                Book Description

Fantagraphics's latest volume collecting one of America's true national treasures, Krazy Kat. In 2002, Fantagraphics embarked on a publishing plan to reintroduce the greatest strip of the first-half of the 20th Century (the Peanuts of its era) to a public that has largely never seen it: this volume is the fourth in a long-term plan to chronologically reprint strips from the prime of Herriman's career, most of which have not seen print since originally running in newspapers 75 years ago. Each volume is edited by the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum's Bill Blackbeard, the world's foremost authority on early 20th Century American comic strips, and designed by Jimmy Corrigan author Chris Ware, who may well go down as the best cartoonist of the 21st Century.

Krazy & Ignatz 1931-1932 will be a hot-baked brickbat of a volume, adance with nearly two full years of the Sunday Krazy Kat (Herriman did not use color until 1935), snug between multiple pages of Herriman extras, including two premiere appearances of Krazy from 1909, never before reprinted; a sports page panorama of graphic fun with the French boxing champion, Georges Carpentier; two extremely frank daily strip revelations about Krazy's dubious gender; several gag cartoons from the early days of the last century; vignettes of the Coconino Kast of Kharacters drawn for Kat fans; and a first-time-ever reprint of Gilbert Seldes' second article on Krazy, written in 1935 for Esquire, two decades after his seminal piece in The Seven Lively Arts, with komments by Bill Blackbeard; plus an introduction by Blackbeard detailing the miraculous recovery of many of the Sunday pages in this volume from apparent newspaper oblivion, a new Debaffler page, and a stunning layout front and back and throughout by the inimitable Chris Ware!

Krazy Kat is a love story, focusing on the relationships of its three main characters. Krazy Kat adored Ignatz Mouse. Ignatz Mouse just tolerated Krazy Kat, except for recurrent onsets of targeting tumescence, which found expression in the fast delivery of bricks to Krazy's cranium. Offisa Pup loved Krazy and sought to protect "her" (Herriman always maintained that Krazy was gender-less) by throwing Ignatz in jail. Each of the characters was ignorant of the others' true motivations, and this simple structure allowed Herriman to build entire worlds of meaning into the actions, building thematic depth and sweeping his readers up by the looping verbal rhythms of Krazy & Co.'s unique dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars But the strips were in black and white..........2005-06-28

Not to nitpick too much, but Herriman didn't use color in his Sundays until (I believe) 1935. The comics are reprinted here smaller than the original full-page size; to reprint the comics that large would require an oversized folio that would cost many times as much and not fit on most shelves. Not that it wouldn't be neat.

                1 out of 5 stars Poorly reproduced, a disservice.......2005-06-21

Produced entirely in black & white, and with very small images. The original was in color & about twice the size. There is really nothing to hold your interest, visually. This will turn people off to Krazy Kat. I sent my copy back.

5 out of 5 stars "How stipendous is the possibility of a egg".......2004-05-28

Fantagraphics delivers again. The greatest comic ever published is getting its due thanks to this series (taken over from the now defunct Eclipse series). Once again the book is crammed with great Krazy Kat full page strips (keeping in step with the series previous three volumes). Comics were at one time far more complex, as a simple head poke into this book will reveal. These aren't your average four panel "I hate Mondays" gag strips. These involve reading, not glancing. Herriman was a master at his trade, and dialects, puns, non-sequiturs, nonsense, changing backgrounds, slapstick, and poignancy pervade every page. There's nothing like this on the incredibly shrinking comics page of today.

If you've never read Krazy Kat, here's some background: Krazy is a Kat (yes, with a "K", that's very important); Ignatz is a mouse; Offica Pupp is a dog (who also happens to be a cop). These three folks live in Cocino County, where Ignatz fulfills his greatest desire of flinging bricks at Krazy Kat's head. It's not so simple as "BANG!! HAHAHA!" Krazy LOVES Ignatz (pines for him) and since Ignatz only showers attention on Krazy in the form of a brick, Krazy has come to interpret this as an act of love. If you see a little heart rising from Krazy's head after Ignatz "beans" Krazy's head, this is why. Three is of course more fun, and Offica Pupp makes the triangle complete. Offisa Pupp has something for Krazy (though it's not as obvious as the other trist). Consequently, Offisa Pupp detests Ignatz for throwing bricks at Krazy. Ignatz is often seen being dragged off to jail protesting his innocence while Krazy rhapsodizes about his "'lil dahlink!" If this doesn't sound like good reading to you, then you obviously haven't read the strip. Give it at least a few chances; it takes some time to sink in. It's easier to experience than to explain. You can't read this strip vicariously.

