Book Description

Dark Horse Comics is proud to be reprinting this American Book Award winner, Flood!, a powerful graphic novel by the socially and politically conscious illustrator Eric Drooker, frequent cover artist for the New Yorker and contributor to World War III Illustrated. Flood! is a modern novel written in the ancient language of pictures, and its expressionist graphics hold a film noir edge. Long out of print and now at its tenth anniversary, Flood! conveys all the joys and sadness that intermingle in our large cities and gives us a look at a possible future. This edition features a new introduction by historian and poet Luc Sante, a new cover by Drooker, and a complete re-design. This reprint of Flood! will coincide with the release of Drooker's follow-up graphic novel, Blood Song: A Silent Ballad, from Harcourt Brace.

4 out of 5 stars When Nature Takes Over.......2006-02-10

Andy Flynn is eleven years old and lives in Vancouver with his mom and stepfather. His parents got a divorce when he was young, and was told that his father died as a war hero. After a flood occurs, Andy is left alone; he lost his mom, friends, and stepfather. Soon Andy is taking back to Halifax, his birthplace, to live with his aunt Mona whom he has never met. When with her, a secret about his family will change his life forever.
I thought Flood was a well-rounded book. It had its good and bad parts. One thing I liked about it was that you do not know what happens with Andy's life until the last chapter. This makes you want to keep reading. I did not like the fact that it took so long to get into the story. It was not as eye catching in the beginning as I thought it would be. As the story progressed, it began to become more interesting.
I think that if you like suspense, you will like this book. It is good for an everyday easy read. I think that either girls or guys could read this. It never got really excinting, but it always kept you thinking, "what will happen next"?

5 out of 5 stars Surviving the Flood.......2005-09-02

When you first encounter Drooker's story-scape, each precious moment of recognition and association collapses the space that holds you outside the book reading, until you are dropped deeper even into your own world, and marveling at all that is around you. Here, the reader is invited to witness and participate in the appropriations of meaning that constitute the individual's identity in a vast and elusive society. The solitary protagonists in Drooker's stories are journeyers and drifters, transgressing a fluid mythotropic environment that pulses with historical memory and a rich cultural symbology. Drooker's world is pervaded with a deep and compelling mystery. The mystery is in the eclectic progression of images that flash across the page, a fragmented and kaleidescopic depiction of a hybrid instance of collective culture. This is evocative of that strange cross-breeding of cultures, which we see in our cities. Drooker sees within this a kind of hope, which emerges out from behind the distinctively apocalyptic mood and stage of the work. The culture is mined for knowledge that will bestow meaning upon the seeker, fostering a vital and visionary experience. The creative and imaginative integrity that the characters find in the midst of stifling urban anonymity and alienation are a type of personal redemption that brings celestial satisfaction within reach, like an instruction manual for surviving the destruction of the great flood.

5 out of 5 stars So much meaning in so few words........2003-02-25

The visual metaphors in this book
are skillful and moving,
as well as very witty at times.
I laughed, I... well I didn't really CRY,
but I did get sniffly. ;)
An engaging commentary on life.

Note: If you don't really look at the pictures,
you won't get anything out of it.
Some of this work is very subtle.

First, this "novel" appears to contain two unrelated stories. "Flood" is the shorter of the two. I like a lot of Drooker's work, but as a piece of narrative this just didn't hold me for very long.

In both pieces very little action occurs-- most of the longer story involves the protagonist walking from one place to another. Most of "Flood" involves the protagonist ignoring an increasing level of water.

In addition, character development is almost absent.

        5 out of 5 stars A great X-Files book to accompany your X-Files Collection!.......2001-07-18

Trust No One is a complex book that provides insight to any reader about one of the best shows, if not THE best, on television, The X-Files. This book is adorned with many facts and pictures that reveal an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes information that is helpful to a serious fan. I have gathered from it many details that I have put into my own episode guide. I highly recommend this if you are a die-hard X-Phile. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The book was interesting to read but the pictures were dull........1998-04-18

The book was great to read and the third season of X-Files was exciting. However, the pictures were stupid and all should have been in color.Whoever had the idea of printing those pictures in a dark black and white should think again.Next time when they begin making the 5th season guide book they should print nice, clear, bright pictures along with the episode synopsises.

