      Book Description

This Companion is the most comprehensive treatment of ancient Greek rhetoric available. Designed primarily for readers approaching the subject for the first time, it traces the history of rhetoric from Homer to Byzantium. It provides an overview of rhetorical theory and practice, offers accounts of the most important orators and rhetoricians, and considers rhetoric in a number of historical, social, political, intellectual, and literary contexts. The Companion comprises a series of newly commissioned essays by experts in the field. These contributions cover traditional topics such as rhetoric's place within politics, law, and philosophy, as well as wider-ranging subjects such as rhetoric's relationship to knowledge, ethics, logic, and emotion. The volume incorporates new material providing fresh insights into how the Greeks saw and used rhetoric, and into its far-reaching effects on ancient Greek society. An introductory chapter discusses the idea of rhetoric, the status of rhetoric studies (present and future), and summarises the various chapters of the volume.

Richter's A Handbook of Greek Art is the reference work for anyone with a notion to understand and appreciate the rich diversity of ancient Greece. Dr. Gisela Richter, for many years the curator of Greek and Roman art for the Metropolitan Museum in New York, has created a work of unsurpassed excellence, covering Greek architecture and sculpture, metalwork and terra-cotta statuettes, engraved gems, coins, jewelry, and paintings, plus mosaics, pottery, vases, furniture, textiles, and glass. The pages are full of knowledgeable, engrossing, beautifully written explanatory text, illustrated by hundreds of black-and-white photos, with notes telling at which site or in which museum each item may be seen. Invaluable for students and teachers, it's also an inspirational text for museumgoers and travelers planning a Greek vacation. --Stephanie Gold

      5 out of 5 stars Reference Fantastique!.......2000-05-18

Unbelievable, no one has reveiwed this text! I first used it in a Classical Studies course in highschool, but found it so helpful as a resource and quick reference that I was furious when someone walked off with it. Well written, nicely laid out, many illustrations, scholarly~ an all around brilliant book to have on your shelf especially as an introduction to the world of Greek Art. In particular, the delineation of seperate Periods, and the highlighting of specific artists make this a gem. Autodidacts~ this is a must!

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Overview of Ancient Greek Coinage.......2004-12-06

I agree with other reviewers that this book is an excellent introduction to ancient Greek coins collecting.

What I also liked about this book is:

1)The list of major issuing cities with brief but interesting comments regarding the cities' history (e.g. the dramatic events such as the destruction of Messana by Carthaginians)

        2) The list of the rulers of major Hellenistic dynasties (reading about these people's lives and seeing their faces on coins is really impressive)

        3) Masterpieces of Greek Art section featuring 25 beautiful coins which are among the author's favourites (I personally liked about 20 of those).

One of the things you learn from this book is that you don't actually have to OWN these beautiful coins to ENJOY them. All it takes is willingness to spend your time and energy to explore these treasures from the past.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful introduction to ancient Greek Coin collecting.......2003-08-13

Having collected ancient coins for decades, I must confess to a real fondness for the Sayles books, and for this one in particular. It is beautifuly illustrated, as well as informative, and makes the reader truly want to own the coins which Sayles discusses. One thing which makes this better for new collectors than some other books, is that Sayles isn't touting ancient coins as an investment. They are NOT a sound investment for the average collector, who can expect a 30% or higher LOSS when reselling the coins which most average collectors can afford to buy -- beautiful as they are, the typical coins which the average collector can afford are NOT going to shoot through the roof in value, even if they are extremely rare or unique. The market strength and bullish demand isn't present to allow the average collector to profit from most of his or her coins. What makes the Sayles book appealing is its inspiration for readers to COLLECT these coins and treasure them, as they have been treasured for thousands of years, and YES, it is thrilling indeed to buy a coin of which only two or three other specimens are known in the world, and -- YES! -- it is possible to own coins which are absolutely unique. Thanks to generations of dedicated collectors, it is even possible to buy -- for small sums -- coins which have established provenances dating back a century or more. My own collection includes coins once owned by President John Quincy Adams and by J. P. Morgan, but they each cost less than some best-selling potboiler novels which will be forgotten by next season. Read Sayles and begin to dream!!!

