I found the explinations rather vague.... the book doesn't really explain too well the form in which you have to draw, its good at teaching technique materials requires and stuff, but if you don't already know how to draw its a little hard to learn how to draw good anime from it. I didn't get much from this book... it doesn't give much explination in the actualy WAY you need to draw the head and body. And it gave absolutley no teaching on how to draw the eyes... which is an essential part of the anime style drawing, maybe its to get you to buy the other books??

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!!.......2004-02-27

If you're interested in learning the art of cartooning and maybe even making some money along the way, this book should be one of the first you pick up! It covers how to draw funny cartoon characters, how to develop your own style and characters, how to get funny ideas, how to sketch and ink your cartoons, where and how to sketch and ink your cartoons, where and how to sell your cartoons, and some extra stuff--everything you could need to know! In addition, this book is filled with gag cartoons and strips from some of the most prolific cartoonists in the business. Take my advice: If you're going to by books on cartooning, the Randy Glasbergen books are some of the best! Highly recommend.

    5 out of 5 stars A Cartoonist's Cartoonist.......2003-01-19

This is an easy to read, compact (117 page) mini-course for anyone considering a career in cartooning. Illustrated throughout by Randy Glasbergen's unique cartoon style, this book first shows how to draw funny cartoon characters, then launches into the kinds of skills needed to compete in today's competitive environment: how to develop your own characters and style; how to create clever cartoon ideas; how to sketch and ink your drawings; and how and where to sell your finished cartoons.

Interspersed are 8 "Cartoonist Profiles". In each Randy introduces the reader to a successful working professional. Tom Cheney is but one example. Thousands of his cartoons have appeared in the New Yorker, National Lampoon, Cosmopolitan, Woman's World, the Wall Street Journal, and 400 other publications worldwide. Another example is "Revilo," whose real name is Oliver Christianson. Oliver spent many years creating cards for the Hallmark greeting card company. Each of these "profiled cartoonists" supplies the reader with his or her own sound advice.

Every so often Randy gives a "homework" assignment, a challenging lesson to help the reader to practice what he has been learning. Afterall, if you are going to "draw and sell" cartoons, you will need to actually apply your ideas, your pencil, and your pen to paper.

Who better to write a book on "Getting Started Drawing and Selling Cartoons" than someone like Randy, who is one of the most widely and frequently published cartoonists in America today, and has drawn "The Better Half" comic panel since 1982?

The back cover concludes with these words: "With this book, you'll learn the ins and outs you need to succeed in this fun-filled -- and lucrative -- market." Very well expressed!

But even if you never sell a cartoon anywhere in your life, this
book will give you a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at this excellent profession.

I have had some experience in this field. I have sold hundreds of cartoon ideas and cartoons over the years, and I recommend Randy Glasbergen's "Drawing and Selling Cartoons" very highly.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonderful.......2000-05-22

I'd been looking for this kind of think forever and I finally found it for 5 bucks at the mall complex near the city where I vacation often. It has to be the best book I've ever owned.

In his new life as an aquatic bird, Ginji manages to escape from the zoo and become Minako's pet. While he'd rather be his old human self, there are surprising perks to being a penguin — especially when Minako doesn't mind bathing or changing clothes right in front of him. In other developments, Ginji tries to help restore glory to his beloved old gymnasium, now virtually abandoned. But what resources does a penguin have?

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE COOLEST MANGA EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-23

Alright, so I've been reading manga for a while now, and of course you get some great stuff in this genre, and of course you get some stereotypes. This is flat out, the greatest manga of all time. I've finished the first three, and can't wait for the next one. Alright, I'm a 27 year old male, so don't think it's a kiddie thing... but this book just rocks. It's got some really heartfelt romance (some a la sappy manga style-- so what???) and it's got great action... and it contains THE most laugh-out-loud hilariously funny sequences ever. I would feel almost embarrased to read it in public because it makes me laugh so much... And, hell, it's about a boxing penguin who is the reincarnation of a guy who just fell in love with a girl at first sight... only to be snatched away before they even had their first date. That part kinda reminds me of Meet Joe Black.... Ahh, but I ramble. If you like any of the following: penguins, romantic elements that aren't too girly and sappy (but I'm sure they'd appreciate it too), Straight up AWESOME and original humor, if you want something different in your stereotypical manga or stereotypical life, if you ever wanted to see Rocky remade as a Penguin.... GO OUT NOW AND BUY THIS!!!!!! you will love it... I can read this book over and over... I can read it once and then pick it up and read it all over again, And feel completely immersed in the beauty and genius of Gin-Chan!!!!!