4 out of 5 stars This was a pretty good book.......1997-12-14

Since i am blind, i had my sister read it to me. i thought it to be pretty intresting and my sister described the pictures to me and i thought they were cool. i can't wait for the next season book to come out.

        2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......1997-02-05

I really enjoyed the first book, THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, which covered the first two seasons of the X-Files. But this book only covers one season and the authors Lowry and Stegall want you to dish out another $15. Even the color photos have been seen a gillion times before in other magazines. Don't waste your money on such a blatant attempt by Rupert Murdoch's publishing company to milk this cow for all its worth. I usually enjoy Sarah Stegall's online reviews, but I can't believe she would be involved in such crass commercialism as this book. Shame on her, shame on the publisher, and shame on me for buying this crap

5 out of 5 stars Sequel to X-Files Guide is better than any available!.......1997-01-14

Wow! This X-Files guide is just as good, and even better, than its preceding guide. The third season guide to The X-Files showcases as many facts and background information from the show and its stars as the first guide by Brian Lowry. You'll be amazed to read how the third season cliffhanger, Talitha Cumi, was written and produced as you are taken step-by-step through both post- and pre-production. This novel provides behind-the-scenes interviews with the stars--both off-screen and on--of this glorious cult drama. Once again Brian Lowry does a superb job of composing descriptive episode summaries, and now even adds a cool color-photo insert taken from the set of the seasons best episodes. A deffinate gotta-have-it for fans, The Official Third Season Guide to the X-Files proves both fascinating and entertaining time after time to read

In a worthy companion to volume one, Jane Goldman delivers even more of the real-world inspirations for the most popular episodes of The X-Files. Goldman delves into reports of lake monsters, vampires, and of course, alien abduction and conspiracy theories. The one limitation of The X-Files Book of the Unexplained series is the broad scope, which limits Goldman's exploration to appetizing glimpses of the stranger side of life. However, she offers ample bibliographic references for readers who want to sink their teeth into the main course. --Brian Patterson

          Book Description

From Lands End to Los Angeles, The X-Files is indisputably the hottest show on television.

And while the show is a compelling fictional drama, it is enthralling to consider that the majority of episodes have been inspired by real-life phenomena, legends, conspiracies and urban-mythology.

Whether you're an open-minded Mulder-type or a pragmatic Scully, The X-Files: Book of the Unexplained, invites you to don your trench-coat and explore this extraordinary and thrilling world of ours, in search of the truth.

The X-Files: Book of the Unexplained is an in-depth guide to the mysteries of the paranormal and unexplained which are the basis of the fictional television episodes. It covers every aspect of the strange including UFO sightings, landings, alien encounters, government cover ups, psychic crime solving, faith healing, spontaneous combustion, feral humans, freaks of nature, ghosts and hauntings, reincarnation, a parade of thoroughly modern threats and much, much more.

Each chapter is sparked off by the phenomena contained in The X-Files and features stills from the show, interviews with The X-Files cast and creative team, and astonishing revelations from the world's leading investigators, scientists and officials. The X-Files Book: of the Unexplained, an X-Files guide to the unknown, is a book no X-Files fan or inquisitive reader can afford to miss.

