Dior.......2005-04-24
Francoise Giroud's book about Christian Dior is one of the best studies of the great couturier and his fashion house. The text is highly informative and there are plentiful illustrations and photos (color and black and white) of Dior's creations, clients, friends, homes, etc, in short everything that was part of his life. There is also information about the designers who worked for the house after Dior's death, Yves Saint-Laurent and Marc Bohan.
What I didn't like about the book is that there are a number of close up photos of gowns. Close ups are great so that one can see the details, but they're pretty useless if not accompanied by a full length view of the garment.

Provides the inside story at the House of Dior.......2002-08-06
Christian Dior: The Early Years provides the inside story at the House of Dior, from its introduction of the 'New Look' to 1957, upon Dior's sudden death. When Christian Dior presented his first collection, the young designer presented clothing which featured narrow waists and beautiful evening dresses: a new look for the fashion world of the mid1940s. He drew each dress himself and his designs would change the fashion world of his times. The oversized presentation of this volume allows for fullpage displays of his works accompanying a biography of his life and achievements.
A MEMORABLE VISIT WITH DIOR.......2002-06-12
Born in a small village in Normandy, Christian Dior did not hesitate to disobey a parental injunction to undertake a "serious occupation." He knew what he wanted and fled to Paris where he became a designer at Robert Piguet.
The City of Lights was gray in 1946; there had been the war, German occupation, and rationing. But, luck was with Dior. He met the country's richest and most powerful industrialist, Marcel Boussac, who offered to back the young designer. Space became available at 28-30 Avenue Montaigne, an address well known to fashion aficionados today.
In 1947 Dior introduced his first collection, and the world was ready for his innovative return to the feminine figure with narrow waists, long skirts, and an attractive bustline. The rest, as they say, is history.
All interested in the world of fashion will delight in this detailed history of the workings of Dior's fashion house, and the remarkable people who worked for him in developing a boutique and perfume which would enjoy worldwide acclaim. Also included are stories of his famous clients, such as Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman, and the Duchess of Windsor.
Enriched with some 100 illustrations this keepsake volume concludes with "Monsieur Dior's Fashion Vocabulary" and a timeline noting events after Dior's death in 1957 to the present day.

World-class achievements in clothing & style.......2002-04-12
Christian Dior: The Early Years 1947-1957 by Esmeralda de Rethy (daughter of Princess Liliane of Belgium who was one of Christian Dior's very first clients) and fashion historian Jean-Louis Perreau is an incredible, superbly illustrated and informative coffee table book providing a vivid fashion record perfectly capturing the founding of an empire of style in the post-World War II decade. Full-page photographs, some color, some black and white, many nearly half a century old, adorn the pages along with Dior's original sketches and commentary. The text traces the travails, efforts, and world-class achievements in clothing, style, and love of life in this high society treasury. Christian Dior is very highly recommended reading for students of 20th Century fashion history in general, and the influential contributions of Christian Dior in particular.
Customer Reviews:
Extravagantly beautiful, but pretentious text.......2006-01-09
The photographs of Christian Dior's magnificent creations are breathtaking. But the writing is unbearably pretentious. Unfortunately, this characteristic is a hallmark of most academic writing. But get the book anyway. Dior was an artist, a seeker of Beauty, and we're all the richer for it.
Treats Dior's work with the reverence it deserves..........2001-12-04
Focuses on the romance and idealism of the artist and his art rather than just functioning as a clinical review of his work... as of this review date, new hardcover copies are still available from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Online Store. I've purchased two.
Magnificent! A must have!.......2001-05-17
This book is gorgeous--fabulous photography, lots of detailed shots (I love the way they concentrate on the dresses and don't feel obliged to get the manniquin's head in every shot)--glorious! Get this book now!
An Exquisite Album of Christian Dior's Work.......1997-07-12
This is a portrait album of a sampling of Christian Dior's masterpieces shown in the 1996 New York Metropolitain Museum of Art's retrospective. Every garment is beautifully captured. The detail photographs are exceptional.
But this is more than just a picture book about the 11 years Dior designed under his own name. The text offers a balance of historical costume references that Dior used in his creations against the social and economic era he designed in. It is both interesting and informative--two words that usually don't co-exist in most fashion references.
As a coffee-table book, this is a must-have for fashion afficianados. For those who can visualize and appreciate the complexity of drape and construction in some of the garments, there is no excuse not to own this book
Book Description
A look at the career and impact made on the fashion world from his first collection presented in 1947.
Customer Reviews:
Simply gorgeous.......2007-06-14
This huge, high-quality softbound volume is, in brief, a most fitting tribute to the great Christian Dior on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. The book is filled with superb full-page photography, mostly in black and white, of everything Dior, from his gowns to his accessories to his atelier in Paris and his fashion shows. As the book's title implies, the focus is on Dior's connections with Germany in his great years, 1947-1957. Several of the photographs feature the immortal Berliner Marlene Dietrich in Dior creations. Altogether a wonderful book!

