Lots of color pictures.......1998-08-13
This book would be a useful resource for middle eastern dancers looking for costume ideas, but is not as helpful for those looking for exact information about how the garments are made. Many of the poses used by the models are very dramatic (or even high fashion) and attractive, but make it difficult to make out the details of the garments. Historical information is sketchy. However, the wide variety of garments shown and the fact that they are shown in color, together with the extensive commentary in the text, makes this a useful book. There are few books covering Bedouin dress this extensively.

"Good Bye, Cruel World!".......2004-08-19
I read this book last summer and I found it so uproariously hysterical that I decided to get up and fix myself another drink instead of shooting myself in the head. Such is the power of Tony Millionaire's Maakies. Yes, a comic book saved me from depression.
What's the secret behind Millionaire's unique formula? Suicide+alcoholism+naval battles=comedy? William S. Burroughs+Walt Disney+Herman Melville? The artwork, which is fairly detailed and traditional, and the cute characters act as a deceptive foil to the dirty jokes and ultraviolence that usually occur by the third or fourth panel of each strip. Maakies is a world constantly flipping back and forth between surreal poetic whimsy and scatalogical tomfoolery, innocent beauty and profane nastiness waltzing together in the ballroom of the subconscious.
Better than a pint of gin...almost........2003-12-08
I was REALLY plasterred when I read this, but I remember thinking it was funny, or maybe that was just the seizures coming back.
Regardless. If I hadn't spilled whiskey all over it, I could tell you how beautiful the artwork is, i think; If I had the money, I'd buy a new one, but again, I spilled the whiskey, and I need more before the DTs catch up with me.
One of the all time Greats.......2003-05-18
Maakies is easly one of the all time greatest comic strips. Besides being beautifully drawn the strips wander drunkenly from lyric beauty to mind-numbing cruidity to nameless horror. There is no other source of such consistent humor, strangeness and unease. Gabby and Drinky Crow say the things you only think about saying as well as things you would rather not even think about let alone ever say.
How creative and uniques is Maakies? I have not once managed to describe it properly to any of my friends and have always had to give them the book so they can see for themselves.
beautiful art, tasteless jokes, and timeless characters.......2003-03-08
Maakies seems like the kind of thing that was meant for sick-minded intellectuals. I happen to be a former comic book geek (i worked in a comic book store for 3 years) and was introduced to Tony Millionaire through his amazing comic book Sock Monkey.
I have to say that this book is not necessarily for everyone. The humor is offensive and tasteless, and the jokes mostly revolve around the characters getting drunk and or dismembered. The two main characters, which are sort of alternate universe versions of the characters in Sock Monkey, Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby, are two of the most memorable and hilarious characters i've seen in the comics. You just have to cheer for the Crow every time he goes "dook dook dook."
I would have to say that the quality from strip to strip and from joke to joke vary quite a lot. Most of the art is strikingly beautiful and meticulous, although sometimes the art becomes extremely crude, not always to great effect. Working in a comic book store gave me the background to get extra pleasure in the Pokemon-skewering strip. The jokes are sometimes not funny at all and there are even strips with practically no joke.
I did laugh quite a bit while reading this book, and not once thought twice about it. I do have to say that this was a great purchase and if you like clever yet tasteless jokes and beautiful as well as sort of disgusting art, this book is for you.
So dark it makes Sock Monkey look like Richie Rich.......2001-05-21
I came to this collection of Tony Millionaire's weekly comic strip through my love of his classic Dark Horse comic book, Sock Monkey, which preserves Millionaire's Victorian settings and his astounding artwork but in which the humor is ordinarily innocent except for a mordant twist at the end that you wouldn't want to show your kids. The relative purity of the rest of the humor in Sock Monkey made the horror at the end more wrenching. It gives Sock Monkey a unique flavor, but even so, the horror is not a large part of the book. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Millionaire's weekly comic strip, which I had expected to be skewed to a larger audience than the comic book, was as bleak and nasty as the final panels of a Sock Monkey story, and frequently far worse.
Maakies is a collection of wonderfully drawn stories about the self-loathing alcoholic Drinky Crow and his vulgar monkey companion Uncle Gabby, who wallow in drink and degradation except when they screw up and kill themselves. Despite the unremitting horrors they experience, from venereal disease to death at the hands of their nautical enemies the French crocodiles, Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby wittily rue their drinking and keep their chins up. The juxtaposition of the old-style art and old-time British nautical themes and language with gore, death, and nastiness is more eerie than funny, but is highly compelling in a guilty sort of way.
Maakies is definitely not for all audiences, or, I would imagine, even most audiences. I suggest reading Sock Monkey first. If you think Sock Monkey is fine but does not go far enough, then try Maakies.