5 out of 5 stars So much better than volume one........2003-04-10

I have both volume one and now volume two- thanks to used book sellers. This book contains "explainations" for some of the best in my opinion episodes. "HUMBUG", "FIREWALKER", "3" - that was the episode that had one of david duchovny's at the time's girlfriend playing a vampire, "War of the coprophages"- heh heh Dr. Bambi, "hell money", "clyde bruckman's Final repose"- the psychic epiisode-one of my all time favorites. Msybe the book was great because it had great episodes in it... or maybe it was great because it seemed to be written better than the first book. The chapters are clearly laid out into catagories: Life outside the mortal form, human enigmas, weird world, ancient beliefs, 20th century threats and paranoias, a cosmic conundrum, investigating the unexplained. It's a well written book- as i've said before. the research goldman did for this book is excellent. it is similar to the first book with quotes from the various episodes... but in my opinion is more interesting than the first one. Maybe it's because goldman had choosen some great episodes to write about. Definately get this book for your x-files collection. I'm glad that i did.

5 out of 5 stars exciting, entertaining, and informative.......2001-08-01

Most people think that everything in the X-files is completely fictional, this simply isn't true. There are real life roots for the stories weaved by X-files writers, and this book chronicles all kinds of useful, entertaining, and interesting examples of these facts. Are aliens manipulating our government? is mind control possible? what lies at the bottom of loch ness? Only this book will give you the facts you need to make a conclusion. I use it as a great rescource material.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on the Paranormal!.......2001-02-10

Anyone interested in the Paranormal will enjoy this book. X-File Fans will especially enjoy this book. See where some of the ideas from the show really came from. Very easy to read and understand with colorful illustrations. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars How to spend a day or two.......2000-10-29

A great book. You can see there's been some thorough research conducted for this book. It was an absolute pleasure reading this book. Being the avid science and X-files fan I am, it was interesting to see XF to be presented in the light of "real" science. Really a must read for any XF or science fan.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever.......1999-10-04

I have only read volume two, but I have to say it was one of the best books EVER! I am 13 years old and I read this book for school. When I did my presentation on it, i thought everybody would be bored, but at the end, my friends were begging me to read more. It had so much fascinating information in it. I highly reccomend that everyone on earth should read this book!

if your an avid fan of the x files this is for you. it gives you the chance to have some all new adventures with your pals mulder and scully. althout this is definately a plus, sometime the art and writing can be a little boring even sub-par. but as a huge xfiles fan im glad i have it in my collection. there are 4 or 5 short stories in this one.. most consisting of the usual xfiles material.

3 out of 5 stars I'd rather see it on TV.......2005-12-14

I assume that everybody knows what kind of TV-series the X-Files is, and thus I skip the description and go straight to the review instead, that is, the second collection about Mulder and Scully published by Checker Publishing Group. This time it's issues 20-26, issue 1/2 and X-Files Comic Digest Issue 1 that have been collected.

And the end result is more or less what I had expected it to be: as with Volume 1, Volume 2 is something that the hardcore-fans and comic buffs will appreciate while the everyday reader might not think too much of it. It's very true that everybody involved are very skilled; the authors know how to create a genuine X-Files style story, and the artists are all veterans and highly professional. However, the problem remains the same: Mulder's and Scully's adventures, when on paper, are lightyears from what they are when on the TV-screen. All the things that made the TV-series special; the lights, the creepy music, the camera work, and more; all these ingredients disappear when the adventures are done on paper, and the result is therefore not very surprisingly a comic that is neither good nor bad.

Some of the episodes have a LOT of text, and this is thus not a comic that you'll read in an instant. The paranormal phenomena under investigation are all quite "traditional", that is, ball lightning, ghosts, Bigfoot, and so on, and if you thought that the mysteries were "solved" surprisingly quickly in the TV-series, then you won't think much different when reading Volume 2. Here Mulder and Scully "solve" everything in the blink of an eye, and it's actually quite annoying and not very believable to see how all the pieces of the puzzle seem to come together more or less right after they've arrived at the scene of the crime.

The X-Files Volume 2 wasn't a complete disappointment, though. From time to time it's quite entertaining, and it's always interesting to see how "traditional" paranormal phenomena can be approached in new and innovative ways. However, after finishing it I felt just as I did after finishing Volume 1, that is, if I want to hang out with agents Mulder and Scully I much rather do it using a TV instead of a comic.
