Customer Reviews:
research design and statistics for the language teacher.......2000-08-14
"Understanding Research in Second Language Learning" is the perfect book for any teacher or researcher who would like to be able to critique or assess statistical research papers without having to spend an inordinate amount of time studying math in the process. The book starts off by asking the pertinent question "What is research?", before explaining clearly and concisely what variables are and how they can be identified, how data is measured, and how to choose the most appropriate statistical analysis for your particular research question. What I liked most about this book was the methodological approach to understanding what good research design is, and that the helpful diagrams, summaries and review questions made understanding rather easier than may have been otherwise. With this book, you will probably be able to understand ninety percent of the stats that appear in language research papers, and to follow the logic of almost all.

Survival Kit for the Secondary School Art Teacher
ASIN: 0761974784 |
Book Description
In any area of the curriculum, children need to learn concepts, facts, and skills through first-hand experience. In art, such learning depends on exploring and experimenting with the visual language through which artists communicate, and the visual elements such as line, color, and shape.
This book systematically explores the basic knowledge needed to do this effectively. The author deals with the visual elements of art, their properties, how they are related, and especially the ways in which children's knowledge of each can be developed through simple but creative activities. Each element is placed in context, with extensive cross-referencing. The author shows how these elements can be observed in the children's environment and provides examples of how they have been used in works of art and craft.
Contents include:
- Art as exploration
- Point
- Line
- Tone
- Mixing and controlling color
- Perceiving and observing color
- Responding to color
- Shape
- Space
- Form
- Texture
- Pattern
This accessible book does not assume any specialist knowledge or experience. It is essential for teachers at primary and secondary levels, art coordinators, and for undergraduate and postgraduate level students of art education.

Book Description
The world of the undead is a vast one, with many stories remaining to be told. In Bloodsucker Tales, Steve Niles continues the saga of 30 Days of Night with the bloody and terrifying story "Dead Billy Dead," illustrated by talented newcomer Kody Chamberlain. Matt Fraction (Last of the Independents) joins in with "Juarez," introducing Lex Nova, former private detective and free-range madman, illustrated by Ben Templesmith.
Customer Reviews:
Two Different Stories of Varying Quality - Buy It for the Art.......2006-12-13
The first story, "Dead Billy Dead," written by Steve Niles and illustrated by Kody Chamberlain, is pretty good. The story is nothing great, but it's entertaining, but the art really stands out. It's very moody, with deep shadows and gorgeous coloring. I'd give it an "A".
The second story, "Juarez," by Matt Fraction and Ben Templesmith, started out great but completely becomes incomprehensible towards the end. This story is more complicated than the first one, and I respect that, but it's told in eight parts, the first six of which were really good, but the last two of which makes no sense at all. Overall, less enjoyable than the first, although I am a sucker for Ben Templesmith's artwork. I'd give it a "B".
It's not great, but good enough entertainment. Kinda expensive though. So you might want to skip it. Fun, but not good enough of a value.
I LOVE KODY CHAMERLAIN'S ART!!.......2006-01-29
BLOODSUCKER TALES WAS OVERALL A REALLY GOOD BOOK. THE WRITING WAS OK, BUT THE ART WAS AWESOME. BEN TEMPLESMITH CONTINUED HIS STYLE THAT HE DID IN THE OTHER BOOKS, BUT NEWCOMER KODY CHAMBERLAIN WOWED EVERYONE WITH HIS EXCELLENT REALISM AND COLORS. I LOVED THE ART IN THIS BOOK AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE TO CHECK IT OUT!
Two twisted tales, two great artists.......2005-10-27
Niles and Fraction deliver odd, twisted and gruesome stories worthy of the bearing the "30 Days of Night" tag. Established fan favorite 30 Days artist Templesmith delivers his usual top notch visuals and you can see where he had a little fun playing with his style a bit to suit the story. Newcomer Kody Chamberlain proves he's ready to be part of the big show. His use of line, color and texture deliver his story in an engaging combination of classic illustration, modern horror comic and horror movie splatterfest.
CHAMBERLAIN, A TALENTED NEWCOMER?.......2005-10-06
Just as many fans of the 30 Days Of Night books i have to say that this is the most uncool of them all. I wont focus on the plot itslef (both stories are fine) instead, i have to warn you, if you appreciate well done drawings, then this book is not for you. Kody Chamberlain's work is ..... well, see for yourself, if you have the chance to do a web search, check it out and then you decide.
Ben Templesmith has proven that you dont need to be an excellent anatomist nor to have deep knowledge on prespective, you just need some creativity to make it work, in fact, Templesmith's drawings are so bad that they are cool and scary.
Im really sorry to say that "Bloodsucker Tales" would have better stayed on the shelf from where i took it from.
Its your call anyway.

