Book Description
Samella Lewis has brought African American Art and Artists fully up to date in this revised and expanded edition. The book now looks at the works and lives of artists from the eighteenth century to the present, including new work in traditional media as well as in installation art, mixed media, and digital/computer art. Mary Jane Hewitt, an author, curator, and longtime friend of Samella Lewis's, has written an introduction to the new edition. Generously and handsomely illustrated, the book continues to reveal the rich legacy of work by African American artists, whose art is now included in the permanent collections of national and international museums as well as in major private collections.

African American Art and Artists, Revised and Expanded Edition.......2005-07-19
Excellent book! It has pictures and a bio on todays black artists. My favorite would have to be Ben Jones, my old college professor! lol www.Gallery07002.com
A Commendable Documentation of African-American Art.......2004-04-03
Samella Lewis has updated and further developed her definitive guide on African-American Art. As a former student instructed on the subject with her first edition of this book as our class text, I can definitively say that this book provides a solid understanding of the different art movements and a variety of examples of the works. Also from the perspective of a young museum professional who has worked with African-American art collections, I highly recommend this volume as a foundation of basic knowledge on the subject.

Specific advice and information cover selection of equipment and lenses; how to compose a shot; how to get close ups; and other tips covering a range of techniques to enrich various types of nature photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Great content and easy to read. .......2007-08-29
I bought three photo books at the same time. This one was great for understanding the basics again but more in depth. Everything about his discussion on exposure relates to being outside and shooting outside.
This book is a good book to teach from if needed. I found myself highlighting many many statements and excited about reading the next chapter. I will be re-reading this book.
I would have liked to see more on blinds, building them, and stalking techniques. However, the first part of this book is very very good. I was thinking this was all about field techniques for getting close to the subject but there is little about that. However the content about stalking, etc., is very good. Now that I read the book, I see how this is a field guild. Learning how to have correct exposure in the field and get the shot you was wanting.
I really enjoyed the tone of the book. It is low key and easy to follow. Each time there is a term that may be unfamiliar he would define it and use an example. Easy to see John is a good teacher.
This is not an "all in one" book but close. However that is not the aim of the book. This one with another good basics book and I would say someone just starting out could really start taking wonderful pictures that make a mark.

