These have been a lot of fun to try out. while the book is small (portable ;) this has been worth it. my friends and I have had tons of fun with this.
Size.......2007-04-26
I was under the impression that the book was bigger. I received the book, and was suprised to see that it was so small. I guess I didn't read the specs. This book would be good to throw in your pocket or purse to go to a party.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for Mac DIYs (do-it-yourselfers)!.......2004-02-07
I've been using a spare iBook as a webserver for about 8 months now and decided to turn it into an email server as well. In just a few pages, this book explained exactly how to do it with Sendmail.
Unfortunately however, Panther ships with Postfix preinstalled (and from what I've read Postfix is a better alternative to Sendmail) so obviously the steps for configuring Postfix weren't included in the book. I emailed the author (who thoughtfully provides his email address in the book for help related questions) asking for instructions to configure Postfix, and within hours he emailed me concise details of how to configure Postfix with a shareware program called Postfix Enabler.
Just a short while later my iBook was not only an HTTP web server, but a POP/IMAP email server too. I had no idea it would be so easy, and there's 49 other wonderful techniques that are simple to follow: everything from using the command line with Terminal to installing PHP and MySQL and so much more.
The front of the book does say, "Covers Jaguar!", but I've been using it with Panther and the only trouble I had was with the Postfix issue. It's one of the most helpful OS X books I've ever read.
Excellent book to help one get the most out of Mac OSX.......2003-10-21
This is a wonderful book for all us souls who use OSX. The techniques are almost always a way to either solve a particular problem or learn a particular tool. I have only gone through about 30 of them, but each one has made my life either a little easier or a lot. A couple of examples are that I know understand how to best utilize the Finder and am no longer intimidated by Terminal. The style is breezy and very easy to understand without being condescending or dumbed-down. Strongly recommended
The Kissell magic for 50 Fast MAC OS X Techniques.......2003-09-09
Joe Kissell writes for both the techie and we "normal" folk. His teaching of UNIX basics leaves you with knowledge, not boredom, and is worth the price of the book by itself. Most of the improvements he describes for both OS X and MAC are useful, and in some cases just plain fun, to any MAC user, and his ability to explain his techniques to the reader is an absolute pleasure. Can't wait for his OS 10.3 version.
Best technical book in many years.......2003-08-23
This is really a rare book. Not stupid-funny, and so knowledgeable and pedagogic. I had bought my new iMac, the first since my Mac+ nearly 20 years ago. It looked like a modern Mac, and worked as such. Then I got Joe Kissel's book! And discovered all the stuff underneath. The holy grail of UNIX. And how smart the engineers at Apple still are! I was amazed by how many intelligent goodies they have put into the box. And really enjoyed the profound know-how of Joe Kissell, and his many step-by-step guided tours into the heart of the iMac. I learnt to install a firewall- and that I already had a firewall in my box. I was taught GIMP, and file sharing, and all about the iApp's. Backing up, booting and so on. Apache-in-the-box too. Thank you VERY much, Joe!
Customer Reviews:
US MAP.......2005-09-19
I was looking simply for a good sized, detailed map of the just United States, so we could "map" out places we've been, and places we'd like to see. All the other maps I saw were either too involved, meaning it had things in addition to the states, too small, or too expensive for a simple plan. I found this map that I purchased perfect for what I had in mind.

American X-Vehicles.......2006-06-17
As one of the authors of this publication it seems some clarification is in order. This book was originally published by NASA headquarters for an X-Planes symposium in 2001 and was updated and reprinted by NASA again in 2003 as part of the Centennial of Flight celebrations.
It was designed from the beginning to simply provide an overview of the history of the U.S. built X-Vehicles. It was never intended to be an in-depth study of the their history. The original printing of this book is of good quality with nice reproductions and is still available through NASA Headquarters Public Affairs Office in Washington DC.
The version being sold here is a reproduction of that book. Therefore the quality of the printing has gone down quite a bit since they simply copied one of the available books and did not use the original digital files for reproduction.
If you're looking for a simple overview of the X-Planes then get a copy from NASA HQ. If you are looking for the in-depth history of the X-Planes then you should definitely purchase a copy of Jay Miller's X-Plane's book.
