Once I saw that there was a Velantian in this, from E. E. Doc Smith's Lensman series, I was sold, and had to get it. Done as a page by page look at each species the artwork is excellent, and these are the sort of funny looking monster types that kids like too, so it can work on more than one level, most definitely.

Good book. I have owned this since I was a child. It was a great portal into many of these classic Sci Fi books as I would have never heard about them otherwise. Barlowe has a fantastic nack for bringing life to these aliens. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars From the author of Tales of Ancient Xenar.......2005-11-08

I enjoy art books, mainly books of fantasy art. But this book is more a sci-fi art book, and a very good one at that. Mr. Barlowe did a excellent job with the illustrations in this book. I read H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness." I had a hard time visualizing the Old ones described in that novelette. But Mr. Barlowe helped me greatly by including them in this volume and even summarizing their history. I would love to see how Mr. Barlowe would visualize all the creatures in my book, Tales of Ancient Xenar. I know he has a fantasy art book and I hope to see that one very soon. And to be honest, the only thing I am disappointed about is the fact Amazon.com ony allows a max of 5 stars. This book deserve well more than that.

5 out of 5 stars High five.......2004-04-21

I love, love, love this book. I got this book about 10 years ago, and it brought my imagination to life, and what an imagination. When there is something stressful going on in my life I pull out this book and just drift into another world.

The descriptions are so vivid, the pictures just come to life. I just wish there were pictures of Arthur C Clark's novels.

5 out of 5 stars Just what the title says..........2004-04-04

A book on great alien races from science fiction. Classic fiction to boot. Most of us know about the Overlords from 'Childhood's End', the Puppeteers from 'Ringworld', the Guild Steersman from 'Dune' and even the Old Ones from 'At the Mountains of Madness'. But do you remember the Thrint from 'World of Ptavvs', the Cinruss from 'Hospital Station', or the Cygnan from 'The Jupiter Theft'?
A great source of information on alien races with full color pictures, lots of data on history, culture and habitat BUT also a great source for finding classic stories you never heard of!
Do you know the Pnume, Salaman, Triped or Merseian? Well, get this book and found out who they are!

Book Description

In his classic Guide to Extraterrestials, Wayne Douglas Barlowe brought us science fiction's greatest aliens. Now he does the same for the bizarre and beautiful beings of a thousand years of fantasy and horror.

Here is the Unicorn, still shimmering from the imagination of The Last Unicorn author Peter S. Beagle. Here in all its disgusting glory lurks H. P. Lovecraft's Gug, along with Robert Jordan's Trolloc. Here you will meet Marion Zimmer Bradley's Morgaine from The Mists of Avalon, Conan-creator Robert E. Howard's Bran Mak Morn, Clive Barker's Gek AGek, Drool Rockworm from Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, and many wondrous more.

Fifty fantastic creatures in all. Awesome, incredible, startling, disturbing, these creatures are all rendered with exquisite accuracy and excruciating detail. Barlowe's Guide to Fantasy is the essential companion for anyone who has ever been thrilled by the terrifying and wonderful creatures found in fantastic literature, and wished to see them brought to life by a modern master.

5 out of 5 stars A Primer for the Serious sf art fan.......2003-01-22

Wayne Barlowe kicks butt, plain and simple. In this book, he takes a wide variety of classic and sometimes overlooked aliens and nearly allows them to walk off the edge of his pages (for an especially creepy example, check out The Ting from John W. Campbell's "Who Goes There?"-- not exactly like either James Arness' or John Carpenter's versions, but possibly more disturbing for its faithfulness to the original).
The accompanying text for each subject describes planet of origin, habits, culture (if any), biology, etc. Since Barlowe is obviously a fan, he avoids the dry, dusty words of the average ordinary critic, making the aliens more solid than mere paint can do alone.
Another benefit of the book is its inclusion of authors and book/story titles, which allow the reader to hunt down and capture the books for further reading (some are, alas, out of print).

Get this book. NOW.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2000-03-30

Intricate, detailed, well-drawn images of various persons and creatures fill the pages of this incredible work. However, the text is rather slim for some of the latter entries, and I must say that I question the artist's choice of subjects - few creatures in here are truly alien, and far too many are simply human! Nevertheless, unlike some of the other artists, Barlowe manages to offer images which do not disrupt our own imagined images of the characters, but merely improve and clarify them.

5 out of 5 stars "The incredible artwork, the detail...the man's a genius.".......1999-05-24

The Guide to Fantasy by Wayne Barlowe is a superb look into the minds of authors and one man's ideas of what the character looks like. Full-color illustrations really capture your eyes. I'm in awe of the man.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not as great..........1998-10-13

I anticipated the publishing of this book as I have few others. Any companion volume to Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials would have to be a plus, right? Well, sort of. The selection of characters is very diverse, but the paintings look very rushed, and incomplete in some cases. Furthermore the text is not very descriptive of the characters. It's more like reading a synopsis of the novels than information about that particular entry. Definitely not as inspired as Barlowe's previous work, but it's wonderful, nonetheless. I wish I could give it 9 on a 10 scale.

5 out of 5 stars Fasinating!.......1997-09-01

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read, it introduced me to new titles I've never heard of. I can't wait to see his guide to Extra -terrestrials.

