I really enjoy his style of drawing. The step by step approach is perfect for this left brain person who is trying to learn how to draw landscapes. I was very pleased with the outcome of my pictures after following the steps. Also encourage you to look at Janet Wittle's Draw & Sketch Landscapes - sketch & draw with confidence in 6 steps or less. Both of these are great step by step books.

Ronald Swanwick's aim is to inspire the artist to go out and use a pencil at least as often as a brush. He shares his approach to drawing landscapes—teaching how to observe and soak up the atmosphere of a landscape, and opens the book with sections on composition, perspective and making marks and tones. Also, he clearly explains his language of drawing, in which there are only four methods of making marks—dots, lines, squiggles and washes. The mark you make and the tonal value you ascribe to it are used to describe the texture of a surface. Putting together these marks and tones allows you to build up a drawing to look like anything you wish. Drawing Landscapes has further sections on dealing with sunshine and shadows, drawing from photographs, drawing skies, trees and water and how to incorporate people and animals into a scene. Having accomplished these techniques, the reader can practise by doing one of two step-by-step projects.

Swanwick's Methods Are Laughable.......2002-06-16
"Draw what you see not what you think you see" is the phrase Ronald Swanwick uses when teaching. Unfortunately this flat and relatively dull book goes against that completely. Throughout the book he teaches people how to draw to his particular style - rather than introducing them to the concept of art.
The pages are filled with extremely bland pictures which quite frankly could have been drawn by a 2 year old for all the difference it makes.
He doesn't use a wide range of colours in the few colour pictures he does. In fact if any of his pictures ever are in colour, beginner artists will be shocked to "learn" that clouds do not have colour in them. They are either white or in very rare cases grey. Overall this is a very poorly written and presented book which has been written by a very bad artist and quite frankly you would be better off spending your money on a book which lets you decide how you want to draw pictures yourself.

One of the Best Series I've Ever Read .......2007-04-02
This is the 3rd issue in what I think to be one of the best manga series I've ever read. For anyone looking for non stop action, fan service or Lolita fantasies this is likely not for you. The stories are great and the characters are well developed. I am also glad that the deadbeat publisher ADV has finally announced it's release of the 4th issue in June, because after so many months I have grown tired of waiting.

This series is quite impressive and if the story and art doesn't impress you then there is something wrong with you. (Unless you're anti anime) But even non anime fans can be drawn into the series. Also, it's a good break from the shonen and magical girl anime types. I highly recommend it.
HIS NOSE IS GROWING.......2005-06-25
One of the Social Welfare Agency's agents has gone missing while on the trail of a mysterious new threat. I know it doesn't sound frightening, but the name of this threat is....Pinocchio! No, he's not the wooden puppet but seriously, his skills as a cold-blooded killer make him a match even for the Agency's cybernetically enhanced girls. He's been enlisted to help the terrorist forces of the Five Republics in their efforts to rebel against the government. The girls are sent into action against these forces and in an effort to protect an important political leader.
While action is never far away in Gunslinger Girl, since Volume 2 this series has taken a more quiet and less bloody route in its storytelling. This is a good thing. Here we get a focus on the forces that plot against the Agency and all sides of the conflict seem to get an even break in terms of motivation. It's very hard to see it in terms of bad guys and good guys (or gals). Since both sides are willing to do atrocious things to better their causes. Buy it for the action, the intrigue, and the poignant relationships. Highly recommended!
