The Honest Truth about Rock Art.......2007-01-04
This book should be required reading for anyone seriously interested in rock art. It debunks all of the fanciful conjecture that typically surrounds the subject. It may come across as negative, but it separates the fact from fiction. Read this book first, and then keep it handy as you peruse other literature on this subject.
Great Rock Art Pictures in this book.......2004-07-13
I don't agree with the other negative reviews. I bought this book many years ago in a museum in Utah for the pictures, and have treasured it ever since. I'll have to admit, I didn't read the text very much, so I can't comment on that aspect of the book. I have hiked around the southwest quite a bit and have seen many rock art sites. This book has a lot of great (black & white) photos of petroglyphs, showing many creative designs that I have not seen before. Plus, the book is not that expensive.
Pervasive Uncertainty.......2003-08-17
Barnes writes a book that is frustrating to read through and through because of its pervasive uncertainty. For Barnes, one can not know very much about Rock Art, the subject of his book. For beginners, Barnes questions the adequacy of the term "rock art." He finds it "flawed and semantically misleading." yet he uses the term anyhow.
Barnes fairs little better when making assertions. On page 58 he says that "it is possible to assign some canyon country rock art to particular prehistoric cultures." However Barnes obliges with only one sentence of details, a generalization which he then qualifies.
Barnes does not know who created the petroglyphs and pictographs of the Four Corners area. He does not know when they were created. He does not know to which culture they belong. Too much of Barnes' book is marred by his pervasive uncertainty. If I keep this book, it is only for the photographs.
A Negative Approach To The Problem.......2000-10-27
I was very disappointed in this book due to the fact that the first 155 pages are devoted to a negative discourse on why amature, as well as professional rock art enthusiasts, are foolish and wrong in their attempts to make sense of, and understand what these ancients were trying to tell.
The second half of the book contains a very nice, brief description of the most well known rock art sites throughout the greater four corners area. The short descriptions are accompanied by well presented black and white photos representing type examples of petroglyphs in each area.
The book contains some useful information if one can glean it from the negative dialogue.

Customer Reviews:
Good Basics.......2002-11-22
I am a recent born-again knitter, having started again after 35 years of never touching a knitting needle! I forgot everything I had ever learned. Once I re-learned how to cast on, I found this to be a good reference book for the rest of the basics.
Abbey begins with all kinds of needles, regular and "special needs", then proceeds to the extra equipment like counters, stitich holders, ring markers, etc.
The next chapter covers all types of yarns, man-made and wools that include vicuna, cashmere, and alpaca. Also included is a description of how yarns are made and the history of yarn.
A really valuable section was the part on abbreviations since every pattern uses them extensively.
All basic techniques are covered: casting on, yarn over, increasing and decreasing, casting off, cross-overs, measuring, assembling and finishing.
The illustrations are good if no-nonsense, but I am glad I have a friendly knitting/yarn store nearby to demonstrate for me!
I was fascinated with the large section about knitting with ribbons, but I have a long way to go before I am proficient enough to do this gorgeous technique.
The final section was devoted to a huge variety of pattern stitches which I may someday be able to do--with lots of practice.
A good, clear, solid reference.......2002-07-07
I bought this book many years ago when it was first published, but only recently have begun to appreciate it. After a hiatus from knitting, lasting nearly 20 years, I have taken it up again. I have bought some of the newer references to review the more advanced stitches and techniques, many of which I'd completely forgotten, but I have found this book, originally published in 1971, to be more complete and clear than any of the newer books I have. The text is good in explaining the techniques, and the illustrations are outstanding! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it contains none of the glossy, color illustrations or projects that characterize the newer references and which most of us have come to expect. As noted in another review, this is a no-frills reference; but the information is solid, and I'm sure I will be consulting this book often.
Reliable, no frills knitting reference.......2002-04-29
First, a warning. This book has absolutely no frills. No patterns, no color pictures, just a lot of good kntting advice. Also, since it was written in the 70s, some of the knitting techniques are given different names than what a modern knitter is used to. For all this, the book is a wonderful addition to a knitter's library.
It is a book of a "knitter's knitter", I agree that it is not for a total beginner. The basics are rushed through in favor of more advanced techniques. There is a wonderful section on ribbon knitting and a very well researched chapter on various yarns, their origins and history.
Most of all, there is a section on knitting terms translated from other languages. Included are British terms, French, German and Swedish. This is a great help when dealing with the great number of wonderful knitting patterns available from other countries. (The very poular German magazine Rebecca, for example, though it comes with a translation booklet. Then again, if you ever lose it...) I consider this section a very valuable source.