Ease of Use.......2007-05-07
When you see a terrific photo, it screams "great" at you. For those of us who love great photos but have a difficult time with all the numbers, combinations, and what changes to make on the fly, this book was a breath of fresh air. Shaw tells you in plain English what makes a photo good while bouncing along in a Land Rover in the wilds of Africa or comfortably entrenched behind a tree with your telephoto lens trained on a native village in rural Mexico. He writes simply, with lovely concision. The two of you could be sitting in your living room chatting photography. I love that approach! Because the book is fairly heavy and wouldn't fit in my camera bag, I copied the needed chapters and stuffed them in. Perfect!
Simply the best.......2007-05-07
After reading several other books on nature photography, most were good, but this one is without reservation, the very best. Although written for film, most of the book is still valuable for digital photography. I was hooked on the book by the chapter on exposure. His treatment of the subject is clear and simply rang true. It has heped me to think of exposure in ways that have improved my photography significantly.
The book covers a wide range of topics and does so consistently and clearly.
Detailed Photos and Attention Grabbing Techniques........2007-02-28
Let me just thank [...]
Now to the book. I made a cursory reading of Nature Photography Field Guide and I can already tell that I did not make a mistake ordering it. It is like a course in photography itself on first glance with specialization in nature and outdoor photography. All the main stuff that I wanted to know are there: exposure, what type of lenses to use, equipment and film, composition, etc.
I especially like the fact that tricky lighting situations and exposure are addressed and techniques recommended. This is the chapter that grabs my attention at the moment, as this is my weakness: how to compensate exposure manually based on scene lighting. I will try out Shaw's suggestions as soon as I can. His photos are breathtaking and detailed with camera, lenses and accessories used.
I shall be updating this review once I made thorough reading of it. Meanwhile, thanks again Amazon for the speedy delivery of my copy of Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide and Immortal Beloved DVD!
must book for Nature Photography .......2007-01-07
I am an armature photographer, which studied photography for one academic year in Camera Obscura (one of Israel's leading photography schools). Reading the book was equal to a second year. The book covers basic photography concepts and technique (DOF, lenses ect.)as well as a very practical what you need to know and get in order to start working in the field. I must say that a great deal of my equipment was bought and upgraded based on the recommendations of John Shaw. One of the import issues the book deals with (including some very good examples) is horizontal vs. vertical positioning of the camera and the issue of cropping effect on how the image "feels".
Any new photographer that wants to start nature photography should read this book, whether he uses a DSLR or a point and shot. I go further and recommend it to any one planning a nature vacation, so when he shows his pictures to family and friends it will amaze them instead of bored them.
Great and practical book.
Customer Reviews:
Another John Shaw Book - Excellent.......2003-02-04
This is another of John Shaw's excellent books on photography. Liberally illustrated with examples and interspersed with his commentary and notes I found tremendously useful.
Shaw covers almost all aspects of photography - from the rule of 16ths, exposure, film, tripods, lenses, closeups, depth of field, composition, backlit photography, etc... Reading this book before you start using that brand new SLR of yours will save you a lot of frustration and trial and error:) A lot of the tips in the book are also equally applicable to people using point-and-shoot cameras also.
A very useful feature in this book is that almost all photos have exposure details listed. Some of his other books do not have these details, which I miss.
This book is highly recommended if you are just beginning photography and are looking for a good introductory book.
a must read for beginners and advanced amateurs.......2003-02-04
It's usually difficult to write a nature photography book that's useful for the beginners and at the same time gives valuable advice to advanced amateurs, but Mr Shaw has just done that in this book.
This book contains very valuable advice for advanced ones especially on close-ups and flash photography and at the same time he covers the basic rules (thirds, sunny f/16) from an interesting perspective. I found his advice about filters and field gears invaluable.
Read this book if you want to take stunningly realistic nature photographs.
GREAT REFERENCE. WELL ORGANIZED.......2000-07-27
I doubt if this is the only book that you will ever need on this subject, but it is certainly one that you should not be without. I frequently use it as a quick reference/refresher before "going on a shoot." The topics are organized into 2-4 pages each that provide a lot of explanation without getting bogged down in chemistry and physics. Lots of great photos to illustrate the major points.
A great first book for the aspiring nature photographer........2000-03-02
John Shaw's books are highly recommended by many photography enthusiasts. I bought his "Closeups in Nature" last year, and thought it was one of the best instructional books on photography I've ever read. "Nature Photographer's Complete Guide..." is also a very good a book, I think, but I wouldn't buy it if you already have the "Closeups..." book. I think it is probably better suited to beginning photographers.
Good across most areas.......2000-02-25
This book touches on many relevant areas and facts about landscape and wild life photography. Good reference material. A little brief about composition in the area of landscape photography, though.

Customer Reviews:
Great art & Great story!.......2003-05-29
Comics are gaining recognition and respect, but for people new to reading them it takes a nudge to pick a book outside of the big name publishers. This is your nudge. "Jax Epoch and the Quicken Forbidden" is a fantastic story, at once both clever and absorbing. It's not pigeon-holed into "a book for girls" or "a book for boys" but is appealing to everyone. Though this is a complete story, the adventures of Jax don't end with the book; the comics are still coming out and they just get better and better!
finally, strong female characters in comics!.......2003-05-06
wonderful, entertaining and unpredictable. dave and john will keep you guessing and, ultimately, wanting more.
this comic will appeal to anyone who likes adventure, robots, ice cream...or all three! jax is a great character who you will be rooting for as she travels between realms, experiments with magic, goes on trial for destroying the world, and eats cereal with extra sugar.
fans of the comic "quicken forbidden" will also appreciate bonus material featured only in this paperback edition, including a new short story about jax's childhood.

Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2007-10-04
I just finished reading the book and will be putting Jeff's techniques into practice soon. There are a lot of really good tips about how to clean specific areas of the house. I particularly liked the section on cleaing the tub & shower area.
A number of reviews here take exception to the tone of the book, calling it "strict". Well, forget about it. The tone is light-hearted and fun. He is emphatic about using his methods but I completely understand why. In my own business, I've discovered methods that are the most efficient way to accomplish a task. But when I tell other people to use that method, they insist on going their own way. They go through the exact same testing, retrying, and learning curve that I already went through and they end up doing it my way after all. It's frustrating! Just listen to the voice of experience!
For heaven's sake, Jeff has gone through these processes and discovered the best way to do it! Get yourself out of the way. Believe him. Try it. Then if you find a better way, write to him or write your own book.
Very good! Fast cleaning indeed........2007-08-01
I got a bit confused by the other reviews, and I bought this book not knowing whether it would be any good. Thank God it is a step-by-step guide of the weekly cleaning of bathroom and kitchen, and bedroom-livingroom, without any fuss.
It is true that the tone of the book is strict. I suspect they think they are being funny. Also, no mention on stainless steel appliences. It must have been written before the age of self-cleaning ovens. But other than that..
.. a really good book on speedy WEEKLY cleaning of all your rooms. I had thought of doing 10 minutes of cleaning every day. But then, when would I do the organizing and decluttering? And when would I do the heavy-duty jobs, like windows, shutters, the veranda? Enter the answer: "Weekly cleaning is the subject of this book. Daily cleaning is de-cluttering. And then, there is spring cleaning." Voila, my question answered! I am going to check out Clutter Control next. Karen Kingston's book on De-cluttering with Feng Shui is priceless, but I tend to forget a bit the lessons I learned from it. So another prosective might be nice.
Great resource.......2007-03-23
If you lack the motivation to have a clean house or are drowning in clutter, this book is not for you. If you enjoy cleanliness and are looking to become more efficient in your daily cleaning routine, this is an excellent resource.
I personally do not wear my cleaning supplies as the author suggests, but there have been countless valuable tips and strategies for improving my cleaning routine.
This book is also light-weight and easy to read, so it is also convenient to use.
changed my cleaning style.......2006-11-08
I have been keeping house since I was thirteen. It would take me a whole weekend before to get my house clean, and even then, it was not REALLY clean. This book has transformed my cleaning life. I clean alone, and can now get the house clean in 3 hours or less. Simply by moving left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and carrying my equipment with me. And the house is COMPLETELY clean.
Such a great help!.......2006-08-09
I had such a struggle with the concept of cleaning, having not learned while growing up. Cooking was my mother's better thing to do. This book really, really helped me to learn some techniques and gave me an idea of what and how to clean to be organized and complete for the weekly tasks. (There is also a Spring Cleaning book too for the annual cleaning tasks.) I tried out the methods described and bought the vacuum cleaner and other supplies and it really does work! I have only to figure out how to clean the shower door, which the cleaning products have not worked on for some reason -- maybe it is just the kind of door I have. But all else works as described.
The biggest advantage I think is that this books helps those who have not had a chance to learn how to clean growing up. I think it is also likely very useful for those who want to learn a more efficient way to clean. Even if a person just thinks through the principles given, they can improve without doing everything EXACTLY as described -- though the methods are very well thought out. For me, this book was the best thing I could have bought to help me in this area, and now I have greater confidence as I set myself to cleaning.

Organize your life!.......2007-09-10
This is an awesome book with clear guidelines for clearing the clutter and getting your life in order. The book has really helped me, but it doesn't give you a specific "you have to do this" plan, it helps you to adapt the plan for your own needs.
Targets every area of organization.......2007-06-01
With 3 little girls at home, I needed help. Cynthia Townly Ewer does an excellent job presenting and giving ideas of home and life organization. I love the pictures and checklists! She targets every area of organization. I put my household notebook together and it has brought focus and direction to my family's life.
Best housekeeping book!.......2007-04-30
I had long been a fan of Cheryl Mendelson's massive homekeeping book "Home Comforts," but "House Works" takes the win, lock, stock and barrel!
HW is very thorough, a nice-sized paperback, and you don't have to wade through too much detail (like Home Comforts) to find the basic information you're looking for.
[...]
You also don't spend all day cleaning like really happens with FlyLady's method. Cynthia's advice is sane, funny, and effective, but she won't send you a zillion emails a day and sugar-coat everything. If you're looking for a great alternative to FlyLady, this is it!
DK Books are always a pleasure to look at - lots of colorful photographs, and HW is no exception. It's full of humor as well, which is also a positive.
I used to give Home Comforts as a wedding shower gift, but now I will be giving HW.
I'm a long-time member of the Organized Home message boards and was thrilled to get my hands on this book.
Buy it!
Like a breath of fresh air.......2007-04-21
I've read them all but THIS one is like a breath of fresh air: Concise, easy to read, and the illustrations/photographs are clear and lovely to view. Add in a touch of humor and you have a book that is both helpful and a pleasure to read.
Get Back in Control of Your Home.......2007-04-04
When you can't stand the clutter any longer, check out this book for some great organizational tips. Bring your entire house back into order.

