Book Description

Like many great toys of the past, penny banks are considered abstracts from real life. Here are still banks, those with no moving parts, and mechanical banks that flip coins into a receptor, chosen to illustrate the history of penny banks. There are banks made of cast iron, tin, pottery, wood, and pot metal in forms that include folk art, political events, and special places such as a World's Fair. The book presents over 250 color photographs of intriguing American banks arranged from the 18th century through the present. They are treasured toys to some and fascinating mechanical devices to others who cherish the advances made possible by new technologies and subjects. While toy collectors and dealers will enjoy the variety, bankers-and we all know a few of them-will appreciate the thrift these banks convey.

    Book Description

THE BIGHEAD - He's coming, all right. He's coming for you... Rape. Murder. Brain-eating... THE BIGHEAD - Who is he? What is he? An inbred homicidal pervert? A supernatural psychopath? Who or whatever he is, he's on a roll now, raging out of the Virginia backwoods, and leaving in his wake a trail of blood, guts, and disgust far beyond the limits of your reckoning. JERRICA -Sex-addict, drug-addict--a woman so far out of control she would make Linda Lovelace look like a schoolmarm. And little does she know, The Bighead is coming...for her.

THE ABBEY -Closed for years, Wroxeter Abbey is back in business, haunted by two nuns...from hell. Erotopathic, clinically demented, gross beyond belief. To the faithful priest, Father Alexander, they will do things that absolutely beggar description...

Never before has a work of fiction dared to delve so deeply into the realms of perversion, sexual dementia, and bad taste.

THE BIGHEAD - He's coming, all right. He's coming for ! ! you

    3 out of 5 stars Extreme, fast-paced, but what a downer.......2007-09-04

I'll avoid rehashing the plot since many other reviewers have done a good job there, and be a little more general.

This a one intense, extremely graphic page-turner. It really flies like you'd hope a book would. I've seen a lot of reviews where readers claim the book went like a freight train, but found myself somewhat bored once I had my hands on it. Not The Bighead - this one really does go like a freight train.

As others have said, violence, grossness, and just plain old viciousness don't come any more hardcore than this. The things these characters do is repugnant and makes you want the worst for them. Badly. You want them to suffer for what they've done. It's hard to keep a sense of justice with characters that are just so utterly vicious and unrepentant.

And there is one of this story's two major flaws. I'll try to be careful about spoilers. First, there is little payoff in the end. As a matter of fact, it's one of those books that makes you want to punch the authors. Be prepared for an ending where those who deserve the worst don't get it, and those you've been made to care for do. Not everything has to have a fairy tale ending, but the opposite has quickly become just as passe'. Why end everything with such a bummer?

The other flaw is basically that they seemed to try too hard. They through everything -and- the kitchen sink at this book, especially at the end. And there's a subplot of sort with the priest and some nuns, which contributes greatly to the ending I hate so much, that has absolutely no purpose whatsoever. There's no explanation for why the nuns are the way they are, why the priest ends up as he does, and there's absolutely zero connection between this facet and the rest of the story. It seems it's only there for two reasons: One, to give them another thing to be gross about; and two, to give them a good way to ruin the ending (at least to my eyes).

This was a great read right up until the end, then it ruins everything. If only they had decided on a different conclusion that was a better blend of happy and sad. Those are the best - where you have to accept some painful loss but know it was worth it. And, again, they just threw too much at it. A pointless subplot, everything and the kitchen sink climax, depressing ending. I wonder what the other version was like? I'm not going to spend the money to see if the "Not Author's Preferred Version" ends any better.

    5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!.......2007-01-08

If you are new to the delightfully depraved novels of Edward Lee, what an excellent place to start! This was my first encounter with this robustly unapologetic horror dynamo and, I must say, I was thoroughly appalled and utterly delighted by this book. THE BIGHEAD makes The Texas Chainsaw Massacre seem like an episode of Eight is Enough, get what I'm saying? This is rough stuff, TombRats, the real deal for fans who want to read horror of the most extreme variety. The Bighead is a killing machine from the backwoods, a brain-eating, rampaging thing that is cannibalizing his way through the backwoods of Virginia, looking for a twisted, sex-and-drug-addicted slattern who has no idea that The Bighead is coming for her. And if that isn't gross enough, there's an abbey where a pair of demonic nuns treat the vicar to the most mind-bendingly disgusting obeisance ever put to print. How are you not going to love a book infested by nasty characters named Balls and Goop? What is The Bighead? Is he an inbred maniac or a supernatural monster out of hell? Well, I couldn't get Mr. Lee to spill the beans (see below), but I know you'll enjoy finding out for yourself when you read this crazy scary book. You think you've read hardcore horror, but haven't yet read THE BIGHEAD? Well, ha! You better click on the cover and catch up. Bonus: this is the new "Author Preferred" edition. Oh, man! Gird your loins and keep the upchuck bucket to next to your reading chair, because this is going to be a trip!

