Robin Williams calls
Zippy "a word processor with dyslexia." And if that makes any sense to you, you'll love this book. If you've seen
Zippy in the newspaper and can't make heads or tails of it, trust me. It reads better in large doses. This first
Zippy book collects material from 1974 to 1985.

A Blast from the Zippy Archives.......2000-03-31
This large trade paperback collection collects some of the earliest Zippy strips and brings us thru the mid-1980's. It's amazing, considering the topical nature of much of the material, how well this stuff holds up! But the originality of Bill Griffith's characters and their media-crazed obsessions are timeless...
(We also get to see Griffy's hairstyle dramatically transform!)
From my experience, I must add that Zippy is an addictive pleasure, so be careful...

AP Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law (Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law)
ASIN: 1859732283 |
Book Description
Doubly tainted by its associations with consumerism and the 'frivolous' world of couture, fashion photography has long been ignored as a serious site for academic study. Yet both the body and dress have proved keenly revealing of gender, race and sexual politics. Further, fashion photography has been transformed by aesthetic concerns, sexual politics and the pleasure of spectatorship - all of which suggest that its iconography represents a rich source for the analysis of how identity is constructed.
Exploring representations of the feminine and the masculine body - from super-vamp to super-waif, from buffalo boy to new man - this book considers the social, economic and aesthetic factors that have been instrumental in forging an identity for fashion photography since 1980. Drawing extensively on fashion spreads from Vogue, The Face and Arena, the author takes as his starting point Barthes' axiom that the magazine is 'a machine for making Fashion'. He explores how meaning is constructed in word and image, but he refutes Barthes' claim that the fashion system is a vacuous form of signification. In evaluating the ostensible paradox between sexual objectification and spectatorship, the author also looks at what the depiction of both male and female bodies in fashion spreads reveals about power, knowledge and pleasure. How does the iconography of fashion gratify our desires? Who are these images for - men and women? men or women? Does fashion photography invent role models, or simply satisfy nascent cultural values of beauty and sexual attraction? Why is fashion photography considered a form of 'soft porn' for the delectation of men when women are by far the largest consumers of fashion periodicals? How do the investments of different producers and spectators - male and female, gay and straight, white and non-white - affect the fashion image?
In answering these questions and many more, this book represents a significant contribution to the following areas: photography; fashion and dress; cultural studies; sex, race and gender studies; art and design history; media studies; and sociology.
Customer Reviews:
A thesis on fashion photography 1980-present.......2000-04-06
A sometimes dense and pretentious evaluation of magazine fashion photography, "Fashion Spreads" is nonetheless an informative and thought-provoking work. Jobling too often cites photographs as examples that are not included in the book, and many of his arguments on gender theory are tenuous at best. He is most convincing with his definition on the difference between "fashion" and "clothing", and in his description of the fashion cycle and what it says about society.

out of this world........2007-06-02
love the characters, beautiful art and funny story lines.
THIS is what comic books are all about!!!.......2006-07-27
I've been following the Rocketo series since it first came out from Speakeasy comics. I would wait and wait for the next issue to come out; something I don't do with comic books. Why? Because Rocketo is originality at its finest.
Frank Espinosa is destined to become one of the greats in comic history. A veteran in the animation field, Frank took a shot at comics with Rocketo, and what a shot it was! The artwork is something you never see in traditional comic books; it has its own feel to it. The story is epic, but I know many other reviewers already commented on that, so I won't repeat them.
The trade, in particular, is laid out sideways, capturing the original way the books were produced. If there is one graphic novel, one comic book that I would recommend someone to show them what a comic book is capable of, it's definitely Rocketo!
An Incredible Adventure!.......2006-04-02
It's rare to find such a great, intuitive story teller. The art is fantastic, some of the very most inspired I've seen in comics. Bravo!
Two fisted storybook adventure.......2006-03-20
Very few comic titles capture my attention from the stands, "ROCKETO: Journey to the Hidden Sea" by Frank Espinosa warrants it. And I'm glad Image Comics picked up the title and includes within this collected volume two unprinted issues to this tale as it was a monthly from another publisher.
With its storybook-like panelling and two tone artwork, reminiscent in its design of golden age sci-fi pulp cliffhanger serials and the two fisted action therein, it tells the adventure of Rocketo Garrison, last known "mapper" of an Earth broken by cataclysm and reformed in his time as a war weary New World filled with get rich schemers, mad men gangsters, power hungry governments all chasing after the new super science of this age. This is a fun title to read for all ages.
This volume concludes with a section of colorful concept sketches of characters and images of future tales to ROCKETO.
More than just gorgeous art.......2006-03-19
Frank Espinosa's ROCKETO is more than just a collection of bold ink lines and amazing colors; it's also a story that has the depth and detail of a classic literary fantasy, with some of the feel of a 1940s superhero comic. Set in a distant future, it follows the exploits of Rocketo Garrison, who (with his intelligent canine sidekick Spiro) is out to remap a shattered Earth. Espinosa's art feels like it could practically run off the page, with more visual excitement than a dozen typical graphic novels (and the unique oblong presentation of the book is a delight as well). This one has the makings of a future classic.

Laughed Myself Silly.......2006-03-03
This thoroughly clean collection of humor made me giggle 'til I wiggled and snicker 'til snot shot out. I truly love this book and make it a point to flip through it whenever I sit down on the throne of gross (I keep it in my unheavenly bathroom, dip-pickle!).
The alphabetized humor is easy to reference and good to use on an audience of one or one hundred or ... on nun.
Two thumbs up and clapping happily!

This book is not for magicians. One or two things might be funny, but most of the book is nothing.
This book is soooo cool.......2000-09-23
I bought this book last month and it rocks. It's got loads of really cool tricks that are easy to learn. One of them shows you how to make your finger look like it's got no bone in it. Another one shows you how to make a milion bucks by conning your folks! Plus some of the tricks and jokesreally gross out all my friends. I've already lent it to three friends. I think I'm going to start renting it out. I can't wait for Burp2.
