      Book Description

The work of Alois Riegl (1858-1905) has been highly influential in art history of the modern age. Riegl, the most important member of the so-called Vienna School, developed a refined technique of visual or formal analysis that departed from the iconological method, which emphasized decoding motifs through recourse to texts. Riegl also pioneered understanding of the changing role of the viewer, the significance of non-high art objects (or what would now be called visual or material culture), and theories of art and art history, including his much-debated neologism Kunstwollen (the will of art). His major works include Foundations for a History of Ornament, Late Roman Art Industry, and The Group Portraiture of Holland. Riegl's Historical Grammar of the Visual Arts, which brings together the diverse threads of his thought, is now available to an English-language audience, in a masterful translation by Jacqueline E. Jung. In one of the earliest and perhaps the most brilliant of all art historical surveys, Riegl addresses the different visual arts within a sweeping conception of the history of culture. His account derives from Hegelian models but decisively opens onto alternative pathways that continue to complicate attempts to reduce art merely to the artist's intentions or its social and historical functions.

5 out of 5 stars study of history as inhering in surfaces of objects.......2006-04-02

Walter Benjamin, the major 20th-century cultural critic, wrote that Alois Riegl was a scholar "who penetrates so far into the historical conditions that he is able to trace the curve of their heartbeat as the line of their forms." It was in the disturbing, pre-World War I conditions of fin-de-siecle Vienna which also affected the ideas of the geniuses Freud and Wittgenstein and the art of Klimt that Riegl came to his insights that "historical context is not a 'container' of objects and events" giving them their distinctive, "historical," quality or identification, but such context rather is a "set of nonexclusive correlates emerging from the artifacts [of a particular time] themselves." This original cultural analysis is reflected in the concept of the "loss of context" and the relatively new subject of "material culture" which are parts of today's postmodernism. Riegl is recognized as one of the founders of the modern discipline of art history. This work--one of only a handful of book-length studies on this important latter nineteenth century thinker--began as a dissertation based on research in Austrian archives. Although Riegl is the primary subject, Gubser analyzes the work in the areas of history, aesthetics, and art history of contemporaries of Riegl's to draw the matrix in which Riegl's ideas were formed and convey the intellectual ambiance and interests of fin-de-siecle Vienna. Advanced students of modernism and postmodernism especially will find the book elucidating on central, formative ideas and developments in these periods.

        Book Description

Alois Riegl (1858-1905) was one of the founders of art history as a discipline. This is the first general introduction to the work of the celebrated Austrian who brought complex philosophical considerations to bear on art and its history. Ranging easily over diverse fields and among a large group of thinkers, Margaret Iversen establishes Riegl's relevance to recent critical thinking while clearly delineating his extraordinary critical powers.

Iversen contextualizes Riegl's thought among the wider cultural crosscurrents of his time, pointing for example to his denunciation of the sub-Semperians and his profound influence on Walter Benjamin. She is equally concerned to relate Riegl's work to contemporary theoretical interests, arguing that he pioneered an approach to art history that took into consideration the role of the spectator. She devotes a chapter to Riegl's theory of spectator/depiction relationships, comparing it with more recent writing on the subject by commentators like Fried, Foucault, and others.

In a sympathetic reading of Riegl, Iversen interprets his theory of Kunstwollen or artistic volition, as a concept that ran counter to narrowly empiricist and determinist histories of art that were dominant in his time. She provides extended critical commentary on his most important works, Questions of Style, Late Roman Art Industry, and The Dutch Group Portrait, enriched by explorations of the theoretical background of his systematic art history, including the work of Kant, Hegel, Herbart, and Hildebrand. Iversen also details Erwin Panofsky's early response to Riegl, arguing that Panofsky's search for an authoritative viewpoint collapsed Riegl's multiple typology of style into an art history constructed around a single aesthetic norm.

Margaret Iversen is Lecturer at the University of Essex, Colchester, England.

