Book Description

Bob Flanagan (1952-1997) grew up with Cystic Fibrosis (a genetically inherited, nearly-always fatal disease) and lived longer than any other person with CF. The physical pain of his childhood was alleviated by masturbation and sexual experimentation, resulting in his life-long practice of extreme masochism. In Bob Flanagan: Supermasochist, the only book in existence on this amazing individual, Flanagan reveals, in deeply confessional interviews, his life story and sexual practices, and his extraordinary relationship with his long-term partner and mistress, photographer Sheree Rose. He tells how frequent near-death encounters modified his concepts of gratification and abstinence, reward and punishment, and intensified his masochistic drive. Through his insider's perspective on the various S/M communities, we learn firsthand about branding, piercing, whipping, bondage, and endurance trials. Surprisingly, the most extreme narratives are infused with humor, honesty, and self-reflective irony. Bob's sharp intelligence and lack of pretense belie a deep commitment to deciphering philosophical issues regarding body, power, sex, life, and death.

5 out of 5 stars You will not get off on this book -- you will grow with it.......2003-04-09

For most people who do BDSM or any of its components, the motivation is fun and hot sex. For Bob Flanagan it was a way to exploit the body that was betraying him through illness and make himself as much of a master of it as he could be. Six interviews are the bulk of the book -- each accompanied with pictures from his life. This is also a brief collection of his art and an interview with his partner. Three years after this book, Bob Flanagan's body would give out and he would pass into a better world where I hope that the only "pain" he feels are those that are good for him. It is a moving and distrubing account of his struggle with illness and his attempts to make the world more aware of and accepting of others like himself.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting view of Israel.......2005-08-07

This book was written in 1986 and the author does a good job in describing Israel at that time.

One interesting question Chafets raises is this: given that anti-Semitism is irrational, ought Israelis view the Arab war against them as basically irrational or as basically a rational dispute over territory (or maybe a dispute between two competing nationalisms).

Chafets calls the first approach "emotionalist" and the second "rationalist." I think that's kind of funny. Even Chafets admits that the latter group tends to view Israel as largely to blame for Arab aggression. Is that really rational?

In my opinion, the German takeover of Czechoslovakia in the 1930s was not a battle of competing nationalisms. The Czechs had no designs on Germany. Similarly, the Israelis have no designs on Saudi Arabia, or any other Arab lands. Their crime is to want to keep their own land, and their reason is because they can't defend their rights without it.

The Arab war on Israel does not make sense as a dispute over territory either. The Arabs are land-rich! They could have had every inch of Israel, with Jewish approval, had they been willing to abide Jewish rights there. But they weren't willing to do that. Now, they want to find a way to destroy Jewish rights, and that means finding an excuse, any excuse to destroy Israel. Does that make me an "emotionalist?" Well, no. I'm just being rational. Since I'm not an Arab or Israeli, that ought to be the end of it. But I'm writing about this because I support truth and scholarship. And in this war, I've seen the opponents of Israel behave in a nearly uniform anti-scholarly and dishonest manner.

In short, the "emotionalists" are right. Those who wanted to deprive Jews of human rights did not have enough fun in the last ten or fifteen centuries. Not even World War Two was good enough to satisfy them. Now they want more, and they are happy to sacrifice academic standards, justice, and anything else that gets in their way.

Chafets does not come to this conclusion at all. Instead, he merely points out that Israeli attitudes are ambivalent. But there are a couple of places where I think what Chafets says, in all sincerity, ought to be reflected upon. For example, he says that when terrorists murdered hostages at Maalot, "the chances of Israel negotiating with Yasir Arafat ended for good."

Obviously, Israel got pressured into negotiating with Arafat anyway. And upon reflection, most of us can see that this was an error. Maybe upon further reflection, most of us can see that in the future, terrorized nations may be far less likely to negotiate with thugs such as Arafat.

I think Chafets is good at describing Israel, and he seems to give us a reasonable picture of the place. I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars An essentially accurate and sympathetic book.......2005-05-01

This is an essentially accurate and sympathetic book. Chafets for many years was a journalist at the 'Jerusalem Report' and followed what was happening in Israel very closely. He before that served as an Advisor to Prime Minister Begin. He is a writer who makes an effort to meet with people from all walks of life, escape the common cliches of the media, and provide his own special perspective.
He provides an interesting look at Israeli society as it appeared nearly two decades ago.

5 out of 5 stars Men In Hats on Paper!.......2004-11-12

I'm a big fan of Men In Hats, so of course I was excited when the book came out. With the high resolution strips printed in full color, it looks sharp. Also, there is a bonus long-form story in the back of the book, so it's more than just the strips you've seen online.

I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great comic, but why buy it?.......2004-10-09

I don't really understand why someone would want to buy a collection of web comics that they can get for free by going to the web comic's site. Perhaps to support the creator, or if it was reccomened to them and they don't have an internet connection. So, given that, I can't justify five stars.

The comics themselves, however, are hillarious... at least for those with a more cynical or just plain off-beat tastes. If you're reading this review, then you can go to the site (meninhats.com) and see if this is the comic for you.

