Erwin Panofsky, a preeminent art historian who spent many years teaching at Princeton, wrote these essays originally as public lectures to be delivered to non-academic audiences. And while the material is dense in the sense of being packed with information, it is also entertaining. A notable intellectual romp is the essay, "Ideological Antecedents of the Rolls-Royce Radiator," an eccentric essay remarking on how such influences as cathedral architecture and illuminated manuscripts somehow led to the famous car radiator that Panofsky reveres as the summation of "twelve centuries of Anglo-Saxon preoccupations and aptitudes."

    Book Description

    edited by Irving Lavin

with a memoir by William S. Heckscher

Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) was one of the preeminent art historians of the twentieth century. A new translation of his seminal work, Perspective as Symbolic Form, was recently published by Zone Books; now three remarkable essays, one previously unpublished, place Panofsky's genius in a different perspective: What Is Baroque?, Style and Medium in the Motion Pictures, and The Ideological Antecedents of the Rolls-Royce Radiator. The essays are framed by an introduction by Irving Lavin, Panofsky's successor as Professor of Art History at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, discussing the context of the essays' composition and their signficance within Panofsky's oeuvre, and an insightful memoir by Panofsky's former student, close friend, and fellow emigré, William Heckscher.

All three essays reveal unexpected aspects of Panofsky's sensibility, both personal and intellectual. Originally written as lectures for general audiences, they are composed in a lively, informal manner, and are full of charm and wit. The studies concern broadly defined problems of style in art -- the visual symptoms endemic to works of a certain period (Baroque), medium (film), or national identity (England) -- as opposed to the focus on iconography and subject matter usually associated with Panofsky's "method." The essay on Baroque, which Lavin considers "vintage Panofsky" and which appears here for the first time, and the one on film were written in 1934. The Rolls-Royce piece was written in 1962.

        Book Description

Three volumes from the Getty Museum's popular In Focus series are packaged together here, offering a handsome set of books on these important photographers: Andre Kertesz, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Man Ray. All born in Europe, each photographer journeyed to the United States and made important
contributions to the medium. The volume on Kertesz presents the Getty Museum's holdings of his work from his Budapest, Paris, and New York periods, while the images in the book on Bauhaus teacher Moholy-Nagy include his pioneering photomontages and camera-less "photograms." The Man Ray volume
presents his inventive photographs taken in New York, Paris, and Los Angeles, including portraits and nudes, and his experimental work with Rayographs and solarization. Each volume in the In Focus series contains approximately fifty photographs, with commentaries, an introduction, a chronology, and
a transcription of a colloquium on the photographer's life and work.

        Book Description

The author begins this challenging monograph by probing Modernism's surfaces and subjects, its public and private meanings, in order to establish Johns's importance as the modern allegorical artist in the years after Abstract Expressionism. Yet, Figuring Jasper Johns is not an essay that presumes to offer an instant interpretation. Rather, Fred Orton self-consciously constructs a "Jasper Johns" whose work is introduced and explained in three chapters, each of which addresses a specific picture or sculpture like Flag, Painted Bronze (Savarin) and Untitled 1992. These in-depth studies situate individual works in their social context as well as in Johns's oeuvre.Fred Orton's purpose is to get to terms with – and find terms for – a difficult and elusive body of work by one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars An effort too far in repetitious jargon.......2004-09-23

I found this book to be pretentiously over complexified. The relationship between object and surface has been aptly documented by many other art historians of the late 20thC.
I think that Fred has in this case over analysed too few works by the great artist, flag to me and many of the people I have discussed it with is far too complex a work for a man like Orton to even vaguely comment on critically. He appears to my other academic associates and I to be slightly out of his depth at this level, and in future would do well to perhaps abandon the bottle of Gin which he is widely known to keep under his desk, and to consequently write something worthwhile and not liquer-induced.
Mr Orton, I am not your fan.

          Book Description

One hundred paintings, sculptures and photographs from the collection of the Akron Art Museum are lavishly reproduced and thoughtfully discussed in this volume. A provocative essay on the changing nature of the collection since the Museum's founding introduces the volume. This is followed by one hundred full-page illustrations, each with a brief essay written by either a member of the Museum staff or one of 16 guest authors. The selection of work stresses the collection's three areas of special strength-- turn-of-the-century American painting, painting and sculpture since 1960, and twentieth-century photography. Artists featured include William Merritt Chase, Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Philip Guston, Nancy Graves, Chuck Close, Claes Oldenburg, Lewis Hine, Lee Friedlander, Gilbert & George, Carrie Mae Weems, and Lari Pittman. AUTHORBIO Barbara Tannenbaum is Chief Curator and Head of Public Programs at the Akron Art Museum; Mitchell D. Kahan is its Director.

            Book Description

At Home with Art reconsiders the domestic environment as a context for contemporary art by discussing an exhibition of specially commissioned works that will be made available to the general public at affordable prices. It is in our homes that we express our personal tastes, yet as a place for the display of works of art the home has become marginalized in favor of public and institutional spaces. As a challenge to this stererotypical view, nine of Britain's leading sculptors--Angela Bulloch, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Permindar Kaur, David Mach, Richard Wentworth, and Alison Wilding--have been commissioned to design multiples which will be manufactured and made available in stores throughout England. At Home with Art documents the project in progress and includes an essay by curator Colin Painter. The texts are supplemented by photographs of the artists' drawings, prototypes, and finished objects.