                    5 out of 5 stars Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-09-04

I loved Tuxedo Gin. I mean it was funny about the whole reborn as a penguin. I liked it and I read it over and over again. I think anyone will enjoy this manga! My rating A+++++++++++.

5 out of 5 stars Great little magna for penguin lovers.......2004-03-08

Like the Seattle reviewer, I also only bought the book because I am a big penguin fan. The book starts off slows, and it is awkward as a westerner to read it right-to-left style, but it is worth it. The subtle comedy and the nifty drama makes it a can't-put-down book. Seeing a penguin try martial art moves, or the varios sprinkling of penguin trivia, just makes it the perfect magna for penguin lovers.

A must have if you love penguins.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most.......2003-12-31

This manga is surprisingly good, containing a good mix of comedy and romance.

                    Graphic: 5/5, Crisp and Clean
Storyline: 4.5/5, Excellent mix of Comedy and Romance - I suppose it's heartfelt if you're a male
Characters: 4.5/5, a bit static at time and each has simple motives, but the motives help in each storyline and you gain a better feel about the characters with each story.

Overall: 4.9/5 - One of my top ten favorite mangas.

5 out of 5 stars extremely underestimated manga.......2003-10-31

so... viz is FINALLY coming out with a whole line of new titles? Interesting... Basically, this was my first and only thought when I found this out. And when I saw that the new manga line up consisted of a 'girl-meets-penguin?' romance, I thought it was simply the most ridiculous thing ever. Out of all the good manga that has yet to be published... they bring something like this?

However, like aways, looks can be deceiving. I read a sample chapter from the viz manga sampler book and was immediately sucked into the storyline. Tuxedo Gin is surprisingly really, really good! Yeah, it looks lame. That's what I thought too, but this book is pretty darn funny and interesting. Trust me. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Good quotes, but not comprehensive.......2004-11-18

I added many (80+) quotations to my collection from this book, however, as per the title, it is not comprehensive. It's worth reading since (per page 197, quoting Benjamin Disraeli) "The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotation." Some of the quotes are well known (e.g. by Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, or George Bernard Shaw) but quite a few are not. Many are funny--better than a TV sitcom. Some of my favorites are:
                    p. 68: Blessed are the young for they shall inherit the national debt. Herbert Hoover.
                    p. 79b: If all economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion. George Bernard Shaw
                    p. 89b: If your outgo exceeds your income, your upkeep will be your downfall.
                    p. 154b: Misers aren't fun to live with, but they make wonderful ancestors. David Brenner
                    p. 165a: The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers. Thomas Jefferson
                    p. 172: Parents were invented to make children happy by giving them something to ignore. Ogden Nash
                    p. 173: Everything comes to he who hustles while he waits. Thomas A. Edison
                    p. 194: It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first. Ronald Reagan
                    p. 196: The objection to Puritans is not that they try to make us think as they do, but that they try to make us do as they think. H. L. Mencken
                    p. 202: The man who is always worrying whether or not his soul would be damned generally has a soul that isn't worth a damn. Oliver Wendell Holmes
                    p. 212: One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man. Elbert Hubbard
                    p. 228: He uses statistics as a drunken man use lampposts-for support rather than for illumination. Andrew Lang
                    p. 244: If everybody thought before they spoke, the silence would be deafening. Gerald Barzan

3 out of 5 stars Worth the price paid but not very comprehensive........1998-10-07

The quotes are very well organized but not as thorough as expected. A good quick reference guide but if you are in need of quotes on a regular basis this one isn't as complete as expected.

4 out of 5 stars Highly useful and thought provoking.......1998-06-27

Good content. Able to find useful quotations for presentations. In addition I really enjoyed browsing for pleasure and a few good laughs.

                      Book Description

Don't Quote Me, But is about tradition. It is about attitudes, mores, beliefs, behavior and pitfalls of society as seen through the eyes of Essdale Wilson. It is revealing humorous, thought provocing and leaves nothing to the imagination. There are no sacred cows, no pussy footing,no avoidance of delicate topics. You may disagree, express anger, develop topics further. You may lay the book down but you will return to it time and again as it stimulates your thinking while providing chuckles and insight.