Last of all, there are many fascinating stitch patterns to be tried, two handed fair isle knitting explained (though other books explain this technique too) and tips on argyle knitting.
The book is full of good information and you simply can't go wrong. Every knitter needs a good general reference book (or ten!) and this one is certainly going to be on my shelf.
A Good Basic Reference.......2002-04-22
This was one of the first books I bought when I decided that I needed some reference books. I still turn to it regularly, especially for the pattern designs in the back. This book provides a good overall reference and covers the basics that everyone should know, especially a beginner. I don't know if I would want to teach myself to knit from this book, although it does cover the very basics. I especially appreciate the breadth of the book and the pattern reference which is a good starter reference, rather than buying a second book. My first knitting book was the Leisure Arts "Learn to Knit" booklet and this book would make a good companion to that for a complete beginner. For the price I think it is one of the best overall references for a beginning or relatively inexperienced knitter. For a more advanced knitter, or one who is adventuresome, I recommend Montse Stanley's "Knitter's Handbook" although that does not have a stitch pattern guide.

Book Description
In a gripping tale of bone-chilling horror, writer Scott Ciencin (Silent Hill: Dying Inside) follows a young soldier suffering from survivor's guilt into the darkened confines of Silent Hill. There, he will meet a doomed soul that will change his life forever... or end it.
Customer Reviews:
A convoluted mess.......2006-05-18
Silent Hill is supposed to be a mystery. There are some questions that cannot be answered... yet at the same time none of the games have featured stories that were next to impossible for me to follow. This comic was guilty of that crime, as it bounces around way too much, and the artwork is perhaps too sloppy and muddy to make it clear what is going on. By the time I finished reading this comic I had a whopper of a headache trying to follow this story.
I hope the other Silent Hill comics fared better. I'm more tempted to blame the art work than the writing on this one because if the art work had been clear enough to convey the story I might have been able to follow it better.
I was disappointed when I learned that the Metal Gear Solid features similar art in their comics, and simply I plan to avoid it too, I simply cannot interpret the story from this slop.
A sad case of muddy artwork and sorry storytelling.......2005-12-31
Among the Damned is the first sequel jump into the Silent Hill comic book universe. For the hardcore SH fan, it might spark an idea or two, and the creature design is somewhat detailed, but the storytelling aspect of the artwork falls apart.
I believe that Shaun Thomas might be a fantastic artist when it comes to one piece at a time (with a very heavy influence from the work of HR Giger), but he doesn't have the chops to tell a story. Each panel feels like the character is simply posed, waiting for someone to take their photo.
In a slower book, this might have been okay, but Scott Ciencin is trying to cram a Stephen King novel into the space of two comic books and it just doesn't work.

Cantankerous cultural icon Andy Rooney has come up with a twist on a concept for his latest book: instead of printing letters that people have written to him, he has collected his own responses, prefaced with occasional editorial notes to get the reader up to speed. All together, they make an interesting chronicle of his career, spanning everything from his missive to CBS management's 1950 request to swear that he had never been a member of the Communist party to his response to a modern conspiracy theorist. Rooney is at his best when his sly deadpan humor comes out, as when he replies to the editor of a celebrity cookbook with a recipe for baked potato ice cream. Just as enjoyable for other reasons are the pieces in which he becomes almost breathtaking in his cussedness, stubbornly waging an extensive battle against the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and mercilessly ripping apart the letters of a fifth-grade class. Regular viewers of 60 Minutes will be gratified to see that even in short letters, Rooney has a tendency to take sudden detours into his trademark quotidian observations ("Of all the postal abbreviations, MI is the worst."). Less frequent but more prominent are his forays into the maddeningly illogical, as when he refuses to understand why being a homosexual is not the same kind of risky behavior as being a cigarette smoker, or when he defends his linguistically naive statement that English is "better" than other languages. Ah, but that's all part of his peculiar charm, isn't it? --Ali Davis
Book Description
The national bestseller-now available in paperback in time for Father's Day.
Andy Rooney's weekly commentaries on 60 Minutes and his twice-weekly syndicated newspaper columns-addressing everything from deceptive cereal packaging to the existence of God-have made him America's best-known critic of the quotidian. As you might imagine, he gets a lot of letters in response to his often iconoclastic views. As you might not expect, he writes a lot of letters, too.