4 out of 5 stars As a beginner resource, great!.......2002-09-05

Sayles' prose has a way of bringing alive some great coins. It is a great way for a beginner to become both more interested in the hobby as well as developing the principle of purchasing books in field of study rather than buying every forgery and fake on the market. The biggest drawback is that you really need Volume I as an introduction to the series and collecting, then pick up the other volumes as your interests expand. It took me about two years to get all six volumes. They're worth it at a reasonable price, but no substitute for other standard reference works. You can also loan them out to friends to get them interested.

        5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Book!.......2001-01-21

In roughly 200 pages that are divided into 6 chapters and 4 appendixes with copious illustrations and brief bibliographies throughout - this book is beautifully jammed with coins and information. Following the example of the first volume, this book is in plain language and is easy on the eyes in it's print, format, tables and charts.

The bulk of this book deals with differing coin types from differing geographical areas and and the artistry of the larger series. This really does a new collector a big favor because the new collector gets to purview a plethora of coin types from throughout that series and it may go a long wat to help them decide what they would like to collect. What is really important about this book is the focus on the coiner or "celator" and what he did and the role he played as artist and the chapter on "Masterpieces of Greek Art" is a beautiful read by itself with large B&W illustrations of some of the most aesthetically pleasing coins in the series.

The great strength of this book is that it is equally beautiful and useful and the author obviously loves what he is writing about rather than giving a very dry, scholarly and perfunctory survey. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for the coin enthusiast.......1998-04-04

If you are as fascinated with ancients as I am, you MUST have this book. You will love how easy it is to read and you will constantly refer back to it.

5 out of 5 stars informative overview of ancient Greek art.......2004-12-16

This is great as a nice introductory survey of artwork, some myth, and some history of ancient Greece. Carpenter divides the book into chapters and sections according to important characters (heroes, Olympian gods) and events (Trojan War and its aftermath). In each, he provides a good overview, brings in historical and contextual information to provide narratives to the relevant artworks he provides at the end of the section (which is rather inconvenient to have to keep flipping the pages if you don't know what he's referring to). Themes, characterization, attributes, trajectories etc etc can all found in this book which is quite compact for the amount of information it provides.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic introduction.......2000-05-15

A good undergraduate source of the visual images that are one survival form of the classical myths. Basic information about ancient art gives the reader just enough knowledge to understand technically why certain traits appear, such as the different "color" of males and females. Packed with pictures, it is an excellent source for both classical studies and art history at the undergraduate level.

          Book Description

This book completes John Boardman's study of Greek vase painting in the World of Art. The author demonstrates that all the components of Greek art that were to culminate in the Classical styles of the fifth century can be traced in the development of vase painting in early Greece, from the eleventh to the sixth centuries B.C. The vases are the most prolific source for this study, as well as being invaluable documents of society, religion, trade, and colonization. The works discussed here display the Greek painter's craft at its most mathematical, its most colorful, and in its most directly narrative mode. The later achievements of Greek art can only be fully understood in light of this formative period of variety, competition, and experiment.

5 out of 5 stars early greek vases.......2002-07-19

John Boardmans' series of books on Greek vases are a rare treat for the general public. Early Greek Vase Painting investigates and unravels the early history of Greek vases. Boardman begins ,naturally, with the Attic geometric style and procedes to show us how it was the basis for all later Greek vase painting .He traces the developement to narrative representation, while discussing stylistic influences and regional differences.Individual artists are recognized for their contributions and personal quirks . There are many (511)photographs and a small but usefull chart .Pictures are extremely well chosen to illustrate the authors text .Boardman casts a new light on the dawn of Greek vases - a remarkable work !

5 out of 5 stars Essential Greek Art Book.......2000-10-31

This book by John Boardman covers an essential period in Greek Art. The Black Figure style takes place from about 580-500 BC, though it is overlapped by Attic Red Figure about 530 BC. This book gives you the names, dates and vases of more than 50 Attic Black figure artists. John Boardman knows his material, and it shows, he gives a full array of differing views about the authorship of some vases showing that his opinion may not be the only opinion. I really learned a lot from this book, and truly recommend it to any Art or Classics student, as well as the person looking for general knowledge. A Good Buy!