The Collected Works of Tony Millionaire's Sock Monkey
ASIN: 1560977787 |
Book Description
Collecting the first five years of the world's most riotous comic strip.
Tony Millionaire's Maakies is one of the best and most popular weekly comic strips in America, running in over a dozen of the largest U.S. weekly newspapers including the Village Voice, L.A Weekly and Seattle's The Stranger. The strip is currently being developed for the Cartoon Network's popular Adult Swim. Maakies features the comical adventures of a drunken crow on the high seas, blending vaudeville-style humor and a breathtaking line that harkens back to the glory days of the American comic strip.
Designed by publishing's foremost graphic designer, Chip Kidd, Premillennial Maakies is a newly designed edition of the long out-of-print first Maakies collection, featuring the first five years of the strip, re-formatted in a beautiful, deluxe, landscape hardcover format that complements the strip's elegant and classical style.
Maakies suggests a contemporary collaboration between E.C. Segar, creator of Popeye, and seafaring novelist Patrick O'Brian (Master and Commander). Millionaire has won multiple Harvey and Eisner Awards and Maakies has appeared as a series of animated segments on NBC's Saturday Night Live. He is also the creator of the popular Sock Monkey and Billy Hazelnuts books.

Where have you been all my life?.......2007-07-03
Somehow I missed the Maakies boat (ho man! I don't normally make puns...)
This comic never registered. Somehow I never noticed any articles on it.
Then one day I read an article about Tony Millionaire and Maakies and I thought,
"This looks interesting... where have I seen this before?". The comics were familiar.
I know I've seen them comic, but somehow in the entire decade of the 90's
Maakies just never quite registered with me.
So anyway, I got the book and realized I was missing out on brilliance.
The art is superb, but the demented humor is what puts it on my shelf
right next to my R. Crumb books...
ahh,yes...MAAKIES!!!.......2006-11-09
The intoxicating (and very vulgar) adventures of Drinky Crow and his friend Mr.Gabby,(and others) all together in this collection of artist extrodinaire Tony Millionaires early work.
Great artwork,great comics,great book.Get it right now.

A new hardcover collection of one of America's most popular weekly comic strips. Tony Millionaire's Maakies is one of the best and most popular weekly comic strips in America, running in over a dozen of the largest US weekly newspapers including the Village Voice, L.A Weekly, and Seattle's The Stranger. Maakies features the comical adventures of a drunken crow on the high seas, blending vaudeville-style humor and a breathtaking line that harkens back to the glory days of the American comic strip. Designed by publishing's foremost graphic designer, Chip Kidd, When We Were Very Maakies is our second hardcover collection and features over two years' worth of Maakies in a beautiful, deluxe, landscape hardcover format that complements the strip's elegant and classical style.
Dave Eggers, the bestselling author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, contributes the introduction to When We Were Very Maakies. Reading Maakies is like reading a beautifully illustrated diary. If you pay attention you can watch the evolution of the cartoonist as he grows from a drunken penniless ne'e'r-do-well to a drunken million-dollar-less som'tim's-do-well. This book collects the latest of Tony Millionaire's weekly strips, and includes such gems as the story of a pregnant butterfly,a motorcycle-riding leprechaun and a worm who lives inside the bowels of a frozen dead monkey in a NASA space capsule orbiting the Orion constellation. Of course Drinky Crow, as always, steals the show.
He is also the creator of the popular Sock Monkey line of comics and children's books.

Drunk! Violent!.......2005-04-22
This book is good and raunchy. Maakies is not for everyone, but neither is cancer medication. Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby get hammered, are offensive, sometimes don't make sense, and they're usually hilarious.

