Book Description

Inspired by a journey through Greece, Marc Chagall, one of the twentieth-century's most popular painters, created a wonderful series of lithographs that brought to life this ancient Greek love story.

The story of Daphnis and Chloe, a pastoral romance attributed to the Greek poet Longus, follows the adventures of two foundling children raised by adopted parents who are humble shepherds in the idyllic setting of the Isle of Lesbos. As Daphnis and Chloe grow to be young adults tending their adopted parents' sheep and goats on the sun-drenched Grecian hillsides and pastures, they discover that their friendship is turning to love but in their innocence they do not know how to proceed. Together they experience many trials and tribulations before finally realizing their true fate. Daphnis and Chloe has served through the ages as an inspiration for nearly every love story that has followed including Romeo and Juliet.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic, tender, and romantic ancient tale with incredible illustrations by Marc Chagall.......2006-08-26

"Daphnis and Chloe" is one of the best known early Greek romances, precursors to the modern novel. Admired by Goethe, it has been reinterpreted in music and art by Ravel and Chagall.
Written by Longus in the second century A.D, it is a classical romance involving the adventures of two foundling children raised by adopted parents who are humble shepherds in the idyllic setting of the Isle of Lesbos. It is a famous love story that captures the awakening of a first love between two teenagers who don't know what is happening to them. The novel that is written almost two thousands years ago is surprisingly modern; it is erotic, tender, romantic, sensual, and simply beautiful. When I read it first time many years ago (I was very much into the ancient art, literature, history, and philosophy), I asked myself why the literature and art did not stop right there and then - nothing better could be possibly done. It is not true, of course but it was one of the rare moments that you'd like to capture and cherish forever. Last month while visiting the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, I bought a miniature book that includes a suite of 42 Lithographs created by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) to illustrate "Daphnis and Chloe". Chagall's visual interpretation of the Greek pastoral romance of the 2nd (or 3rd) century AD is unique and unforgettable. Even if you don't like Chagall's style, you will not be able to forget it. With his 42 Lithographs, Chagall created a monument to both, Longus and himself. "Daphnis and Chloe" is known as one of the great illustrated books of our time.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful tale.......2004-02-01

The story dates from classical Greece. After two thousand years, the story is still fresh and charming - the sign of a true classic. It's about young love, eager and inept, with gods, pirates, and other harmless excitement. The writer included the happy fumblings of physical affection that a modern author would have shied from, sweet and not at all salacious. The story finishes with an improbable and triumphantly happy ending. Good happy fun, and not a lengthy read.

Beyond the story itself, I found this book very informative. The story is supposedly one that Shakespeare read, and it shows. Some of the Bard's endings look a bit recycled once you've read Daphnis and Chloe. I also found that it explained Marc Chagall's cycle of lithographs - the images make more sense, now that I've seen their inspiration. In addition, there's satisfaction in knowing that this story, with such influence on such great minds, and is now a part of my education, too.

All that was extra reward, though. I wanted the book because Chagall's illustration. It's there, in dozens of beautiful color reproductions, including some two-page spreads. Up til now, Marc Chagall has always been in the lower ranks among my favorite artists. After seeing his work in this book, I have a new respect for it. He's still not among my very favorites, but I enjoy the lithos shown here. Even more, I enjoy them as a coherent body visual work and as a narrative.

Best, though, is quality of this book for its price. It's well printed on heavy stock, and the color printing is strong and nuanced. The production values in the color pages and the sheer number of them are quite astonishing for a book that costs so little. I plan to enjoy this book for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars Implausible and ludicrous - just like true love.......2003-08-10

"Charming" and "Idyllic" are two words you'll meet often when reading reviews of this ancient tale. And certainly it is both those things. It is the best known and best loved of the "Erotici Graeci", or Greek love stories, that date from the early centuries of the Common Era. It is characteristic of the genre, featuring as it does pirates, supernatural events and some highly implausible plot elements.

The Penguin Classics edition has an excellent translation, introduction and notes by Paul Turner.

The story includes the curious conceit, common in folk tales, that an infant of aristocratic parentage, raised by peasants, will grow up exhibiting all the innate qualities of nobility, like cuckoo chicks raised in another bird's nest. Nature is all; nurture is nothing. This idea can be found in literature until at least late in the nineteenth century. To (most) modern readers it seems ludicrous. In comparison, the belief in Pan and the Muses appears quite reasonable.

