Book Description
It has been more than ten years since the last edition of the bestselling Restoration and Management of Lakes and Reservoirs. In that time, lake and reservoir management and restoration technologies have evolved and an enhanced version of this standard resource is long overdue. Completely revised and updated, the third edition continues the tradition of providing comprehensive coverage of the chemical, physical, and biological processes of eutrophication and its control. The authors describe the eutrophication process, outline methods for developing a pre-management and restoration diagnosis-feasibility study, and provide detailed descriptions of scientifically sound management and restoration methods. See what's new in the Third Edition: · New chapters on aquatic plant ecology and management · Emphasis on freshwater availability · A regional framework for water quality attainment · Methods of lake and reservoir restoration and management · Updates or revisions to all other chapters The book features in-depth discussions of techniques used to manage eutrophication in standing water bodies, procedures for using these techniques, the principles involved, and successes and failures through a selection of case studies and cost analyses. Each chapter includes an introduction to the scientific basis of the problem, a description of the methods and procedures, and presents several case histories. Potential negative impacts and costs, where known, are described. A useful classroom text, reference manual, and general guide, this is the text against which all other resources in this field are measured.

the best of Stanley spencer.......2006-11-17
I have read most of the books on Stanley Spencer. This book has the most plates and an in depth discussion of the work and life of Sir Stanley. Another book I would like is : the sketchbooks of Stanley Spencer. His drawings are not slick they are a bit crude and naive by art school standards He was a student of Tonks . Philip Evergood also studied with Tonks and his drawings are similar. They have a childlike naivete that I like.
Stanley Spencer.......2000-03-30
This is an excellent survey of the work of the English painter Stanley Spencer. It contains work from the early periods of his life that you rarely have an opportunity to see. There is a very in depth and critical veiw into the life of this great artist. The reproductions of the work are almost all in color and of high quality. This is a book that clearly shows that Spencer was that English artist who has been the inspiration of many English artist who followed him. The range of his work is truly exceptional from the religious to the nude studies and portraits of family. This is the Book that is a must to have if you are looking at figurative painting in the 20th century. It is expansive and completely beautiful.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction.......2007-08-05
I really enjoyed this book. This is a concise (about 120 pages of text) and well illustrated (about 100 images) introduction to the remarkable English painter Stanley Spencer. Robinson's text provides a useful biography of Spencer's career, a good idea of his rather unconventional ideas, and short accounts of how he fit into the artistic currents of his times. The selection of images is very good and illustrates well the range of Spencer's work and its evolution over his long and productive career.
Spencer is known best for his religious paintings, notably the powerful mural The Resurrection of the Soldiers in the Sandham Memorial Chapel. A man of deep and unconventional faith, Spencer produced a large number of canvases with religious themes, usually fusing the sacred and the quotidian. A native of the village of Cookham, where he spent much of his working life, the environs of his town were literally sacred ground to Spencer. This resulted in a very personal but surprisingly effective icongraphy.
What makes this book particularly enjoyable is the revelation of the range of Spencer's art. Spencer was also an outstanding landscape painter and a superb portraitist. This book reproduces a number of lovely landscape paintings. Some of the portraits reproduced, both drawings and paintings, are stunning.
An Introduction, by fermed.......2000-03-03
Duncan Robinson is a professor at Yale, and his book on Stanley Spencer is a fine introduction to this mad eccentric from Cookham-on-Thames. Not long ago (1998) there was an exhibit of Spencer's work that traveled the United States, and so his name in this country is not as unknown as it used to be. Whether one is familiar with his work or not, this is a well balanced and nicely printed book, with over 100 reproductions, of which at least half are in color. I keep the book handy and have given copies of it to unsuspecting friends and relatives, who then (usually) become addicts of Mr. Spencer.
For those who have never seen Spencer's work, I certainly recommend using the internet as a first step in getting a feel for what he biographical and bibliographical information (although Robinson's book is not mentioned). The main drawback about looking at pictures on the internet is that many are so small and distorted that they dishonor the works they are trying to show; still, a visual approach is more effective than trying to describe the work of this extraordinary painter verbally. The pictures in Robinson's book, in contrast, are excellent reproductions and quite adequate as a means of presenting Spencer's work. I took a copy of this book to his exhibit and was satisfied with the quality of the reproductions one of England's most important painters of the 20th century.