Customer Reviews:
Not as helpful as expected........2007-08-24
I was a bit dissapointed with this book. It's not organized well and Ms Dellutri constantly does not give enough information. I found it extremely anoying that she would make statments like: (I'm paraphrasing) "You should use a kitchen spray cleaner that is antibacterial and kills germs in the least amount of time. I found one that kills germs on countertops in 45 seconds." BUT, then she doesn't tell us the brand or where to buy, so I guess she wants us to go off on a scavenger hunt for these products! She makes suggestions like this throughout the book. I've read other books on this subject and other authors suggest brands and products. Even Jeff Campbell (Speed Cleaning) who sells his own rather pricey products on the inernet recommends other brands in his book and suggests alternative products. This is very helpful for the reader. Ms. Dellutri doesn't give detailed instructions either, so someone just starting out is not given details as to the correct method, correct tools, to remove dirt, grime or whatever from surfaces at home. The book lacks methodology, product/brand recommendations, and organization.
great help for new moms.......2007-03-31
I met Laura as she was starting her business, I never gave cleaning much of a thought because I was single. Well almost two decades later I found myself scrambling to get things done as a new stay-at-home mom. The tips in this book helped me gain control of my house without losing my mind. Thanks so much!!!! I highly reccomend this and anything from Real Simple.
Speed Cleaning 101: Cut Your Cleaning Time in Half.......2007-03-28
Too many prose...not a quick read. Prefer the Clean Team and the Campbells books. They are to the point and are not afraid to recommend supplies one can pick up off the shelves of the grocery store. So, I bought the Speed Cleaning book//Campbell and the Clean Team.Speed Cleaning
Basic advice with a few gold nuggets.......2005-08-28
What's charming about the book is the author's positive attitude and humor. She gives great advice on what products to use and general techniques. However, this book is not a step-by-step manual. It seems written for people who have already housecleaned their whole lives and just need some pointers.
Best advice from the book:
1. Use microfiber cloths
2. Separate wet from dry cleaning
3. Work top from bottom, clockwise around the room
4. Use Lemon oil to chine bathroom/chrome accessories
Clutter meetsClean and neat.......2005-07-21
This book is so exciting to me, the Title itself is motivating. I read of it in a magazine, immediately went to Amazon! Sure enough, there it was. I ordered it and in a few days spent time reading it (still reading). It is so encouraging to finally find something that WORKS without making you feel defeated before you start. This book tells me what I need to make it simple, enjoyable and excited because I know if I follow this method I can have a clean, uncluttered houseall of the time...without the panic on hearing the doorbell ring and find my neighbor standing there waiting to be invited in. When we visited our son and family recently, I took the book to read on the way up and back, when his wife saw it , she wanted one. so I gave her mine, then regreted it all the way home, thinking "what if I can't find another? Not to worry, I did .Now, I'm busy reading more and doing more in less time.
I highly recommend this book to homemakers, professionals, or any one that isn't presently using this method. Try it , you will like it!

Customer Reviews:
Very comprehensive, teaches time saving tricks & methods!.......2007-08-03
I was searching for a book that would show me a comprehsive way to keep my home clean without making it my primary focus in life. This book has delivered all I was hoping for and more.
First, I am a decent housekeeper 90% of the time. However, not being a professional I was finding it difficult to get the "Merry Maids" clean look by myself. There were some things I was overlooking and other things I was avoiding simply because I did not know how to accomplish specific cleaning tasks.
After reading this book I armed myself with the right tools, cleaning products, and methods and found this book really does what it says. I am able to go once around the kitchen cleaning counters, cabinets, refrigerator, stove, etc, and then once around cleaning the floors. The kitchen had the Merry Maids look in about 1/3 to 1/2 the normal amount of time I spend cleaning, and it was cleaner!
I have not yet attempted the bathrooms, but I am up the challenge and can't wait to try out the speed clean methods.
I should also note that there are various editions of this book by the same author. This one is the longest at over 400 pages. I am not sure what the other books leave out, but they are only 1/2 as long.
You will also need to invest in a cleaning apron to make this work. I purchased the McGuire Nicholas 72489SBT 5-Pocket Handyman's Tool Pouch, Olive and it is serving me well, but the author sells an even better one that fits his system better. I also found that when you buy your trigger spray cleaners be sure to buy ones with LONG triggers so they will stay hooked into the apron well.

Speed+Cleaning=zero boredom.......2003-10-22
I am so glad that I read Speed Cleaning 101 by Laura Dellutri. The book was easy to read and very relatable. This book has rescued my doomed house from a woman with scant time to clean and a classic "later" attitude. Now I feel confident in my cleaning and the presentation of my home. Three cheers for cleaning "smarter--not harder."
Laura Dellutri's Speed Cleaning 101.......2003-05-13
I loved this book. I wish I could thank Laura personally. It has a lot of good tips and it also talks about what not to do.
I started trying her tips the same day and some are simple they are smart and helped me a lot. She seems like a neet lady.