Major Disappointment.......2006-06-05
Given the authors of this book, Dennis Jenkins, Tony Landis and Jay Miller, you would think that it would be a well-done (albeit brief) summary of the various vehicles of the X-plane programs. Instead, it just barely scratches the surface of the programs listed, the X-1 through the X-50, the non-X lifting bodies (HL-10 and M2-F1) and the two D-558 variants. If you know nothing about these aircraft, this might be a good place to start, but you can find much better information online. The book is more of an executive overview than a "An Inventory".
The above is bad enough, but to add insult to injury, the the production quality of the book is also very poor. The pages have a very cheap feel (almost like newsprint). Worst of all, the photos and illustrations - all black and white - range from fair to very poor, with many digital artifacts visible and almost universal low contrast. As an example, the photograph of the X-43 is so bad that if you did not have some idea of what it is supposed to look like, you could not tell exactly what the object in the photograph is.
The book is not worth the money unless, perhaps, you can find it at 90% off.

Book Description
Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike. In 2015, the "Angels" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo-commander of the secret organization NERV-to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called "Evangelion" to match the Angels' fearsome power. As a carrier fleet steams towards Japan carrying a mysterious embryonic form linked to the true origins of the human race, a hurricane is about to blow down Shinji's momentary peace: the wind through the red hair of Asuka Langley Soryu, the new Eva pilot arriving in Tokyo-3...One of the founding members of Gainax, Japan's most progressive anime studio, Evangelion's Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was also the character designer for their recent Adult Swim smash FLCL. EVA Vol. 4 contains a Japanese sound FX glossary plus a special bonus interview with the voice of Asuka, Battle Royale's Yuko Miyamura!
Customer Reviews:
A Comparison Between the Two........2004-08-15
A question frequently asked by those familiar with Evangelion is whether the manga is better, or the anime. I've bought 2, 3, 4, and 8 of the manga, and read a considerable amount of those I don't own. I've also watched the entire anime series several times, as well as the two movies. With most animes, most people swear to either the animated series or the manga, but in this case, i completely recommend both.
The differences are HUGE, which is why I think its important to point them out. The anime is directed and written entirely by Hideaki Anno, who came up with the idea of Evagelion. Yoshiuki Sadamoto was also a key developer, but he is credited for only charater design in the anime. The manga is his retelling the sotry in his own way.
Anno and Sadamoto obviously have very different personalities, as seen in their works. Anno has a very somber style and in the anime, there is always tension due to human complexes. The presentation is more metaphorical and atmospheric, and uses sounds as well as visuals to relay unseen messages. More time is spent discussing the techinicals of the sciences, while Sadamoto quickly glosses over such explanations so he can get back to character development. Evangelion the animated series has religious overtures that have a deep link between events and the characters, but Sadamoto seems to just ignore that altogether. Fans of manga might find the complexity of the anime too moody, although it's highly sucessful as a psychological action anime.
Sadamoto, on the other hand, spends almost every page of the manga on character development. He inserts humor and gags, and gives the characters somewhat more generic personalities. Generic might even be considered preferable in this case, as many people complain about how subdued or bratty the characters were in the anime. As an artist, he uses body position to express things the anime never did. The storyline is pretty much reconstructed in a way that readers will say "cool!" where viewers of the anime would analyze for implications. Those who want a fun story should read the manga, and those who want to think should buy the anime.
I did both.
An Excellent Manga.......2001-09-05
I just had to write a review for this particular manga book, because it has my favorite character in it: Asuka. I know a lot of people don't like her, but i just love her character. And I must say that i was impressed with how well she came out in the manga. I'm a huge fan of the anime, but the manga goes even more in depth itno the characters and the workings of the world. Sadamoto's view of Evangelion is just as good, if not better in some respects, than the anime. Being able to see the character's thoughts helps a lot in understanding them, and I think that Sadamoto did an excellent job in showing the emotional depths of all the characters. I'll definetly be buying the rest of the manga as it comes out.
Great Manga for Excellent Anime.......2001-06-12
This book was a great read. I am a huge fan of the anime so I naturally would love this. But I would reccommend this to anyone. It is a truly wonderful anime. But anyway, this manga is great. The only thing that I find strange with this book is that the events that happen between Asuka and Shinji are VERY different. Same thing with how Asuka kills the Angel in the ocean. It happens much differently in the anime. But nevertheless, still a great book.