First published in 1993 in France, this English translation of Marie-France Pochna's biography of Christian Dior appears in time for the 50th anniversary of Dior's debut in the world of fashion and coincides with a retrospective of Dior's design work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a biography of the designer, Pochna's book is complete and telling, perhaps not swept up high enough in the airy realms of fashion to please devoted couture mavens but highly informative and interesting for general readers interested in Dior and his impact on the fashion industry. The business of fashion rather than the artistry of Dior's designs is where Pochna directs much of her attention. After all, the marketing and branding that Dior helped initiate was innovative, so discussions of licensing agreements and the development of designer accessories, along with Dior's youthful development and inspirations, blend into a provocative profile of this fashion great.

DIOR.......2006-04-16
Ah, the great Dior, by which all other 20th century designers measured themselves against; from Yves St. Laurant to Coco Chanel, they all viewed Dior as the master. Even today his name is synonymous with style and elegance. This book is thorough and well written, Dior was a fascinating man and he is really fleshed out here. Very good book on a singular talent.
The Best Book on Fashion I have ever read.......2000-03-27
This book opened the world of fashion to me in an intelligent and amusing way. Read it!

A Must-Read for Fans of Vintage Dior.......2001-11-08
I adore vintage clothing. I collect it, wear it, and recently co-authored a book about it. So, as you'd imagine, I'm always interested in books about my favorite subject. Dior in Vogue, by Brigid Keenan, reminded me why I love these beautiful old dresses so much. When the book arrived in the mail, this Florida girl sat in her hot car (small, black) and spent the next twenty minutes gazing at pictures of Msr.Dior's exquisite creations, the majority of which--in this book, anyway--were coats and evening dresses (small, black); as I turned the pages, I longed to be walking in mid-century New York or Paris, feeling the chill wind of autumn swishing my fabulous New Look skirts. Politically incorrect smoke would curl upward from my ebony cigarette holder.
The photography is plentiful and inspiring, and the history of the great House of Dior is compelling reading for any fashionphile, especially if she loves the styles of the past as much as I do. What a wonderful book.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2006-06-02
I expected this book to be filled with wonderful, vivid pictures and I was a bit let down. There are only 79 pages and they are no captions to explain the pictures at all! There is no organization, it seems like the author just threw in pictures with her eyes closed. They are mixed with the past Dior and the present Dior with John Galliano. For example, there is a picture of Galliano in the middle of the book and then, a few pages later, there is a B&W picture of a 1950's model in Dior. I know that the picture was from the 1950's because I've seen it before. There are no dates on any of the pictures.
If you really enjoy Dior then you should get this book but it's very small in shape and after you look at it once, you can put it away.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04
A young bloke has a destiny to be a hero type, complete with tiger warrior companion and babe pirate type to look after his amulet of power.
Throw in a turtle wizard, an evil dark lord kid, some opposition bad guy warrior types, and some hilarious frog soldiers, and you have a aimed at the young audience fantasy adventure that isn't too bad.
Even has dragons, griffins and frog shadow ninja.
Great comic.......2002-12-22
This is a great comic. I stumbled over it when I was searching my local comic bookstore, since I was pretty dissatisfied with the irregularity with which Battle Chasers was released. The cover really appealed to me, being a fantasy fan, so I took it home and read it and immediately I loved it and I went back to the store to get all the other parts. The drawing are good and the inking is AWESOME. The story is maybe not so complex but it sure is a fun read. I know many people comment on this comic as it being too simple but that's only a strong point, since there are already so much 'heavy' comics out there (by the way, it's not THAT simple). Along with Bone and Battle Chasers the best comic ever.
Amazing!.......2002-02-22
Simply one of the coolest most inventive fantasy series of recent years If not of all time. This is why we all started to read comics. Check it out. Make sure you pick up a copy of volume 2 as well. It doesn't get any better than this.
Beautiful.......2001-11-12
Not to be one of those people that spouts benedictions about this book from everywhere, but this is a truly amazing book. The artwork, and especially the coloring is stunning. The story is nicely paced with action and suspense, along with ammusing little plot twists thrown in. Seeing as this is only the first half of the entire TELLOS run, it'll make you want to run out and buy the next one to see the end of the saga. Its fantasy elements make the strangest things possible and believable. This is the kind of story telling that I've ever read comics for.
A Healthy Alternative.......2001-05-01
This comic is an excellent to any collection. The story is fun and imaginative and the artwork is amazing. I cannot help but be astounded by the vibrant colors that are used in this book. Anyone that wants to read a fun comic about bipedal animals with swords and magic (without the busty "babes") should really check out this TPB.