Historians and archeologists can tell us much about ancient civilizations, except for the most interesting thing of all; what were these people really like? Novels, drama and poetry give us glimpses into their very hearts and minds. We learn about their relationships between each other and between themselves and their gods. Sometimes we wonder at how alien and strange they appear; at others we are struck at how much like us - like people always, everywhere - they are. Some things never change. Among them are the pains and joys of young love. For as long as there are young lovers, there will be "Daphnis and Chloe".

5 out of 5 stars Sheer, unadulterated bliss........2001-05-10

Man...Daphnis and Chloe. Surely, this is one of the Best Things Ever. An utterly gorgeous evocation of innocent, sweetly naive pastoral life. I honestly can't think of a single work of literature I've enjoyed more. It's short, but richly deserving of multiple readings. If you're not capable of enjoying it, I don't want to know you. It is truly Great, capital 'G'. However, in the interest of objectivity, I should note that there is one thing about it that somewhat irks me: in the end, the title characters are revealed to by of noble birth. That's not a spoiler; you know it right from the get-go. So, while it was inevitable, it just didn't quite work for me. I would have liked to see them go on in idyllic splendour (note the British spelling) forever.

That, however, is a minor quibble. You must read this. It could even save your life: let's say you've read it, and then, sometime later, for whatever reason, you decide to commit suicide. You'd be very likely to think, at some point, 'hey, wait a minute--I can't die now; I need to reread Daphnis and Chloe!' So then you'd turn the engine off, and after you finished your rereading, you'd realize, 'hey--life is GOOD! What was I thinking?' And you'd be right. Something like this couldn't exist if the world wasn't in some sense fundamentally good.

4 out of 5 stars The Ancient Pastoral Romance.......2000-10-13

Longus's ancient novel, "Daphnis and Chloe" tells the absolutely charming story of a boy (Daphnis) and a girl (Chloe), left to die by exposure in the Greek countryside. Miraculously, the deities are watching out for them--a goat is selected to nurse Daphnis, and a sheep to nurse Chloe--until a goatherd, Lamo, and a shepherd, Dryas, respectively discover the two children. They are raised in the town of Mytilene, a humble agricultural community, where they tend their adopted fathers's herds of goats and sheep.

Here, the mischievous god of love, Eros, sets them aflame with love for each other. Both Daphnis and Chloe are extremely innocent in their affections throughout the novel, experimenting with their feelings and exposing the amusing limits of their little knowledge. Various incidents involving pirates, kidnapping, inter-city war between Mytilene and Methymna, and the suit of Chloe by a host of lusty young men all provide interesting diversions from the main love story. With a very casual cultural attitude towards homoerotic love, we also see the impertinent male slave, Gnatho, make advances toward the clueless Daphnis. Daphnis's run-in with Lycaenium, a married woman of Mytilene, is also an episode of note in the complex sexual landscape of Longus's novel.

Another intriguing factor in Longus's novel is the relationship between humanity and nature. The figure of the goat is omnipresent throughout the novel. Standing apart from our own cultural/religious associations with the goat, in "Daphnis and Chloe," the goat is all at once associated with maternity, reverence, respect, and honesty. In the novel, we see humanity in general in harmony with the natural world all around: plant, beast, and natural divinities.

Into this seemingly innocent landscape, Longus introduces the problematics of class and wealth. The love story between Daphnis and Chloe is further stalled while these issues play themselves out. Society's intrusion into the pastoral story seems to indicate the fantastic nature of the idyll itself. "Daphnis and Chloe" is a brilliant and beautiful ancient tale, and well worth the short time it takes to read.

4 out of 5 stars For People who Make Costumes.......2001-12-18

I found this book helpful in my ongoing research for making
medieval costumes in a number of ways. It gives correct terms for clothing and how they were worn in an historical context and how they overlap in language and region. Although the plethora of terms are at times hard to keep straight with out keeping notes. The book also helps in describing the costumes in the plates. Examples are; what country or people influenced the style or cut, the differences in the head gear, why people are wearing different head coverings, who wore boots in what time period and why they didn't in others.I wish the book had more plates for all the examples the author mentions but doesn't show.I find the reading interesting and helpful but not as complete as I would like. The bibliographical epilogue in chapter nine I thought was especially helpful for further study, but not all inclusive. For the serious costumer of the Middle East I would highly reccommend it. I find it helpful in my research for historically accurate costuming.

2 out of 5 stars Long awaited but very disappointing in places.......2001-02-02

Long awaited and eagerly anticipated by those of us working in this area, 'Arab Dress' raises questions as to the validity and bias of the author's research and text. I can only comment on the problems I found in the small sections that deals with my own areas of knowledge - Palestinian costume - and recommend that Stillman's conclusions regarding other areas of 20th century Arab costume traditions be confirmed by other reference sources.