The best between Science, action, and comedy.......2001-01-17
Neon Genesis Evangelion continues to be the premire anime manga for the science geeks. Along with the amazing drawing and mecha design, the story remains top-notch and introduces elements not seen in the series.
GREATEST MANGA EVER!.......2000-12-26
I must say that Neon Genesis Evangelion is absolutely the best manga ever! I was completely amazed mainly by the personality the characters had you could actually feal their feelings they where like real people. The art was also extremeley well done the plot was kind of generic but the interaction between the characters covered that up. I used to think Moble Suit Gundam Wing was the best anime and manga but I have found something much better it is the perfect mix of action and fighting on an extaordanary level that no one will ever experiance and the problems of everyday life such as the main character says quote "I hate him. So much that I wonder why he's my father. but... I don't really want to hate him." Now how many people have felt those emotions when you where a teenager? I bet alot especial if you father or parents always seemed disopointed with everything you did no matter how hard you tried, and that's why I would recomend it to any science fiction or anime fan. It's becouse of as I said before the perfect merging of these elements that make it a perfect buy.

This best-selling Manga version of Japan's most controversial anime series is now available for the first time in a special collector's edition that preserves the original right-to-left orientation of the artwork.
Customer Reviews:
What's the big deal?.......2004-07-31
There is very little changed from the TV series in this manga. As far as right to left, who cares. The artwork is hard to figure out in many of the mecha scenes. Stick with the DVDs.
A gift from God to mankind.......2003-12-19
This is the greatest literary work existing. When I read it the first time I was overjoyed by the mere existence of something as wonderful as this book. The plot is wonderful, so are the characters (you'll love Asuka, Shinji, and all the others!). There is only one good reason for not buying this book, and that is not having read the earlier volumes. Buy them, and the buy this. I can promise you you'll be glad you did. Noone could dislike this book.
quiet relationships.......2002-05-15
Vol. 3 is one of my fav simply because of how the story is and what ahppenes. Here ur left to wonder of many but still feel satisfied. The conversations are informative and as always the art is perfect. there is also some comody and some quite controvesial scenes u might wanna check out. :D
Good book.......2002-05-01
Evangelion Vol. 1, by Yoshiyuki is the first book in the series. This book is based on a popular Japanese cartoon, Evangelion. This book covers the first episode and parts of the second.
This book takes place in Japan in the year 2015, 15 years after the first ?Angel? self-destructs taking Antarctica and half the human race with it. The enemies are known as ?Angels?. In this, another Angel attacks, and the only people who can stop them are a couple of 14 year-olds in their gigantic robots called Evangelions.
I enjoyed reading it because it is in manga (comic book) form. I first read it when my friend loaned it to me, but shortly after, I bought the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone because I thought it was great. The author did an awesome job writing this book. I can?t wait till the rest of the series comes out.
Customer Reviews:
Outland Volume Two.......2004-06-18
After years of creating the wildly popular and successful 'toon "Bloom County" Berke Breathed scaled back the strip to a Sunday-only offering called "Outland". During the same time he was beginning his work on his wonderfully written and illustrated children's books.
In Bloom County we were offered characters that grew familiar, even in their various deficiencies. The strips were episodic, frequently thoughtful and almost always hilarious. At the same time we came to identify with the various characters: Milo Bloom the precocious pre-teen and his paranoid buddy Binkley. Cutter John, the paraplegic Vietnam veteran who led his buddies on role-playing Star Trek adventures. Steve Dallas, the chain-smoking slime-ball lawyer who got his come-uppance over and over, usually as a result of his insensitivity to women. Oliver Wendell Jones, the young computer hacker who caused panic at the Pentagon, on Wall Street and in his school's science class.
Outland doesn't have the same feel as it's not episodic at all. Each Sunday comic "stands alone" - and each one is full of Breathed's inventive artwork and the same brilliantly conceived satire. I don't feel like the story stands still long enough to identify or care as much about the characters, and for that reason Outland isn't as satisfying to me as Bloom County.
Still - there is some good stuff here and Breathed skewers Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, the health-care industry, political correctness and Macauley Culkin.