A Long Way from Home: Growing Up in the American Heartland in the Forties and Fifties
ASIN: 1586482009
Release Date: 2003-10-14 |
Book Description
A New York Times, USA Today and BOOKSENSE bestseller, now in paperback in time for the holidays.
Andy Rooney's Sunday evening observations on 60 Minutes are an American institution. With millions of viewers tuning in every week, Rooney shapes the way people see everything from coffee percolators to the state of the nation.
Rooney's fans get a treat for the holidays: The paperback edition of his smash bestseller Common Nonsense. Here is Andy Rooney at his best--acerbic, teasing, witty, insightful, and wise. Each section of the book is devoted to a topic close to his heart--food, sports, politics, health, home and work life. The result is a hilarious and perceptive look at the country Rooney loves...enough to criticize.
Customer Reviews:
His show is better than his book.......2007-04-28
I love Rooney. His appearance on 60 minutes+ is like a delicious dessert as the final course of a truly good meal, or wine in French dining, simply indispensable. However, may be I had too high an expectation, this book of 154 essays on 14 major topics seemed overstretched and not delightful. Perhaps I had been so used to his short, sarcastic but always to the point remarks on TV. I couldnt be absorbed into his messages without his trademark tone and look. Still a fine choice for leisure reading, but definitely not as interesting nor enlightening as what you watch on TV.
There are much better ways to waist time!.......2006-10-07
I enjoy watching Andey Rooney on television, his thoughts are always insightful and funny. Much to my dismay, "Common Nonsense" is neither. It is truly a waist of time to read a bitter old man's opions on anything and everything that has to do with modern life. This is the first book by Andy Rooney that I have read and it has truly ruined my opinion of him, I almost feel sorry for the guy! How can a man live through a war and return home only to become a well known, if not famous figure in the U.S. media and still complain about EVERYTHING! Don't buy this book unless you enjoy being disapointed.
Irritatingly Repetitive.......2004-03-30
I thought I liked Andy Rooney, I was wrong. This book is a collection of observations of Mr. Rooney, observations that have been poorly researched in some cases (Stating that police officers have a arrest quota was one of the more laughable beliefs). The book is entertaining for a few pages, then Mr. Rooney's constantly whining voice started eating at my brain and I just got sick of the whole thing. If you are a real fan of Andy's 60 Minute spots, then this would probably interest you. I, however, was nauseated by the constant bitching of a man who has more than most could ever hope to have.
T
Inane.......2004-03-06
Common? Sure. Nonsense? What else can we expect from Andy Rooney?
I can't believe this silly old meatball ever got anywhere in journalism, if journalism is, in fact, what he does. The only reason Rooney is still breathing is because he's surviving on the air in his head, which is as plentiful as it is noxious. Unfortunately, that leaves his head empty except for the hollow footsteps of a long gone thought, an inane one, of course.
"Inane" is the word to describe the author and this waste of a perfectly good tree.
Nice read........2004-01-23
This is, indeed, a nice read, as we say, and many people will
find it a very pleasant book to browse through. This is a compendium of pure Andy Rooney, and if a person enjoys hearing his 60 Minutes commentaries, they will enjoy this present book.
His stories are short and to the point, and he makes no pretense
of them being anything other than his personal opinion on dozens
of topics, from WWII to the present, and he is usually funny
and accurate.
But there is nothing new here, and the book moves along almost
too smoothly. There is very little to catch the imagination.
This book is easily put down, and it can be read anytime, anywhere with some satisfaction.
It would be a wonderful gift for Rooney fans.