          Book Description

Written at the height of the arts and crafts movement in fin-de-sicle Vienna, Alois Riegl's Stilfragen represented a turning point in defining art and understanding the sources of its inspiration. Demonstrating an uninterrupted continuity in the history of ornament from the ancient Egyptian through the Islamic period, Riegl argued that the creative urge manifests itself in both "great art" and the most humble artifact, and that change is an inherent part of style. This new translation, which renders Riegl's seminal work in contemporary, readable prose, allows for a fresh reexamination of his thought in light of current revisionist debate. His discovery of infinite variation in the restatement of several decorative motifs--the palmette, rosette, tendril--led Riegl to believe that art is completely independent from exterior conditions and is beyond individual volition. This thinking laid the groundwork for his famous concept of Kunstwollen, or artistic intention. "Something that the translation will, I hope, convey, is the passion invested in Riegl's enterprise. We are made to feel that the issues he discussed mattered vitally to him; it was the very nature of art and its relation to human life that were at stake, art as an absolute necessity."--From the preface by Henri Zerner

5 out of 5 stars The story is building and the climax is soon..........2003-04-15

This continues the new storyline hinted at in Book 4, and it will be concluded in book 6. That doesn't leave much room for storytelling, but the ladies of CLAMP manage to put down a compelling, truly magnificent story in just these three books, which are entirely separate from the first three books. The characters are wonderful and the art is stunning. I own all of the Rayearth books and have even worn out copies, I've looked at them so much!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful well written and drawn manga.......2002-06-12

Magic Knight Rayearth is probably one of CLAMP's best books. It's funny, has a wonderful plot, and the pictures are truly beautiful. The book is a perfect example of a manga (comic book) for girls, but guys and anyone of any age will enjoy the manga. Anyone who wants to read a good manga book or series Magic Knight Rayearth would be the best one to read.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Knight Rayearth is the best!.......2002-01-29

Magic Knight Rayearth is one of the mangas I've ever read! The art is totally amazing! It's funny, cute, and (though I'm a girl) guys can read it, too!
It's about three girls, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. They are suddenly sucked from earth and land in a strange world called, Cephiro. Then they are told to become Magic Knights and save Cephiro. (I'm very, very, bad at summarizing. Sorry!)
That's all I'm going to tell you! Believe me, this series is one of the best I've ever read!

2 out of 5 stars Nice artwork, but annoying characters.......2001-10-04

Clamp does beautiful artwork in this series as well as X/1999. In fact, the artwork was what persuaded me to buy this manga without having read the storyline. Bad move! It's not that the story is bad... it's just that the main characters are extremely formulaic and lacking in depth. The fact that one of them was a crybaby didn't help. If you're looking for a story that is going to draw you in and intrigue you until the last page, then this isn't right for you. You're better off checking out Inu Yasha or Sanctuary.

                  Book Description

Written with the same acerbic wit and infectious humor that has made P. J. O'Rourke one of the most popular political satirists of all time, The Enemies List will keep you howling and his enemies scowling. From Noam Chomsky to Yoko Ono, from Peter, Paul, and Mary (yes, they're still alive) to all the people who think quartz crystals cure herpes, from Ralph Nader to the entire country of Sweden, P. J. O'Rourke has created a roster of the most useless, politically disgraceful, and downright foolish people around. Although a rating system of S=Silly, VS=Very Silly, SML=Shirley MacLaine was ultimately cast aside, the distinguishing feature of the cluster of dunces presented here is silliness, not political subversion. The Enemies List began as an article in the American Spectator and, as readers contributed their own suggestions, quickly grew into a hilarious and slashing commentary on politicians and celebrities alike. Now they have been named, we just need to figure out what to do with them. "To say that P. J. O'Rourke is funny is like saying that the Rocky Mountains are scenic - accurate but insufficient." - Chicago Tribune

                  2 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2004-03-27

This is, frankly, a terrible book. I'm a conservative, but I didn't find O'Rourke funny, clever, or insightful in the slightest. This book is exactly what it claims to be: a list. It is a sequence of long, boring lists of names, many of long-forgotten figures and celebrities. Explanations for the choices are rare, and superficial.

The essay about Carter at the end is mildly amusing, if trite. The "why I am conservative" is slightly better, but nothing most conservatives haven't already heard a thousand times before, in a more articulate manner.

I've never read O'Rourke before this. They say his other work is better. I certainly hope so.

4 out of 5 stars not his best.......2002-05-17

The American Spectator is sadly gone now (what's left of it is called the American Prowler), a victim of its own overzealous pursuit of President Clinton and its
dalliance with the loathsome David Brock. But many of the best writers on the Right once wrote in its pages, among them P. J. O'Rourke. Mr. O'Rourke is one of
those writers who entertains us often enough that he can be forgiven for cashing in once in awhile, which is fortunate, because this is only barely a book. It starts with
a very funny column, A Call for a New McCarthyism (American Spectator, July 1989), in which he calls for a new blacklist. Unlike the McCarthy era list though :
"The distinguishing feature of this cluster of dunces is not subversion but silliness." And rather than barring these dunces from working and trying to hush up their
views, he has the more diabolical idea of exposing them and their ideas to the harsh light of day :