While Dr Stillman was indeed an acknowledged authority on medieval Arab costume and on Jewish costume in the Middle East, her husband's posthumous accreditation of her in the introduction of this book as "the world's acknowledged expert on the history of the clothing of the Arab world" is perhaps, while understandable, a little excessive. It seems unlikely that "the world's acknowledged expert" would somehow have missed listing 30 years worth of British Museum publications on Arab costume and Islamic textiles in her Bibliography.

Stillman writes that her Bibliography contains a "full conspectus of the secondary literature (together of course with references to the scattered and highly diverse primary sources) on Arab and Islamic attire and costume". On the subject of Palestinian costume alone, only one of Shelagh Weir's seven publications on the subject is listed, as is only one of Jehan Rajab's. Ziva Amir's works are entirely missing. Disturbingly, all the monographs and articles by Palestinians collecting and researching this area - Widad Kawar, Leila el Khalidi, Abu Omar, and Al-Hassan etc - are missing (these authors have at least one monograph each in English). Missing, too, are all the research publications and exhibition catalogues of the Palestinian Heritage Foundation (USA), Palestinian Heritage Center (Bethlehem), Dar el Tifl Museum (Jerusalem), and the Palestine Costume Archive (Canberra) amongst other Palestinian research organizations. As for "scattered and highly diverse primary sources" Stillman lists absolutely none of the sources in Arabic produced over the last 50 years in this field.

In her small section in 'Arab dress' on 20th century ethnographic studies, Stillman sums up a century of research on Palestinian costume in one sentence listing three exhibition catalogues and one monograph, one of which was her own publication on the subject in 1979. The others are Weir (1989) Rajab (1989)(both excellent books, yes)and what she calls an "important anthology" produced by the Institute du Monde Arabe. A quick look inside the cover of this catalogue would reveal it to be the French edition of the exhibition curated by the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne, "Pracht und Gemeimnis: kleidung und schmuck aus Palastina und Jordanien". The Institute du Monde Arabe simply had the exhibition on loan. Credit for the catalogue - and it's reference in her Bibliography (where it only found under the name of the one author who included an article about Ottoman costume - a topic of more interest to Stillman, and one which is well represented in the Bibliography) should have been to the organizing museum. This may appear petty, but it reveals careless research.

I am also concerned about her choice of illustrations and figures. Most deal with early or medieval subjects and are, I'm sure, relevant to her research interests. However, like her text on various 20th century Arab country traditions, contemporary plates are very eclectic. The Palestinian wedding jacket shown (from her 1979 publication) is a bizarre choice as it features foreign motifs and is thus in no way a traditional example. No traditional example is shown to anchor it, nor is any information given about where it is from in Palestine or why or how it was worn. As this is the only illustration of Palestinian costume it would have been nice to have had something more indicative of the culture - even a photograph of a complete outfit showing how various clothing came together would have seemed more relevant. Figure 11, an "example of the Palestinian thawb" also from her 1979 publication, again has no informative text whatsoever, and is thus misleading because thobs only came in that style from one particular area in Palestine. It is misleading to call it representative.

While Stillman makes occasional reference to Palestinian costume in her general text she appears to have undertaken no further research on the subject since her 1979 publication accompanying the exhibition held at the International Museum of Folk Art at Santa Fe. This is of some concern because an awful lot has happened in this field since that time. Apart from issues such as the rise of nationalism and the re-introduction of traditional dress as a form of passive resistance amongst Palestinian women resulting from the original intifada, there has also been huge development in the production of traditional embroidered items by various refugee aid organizations. None of this is mentioned in "Arab Dress", although it has been mentioned in the six or seven English language monographs that have been published since Stillman's 1979 book.

What worries me here is that if I can find this many problems in the one area of this publication with which I am reasonably familiar(after 19 years research)what problems may potentially exist in other areas? I don't doubt Stillman's expertise in early or medieval Islamic attire but her sections on Arab costume by country may not as informed as they first appear. Admittedly this is a posthumous book and may not, despite a labor of love on behalf of her husband, be on the form that she originally visualized publishing. Still, it is a concern when a publication such as this is promoted as an expensive reference tool, and possesses so many omissions. And that is the main problem with "Arab Dress" - omissions in the Bibliography, omissions in the text and omissions in the illustrations.

Buy it for it's historical research on the early and medieval Islamic period by all means, but for the study and illustration of 20th century Arab and Islamic costume and textile traditions, you will need additional reference sources.