5 out of 5 stars Technically I haven't read the book, but..........2004-07-11

I am a real fan of the webcomic. This comic relies on dialouge and interesting characters instead of flashy art. It may not be for everyone but I LOVE it. The humor is sorta like a fusion between The Farside and Calvin & Hobbes. I highly recomend that you buy this.

By the by the comic is located here: http://meninhats.com/ if you want to try before you buy. ;)

The controlled power of his writing and the originality of his thinking about criminal behavior light up Dannie Martin's latest book, an engrossing story about honor and loyalty among pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers, and thieves. On the outskirts of Fresno, California, Vernon Coy raises fighting cocks and lives on the earnings of two hard-working hookers--his wife Paula, and Curly, his older brother Weldon's ladyfriend. Curly is living with Vern and Paula while Weldon finishes a long stretch in Soledad for armed robbery. Weldon is an expert at "working the corners," maintaining prison relationships to minimize violence. One of his allies reveals that Vernon's name has been placed "in the hat," meaning that a tough prison gang called the Dirty White Boys has put out a contract on him as a suspected snitch. How the Coy brothers and their resourceful women defend themselves, aided by a memorable old con called The Stepper, is the meat of Martin's dementedly logical story.

I just discovered this book and am blown away by the story and its realism. The writing is straightforward and direct. Martin really knows how to turn a phrase.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and engrossing.......2000-04-24

Martin has been there and knows how to write about prison life and ex-cons with style and humor.

1 out of 5 stars This book is lousy and unbelievable. Martin can't write........1999-10-09

Martin writes like a third grader. his story is pointless, lacks energy, and is the product of a dull imagination. Why anyone thinks an ex-con is by nature a good storyteller is beyond me. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars "In the Hat" will NOT disappoint..........1999-10-05

Though I had enjoyed 'The Dishwasher', I had held off buying this book due to the descriptions I'd read (**-fightin'? who cares...). When I finally convinced myself to buy it, I became a total believer. Far better than his earlier works, "In the Hat" has movie material written all over it.

Raw, unremitting and expertly dealt, "In the Hat" is worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars This is about as real as it gets........1998-08-24

You want to know about prison life? This is a book that you "feel" is right about prisoners and their friends on the outside. The summary of this book does not do it justice. Dannie Martin knows how to tell a story and his characters are extremely well drawn. A great read.

    4 out of 5 stars A valuable resource.......2004-01-14

The book's primary focus is on Borsalino hats of the late 19th and 20th centuries, with a few earlier hats, foreign hats, and pith helmets included. The cowboy hat is given short shrift (on par with the coverage given to the fez), although this may be expected given the book's Italian emphasis and concentration on formal hats. Overall, the presentation is beautiful, with the excellent photographs characteristic of the Bella Cosa series. Anyone looking for design ideas will find a wealth of information here. The reason I could not give this book 5 stars is the almost total lack of information on straw hats -- the only mention is the straw boater. Given the Panama hat's place in history (and the fact that Borsalino has a line of straw hats), this is a serious omission.

      Book Description

You don't have to be involved in a play to be a Broadway enthusiast. In On Broadway, Men Still Wear Hats, the lives of some of theater's lesser known contributors are brought to light: an accountant who gave up number crunching to write Internet theater reviews full-time, an amateur photographer who went from groupie to Tony Award nominee, a Texas ballet dancer turned kosher play seller, a Glasgow high school dropout who became Broadway's favorite restauranteur. Author, journalist, and playwright Robert Simonson follows in the footsteps of Damon Runyon, Joseph Mitchell, and A.J. Liebling as he captures these and other passionate lives lived out along the edges of New York theater world's white-hot spotlight.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Theater Book.......2005-05-31

Full of telling details, this book is a gem about the theatrical milieu and its offbeat denizens. Huge amounts of warm, erudite fun for theatergoers of all kinds. And a perfect present for the theater aficianado you love! Simonson's book is highly recommended--a genuine treat.

      5 out of 5 stars Exquisite behind-the-curtain stories.......2005-04-21

Backstage sleuth Robert Simonson is a better writer than many who cover what's happening in front of the footlights. In On Broadway, Men Still Wear Hats, he steps around to the rear entrances of the theatre scene and not only plumbs the often unusual careers of publicists, designers, and columnists, but pokes around the nuts-and-bolts of wardrobe and prop creation, the resale market for old Playbills, the NY Public Library's herculean task of preserving every review they can lay hands on, and the private, frequently touching lives of ordinary vendors and suppliers who, just by being a part of the district's daily routine, seem to number among the happiest and most colorful people on the planet. As he points out in his Introduction, he wrote this book because he found these characters intensely interesting, worthier of more than the meager recognition they usually receive, and set out to correct that. He's done a beautiful--and highly readable--job. We are all richer for this off-beat labor of love.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "men\'s and boy\'s fabric hats excluding felt hats" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

Kum-Ji thought that she was willing to do anything to get closer to her favorite boy band, DDL, even if it meant that she had to join a fan club of their new rival group, Yo-i. 5 out of 5 stars A Really Fun Read.......2007-01-11

Chocolat was the first manhwa I read (I'm usually a manga person), and I'm glad I got to start off with such a great one! The Plot is simple: since she was late becoming a fan of the boy band DDL, Kum-ji was unable to join the fan club and is stuck being a 'normal' fan. So what does she do? Join the fan club of the up- and- coming band Yo-I instead. Now all she has to do is pretend to be a Yo-I fangirl while using her fanclub status(and the fact that her aunt works for Yo-I) to go to events that both Yo-I and DDL are at to try and get close to her favorite DDL member, Jin. But of course it isn't going to be that easy! Yo-I member E-soh finds out her secret and blackmails her into doing anything he says and then there's the other fanclub members jealous that she gets to be close to the band.

