Book Description
Written by one of this country's foremost urban historians, Downtown is the first history of what was once viewed as the heart of the American city. It tells the fascinating story of how downtown--and the way Americans thought about downtown-- changed over time. By showing how businessmen and property owners worked to promote the well-being of downtown, even at the expense of other parts of the city, it also gives a riveting account of spatial politics in urban America. Drawing on a wide array of contemporary sources, Robert M. Fogelson brings downtown to life, first as the business district, then as the central business district, and finally as just another business district. His book vividly recreates the long-forgotten battles over subways and skyscrapers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. And it provides a fresh, often startling perspective on elevated highways, parking bans, urban redevelopment, and other controversial issues. This groundbreaking book will be a revelation to scholars, city planners, policymakers, and general readers interested in American cities and American history.
Customer Reviews:
The rise of modern america.......2006-12-14
Urban history is a very tough subject to find good books on but Fogelson is among the best. His book on how the Downtown came about is excellent. Well written and focusing on a diverse array of downtowns he explores how the department store and subways developed. He talks about the collapse of the "El's" and urban renewal destroyed the downtown. If you have any interest in urban history this is a great book for experts and novices alike. Fogelson writes very clearly and does a wonderful job explaining his topic. Easily five stars.
a story of unintended consequences.......2005-08-21
Much of this book describes downtown in its early years of decline (1920-50): as cars and highways mushrooomed, shopping begin to move outside downtown. The solutions to this state of affairs were completely counterproductive: downtown business interests assumed that downtown's problem was too much congestion rather than too little, and so fought for a downtown overrun with parking lots and highways. For example, an official of one downtown business group in Los Angeles wrote in 1940 that freeways "will go a long way in solving the traffic problems and consequently make the trip to downtown Los Angeles pleasant for customers and productive for downtown merchants and office tenants alike, and thereby recentralize businesses and offices in a compact area." (p. 274).
The result: even more suburban sprawl as suburbanites took advantage of easier commutes to move further out, and an even deader downtown as highways and parking lots took the place of shops and offices.
Why did downtown boosters make this mistake? Because in downtown's heyday at the start of the century, downtown really was immensely congested; due to the difficulties of intracity travel, nearly all business was downtown. So like generals fighting the last war, downtown boosters were fixated on the congested downtown of 1900, and trying to apply 1900 solutions to the far less lively downtowns of the late 20th century.
Very good book to say the least.......2004-12-30
It is long but easy to follow and enjoyable. It missed out on mentioning that famous German-Jewish director Fritz Lang visited New York City in the 1920's and got the inspiration for the Metropolis film from the Manhatten Skyline.
Fascinating--definitely recommended.......2004-02-18
This is a wonderful book; it is comprehensively researched and offers a detailed history of why US downtowns developed and declined. Anybody who is interested in urban planning and downtown revitalization should read this to see why downtowns were successful for so many years and why they fell; for example, a current trend is to revitalize downtowns by attracting more residents, but 19th century downtowns developed by pushing out residents in favor of commercial growth. I couldn't put this book down; it's absolutely compelling and I would highly recommend it.
Intriguing Insights.......2003-01-01
This is an objective and highly readable history of the decentralization of American cities and the many efforts to stem the decline of downtown. The book's descriptions of the debates and strategies employed to maintain the dominance of downtown in light of suburban growth, the decline of public transit, the construction of urban highways and the rise of outlying shopping centers are intriguing. Some examples: Early subway projects were sometimes opposed as being a fruitless strategy to decrease congestion because they would only lead to more intense development that would bring increased downtown congestion (an argument often heard today regarding highway projects). Highways into downtown were viewed by many as a way to woo suburbanites back downtown, while they turned out to be a major impetus to suburban development. The atom bomb explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki led some planners to advocate for the end of high density settlements as being too risky in the nuclear age. The book doesn't get preachy the way many "planning" books do. It is an objective history that simply tells it like it is.

Modern Masters Volume 2: George Perez contains page after page of rare and unseen artwork, illustrating a comprehensive interview with Perez on his stellar career. This second volume in the new Modern Masters series delves into the artist's life, as Perez discusses his Puerto Rican upbringing, how he broke into the comics field, and the attention to detail that has made him one of comics' top talents.
Customer Reviews:
One of my Top 3 favorites in the series..........2007-05-05
Whether you like his art style or not, George Perez has had a truly phenomenal career- it's really great to read about(!).
I especially like the behind-the-scenes info on the various situations & projects he's been involved with over the years. Things like which inkers he felt complimented his work, how he feels about his own work looking back on it, and the unique relationships he's had with various creators are detailed here. From being an assistant to Rich Buckler & Kirby swipes, to becoming famous for Teen Titans & Avengers, the many comics he's been a part of are all visited in a pretty personal interview overall. Like the John Byrne interview, this entry in the MM series is sprinkled liberally with various pieces of black & white artwork, featuring both pure pencils, and inks. It's all exclusively black & white here, unlike some other entries in the series.
My other current favorites in the series include Modern Masters, Vol. 7: John Byrne (Modern Masters), and Modern Masters, Vol. 5: Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (Modern Masters). Yet they keep on releasing great interviews!
Truly a Modern Comics Master.......2007-02-10
George Perez is a fitting subject for this series of books -- He's been in the comics business for decades, as both artist and writer. This volume includes an extensive interview with Perez, touching on virtually everything he worked on, including the Avengers, the Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, The Justice League, Crisis on Infinite Earths, JLA/Avengers and many more. Following the interview (which itself is liberally sprinkled with art), there is a 28 page art gallery featuring lots of previously unpublished pieces.
Book Description