      4 out of 5 stars Arabesque Galore!.......2000-08-07

This is a wonderful reference book, not just for the clothing and photos, but a great study of the art and life in Arab cultures. The book is well written and very precise in it's descriptions of the clothing and it's meaning and purpose. It's very well worth the money if you are a serious collector of the culture or just a fashion buff!

Mutts often has me smiling with delighted recognition, chuckling at a charming moment or simply laughing -- and laughing and laughing -- out loud. Humor doesn't have to be cynical, mean or caustic to be utterly hilarious.

      Pure, perfect entertainment.

Mutts is hands down the best daily newspaper strip being published today. There's a perfect balance between cute and smart here and the Sunday strips stand out with clever homages to everything from Norman Rockwell to Captain Beefheart. Sweet and accesible but not stupid, a rare combination these days.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, then poignant.......2001-11-30

Maybe you've seen "Mutts" in your local paper, and already know of "schnubbing," acorn-bombing squirrels and the Lil' Pink Sock. This edition is Earl and Mooch in full color, and the presentation isn't simply the straightforward reprinting of their Sunday strips--McDonnell has put together a beautiful collection of related art and tight focus panels from the strips themselves. The resulting homages add depth to the strips themselves, which hit high notes of hilarity along with sad reminders that Earl and Mooch are some of the lucky animals in our world. (Let Guard Dog off his chain, you monsters!) This is the best comic strip since Calvin and Hobbes, so get on the bandwagon now.

They take the cases no-one wants, that horrify, boggle, and amuse modern society, from the undead (Estate management is so tricky when you come back from the grave) to vampiric Mafioso. Suggested filing location: Humor, horror and the law. Clever artwork and witty satire, not to mention the unusual topic make this graphic novel a standout. Neil Gaiman, who wrote the intro, agrees.

5 out of 5 stars LAWYERS HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS FUNNY.......2005-11-03

The husband and wife team of writer/artist Batton Lash and letterer/editor Jackie Estrada have been creating the hysterical adventures of supernatural attorneys Wolff & Byrd since 1979, first running The Brooklyn Paper and then in the National Law Journal. The pair established Exhibit A Press in 1994 where Wolf & Byrd have been appearing in their own bi-monthly comic ever since. Tales of Supernatural Law reprints the first 8 issues in the comic series that are sure to delight fans of classic horror and monsters.

In "Herbert has Risen from the Grave" the pair provide a twist on the famous horror story "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs as Wolff and Byrd find themselves having to aid a man beset by law suits from his reanimated dog Herbert. "Curse of the Were-house" the lawyers find themselves helping Byrd's old flame, Kim, who lives with her husband in a house by a former dabbler in the dark arts that built the home with wolfsbane...every full moon the house becomes haunted.

One of the funniest stories is "A Host of Horrors" about a bunch of down and out, and unemployed former horror film hosts who lost their jobs when righteous Dr. Forrest Bertrum led the government to crackdown on all things horror years early. A sardonic parody of the all too true crusade of Dr. Frederick Wertham's "Seduction of the Innocent" in the 1950's. This story, featuring classic EC Comics style lettering, finds the horror host, The Bier-Meister accused of stealing the body of Bertrum.

Fans of classic horror will love "It Stalks the Public Domain" as the proprietors of rival traveling horror/freak shows are each displaying the body of the supposed true Dracula. The story draws on House of Frankenstein using names such as Lampini, the character George Zucco played in that film, even recreating the scene where the stake is removed from Dracula's chest and he returns to life, clothes and all, and he is not happy about all of the pretenders! Just a hilarious story!

Cleverly written and with a cartoony, yet polished style of art, Tales of Supernatural is a blast to read, filled with monsters, innuendo and inside jokes. A true hit in the field of small press comics!

In this graphic novel collection of Supernatural Law stories, attorneys Wolff & Byrd represent clients that include a fellow with such a negative attitude that he physically repels people, a born again demon seeking church membership, a gorilla mob boss, a horror novelist in a coma, an unamused muse, and a boy magician with an unusual affliction.