Chocolat was an overall great read. It was funny, cute, and holds a lot of promise for the future volumes. I also have to mention that the art was great as well. Also notable is that Ice Kunion (publisher) did a good job. I liked how the book was slightly larger and had a quality feel to it. I was also impressed with the author interviews in the back along with a preview of one of their other titles, Bring it on! If you're looking for something charming and satisfying to read, I highly recommend Chocolat. I can't wait to buy volume 2!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Korean manwha.......2005-12-30

Chocolat is a great debut title from new publisher, Ice Kunion. (Chocolat was one of the 4 initial releases.) The artwork is very appealing and the story is, well, addictive! It's hard to find an entirely original story but this is at very least a fun new twist. I didn't feel like I had seen this all before while I was reading it. I know I can't wait to get Volume 2, so I suggest you try this title!

            THE END OF THE ROAD
This delightful collection of stories from Tom Bodett's acclaimed book The End of the Road is a fictional chronicle of a small Alaska town.  Follow the romantic misadventures of sixties throwback Tamara Dupree, vegetarian activist and New Age missionary; join Stormy Storbock and Ed Flannigan on their sightseeing tour across America by fire truck; meet local ne'er-do-well Doug McDoogan, who has a bright new future in the arts.

THE LAST DECENT PARKING PLACE IN NORTH AMERICA
Listen as patrons of Clara's Coffee Cup, home of the worst--and only--coffee in town, celebrate the diner's twentieth anniversary with the gift she's most likely to reject; marvel as the new urban planner discovers the End of the Road in all its unplanned splendor and complications; and rejoice as Doug McDoogan, America's least successful entrepreneur, whittles his way to fame and fortune in the rarified World of Art.  Park your car at the End of the Road and meet the crowd of dreamers, cynics, fisherman, and loveable individualists.

THOSE GRAND OCCASIONS AT THE END OF THE ROAD
There's just no telling what will happen when the people from the End of the Road get together to make an occasion of it.  From the Rod and Gun League's East Egg Stalk, where a confirmed pacifist wins a lifetime membership in the Predator's Club, to the annual New Year's Eve fistfight between junkyard tycoon Argus Winslow and Bud Koenig, they just never know what to expect.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stories and Characters Told by a Mesmerizing Voice.......2005-03-29

Ah, delighted to see that these are still available, and that there are 2 more volumes in the edition since we first got our box set about 12 years ago (I think). Tom Bodett is an American classic, a story teller with a voice you could listen to for hours. And his characters and their adventures are as real and everyday as they are intriguing and unique.

Our two sons grew up listening to these on car trips and have memorized a lot of the narrative. We pretty much wore out the first set, and I'm ready for a new one, especially since there appear to be volumes we haven't heard yet. The only thing better would be to hear that they're out on CD.

            1 out of 5 stars Bodett's awful.......2004-02-11

Tom Bodett is dreadful. At first I thought he was just a dumbed down Garrison Keillor, but his characters and stories are mean-spirited, and Prairie Home Companion was never that. I listened as far as the "humorous" story about beating a cat to death with a broom (ho! ho!) before I threw the cassettes out.

5 out of 5 stars Life at "The End of the Road".......2001-12-14

What an excellent set of tapes!

As a displaced Alaskan myself, I can fully appreciate the characters in Bodett's books: simple, straightforward folks. People who love their freedom and value the Alaskan way of life.

But you don't have to be an Alaskan to enjoy these tapes. Bodett spins fascinating and humorous tales of smalltown Alaska that *all* can enjoy. And when the last tape is played, the listener will find themselves wanting to hear more about Stormy Storbock, Ed and Emily Flannigan, Tamara Dupree and the infamous Doug McDoogan.

Bodett's writing style is simple, yet entertaining...and when he reads his own work, as he does on these tapes, his matter-of-fact humor is showcased perfectely.

I highly recommend these tapes - they will turn your next big-city commute into a trip to Alaska!

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Series of Stories about Small Town Life.......2000-11-28

Tom Bodett narrates his own stories about fictional, colorful characters living in a small Alaskan town. The stories are simple and bring out humor and emotion. Bodett's trademark deadpan narration about the funny and unusual events that take place among the significant townspeople are so good, it almost makes a person want to pack up and head for Alaska to live with these folks. I personnally enjoy these stories very much and listen to them while I commute back and forth to work.