[T]he worst punishment for dupes, pink-wieners, and dialectical immaterialists might be a kind of reverse blacklist. We don't prevent them
from writing, speaking, performing, and otherwise being their usual nuisance selves. Instead, we hang on their every word, beg them
to work, drag them onto all available TV and radio chat shows, and write hundreds of fawning newspaper and magazine articles about their
wonderful swellness. In other words, we subject them to the monstrous, gross, and irreversible late-twentieth-century phenomenon of Media
Overexposure so that a surfeited public rebels in disgust. This is the 'Pia Zadora Treatment,' and, for condemning people to obscurity, it beats
                  the Smith Act hollow.

That's pretty funny stuff, but then you read the list and realize that almost all of the folks on it--Gore Vidal, Tom Hayden, Angela Davis, Amy Carter, Susan
Sarandon, Mike Farrell, Tikkun, Garry Trudeau, the Sheen brothers, etc.--faded into obscurity on their own; they were so awful they weren't even worthy enemies.
Unfortunately though, this initial essay was followed by six more installments (the last in November 1993) and some of these consist of nothing more than
nominations from readers and Mr. O'Rourke's comments on their nominations. It all gets pretty tiresome.

But then just as you're ready to toss the book on the trash heap, it's redeemed by two final pieces that were seemingly tacked on at the end just to flesh the book out to
150 pages. The first, 100 Reasons Jimmy Carter Was a Better President Than Bill Clinton (American Spectator, September 1993), is very funny. The second, Why I
Am a Conservative in the First Place (Rolling Stone, July 13-27, 1995), is not only amusing but also presents as good a defense of conservatism as you'll find
anywhere these days. In light of its title and the gist of the piece, it almost has to be read as a response to F. A. Hayek's famous libertarian essay, Why I Am Not a
Conservative. Hayek, who seems to have understand American conservatism not at all, wrote :

Let me now state what seems to me the decisive objection to any conservatism which deserves to be called such. It is that by its very nature
it cannot offer an alternative to the direction in which we are moving. It may succeed by its resistance to current tendencies in slowing down
undesirable developments, but, since it does not indicate another direction, it cannot prevent their continuance. It has, for this reason, invariably
been the fate of conservatism to be dragged along a path not of its own choosing. The tug of war between conservatives and progressives
can only affect the speed, not the direction, of contemporary developments. But, though there is a need for a "brake on the vehicle of progress,"
I personally cannot be content with simply helping to apply the brake. What the liberal must ask, first of all, is not how fast or how far
we should move, but where we should move. In fact, he differs much more from the collectivist radical of today than does the conservative.
While the last generally holds merely a mild and moderate version of the prejudices of his time, the liberal today must more positively oppose
some of the basic conceptions which most conservatives share with the socialists.

Mr. O'Rourke on the other hand, though often characterized as a libertarian, accepts the conservative label and his definition of conservatism :

The purpose of conservative politics is to defend the liberty of the individual and--lest individualism run riot--insist upon individual responsibility.

contains the all important corollary to liberty, that the price of our freedom must be that we each take responsibility for ourselves. Libertarianism's major fault is
that it insists on the former but refuses the latter.

On balance, the first and then the last two pieces make the collection marginally worthwhile. And Mr. O'Rourke does have to earn a living, so we'll not begrudge
too much the filler in between.

Trevor Henshaw has done yeoman's work in producing this meticulous study of WWI airpower. WHat I found most useful was his data on the "other" fronts outside of the western front. Excellent data on airpower in the Middle East, Africa and the eastern front. Truly comprehensive work, and I look forward to more from Henshaw.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - none better covering this period.......1998-07-07

This book is a researchers delight. The effort that Trevor Henshaw has put into this book is staggering and if your are serious about WWI aviation this book should be sitting in your library. Mind you its not a book you can sit down and read but if you want to find out what happended on a particular day or follow the career of a particular pilot this is the book for you. During the time I researched 2 Australian pilots of WWI fame this book was invaluable. Just too detailed for words but excellent value for money.

From the supplier: Richard Nixon's presidency was an exciting time for journalists although he was an avowed press-hater. His habit of maintaining dossiers on reporters became a well-known fact. The press also had some good experiences with him. He ran a fairly open administration and a phone call to his communications chief Herb Klein helped overcome bureaucratic red tape. During the Nixon administration it was easy for reporters to travel with their families. The arrangements were made taking into account reporters' spouses and children. However, there were very few occasions to see Nixon's true personality.