Mister Negativity: And Other Tales Of Supernatural Law by Batton Lash is a fascinating, black-and-white, graphic novel style anthology with a unique premise - that in today's complicated story, supernatural horrors need lawyers too! A pair of attorneys specializing in the supernaturally afflicted take on cases involving a man so negative he literally repels everyone around him, a young wizard, a gangster who has literally turned into a 800-pound purple gorilla, a misogynistic demon who has been "born again" and pursues church membership, and much more. Suspension of disbelief is swept away in the very believeably written stories, with compelling characterization and all-too-human motives among man and unearthly monstrosity alike. Nicely enhanced with an informed and informative introduction by Tom DeHaven, Mister Negativity is enthusiastically recommended to all graphic novel fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great Art, Clever Stories!.......2004-02-17

I loved this book. Even if you don't read comics regularly, it will provide tons of entertainment. The clever and amusing plots make you want more and the art is a joy to behold, providing rich depth to already great stories. With each one there are treats and surprises for readers. Whether it's about relationships, job issues, lawyers, or pop culture, Batton Lash weaves a yarn that is exquisitely rewarding and reveals his remarkable understanding of human nature.

      5 out of 5 stars Postively Entertaining.......2004-02-14

I am always excited when a new Supernatural Law trade paperback becomes available. Not only does it provide me with the pleasure and convenience of rereading stories from the comic books that I so anxiously await every couple of months, but it also allows for a wider audience to come to know and appreciate some of the best humor writing available. Consistently clever and engaging, the tales of Alanna Wolff and Jeff Byrd, attorneys who specialize in cases involving the supernatural, spoof everything from classic monsters like The Mummy to modern masters of horror like Stephen King. I am especially fond of the title story of "Mr. Negativity", the "Trial of the 800 Pound Gorilla" (Just can't resist those gorillas!), and a tale told almost entirely through pictures called "Words Don't Do It Justice." Treat yourself or someone you love (even a young person!)to this latest volume and you will find yourself seeking out other books by Batton Lash, like "Vampire Brat" or "Sonovawitch." Moreover, you will love those, too! Now, do as the judge says, "Order! Order!"

5 out of 5 stars Raising the Bar.......2004-02-13

A demonic dybuk sues for religious tolerance. The horrific creations of a respected author unleash a legal nightmare. The witness stand opens to the walking undead. Ghosts and ghouls approach the bench. Eight-hundred pound talking gorillas sit wherever they want. Beware the Creatures of the Night...(reads the masthead of the monthly Supernatural Law) They Have Lawyers! You don't have to be a comic book fan to recognize the concept as brilliant.

In both comic book and strip form, Batton Lash has long chronicled the lives, loves, and legal adventures of Alanna Wolf and Jeff Byrd, the Counselors of the Macabre (along with their secretary, and my personal heartthrob, the ever intrepid Mavis). As horrifically good as those past exhibits are and have been (and they have been very, very good), Lash has raised the bar with this tightly crafted volume, Mister Negativity and Other Tales of Supernatural Law. With written wit that recalls the hell-er, halcyon sensibilities of Forrest Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland and a strong, sure ink line akin to the best of the EC artistic stable, this offering ranks its creator as one of the greatest in the medium of comics.

Enjoy Mister Negativity...for a number of reasons. Enjoy it for the recognizable pop culture foibles Lash so accurately lampoons, for the well woven plots and subplots he smartly conceives, and for the wonderfully realized characters he brings to life with a deft stroke of the pen.

Simply put, this trade paperback collects some of the most consistently fine work you'll find in any comics series of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Rewards multiple readings!.......2004-02-13

Fun-filled (and pun-filled) stories of a law firm that represents monsters, ghosts and boy magicians. Writer and artist, Batton Lash, manages to wring every possible joke out of every new client, making for some groans among the many guffaws. Great fun for fans of Scary Godmother, Stephen King, Spider Robinson and Universal monster movies. I wouldn't hesitate to read this to my son, but there are barrels of puns and references that would go right over his head and make it much more enjoyable for adults. "Supernatural Law" is among the very best comics being published today and this big collection of recent issues makes it easy to jump on board or to inexpensively reread favorite stories. Highly recommended!

        Book Description

Dark of the Night. It is a time when sleep eludes you, shadows move and voices whisper. When old fears rise unbidden, screams are stifled and hearts stop beating. It is that moment when you are gripped by pure, overwhelming terror...

In this original collection of all-new stories of psychological and supernatural dread, that moment comes when a horror writer is stalked by his greatest fan... an old lover lives on in an empty room...a couple are pursued by a deadly scarecrow... a seaside pier is the gateway to another time... a man learns about living from the dead...

Such modern masters of the macabre as Ramsey Campbell, Christopher Fowler, Kim Newman, Michael Marshall Smith, Stephen Laws, Douglas E Winter, Richard Christian Matheson and others show you what it is like to loose control--of your mind, your identity, even your very soul--as they explore the terrors that wait for us all between dusk and dawn in the Dark of the Night.