Good And Evil At Their Most Intense.......2006-07-14
As far as Shakespeare's tragedies go, I have some respect for "Romeo and Juliet." I think "Timon of Athens" and "Coriolanus" are really underrated. I do not like "Othello" at all. I really like "Macbeth." And along with "Julius Caesar" and "Hamlet," "King Lear" is one of my favorite tragedies. The play starts with an aged King Lear displaying poor judgement by announcing his retirement and leaving his power to his 2 overly ambitious daughters (Goneril and Regan) while banishing the daughter (Cordelia) who IS worthy of his trust. (Cordelia ends up getting married to the French king and thus becoming Queen of France.) (King Lear also banishes his loyal servant Kent whom he should trust as well.) In a subplot, the good hearted Gloucester is unhappy with the king's decision, but ironically he falls into the same trap of declaring war on his son (Edgar) whom he should trust, and placing trust and reliance on his monstrously evil son Edmund. By the end of the first act, the ever loyal Kent disguises himself and King Lear allows him to be in his employ. At first, Shakespeare leaves it ambiguous as to who we should like. (King Lear was not so likable, and his questionable at best sanity makes us like him even less.) But by the end of the second act, Shakespeare shows us that Regan, her husband Cornwall, and Goneril would do Satan proud. And Edmund may outdo even these three! And once Shakespeare shifts our sympathy to King Lear, he DOES NOT allow it to slack for a moment. In fact, it will intensify throughout the story. While we don't see much of Goneril's virutous and honorable husband Albany, other characters speak of his growing contempt for the diabolical Duke of Cornwall, and we are prepared for his sudden entrance in the 4th act. This helps build suspense as well as the French invasion Cordelia is planning on behalf of her father. (Talk about forgiving someone really fast!) Meanwhile, Kent, Cordelia, and Edgar are quite Christ like. Kent never abandons the king, Cordelia never lost her love for her father, and Edgar continues to love his father. (This is prevalent when Gloucester suffers a horrible fate at the end of the 3rd act, and Edgar does everything humanly possible for him.) The diabolical Cornwall may have been killed, but sadly, the harm is done. It is interesting that Kent and Edgar both continue to love and serve the one who mistreated them, even to the point of wearing a disguise. Well, moving on, Lear is eventually reunited with Cordelia, and the scene where Cordelia forgives him is one of Shakespeare's most beautiful scenes. But Shakespeare does not stop here. Lear's two wicked daughters both want the affection of the evil Edmund, and Goneril plots to have her benevolent husband Albany killed. To complicate matters further, Cordelia launches the French invasion on behalf of her father, and while Albany shares her views, he really does have an obligation to protect the land: "For this business, it touches us as France invades our land." In an almost Easter fashion, Edgar reappears to challenge his wicked brother in trial by combat. (It is interesting that on an audio version, Robert Powell who is famous for playing Jesus in "Jesus of Nazareth" does the voice of the Christ like Edgar.) But even as Albany, Edgar, and Kent gain control of the situation, Shakespeare has one of his saddest endings waiting for us. This play is the perfect cure for Hollywood's movies that tend to glorify war. "King Lear" is arguably Shakespeare's most brutal play, but the violence is most disturbing even when the virtuous characters are triumphant. The story actually DOES need the violence, but Shakespeare seems to know quite well that war and violence are disturbing and should be portrayed so. Furthermore, the death of one's enemies may NOT exactly lead to a happy ending!

A lively analysis of all the major warships.......2005-05-12
Battleships: An Illustrated History Of Their Impact, as part of ABC-CLIO's 'Weapons and Warfare' series, could also have been featured in a military history column, but deserves mention in our transportation section as an excellent illustrated history of their construction and impact. Chapters begin with wooden battleships from 2000 BC and move through steam, dreadnought and later eras, covering different approaches to styles and warfare effectiveness and drawing important links between battleship construction and changing military approaches. Both military readers and those interested in boats and naval activities will find Stanley Sandler's Battleships a lively analysis of all the major warships.

Customer Reviews:
Hilarious book.......2007-01-20
One of the funniest books to read. Packed with delightful humor to bring smiles the entire Christmas season. Difficult to put down. Can read it again and laugh just as much.
HO HO HO from the Simpsons! Holiday cheer is here! .......2006-11-28
The Simpsons 'Holiday Humdinger' is an excellent collection of comics, and this one in particular hits on many different levels. Not only are we seeing the main characters that we love placed in crazy holiday situations, but a lot of careful attention was poured into clever in-jokes and homage's to past characters and episodes. Since the Simpsons brand comics usually play out like a half hour episode, their comic production values have been excellent. The flow of the story, the perfect colors, the likeness of the characters....all of these elements make the comic strips come together in a great way.
In the case of this holiday edition, not only do we get the longer stories but we also get much more: A few two-page spreads of Christmas silliness courtesy of the Springfield Elementary gym, the power plant, and the comic book store. In these bits, there is so much going on at once that is takes a 2nd and 3rd glance to make sure you don't miss all the laughs. We are also treated to holiday "cards," coming from many Springfield hot spots and major players. Fans of the series will think back to some past TV episodes to make the connection with some of these holiday greetings! There are a few Angry Dad cameos as well! And Christmas would certainly feel empty without Itchy & Scratchy, so get ready for a great story involving our favorite cat and mouse.
As with many other Simpsons collections, many of these comics may have appeared in the monthly editions in the past. So beware if you do not like the idea of getting repeat material. Otherwise, this is an absolute holiday treat ! Enjoy!

Book Description
"When the retirement gun sounded, my husband barked his last order and left his executive desk silhouetted in the sunset. He stalked into my home territory, there to stay, to rule my domain. In a flash, I turned into a fierce Tigress, defending my lair." A collection of light-hearted vignettes for retirees by an award-winning writer. Helen Glissmeyer is a freelance journalist who has published a few hundred articles in local and national newspapers and magazines. After receiving numerous awards for her writing over the years, she was named "Writer of the Year" by the League of Utah Writers in 2002. She resides in Holladay, Utah, with her retired husband, and has two sons, two daughters and 13 grandchildren. "I've read that a tigress will protect her own territory with all her striped might. She will not let another animal trespass her lair without a fight. And if provoked, the cat will bellow a roar that can be heard for two miles. Such a tigress once lived at my house. When her territory was invaded, she fought for her rights, and she roared a terrible roar. I was that tigress. I turned into a defensive, unpleasant beast when my husband retired. Before that event, I had been the epitome of a happy homemaker. I had overcome the depression of seeing all my little birdies fly from the nest, and at last enjoyed the freedom of quiet solitude. I reveled in sleep-late mornings, low-cal lunches and hobby-laden afternoons. I was an idol of independence and a queen of my palace. In the meantime, high on the 18th floor of a downtown tower, my husband ruled his own white-collar kingdom. He cracked the whip over a herd of accountants and secretaries. Each morning my husband awoke ready to take command of his office empire. At the same time, he let me blindly believe I was in control of my home space."