Customer Reviews:
Buy the 6 CD set instead retitled Intuitive Listening.......2007-06-14
I have all of Dr. Northrup's DVDs, videotapes, CDs, books and cassettes. I love how she reminds us of the total mind body connection, rather than trying to get us to follow separate health changes for just our body. Her PBS specials and writings are humorous and informative. And her approach to healing ourselves is always balanced. She never asks you to cut out a food group entirely, she asks you to choose a more healthy approach. I like that she says treat white flour, white sugar items as a condiment and have them on a rare occasion.
She also says treat yourself and every meal you have as though you are dancing with someone you love. Now if we all did that, our meals would be a lot less stressful and so much more enjoyable.
If you want this on CD and much cheaper, please buy the 6 CD set Intuitive Listening. It is the same package.
The Wisdom of the Body.......2007-03-20
The body never lies but often people have trouble trusting what they feel. One of the greatest gifts in life is trusting yourself, practising discernment, and realizing the wisdom of the body. If you feel a certain way about someone it is true although sometimes its a bad emotional pattern coming up. Decipher the distinction between not being emotionally sober versus true innate neutral and strong gut instincts. Dr. Northrup and Dr. Schultz are fabulous guides in this area to help navigate the commmon sense approach that distinguishes fact from fiction in the six sense. When you take the emotional hijacks out of the way ... you can tune into the wisdom of the body with accuracy, clarity, and confidence.
Wonderful Information.......2004-04-30
Very valuable information for everyone and easy to listen to. These women have so much real information to share that is difficult to find elsewhere, but it is like listening to your smarter girlfriends having a conversation. I liked the combination of styles and the fact that the doctors shared some of their lives, including their own ups and downs. I can relate to them as opposed to the "experts" that are pushing a certain type diet or program (why do those experts always write another book a few years later with a new, different program?)
Great stuff.
WOW!.......2001-12-02
Intuitively, I always knew that all of me was connected and this certainly confirms that. Thank you!
Interesting, but..............2001-06-04
There was so much in this tape series that is interesting that I hesitate to critise the work but here goes.... Dr. Schulz and Dr. Northrup are totally fun, because they are good friends and know each other very well. This is a plus and a minus, they have good information to impart, but sometimes the "conversational tone" of the tape series takes away from the content.
I wrote down the helpful info but they don't reiterate or restate necessary herbal medication info to treat various disorders. Actually this is a critism of the tape medium, itself; a book is better to look up information. Especially in a 6 tape series, where was the information? I listened to the series over a two day period. I found the information area's hard to recall. I felt the formate should have been tighter for info less chit chat and yet a part of me, ok, the gossipy part, loved that aspect of the tape.
I get Dr. Northrup's newsletter so I am familiar with her philosopys and positions on medical treatments. They try to look at people in a wholistic way. We are the sum of our parts, seen and unseen (genetic), plus they add the spiritual element of soul too. Making a really complete "primordial soup" of a human being. They focus on women, but have several men that they analyze their medical problems and look at their whole life to find the reason for their problem. Then they attempt to give advice, and the least intrusive medical solution, to solve or ease the medical problem.
I appreciate the attitude they both have toward medicine. Which is look at the whole person and his/her cosmology and DON'T try to over medicate or over operate to fix the problem. The less is more philosophy.
In conclusion, I loved the chattiness and personal touch of the two doctors, although it took away from the important information somewhat. I would have preferred a book so I could look up the specific herbs and treatments for different things. Another thing they could have done was put a short little series of "Depression can be treated with St. Johns Wort ---dose." Anxiety with Kava Kava and.... dosage such or something like that. Easy to find and at the end, just dealing with what they dealt with in the tape series.