1 out of 5 stars They published this?.......2006-08-06

Ok, I got hyped up on the big star reviews for this book. I love horror, and I wanted to read something that was "No holds barred." According to the reviews this is what I was expecting from The Bighead. Unfortunately I was let down in a big way.
This book is gross, and disgusting, but not because of the content. It is gross that a publisher actually put this out for the masses, it is disgusting because I spent $25 on it.
The writing is horrible. Characters are hollow, and the author cheats you out of the gross moments you paid for. It is almost like he pulls back because he is scared to go into detail. Also, go learn some Pronouns dude. I swear for goodness, when you have to read the chapters on the two moonshine runners, you'll read the same three words at least 15 times a page. That incredible work of literary genius is "Tritt Balls Conner." Never is he refered to as anything else. Its always Tritt Balls Conner this, Tritt Balls Conner that, Trit Balls Conner don't take (Explitive Deleted) from nobody, Trit Balls Conner will make you poop, then make ya eat it, then Tritt Balls Conner is gonna kill you dead cause Tritt Balls Conner is Tritt Balls Conner. Dang that was annoying, now picture that times 3, or 5, and expect it to come around every third chapter.
I sure hope I can get someone to buy my copy, and at least get what I paid for it back. This book is the dumbest piece of junk ever. Curious George is deeper, and more entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the squeamish.......2006-07-27

This is the most disgusting book I've ever read. I had to put it down several times because it was too soon after meals. It is so gross and so shocking that it is in a class by itself. I loved it. Not for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Sick Gross Fun.......2005-11-08

This book is sick, disgusting, gross, demented, it sucks you in and spits you out, a hammerfist to the skull, but I loved it. This should be in every Ed Lee's fan's collection.

Jeffrey Brown is back - and with a Bighead, no less! An irreverent and clever super-hero parody, featuring the most amazing hero of all time: Bighead. Witness inept villains clash with an all-too-emotional hero, in the epic graphic novel that will leap all cliches in a single bound.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Insanely Delightful.......2007-01-14

Thrill as Bighead battles such superfoes as Heartbroke, Crabby (also known as "Crabby"!), Temptationtress, a couple of adorable little space monkeys who come in peace, and Girl-Hair ("his grooviest nemesis yet"!)

I love love love Jeffrey Brown's work. Bighead is even more of a delight if you've read his autobiographical stuff, Clumsy, Unlikely, etc... though as the mother of a six-year-old Big Head fan, I can vouch that it resonates even if you're too little to get your hands on anything else in his copious, and sexually explicit ouevre. (The clothes stay on in Bighead, and the language is solidly G-rated, but I could imagine some adolescent males locking themselves in the bathroom for some quality time with a dog-eared Tempationtress page...)

Man, I don't even LIKE superhero comics (except one by James Kochalka, which is listed, not quite correctly, on Amazon as Superf*ckers), but any North American born after, say, 1940 will have enough knowledge of standard superheroic speech and situations to relish this pitch-perfect parody.

It's even got a tiny rendering of Bighead as a tiny Tiger Beat-style hunk.

    Perfection.

                  Book Description

fter nineteen years as a writer for Sports Illustrated, Austin Murphy should have had it made. Instead, he'd had it with life as an absentee husband and father. So he decided to trade it in for a new life: that of his wife, Laura. Alas, the man charged with preparing three nutritious meals a day had never mastered his own outdoor grill. And that was just the beginning. Sublimely ignorant of everything from grocery shopping to housecleaning to the need to trim his children's nails more than, say, semiannually, Murphy embarks on his journey like Shackleton taking on the Southern Ocean: spectacularly ill-equipped to survive it.

5 out of 5 stars This book improved my marriage!.......2005-08-17

I LOVED this book and have given it to many as a baby gift or just because gift. It really helped me see that I was over achieving in the household and my husband was underachieving. After we both read this book, we had a heart to heart that was much lighter and productive than the vent session I'd rehearsed for weeks prior. It really helped me lighten up and helped my husband see he needed to step up to the plate. Highly recommend.

                  3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2005-06-18

This is a writer who decides to stay home for 6 months with the kids - I think just for the purpose of writing a book and making money. If he really wanted to "be there" for his kids, why didn't he scale back on his career long-term?

There are a couple of funny moments in the book, but nothing all that interesting.

5 out of 5 stars laugh out loud funny.......2005-04-29

Beautifully written and laugh out loud funny at the same time. I'm going to get this book for friends and family. (No, I'm not being paid by the author, I'm not related to him, and, in fact, I don't know him at all - except from the book)

5 out of 5 stars Laughed so hard I damn near cried.......2004-06-29

This is one of those books that you tell all your friends about. Two things stand out for me: the absolutely manic laughter it elicited and the benefit it gave me.

Murphy's writing style perfectly juxtaposes bawdy humor with an obvious intelligence; and when in doubt, he goes for the laugh. I laughed so hard at this thing that a couple of times it gave me an asthma attack. I think it helps if you have kids, and you recognize how ugly parenting can get.

But there is also a deeper benefit. Like the author, I finished the book with a better "vision," a clearer sense of just how hard, how maddening, and how unending the daily life of a woman is. I think I'm a better husband having read it.

                  5 out of 5 stars GREAT read!.......2004-06-27

I read the book after watching Murphy interviewed on the Today Show. The book is just great with many laugh out loud funny moments. HIGHLY recommend! (Make your husband's read it!)