"Booger." In case you're wondering, that's the title of a winning entry from a parody contest that Dave Barry's flagship paper, the Miami Herald, ran in 1989. There's more to Dave Barry than "boogers," of course--he's the McDonald's of American humor. One, nearly everybody likes him. Two, he's everywhere. Three--and this is the key--when you open one of his books, you know exactly what you're going to get: "Eugene is located in southwest Oregon, approximately 278 billion miles from anything." "If you're looking for a hearty entree that (1) is related to spiders; (2) is descended from a worm; and (3) has mutant baby-poopers walking around on its lips; then you definitely want a lobster." This collection of columns--sure to serve billions and billions--is called Dave Barry Is from Mars and Venus. (Strangely, it isn't a parody of John Gray's series, even though there's nobody better equipped to do one.) Inside you'll find the same genial, absurd fantasies, riffs on clippings that Barry insists he is not making up, and bizarre personal adventures that are his trademark. Do you like hamburgers? Of course--and you'll like this book, too.
Book Description
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, bestselling author, and Wheel of Fortune contestant Dave Barry exposes the shattering truth. Whether he's splashing with the U.S. sychronized swim team ("Picture a bunch of elegant swans swimming with a flailing sea cow") or reliving the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving ("We've decided to obliterate your culture, but first may we try the stuffing?"), Dave Barry proves that one man can make a difference--by having the guts to answer the questions few people bother to ask:
¸ What makes people want to eat animals they would never consider petting?
¸ Where do the World's Three Most Boring People meet?
¸ Why is Colorado freezing so many human gonads?
¸ And just how does Oprah have the power to turn a 1957 Hotpoint toaster manual into a #1 bestseller?
Customer Reviews:
Not His Best Collection.......2006-08-29
Whilst From Mars and Venus certainly isn't Barry's best work it is not at the bottom of the list either. Published in 1997 it is rather dated in parts but a lot of the topics are still extremely relevant today. Barry has included photographs as well in this book which he doesn't always do, which are quite funny. In From Mars and Venus Barry covers topics such as synchronised swimming, laser tag, gravity, fashion tips for men, snowmobiles, snowboarding, dog sledding, Wheel of Fortune, Harley Davidson jerks, Classical Music, playing the part of a corpse in an Opera, Hilary Clinton asking him to lunch then declining because he wouldn't do it off the record, going on Oprah, annoying commercials and Florida drivers to name just a few. Definitely check out other non fiction collections such as Boogers are My Beat as well as his sensational fiction novels especially Tricky Business.
Another Work of Pure Genius!.......2005-08-25
This book is one of Dave Barry's best books ever. It has a multitude of really good columns in it, and my favorites are as follows:
"Warp Speed"--wherein Dave Barry discusses flying (and puking) in a fighter jet.
"The Avenging Death Killer of Doom"--wherein Dave Barry discusses playing laser tag.
"Saving Face"--wherein Dave Barry discusses laser tag again; this time regarding getting hit in the face with a laser gun.
"Brain Sludge"--wherein Dave Barry discusses how no one can remember the names of all the Supreme Court justices, but they can remember all the words to the "Robin Hood" TV show theme song from the 1950's.
"The Cigar Avenger"--wherein Dave Barry discusses getting the World's Best Water Gun and using it in a superherolike fashion.
and
"One Potato, Two Potato..."--wherein Dave Barry discusses firing a potato cannon.
For those of you unfamiliar with Dave Barry's work, this book is hilarious and you desperately need to get it out of the library, at the very least.
And as for those of you familiar with Dave Barry's work, if you've read his previous works and liked them, then you also really need to read this one.
Most laugh-out-loud moments of the recent Barry.......2005-07-08
This book gave me the most laugh-out-loud moments I can remember from a Barry book.
Some of my favorite columns in this one include "Speed Trap," regarding the abolishment of the national pretend speed limit of 55 miles per hour. Another is "Eureka!," regarding the invention of "buffalo-style" wings, which means (according to Barry) "to people who have been drinking beer." He theorizes that buffalo wings are the same bones over and over, run through the dishwasher before being re-served to customers.
Funny stuff, nothing new .......2005-04-13
This is a compilation of newspaper columns published by accomplished humorist Dave Barry. Barry's whose sarcastic and colorful brand of humor, coupled with a creative and liberal use of capital letters and punctuation and a tendency to flit from topic to topic, neatly anticipated the internet generation by several years.
Barry is funny, and I'm happy to say that his material ages very well. While he is often commenting on the story of the day, his emphasis is on the humor rather than the facts, and the humor still works (check in again in twenty years to see if that's still so).
I'm not sure whether I really recommend this, because it offers nothing (beyond an introduction) original. On the one hand, a fan of Barry could scour the internet and download all of his columns to save himself the purchase price. But on the other hand, Barry would probably prefer that you generate some extra royalties by buying the book.
