This book rocked!!!!.......2001-06-21
I loved this book!!If you've seen the movie little women or read the book, this is a MUST!!. Susan Beth Pfeffer must have read and watched little women this relates to there life so much! My favorite was beths when she didnt want her birthday celebrated. It related to the book because she is shy and hated when they (her sisters) marched in with presents and gave her a kiss. If you have read this or are thinking about reading this and havent read little women or watched the movie you should. I can say that you will absoultly LOVE this book.
Portraits of Little Women - Birthday Wishes.......2000-05-02
This is a wonderful Portraits of Little Women book. It has a tenth birthday story for each girl. Meg's wish is to be alone with her parents, but is that really her birthday wish after all? Jo's wish is to become the perfect proper young lady, for her family. Beth's wish is for everyone to act as if it is any other day, but Amy wishes for Beth to have a party. Amy's wish is to have a party and invite some of her friends from school, but when Father has to have a meeting about the war does Amy still have her party? This is a great addition to any book collection or any person who likes Little Women.

For a Good Sweet Cry..........2006-03-09
I bought this book for myself 4 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. I read it and would cry and cry at the absolute sweetness of the poetry. The people who wrote these pieces totally and completely understood what I was feeling during my pregnancy -- the bliss, the aprehension, the anticipation. After I had my boy, I picked the book up again, and now a whole different section of the book made me cry. Then he turned one, and the book hit me again. Now 4 years later, I just bought the book for 3 of my friends, 2 who are pregnant, and one who has a 1-year old. They are all sobbing. They are not sad poems at all, quite the contrary. They are full of real moments of unadulterated preciousnesses, that force one to sit and fully feel the love we have for our children and for pregancy and for every little quiet personal moment. I literally cannot open the book without feeling overwhelmed with love and without needing to absolutely bury my sweet boy in kisses.
Great gift for New Parents.......2003-08-19
I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend. I gave it to my son and daughter-in-law before the birth of their first child. They were both thrilled with the book and, in turn, purchased it for a couple they knew were having a child. It is a soothing and magical must read. It is relaxing and thought provoking. It reminds us of what is truly important in this life and the great blessing we can experience with the celebration of life. It is one of those rare finds that you never tire of and with each re-read, you smile again and say "Ah, yes". Eleanor Manning, Author, Voices.
Beautiful Gift Book Captures the Richness of Babyhood.......2003-07-21
I bought this book for myself and keep buying copies for gifts-for a sister-in-law who's a new mom, for my mother, my children's pediatrician, one for my obstetrician, and additional copies for dear friends who are mothers. The book is lovely and its subject timeless--a perfect little gift.
I've come to expect a lot from June Cotner's anthologies, and the quality of writing found in BABY BLESSINGS is no exception to her other rich and delightful compilations. This one captures every stage of babyhood from every vantage point and is my favorite of all, perhaps because BABY BLESSINGS is enhanced by a particularly endearing cover, the photograph of an adorable unclothed baby with the David Beckham hair!
It's all here........2003-07-12
I didn't expect to sit down and read this book from cover to cover, but I did. I am often skeptical about books that claim to be inspiring, but I was impressed. From the poem PREGNANCY to YOU-AND-I, NURSING to NORMAL CHANGES, I was connecting with everything I cherish about being a mother. The selected poems and writings will touch every mother-to-be and serve as a heartfelt reminder to those of us who remember the early days with our babies. No matter the age of our children, the love and hope we hold for them remains and this collection is a reflection of that love and hope. I must quickly finish this review so I can re-read Baby Blessings! (p.s. Every mother - new or not-so-new - would treasure this collection.)

Fans of television's Mad About You and its star, Paul Reiser, will be delighted with his second foray into the self-deprecating self-help genre. Couplehood, his first book, leads logically to this next phase--Babyhood. In a chatty voice Reiser takes us from the "Maybe someday we'll have kids" step into the deep-sea dive of commitment.
Babyhood begins on an airplane, with Paul and wife blissfully unencumbered by children. They are seated across from the young parents (graying before his eyes) of a terrorizing 2-year-old and a screeching infant. This sobering reality manages magically to pale in a transcendent moment of the baby's bliss, uncomplicated by drool or colic, and the two decide: "Now."
Well, more or less now. First they try to get pregnant, making expeditions to the bookstore to case out the shelves of baby books; then there are the bouncy reflections on who is, after all, cut out to parent ("I don't know if, for example, Mozart actually had kids, but certainly there is no record of him ever leaving the office early to coach Peewee Soccer League"). Later comes the account of sibling rivalry between the newborn and the family dog, and why women make better moms than men. Babyhood manages to provoke thought about the important questions of when and why to have children, many of which are answered in the book's endearing details.
Book Description
I'm going to be totally honest. This is not the kind of book that can help you. It's not a "how-to," "when-to," a "what-to-expect" book. It's not even endorsed by anyone remotely connected to the medical profession. (Although a cousin of mine who sells carpeting to doctors' offices not only found it "insightful" and "informative," but felt that, "if properly vacuumed, it should last a lifetime.")
"A fine endorsement," you say. "But if I have only one book to buy, shouldn't I go for the helpful one?"
Let's compare:
Those "know-it-all" books tell you how to have a happy, healthy pregnancy.
My book mentions a squirrel.
Those books tell you how to care for a newborn child.
My book describes how tired I am.
Those books give you essential information you can use in a life-threatening emergency.
My book has some very amusing anecdotes about poop.
So really, it's up to you. If you want to be prepared and well-informed, I understand. But if you enjoy seeing the words "pterodactyl" and "uterus" in the same book, you've come to the right place.