Family of Poems, A
ASIN: 1563053136 |
Book Description
To be read aloud before bed or during a quiet moment, this book introduces a literature of delight to the whole family. In the Victorian era, the best poets and literary minds created a special world for children. Today these poems, with their rollicking energy and old-fashioned values, are still brimming with charm, whimsy, and truth.
Here are offerings from Amy Lowell, Edward Lear, James Whitcomb Riley, Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, and Robert Louis Stevenson combined with treasures hidden for a century or more in scrapbooks, anthologies, and dusty copies of The Youth's Companion and St. Nicholas Magazine. Poems on the virtues of home and family, the seasons, animals, patriotism-and silly poems that mean nothing at all.
Charming full-color pictures of the period decorate each page, and for parents and older readers, there is marginalia on the poem or poet.
30,000 copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
Victorian era for sure.......2007-05-14
This is just what I was looking for. Beautifully illustrated and sweet old fashioned thoughts to share with children. Be careful not to share the sexist ideas in some of them, with the children. We don't want to loose any ground that we have made since the Victorian times. For the most part, just good messages. It's not a book about today....but a look back in time.
Victorian Treasure Trove.......2001-11-29
If you love Victorian illustration you will be in heaven with this terrific book. It is a treasury of over 100 Victorian era verses set up in sections about Childhood Years, Sprites and Goblins, Rules for Growing Up, Absurdities, and the World of Nature. The illustrations are full color and just as charming as you could possibly wish. The quality of the paper, printing, cover, and dustjacket are all top-notch. There are interesting margin notations that give the history and background of the verses and pictures. Here's a parting thought from the book. "Ride, ride the carousel, Reach for the golden ring, Never to finish, But begin again. Life is a circular thing."
An amusing and interesting book.......2000-03-14
I found this book a little different from other children's books of verse. It is a book of victorian verses that teach children of good manners, and others that are just plain amusing. Some of the verses are cumulative, which means a new line is added with each verse, such as "the little old lady who swallowed a fly" which are good for helping children understand the progression of the story, as well as helping them to learn to read because the words are repetitive. I also found interesting the notes on the side of the page that gives a little history behind the verse. The pictures in this book are beautiful and look as if they come straight from a victorian scrapbook. I think this is an excellent book!

Candid, poignant & thought-provoking.......2003-06-27
This is a fascinating account of the scientific and humanistic education of a truly remarkable woman who trained in Argentina. Dr. Stemmler contrasts the simplicity of 3rd world medicine with America's health care system, & critiques the economics that justify health care rationing. Dr. Stemmler offers an inspirational vision of what universal access to health care could be.
An Inspiring Book.......2002-02-19
Dr. Stemmler's book is a moving account of her training and experiences as a physician. Her professional competence, in both Western and Eastern medicine, and her ability to empathize and connect with her patients are important parts of her story. The book begins a critique of standard Western medicine that she plans to continue in future writings. Both for this reason and for the stories she tells, it is a most worthwhile book to read. I strongly recommend "No-Nonsense Medicine."
A real look at health care.......2002-01-31
This book is ideal for all patients, especially since its language is accessible and inspiring. Told from the doctor's point of view, this story is a personal and intimate look at a physician's journey through the medical field. The readers can easily connect with her life and feel as though they are living her experiences. This book also gives us hope as patients that we can take control of our own health care. I highly recommend it to all patients in an effort to reassure us that we CAN dictate how we are treated and cared for.
A thoughtful, challenging work.......2002-01-14
No-Nonsense Medicine: A Physician's Path to Sensible Healing is a critical, appraising look at today's "standards of care." Doctor Christina Stemmler (a Board Certified Family Physician who trained in both Chinese and Western medicine) explains the failings of the current industry standards, with the core message and conclusion that the vitality of the doctor-patient relationship can be the strongest asset for healing. A thoughtful, challenging work, No-Nonsense Medicine is highly recommended reading for patients, medical students, physicians, health care workers, and alternative medicine practitioners.
patient-empowerment medicine.......2001-12-14
The rapid technological advances in medicine, the urgent need to specialize, the incredibely fast accummulation of information, turns many physicians into expert technicians - diagnosis and treatment-focused rather than patient-focused. The patient, the focus of treatment, is usually lost in this medical maze; he/she becomes an object. Dr. Stemmler proves that there is another way. While her approach is humanistic, patient-focused, she does not compromise her diagnostic skills nor her treatment plans. On the contrary, while practicing Western medicine, her patients also benefit from her vast knowledge in Eastern medicine especially acupuncture, and chinese philosophy. Her books, are a must for anybody practicing medicine and for all the rest who are potential patients.

Yeesh..........2004-04-06
This book is living proof that anything can be published, no matter how bad it is. About 3/4 of the stuff in here seems to have been cut-and-pasted from "inspirational" chain e-mails (misspellings intact). The rare original filler is downright incoherent: Sentence fragments, extra/missing punctuation, etc.
As to the theme and content of the book: The authors seemed to know what they wanted to say, but just did not know how to say it... and the result is a baffling presentation of trite platitudes and cop-outs, not worth the effort of unravelling.
Please, please, someone - anyone! - point these authors to a real, professional book editor. I've never seen a manuscript more deserving of one.