              5 out of 5 stars A Trip Through the Life's Work of a Grown-up Kid, Eduardo Paolozzi.......2006-12-20

A lad from Scotland is sent by his Italian butcher Parents for summers to an idyllic nautical-theme children's camp run by Mussolini's Blackshirts. That artist was to become U.K.'s Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. Somehow, he just had to turn out different. One of Britain's finest working sculptors, there is nothing tepid about his multimedia work. A key participant in Britain's pivotal collective art enterprise, the Independent Group, Paolozzi continues to amaze. "Eduado Paolozzi: Writings and Interviews" allows the artist to speak directly to us. We are almost unaware of the deft work by editor, Robin Spencer---just as it should be.

When a workman's skill and intellect is fused with a talented child. we get Paolozzi. Attractively designed and fresh enough to offer an unblemished look into this very unstuffy work by Britain's leading artistic maverick (deceased 2005). "Eduardo Paolozzi; Writings and Interviews" shows us just how that came to pass. The illustrations and documents chosen offer a wide. often intimate view, into a brilliant creative artist's daily practice, and wide range of art production.

"This is a strong and intelligent work on a controversial topic. Emberley's book is much more intellectually sophisticated than anything else I've seen on this subject."--Valerie Steele, Editor, Fashion Theory

"Julia Emberley's book is a complex, wide-ranging, and fascinating feminist critique of the history and meaning of fur and fashion. Particularly unique is her integration of indigenous voices into the debates."--Lucy Lippard, author of The Pink Glass Swan: Selected Feminist Essays on Art

Fur has been sparking controversies ever since sumptuary laws marked it as a luxury item and as a sign of medieval class privilege. Drawing on wide-ranging historical and contemporary sources, Julia V. Emberley explains how a material good has become both a symbol of wealth and sexuality, and a symptom of class, gender, and imperial antagonisms.

                      Book Description

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall many East German writers were praised in the Western world as dissident voices of truth, bravely struggling with the draconian constraints of living under the GDR's communist regime. However, since unification, Germany has been rocked by scandals showing the level to which the Stasi, the East German Secret Police, controlled these same writers. This is the first study in English to systematically explore how the writers have responded to the challenge of dealing with the Stasi from the 1950s to the present day.

I enjoyed this book, but thought it could be a little bit longer. I liked the part where Freeza got sliced up by his own energy disk. The best warrior in the universe did suicide!!! It was fun reading for any Dragon Ball Z fans.

5 out of 5 stars First Appearance of the BEST DBZ character.......2005-01-17

Freeza has escaped Namek and is coming to Earth. With Goku not back from Namek yet, the Z-fighters know that things are hopeless, yet they decide to die fighting. Our heroes are in more trouble than they thought. Another power, strong like Freeza's is coming to earth. It is Freeza's father, King Cold. Will Goku come back to a planet riddled with destruction?

As the Z-fighters believe that it is truly hopeless now, a mysterious boy wearing a Capsule Corporation jacket comes from nowhere to challenge Freeza and King Cold. What is he thinking? The only way he can have a chance is by turning into a Super Saiyan, and there is no way that can happen. Whoops. Spoke too soon. Trunks has turned into a Super Saiyan. As the heroes rejoice to the defeat of the evil in the universe, it is cut short by the boy's prediction of doom. The Red Ribbon Androids want revenge against Goku for stopping the plans for world domination held by the Red Ribbon Army (see Dragon Ball 5-8).
Can three years of training be enough to stop the Androids that destroyed Trunks' timeline?

5 out of 5 stars #12 lives up to the name Dragonball Z.......2004-07-16

This book,(like the other 11 before it) is amazing. However their is one bad thing about this book... it's the last one that I need to complete my set because after this book, all of the rest of them are in shonen jump (which I also highly recommend). So now that I have 1-12 I have decided to start reading dragonball. If Dragonball is ANYTHING like the Dragonball Z manga then it must be amazing. All there is else to say is congratulations Akira Toriyama for such an amazing creation!

5 out of 5 stars DBZ #12 is the best!.......2003-10-20

This might be my favorite DBZ manga yet since Trunks is my favorite character. It starts when Freiza's gets cut in half and Goku nearly escapes Planet Nameks distruction. After that Frezia appears with King Cold. Just in time Trunks shows up and destroys Freiza and his father. Goku comes back and Trunks tells him that he came from the future and about the androids. Read it! The manga is much better than the TV show.

Mirai no Trunks, or Future Trunks, shows up in the new DBZ volume, making the coolest character debut in any anime or manga in existence! The Frieza saga finally ends, and the Androids/Cell saga begin with this volume, as Trunks gives Goku a warning of danger(ps, that's also the title of a DBZ song). So, the Z-senshi, including Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Chaozu, who all come back from the dead in this volume, train for three years. What will they face?! Will the training be enough? Find out, as the sequel to the original DB Red Ribbon Army story begins!

You can't beat her book - Enough, Dammit: A Cynic's Guide to Finally Getting What You Want out of Life.

And the other title How to Be Happy, Dammit: A Cynic's Guide to Spiritual Happiness - is pretty good.

This one unless you are a collector, I would avoid. Somehow the other two work, even though there is a lot of design to them, the content is really good.

I personally think that the design will date itself rather quickly.

But then she can just do a new layout with same content.

This book is a wonderful booster for those in need of a boost! I loved the concepts for getting me to think about my fears in new ways so they seemed less frightening. The book is a great merging of humor and real (POWERFUL!) psychological insights that really, really work! I totally recommend this book...along with Ms. Salmansohn's HOW TO BE HAPPY, DAMMIT!