              Book Description

Victorian to Vamp: Women's Clothing 1900-1929 covers styles from the turn of the century until the Great Depression. A predominant ideal silhouette marked each of these three decades from the S-shaped Gibson Bend in Edwardian times to the long, slender, upright lines of dresses in the Teens and finally to the boyish flat-chested look of flappers' short chemises in the Twenties. Learn about: clothing styles of three decades, how women accessorized their wardrobes, the influence that women's participation in sports had on their dress, why some women advocated dress reform, how designers Paul Poiret and Coco Chanel affected women's fashions. The book is illustrated entirely with period drawings and photographs of the time.

              2 out of 5 stars a "don't buy".......2003-05-01

I had read several encouraging reviews and decided to purchase this book; and unfortunately, I feel that I wasted my money.

On the plus side, while the author says nothing new, she does a good job of going over social and fashion trends of the time; I will give her credit for a decent job of writing and research.

But for me, as for other vintage fashion enthusiasts, any book on historical garments must include lots, and I mean lots, of great illustrations, whether photographs or reprints from contemporary periodicals and catalogs. This is where "Victorian to Vamp" falls disappointingly short.

The reprints are of indifferent quality, a couple of them quite crude (the author couldn't get her hands on a better picture of Amelia Jenks Bloomer? Come on!). And for a book of this type, why oh why couldn't the editors have sprung for a couple of prints in color?

If the author would care to reissue this with the help of a better photo/print researcher, I might be tempted to revise my opinion.

              2 out of 5 stars Feeble.......2002-02-10

As a fan of these three eras in fashion, I had high hopes for this book, but the front cover is the best thing about it. The most grievous problem with this book is that, focussing as it does on such a limited time span, it should go into depth about that time span. It does not. The descriptions of fashions of the eras are too generalized and don't indicate how and when changes within the eras took place; since fashion was changing pretty rapidly by the end of the 19th century, and certainly by the beginning of the 20th, I expected much more attention to chronology and gradual changes.

The illustrations are also scanty and often of poor quality; some look as though they were made by tracing the outline of another illustration. I could have forgiven the shortcomings of the text had this book provided lots of illustrations, which is the main reason I suspect many of us buy books on fashion history. This book has a great premise, but it is very unhelpful.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for women's fashion enthusiasts........2000-03-04

Victorian To Vamp: Women's Clothing 1900-1929 explores the evolving dress styles of women from 1900 until the Great Depression, a time when the oppressive and constrictive styles of the Victorian Era were giving way to a new freedom in women's clothing with the advent of the modern short skirt and loose chemise dresses. Paula Darnell's informative text is illustrated throughout with line drawings and black/white photography. Victorian To Vamp will prove valued and engaging reading for costumers, popular culture historians, and writers seeking accuracy respecting details of women's clothing styles and trends during the first three decades of the nineteenth century.

The word's on the street that a new crime syndicate is moving into Chicago in full force, pushing a new drug called Kerasine 2. These new thugs are tearing through the cops and the competition like they were made of wet paper. But the beautiful bounty hunter Rally Vincent knows who's behind it all: her arch-enemy, the ultra-hitwoman Goldie, back to make good on her promise to make Rally her personal slave - or a stiff in the morgue!

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars Character development.......2003-02-01

In Mister V, the second to last Gunsmith Cats book, Kenichi Sonoda seems to have exhausted the last of the innovative action sequences that have been the series' trademark. With few exceptions, the action in this, the heftiest volume in the series, is brief, less creative, and less exciting than it has been before. However, Sonoda still has a couple of tricks up his sleeve which make Rally's last big mission worth reading.

One ace is the return of lesbian dominatrix mob-woman Goldie, the toughest, most appropriate nemesis in the GSC rogues' gallery, for one more attempt at enslaving Rally. I hesitate to mention the other major element, because it's a slight spoiler, but suffice to say it ties in to Rally's backstory (revealed in Kidnapped), and represents one of the toughest *emotional* challenges Rally has faced yet. Gunsmith Cats may have peaked action-wise in Bean Bandit, but its dramatic arc peaks here, and any reader who has grown to love Rally as a character will want to see this story.

By now, Gunsmith Cats has amassed a large, even unwieldy, supporting cast, including Ken, Misty, Becky, Bean Bandit, Roy, Roy's partner, and of course, Minnie-May, whose once co-starring role seems to have been downgraded to just another member of an ever-growing team. They all get their moments here, and the extensive scenes of strategizing and teamworking are one of the elements that tend to slow the story down. As such, long sequences seem to be made up of Rally conspiring with her team, and others consist of cutting to each person as they act out their role in the plan. Yet all of them serve a useful role in defeating the villain. Their presence contributes to the pleasant familial atmosphere that extends the themes from Kidnapped and creates a sense of growth in Rally's character. Without her extended family, she wouldn't be able to take on Goldie, and the strength she has gained in her friendships is what allows her to prevail.

In an unexpected twist, it is character development, not action, which takes center stage as Gunsmith Cats approaches its coda. Even Goldie is given surprising depth in a flashback which fleshes out her character. This volume may not deliver as much of the hard-hitting action that makes readers fall in love with the series, but it retroactively gives the preceding stories an emotional core to go along with the gleeful T&A and fetishistic violence.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and Theology Collide.......2003-08-21

If you have a love for theology and humor this book is for you. Taking some of the leading theological terms and groups of today, the two authors of this book have written a brief but humorous biography/history about each, portraying them as earthly animals within our earthy kingdom. Very witty but also very informative. J.I. Packer had this to say about it,"If you doubt whether many a true word is spoken in jest, this book will lay your doubts to rest. To see how the jokes match the theologies that produced them is truely laughable." This is a great book to relax to.
