrected by his verses, but perhaps he expected to convert a few individuals from too great a trust in the wisdom of majorities. It is certain that a clever satire is often more effective than a logical argument."
"The word 'sarcasm' has a suggestive etymology. In ancient Greek, 'sarkos' meant flesh, and 'sarkadzein' came to mean tear flesh, like dogs, or to speak so bitterly as to suggest the tearing of flesh."
I didn't cherry-pick these quotes - the whole book is like that. It's interesting, just not what I thought I was buying.