5 out of 5 stars Encounters with the Yagyu Grass for Lone Wolf & Cub.......2002-11-30

"Brothers of the Grass," Volume 15 in the "Lone Wolf and Cub" manga epic by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, finally offers up the episode I have been awaiting for sometime, namely one in which the title characters do not appear. The story, of course, does serve the purpose of introducing us (eventually) to a character who will provide one of the greatest challenges to Ogami Itto as he and Diagoro walk the Assassin's Road together. Meanwhile, the importance of the Yagyu Letter continues to motivate the actions of Yagyu Retsudo, even more so than his desire to see Ogami Itto dead, which is itself something of a clue. However, Koike and Kojima are obviously in no hurry to reveal all. We must continue to read these stories in patience, understanding that with this volume we have passed the halfway mark in the saga:

              (73) "The Castle of Women" offers up another interesting test for Ogami Itto to face before being hired for a task. Sixteen men walk the roads wearing the mark of Gozumezu, each carrying 100 ryo and the next part of the story behind the job their lord wants Lone Wolf to do. The story is indeed worth the hearing, but this is but a complex opening gambit in a much larger game.

              (74) "The Women of Sodeshi" finds Lone Wolf and Cub visiting a fishing village where there are only women, brought there by a tragic song. Yet even this distant, strange little village has its secrets.

              (75) "Brothers of the Grass" tells the story of two brothers who have been planted in deep cover by the Yagyu. One of them, Getsugyoku, whose particular talents and peculiar nature would be suited to bringing down Lone Wolf, has disappeared, and the Yagyu force the one brother to track down the other.

              (76) "Five Wheels of the Yagyu" is the showpiece story in this volume as Getsugyoku uses the five wheels of the Yagyu grass: joy, anger, sorrow, pleasure, and fear to try to kill Ogami Itto, retrieve the Yagyu letter, get back his human face. A very different type of "duel," than we are use to seeing in these stories, which only serves to make it all the more memorable.

              (77) "Incense of the Living" introduces us to yet another fascinating type of shadow warriors, the Yama-Shu, one of the Shogun's special detachments. At the age of 42 they have a "living funeral," say farewell to their family and friends, and are buried alive, only to be dug up and given a new name as a member of the Shibito-Metsuke (Ghost Inspectors). After this ritual we find these warriors have been given the task of finding a secret gold mine. Of course, you know who has been hired to defend the mine.

This is one of the most thematic volumes in the "Lone Wolf and Cub" series, with four of the five stories devoted to the Grass, the deep-cover ninjas of the Yagyu. The ability of Koike and Kojima to enrich their epic with virtually every story is really astounding. The period detail is fascinating, but it is the grand scope of the overall story, as well as its individual chapters, that makes this one of the greatest comic books in the history of the entire world. Very few Western comic books were coming up with stories this good when they got to their seventh year (unless they already had a major dry spell and had a new team take over the book).

5 out of 5 stars Another comic masterpiece.......2002-04-25

Another batch of chapters of the finest comic saga from Japan that I can remember.

After 30+ years of collecting comics there are only three current titles that I still collect. GROO (the joke is still funny after all these years) Usagi Yojimbo (a classic series of stories with a bit a humor as well.) and Lone Wolf and cub. (I know these are reprints but the issues since 13 were never published in English so as far as I'm concerned it is new.)

More interesting that the stories themselves (and they are plenty interesting) is the look at the psyche of Nippon. Brothers of the grass is a great example. By any modern stardard the "grass" have an unstable obsession, however duty overrides all, but can even these great warriors in hiding for years overcome the Lone Wolf and his quest for revenge? 5 out of 5 stars Amazing series........2002-02-05

Ogami Itto's endless trek of destruction continues in number 15.
By now followers of the series have gone beyond the visceral thrill of Ogami's martial prowess, and have absorbed the shocking horror of what Lone Wolf's destiny really is. A truly masterful graphic novel.

5 out of 5 stars Purrfect And Inspireable For Cat Lovers Of All Ages!.......1998-04-08

"Good Mousekeeping©" is absolutly purrfect for any one interested in cats. Ilene Hochberg is a creativly talented lady and deserves lots of recognition for this book. It includes a purrspective as we think of cats, and the way we think they may look at certain situations. You will find this book close to that of Good Housekeeping©. It even includes a clever section called "At Home With Mouser Stewart". I'm looking forward to reading Vanity Fur and Catmopolitan, also by Ilene Hochberg. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do! Don't Forget... Cats are smarter than we take them for, therefore, it could be said that we are, in a cat's eyes, very unintelligent for thinking cats aren't as intelligent as they really are!