Includes never-before-seen art, sketch material from all of his major projects: Avengers, Fantastic Four, Teen Titans, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wonder Woman, I-Bots, Ultraforce, and Sachs & Violens!
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book for a phenominal artist!.......2007-08-24
Much like the twoomarrows retrospective of George Perez's career, this one just flows better and has the addition of color over the other. I read this book every day to inspire and never forget my dream of being an artist. Thank you George for 30 great years!
ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITES!.......2007-03-11
For over thirty years, George Perez has not only been one of the best comic book artists around, but perhaps the most consistent as well. I've always has a special affinity for Perez. He broke into comics professionally in 1974 at the age of twenty. This was right around the time I started reading comics and one of the early books I picked up was Inhumans #1. I was only 11 years old at the time but even at that age, I knew that Perez was a special talent. He sure knocked the socks off the typical Marvel Bullpen members of the day such as George Tuska, Herb Trimpe, Frank Robbins, and Jim Mooney. This guy was something extra-special!
George Perez: Storytellerfrom Dynamic Forces, takes a look at the three decade plus career of Perez and the unforgettable stories he's given his legions of fans. We get a glimpse into early Perez with some of his pre-professional work in fanzines. Even then, as a teenager, it is quite easy to see that Perez had "It." While Perez would first make his mark at Marvel Comics, it was DC's Legion of Superheroes that was one of his favorites as a kid.
Pereze discusses his early influences, not only from the world of comics, but also from film, such as those classic sword & sandal Hercules epics starring 60's muscleman Steve Reeves. He also talks about the very harsh advice given to him by legendary artist Neal Adams who pulled no punches in critiquing Perez' early efforts. Perez would, of course, persevere and get his first job as a professional artist doing Man-Wolf in Creatures on the Loose. He would soon come to the attention of Marvel's main man Stan Lee when he filled in on Fantastic Four for Rich Buckler, prompting Stan to give George an immediate raise. Perez was off and running!
This book covers Perez' comic career in great deal from his numerous stints on the Avengers, to the landmark New Teen Titans, to the monumental Crisis On Infinite Earths, it's all here. Perez quickly gained the reputation of being perhaps the premiere team book artist, able to handle literally dozens of characters at a time, a prospect which routinely scares many other artists off. Dozens and dozens of full color examples of Perez' art is on display including panels, sketches, and covers. This is a Perez fan's dream as he has always been of the businesses most gifted cover artists.
Thankfully the book also covers his work outside of Marvel and DC...the almost forgotten stints at defunct Malibu, Event, and CrossGen Comics. The book concludes with a look at his recent work and his noted efforts in raising money for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Finally, there is a thirty page gallery of his art as well as a detailed bibliography of every title and issue that Perez has worked on.
This is simply a marvelous book highlighting one of the true giants of the comic book industry!

Grow a Screenplay the Natural Way
George Perez
Manufacturer: Not Avail
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 1553694945 |
Book Description
Grow A Screenplay The Natural Way describes a method of writing a motion picture screenplay directly from a short story. The book is divided into three sections, which are: The Introduction; Part I, the story--contains the short story on which the screenplay is based; Part II, the screenplay--shows how a movie is written directly from the short story. In effect, the screenplay grows right out of the story! The market for this book is anyone and everyone who ever dreamed of writing a screenplay.
Grow A Screenplay The Natural Way does something other script writing books do not. Other books tell the reader where to put a character's name and where to set the tab stops on the typewriter or computer. They talk about heroes and heroines, plot and structure, positive and negative space. However, those books do not model a method that the majority of inexperienced writers, attempting to write their first screenplay, can successfully follow.
Grow A Screenplay The Natural Way will show you, step by step, how easy and fun it can be, with a little bit of work, to complete a motion picture screenplay-- without all the hassle and in less than half the time. With a copy of this book you will be able to stop dreaming and start writing, today!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent how-to book!.......2003-01-30
Writing a screenplay appeals to me as a writer of novels and short stories. Anyone who has read the more technical books on how to write screenplays -- and glazed over -- will appreciate the clarity and simplicity with which George Perez has presented his concept. He will teach you to turn a short story into a screenplay in easy steps. And why not? Look what Spielberg did with a Richard Matheson short story -- it became the movie "Duel" with Dennis Weaver. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get off to a good start writing screenplays.
Write a screenplay....the fast and easy way!.......2003-01-30
I found this book to be highly educational and easy to follow. The author did an excellent job on the screenplay featured as an example in the book. The plot kept my attention and cleverly gave several examples of direction. This book makes screenwriting seem like a natural progression from a simple short story. I also appreciated the fact that the book itself is the size of a script and has not been shrunk down to a regular trade paperback size. This fact also helps to make the experience more authentic and captures the imagination. This book is also a great method of self-education for someone not wishing to spend astronomical fees for classes and workshops. The price of the book is low and affordable for the struggling writer. I find the theories behind the book to be inventive and facinating.
Not a good screen writing book.......2002-11-02
Save your money. Essence of the book: write your screenplay as a short story, before you write the screenplay. OK. I've saved you the price of this book, If you put CUT TO and POV, and other direction/camera instructions in your script today, no Hollywood script reader will ever read past the first page.

Exhaustive, Invaluable Anthology.......2001-02-01
Blount, that genius of slippery Southern prose, collects here a truly massive number of classic comedy gems concerning life below the Mason-Dixon line. The pieces range from elegantly witty to down-home scatological. Novelists, monologuists, essayists, journalists, and short-story writers are all represented. This book is especially valuable because of the out-of-print masterpieces that are excerpted, like John Fergus Ryan's twisted epic "The Redneck Bride." Highly recommended.