Now Rooney has collected the funniest, wisest, and most interesting of his letters, spanning several decades and addressing issues both momentous and trivial. He responds to complaints from viewers; he corresponds with old friends; and he writes to his children about the things he cares about most. Variously caustic, hilarious, and sage, these unfailingly entertaining letters reveal not only Rooney the iconoclast but Rooney the American Everyman. Sincerely, Andy Rooney is Andy Rooney at his best-and a wonderful gift book that will make readers chuckle and think twice.
Customer Reviews:
Contains his best paragraphs of all time.......2006-09-11
His letter about religion to his children is beautiful. It is as classic an attack on it's obsurdity as any shown by Sagan, Edison, Paine, or Mark Twain.
And his claiming patriotism and religion as two major problems in the world is prophetic.
I love that old man. What a treasure he is.
A Book of Correspondence from America's Favorite Curmudgeon.......2005-04-22
Andy Rooney is America's Grouch. He's a brilliant writer, humorist and commentator who has experienced just about everything and has little time to suffer fools gladly. Many of the letters in this book involve Rooney's response to criticism or undue demands of his time with his acid wit. It's clear that Rooney hangs up an "off duty" sign when he leaves the office and considers his private life his own and no one else's. Don't sneer -- it's not easy to write entertaining negative correspondence. Ann Coulter has consistently shown that a snarling, bitter and hateful person's rants about people she hates is as dull as plain oatmeal when it doesn't have any sense, compassion, intelligence or wit behind it. Andy Rooney's has entertained a lot of people and offended most people -- one gets the impression while reading this book that that is exactly what he sets out to do with his writings. One letter in particular -- a rant about organized religion to his children -- is refreshing during this time when phony Christians pontificate self righteously to others without practicing, or even understanding, what they preach.
However, the letters that stay with me are those positive letters that show Rooney's vulnerable side. There are many letters, for example, that show his soft spot for fellow veterans of World War II. The war was clearly the defining period in Rooney's life -- a time when he forged the majority of his lasting friendships. What's nice is that Rooney's discussions of this time in his letters aren't self-congratulatory ego pieces. They do, however, beautifully show the bond between the servicemen who fought that war and, in all likelyhood, saved democracy.
However, my favorite letter deals with longtime San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen who was a close friend of Rooney's that he wrote on the occasion of Caen's death in 1995. As a Bay Area native, I fondly remember Herb Caen's column -- a beloved staple of life in San Francisco that will never be replaced. So many tributes to the recently deceased, though well meaning, degenerate into sappy, saccharine love notes with cliches in place of real feelings. Rooney, however, instead tells of all the wonderful times he had with Caen, including a hilarious run-in with William Randolph Hearst, Jr. from whose paper, the San Francisco Examiner, Caen defected to work at the Chronicle. It's not sappy and Rooney doesn't even mention his sadness at Caen's passing until the last paragraph. But it is very touching nevertheless as it's clear that Rooney will dearly miss his old friend.
That humanity shines through and lets the reader know, in no uncertain terms, that Rooney is a compassionate and caring person who values and cherishes his friends and family. But keep that a secret ... it might ruin Andy Rooney's reputation.
Entertaining.......2004-07-28
Rooney's best book is this one. Extremely entertainng, it shows Rooney's impatience and wittiness. Although most letters serve a purpose, some letters are fluff, others are a bit boring, and some just too ridiculous. Nonetheless, we see just some of Rooney's world outside of television and his satrical commentary on government, media, viewers and people trying to sell something.
If you don't like his commentary, you'll find this collection of letters pretty similar, so you won't like this book. However if you don't regularly watch his commentary but appreciate his sense of humor, this book is definately better than his appearances on 60 minutes.
Pathetic.......2004-02-28
It's time for Rooney to ride off into the sunset. The longer he stays, the more he shows himself to be a pathetic wanna be. Goodbye Andy and don't let the door hit you in the wallet.
Sincerely, fun but not fantastic!.......2002-06-05
Mr. Rooney is always both clever, and humorous in dealing with any issue, especially those pesky little inconveniences that bother us all but which most of us choose to ignore.
In this book Mr. Rooney has collected his responses, to letters other people have written to him, and presented them to us with very little fuss or filling. Occasional he prefaces one of his letters with a note to let us know the background.
Taken as a whole, these missives make an interesting overview of his life and career. Some are extremely funny, while others make you think deeply about the odd situations we all find ourselves facing.
Mr. Rooney is at his best when he is just being cantankerous and his cunningly witty self. He is not nearly so good when he tries to vindicate his beliefs with logic or reason.
If you are a religious person, you will probably be offended by his letter to his children.