Laugh Out Loud Funny Every Time .......2007-02-11
I've read this book a dozen times and every time I laugh out loud. I buy it for all my friends as soon as a due date is announced. Whether Paul Reiser is writing about baby names, cloth vs. disposable diapers, or going out on his own with the baby for the first time, it's all funny. Yes, the book is a few years old, but it is still my favorite parenting book.
Great gift for new dads.......2005-08-27
I happen to love Paul Reiser. I think he's hilarious! I really enjoyed this book and I don't even have kids. If you would like to get a Father's Day gift for a new dad or if you happen to know a man who's about to become a dad then I would definitely recommend purchasing the AUDIOBOOK version of this. Most men don't have the patience to read so I could see them enjoying the effortless listening aspect of the audio version. I read the print version and I really liked it. Paul talks about the decision to have a child and the whole pregnancy journey from the male perspective. Let's face it, there are lots of books written for women on the subject and this is probably the only one I have ever seen written for men by a man. Women will enjoy reading too b/c I think it gives some insider perspective as to how a man views having a baby.
Funny for all new parents!.......2005-07-12
Any new dad would appreciate the humor in this book... gives the father another point of view and funny things to look forward to... All new parents would get a kick out of it! :)
So funny I couldn't breathe.......2005-05-10
I first read this when I was 14, I've always been interested in mommyhood. There was this one part where he write about dressing his baby... I laughed for about 15 minutes straight, and I just could not stop. This book is so refreshing and maddeningly funny. I can read this over and over. An absolute favorite.
Such a cute book!.......2005-02-10
I was having some kind of post-partum anxiety or something - really stressed and worried, etc. A friend had given me this book and I began reading it each day. It was so cute and funny and something any new parent can relate to. I felt like Paul Reiser was my friend - he seems to be such a nice guy! Anyway, this light reading was a welcome change from the 100 baby care books that I was obscessing over. I was so afraid of doing something wrong! Well, my baby is doing fine and almost a year old now! And I look forward to reading this cute little book again sometime. I would also love to give it as a gift.

Thoughtful insights into how babies develop.......2006-08-17
This book enriched my experience of my first child's early months by making me more aware of all the changes she was going through, and how incredible even tiny new developments are -- such as learning to move her arms and legs intentionally. The book was first published in the 1970s and this is a revised edition from the early 1980s, but in many ways it feels more modern and sensible than many of the books on babies which are most popular today. It addresses the issues of babies' individual personalities and how this can affect how they develop -- a subject which more practical, but less well-informed baby manuals don't even acknowledge.

Wordy Rambler.......2006-02-23
While Penelope Leach's other book was refreshing with new common sense insights onto my little one's behavior, this book is much to wordy. I suspect it was written as a PhD thesis as it reads about as exciting as one. It is very wordy and seems to ramble. I lose interest long before I discover any new useful info.
The only book which discusses real evidence.......2005-12-23
The only thing this book left me wishing for - is that that there was anything remotely similar to it today. The book is not written in an easy "a-to-z" or "month-by-month" or any other format for people who don't like to read. It is a textbook... on babies, the only one I have found.
With all the controversial advice out there, all I wanted was to understand WHERE it came from, WHY we believe this or that, WHAT the evidence suggests. This book answers these questions as adequately as the research conducted by the 1980's allows it.
There are many books which are easier to read, will give you more step-by-step cookbook advice, and are a reference on the brands of food and strollers. So though this book lacks in all of those areas, it is the only one which can be used as a pure source of knowledge about the baby's development.
More academic than I expected.......2003-06-04
Everything that is written in support of this book is true. It's thorough, interesting, etc. The only drawback is that it is very academic as well. Leach is a psychologist and writes at length of the nuts and bolts of animal behavioral studies that are interesting to researchers, but what I want is the conclusions of those studies and more of a how-to manual. I recommend Magda Gerber's books for that approach.