The Collected Works of Tony Millionaire's Sock Monkey
ASIN: 1560975083 |
Book Description
A new oversized (12" x 7") hardcover collection of one of America's most beloved weekly comic strips. Tony Millionaire's Maakies is one of the most popular weekly comic strips in America, running in over ten of the largest US weekly newspapers, including the New York Press, New Times Los Angeles, and Seattle's The Stranger. Maakies features the comical adventures of a drunken crow on the high seas, blending vaudeville-style humor and a breathtaking line that harkens back to the glory days of the American comic strip. Designed by publishing's foremost graphic designer, Chip Kidd, The House at Maakies Corner features a year's worth of Maakies in a beautiful, deluxe hardcover format that complements the strip's elegant and classical style.
Maakies suggests a contemporary collaboration between E. C. Segar, creator of Popeye, and seafaring novelist Patrick O'Brian (Millionaire is a tremendous fan of both). Millionaire has won multiple Harvey and Eisner Awards and Maakies has appeared as a series of animated segments on NBC's Saturday Night Live.
Customer Reviews:
Twisted Nautically-Flavoured Comedy Ahoy!.......2005-04-28
Take Drinky Crow, a monkey called Uncle Gabby, and a cast of characters straight from the age of vaudeville, put them in the Napoleonic wars and you have Tony Millionaire's newspaper strip, a brilliant, literate and twisted take on history and humour. Rude and erudite, philosophical, completely unique and beautifully drawn (especially the ships.) I'm overdoing the adjectives because it's so hard to quote from. When it comes right down to it, these cartoons are very funny, very original. A whole year's worth of the strip is hardcover bound in a short long book that stays true to the form of the format, giving the only quibble that it's hard to fit on a shelf. A cunning plan to force you to leave it lying around.
Demented and amazing.......2004-08-01
I had to laugh at the reviewer who gave this book one star because it should not be given to a child. Would he give one star to a waffle-iron for the same reason?
Maakies is distinctive for the inspired artwork and the absolutely crazed antics of Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby. Yes, some of the strips are gross to the point of making one choke at reading them, but after you're done choking you will start laughing.
True humor comes from despair.......2003-10-21
In the comics desert of the late 20th century, who could fans of the Great Old Stuff look to? The old heroes are gone: Elsie Segar, Geo. Herriman, Hal Foster. Who even comes close? The only strips that aspire to any kind of artistic expression are either saccharine crud (Mutts) or winky-snarky napkin-doodling (Life in Hell.) Five cheers then for Tony M! Maakies has all the seafaring verve of the old popeye, all the poetic strangeness of Krazy Kat, all the fearsome draughtsmanship of Prince Valiant. The humor? Maakies could only be a fin-de-siecle strip; its gin-soaked angst and violent despair could only get yuks from today's jaded mal-vivants, weaned on Celine and the Brady Bunch. It's not for everybody; only those with the sap necessary to face the maelstrom in the teeth will see its gritty resonance and ludicrous poetry.
Ghastly but Good.......2003-07-10
Tony Millionaire's weekly strip about the raunchy adventures of Drinky Crow and Uncle Gabby isn't for kids. Or grandma. Or maybe even for you; a lot of people will be terribly offended by the violence, sexism, and depiction of drunk, frequently suicidal animals.
But to heck with them! In small doses "Maakies" is great fun.
_The House on Maakies Corner_ hardcover is beautifully produced. The extra-wide, one-strip-per-page format shows off Millionaire's considerable talents better than the previous collection.
Alas, this also means that there are far fewer strips here. Pricey fun . . .
Do not give this book to a kid!.......2003-05-06
It will give the child nightmares that will linger for years. Sadly, Millionaire here abandons the lyricism of the Sock Monkey stories in favor of extreme grossout humor and, what a surprise, misogyny. There are a few good strips here, and the drawing talent is still evident, but the jokes are mostly both witless and grim. (Example: a man decides that he'll be more like a woman if he "cuts off his penis and walks around crying." That WOULD make a dude cry.) My impression is that Millionaire is himself so easily grossed out by things like menstruation, that he wants to take it out on the world by making them feel as nasty as he does. Hopefully he's worked out some issues with this one, and will return to a more benevolent Sock-Monkey Land soon.

"In his surrealist impulse and draftsman's brio, Millionaire is the closest thing we have to George Herriman of Krazy Kat."The New York Times Book Review
Drinky Crow may be the drunken star of the weekly comic strip Maakies, but more often than not, he plays straight man to the hapless ape, Uncle Gabby. Here is the newest collection of Tony Millionaire's strip, never before published in book form. The suicide jokes may come less frequently than in earlier years, but the comedy and superb drawing style are at their peak, as is the volume of triple-X cartoon booze consumed. Catch the new animated The Drinky Crow Show on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim starring the voices of Billy West, Dave Herman, Becky Thyre, and Tom "Spongebob" Kenny.

Book Description
Laura Ward, whose Foolish Words and Famous Last Words were so successful, takes a wickedly amusing look at our wacky, weird culture of litigation. It's entertaining and enlightening.
Here comes the judge, and justice decrees that the law has never been funnier. In an age of litigation run rampant, lawsuits have become increasingly bizarre--not to mention downright silly. These are some of the strangest cases ever, some of which have received attention in the news and others that remain more obscure. Even the section titles, which include The Trouble with Neighbors, When Love Breaks Down, Fired!, Holidays from Hell, Road Rage, and Burglars who Sue, will raise smiles of expectation on every reader's face. Here are just a few instances of legal weirdness:
Kathleen Robinson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $780,000 after she broke her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amok in a furniture store. The twist: the child was Mrs. Robinson's own son.
A man left asleep on an aircraft after it landed sued U.S. Airlines for negligence. Apparently, he suffered mental and emotional distress when he awoke, because he assumed the plane had crashed and that he was actually dead.
An "In Brief" overview at the head of every chapter provides a tantalizing taste of what's to come.
Customer Reviews:
Not funny.......2005-09-07
A book about quirky laws and lawsuits is a reasonably good idea. The book could be funny, entertaining and informative. Crazy Laws, however, fails miserably. It is not funny and not entertaining. I was bored to tears with Mr. Allen's style. If you think this book is humorous, read the United States Constitution. You'll die laughing.