This installment has an amazing bonus - a boatload of Krazy Kat daily strips from 1931. Previous volumes have included interesting miscellany from the past (pictures of an Ignatz figure, or piano music for the "Krazy Kat" rag), but this is almost too much to ask for. Krazy Kat dailies are harder to find in print than the Sunday pages (will Fantagraphics take on the daily strips when they're through with the Sundays?), so this is a welcome bonus. And the book is HUGE! The strips are very readable, and the dailies are VERY readable. Also included is an article about George Herriman's early cartoon career, along with some of his earliest strips from 1909-1910 (Baron Mooch and Gooseberry Sprig). There are some fascinating facts here: Charles Dickens considered art to be an integral part of his novels (wouldn't know that today!), and Cocino County was actually created for an early strip of Herriman's, not for Krazy Kat.

May Fantagraphics march on and chronicle all that there is to chronicle of Krazy Kat. Fans of "both high art and low culture" (taken from a review on the back of the book) appreciate it to an infinity squared degree.

In the course of a single, wild weekend, the narrator of Knick Knack Paddy Whack tells us his dismal life story, and offers his opinions about practically everything. With a chip on his shoulder the size of Northern Ireland, Patrick Scully seems to loathe everyone else, too, including his family, girlfriend, and best mate. As we learn, this sworn foe of positive thinking originally hails from small-town Castlecock, where "you don't exist unless people are talking about you, good, bad, or indifferent." His account of the Scully clan--who appreciate little but a good game of football and the gory details of a neighbor's illness--makes his constant cynicism all the more comical (and explicable). It also illustrates exactly why Patrick would rather do anything than be at home:
I'd stay in the front room, switch on Radio Luxembourg on my pocket transistor and glue it to my ear.... The squealing and hissing and crackling I had to put up with sounded like someone deep-fat frying a herd of live pigs. But at the end of the day a migraine was a small price to pay for escape from the duelling harbingers of doom in the kitchen.
Having escaped Castlecock for Dublin, Patrick now works as a security guard, steals from his boss, and habitually puts away one too many pints. On its own, this disgruntled Dubliner's voice might begin to wear thin. But Ardal O'Hanlon has alternated Patrick's rants with some poignant diary entries by his girlfriend, Francesca--and these dual narratives add up to a seamless, suspenseful story, which should keep the reader unnerved to the very end. --Melissa Asher

                Book Description

In this darkly mischievous first novel by Irish comedian Ardal O'Hanlon, youthful rage and rebellion are up front, but far off-center-a Catcher in the Rye for the modern set.

Patrick Scully, the nineteen-year-old narrator of this brilliantly observed tale of frustrations and dreams, is stuck in a dead-end job in Dublin while his friends pursue useless degrees at the university. Needing a break from Dublin and from his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Francesca Kelly, he escapes for a weekend to his hometown where he hooks up with his childhood chum, Xavier "Balls" O'Reilly. The two of them embark on a two-day spree of drinking and depravity that comes to a sobering end when Scully returns to Francesca's empty apartment. There he finds that she, as we learn in chapters from her diary, is more interested in Balls than she would want anyone-especially Scully-to know. Laced with hilarious small-town wit, this gripping first novel builds to a shocking climax as Scully's insight into the duplicity of his so-called friends becomes more than he can bear.

Disturbingly funny, Knick Knack Paddy Whack places Ardal O'Hanlon among the best of the new breed of Irish writers.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I love Ardal even more!.......2005-02-11

I am a big fan of the TV show 'Father Ted' that Ardal was on so I decided to check this book out. I LOVED it. I think my knowledge of Irish slang ('crack' means 'a good time')and humour helped me to enjoy it as much as I did. I found it very funny. It is by no means light, but it's very witty and insightful.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven, but worth a read for the ambiance.......2004-01-16

No, I never have seen "Father Ted." So, I came to this novel neither hot nor cold towards its author. The protagonist reminds me of a younger version of Garda (policeman) Paddy Coyne in Hugo Hamilton's Dublin novels, "Headbanger" and "Sad Bastard," in its conveyance of contemporary Irish attitudes and language. Sorry, it ain't Barry Fitzgerald for those taken aback at such youthful invective.

This could've been a much better long-short story, or a novella. Much of the writing is too casual, even coming from its post-adolescent characters, and I guess the lucrative (!) nature of putting out a novel rather than a story adds to the padded feel of the plot and descriptions. Francesca's story does have, however, a different attitude and diction that works well to balance off of Patrick's, and the shifts add to the appeal the novel does manage to sustain.

It's slow going for the first 40% of the book, and it only picks up nearing the finish. Even there, the energy's dissipated into a curiously tame conclusion; I wonder if a sequel's in the works?

                3 out of 5 stars Ardal, I was disappointed.......2003-06-29

Oh it had potential, it really did! If only he had gone through it a bit more, cleaned up a bit of the grammar and etc., we'd have quite a good piece before us. Ardal, I am disappointed.

                5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2001-11-14

I first became introduced to Ardal O'Hanlon through the Father Ted BBC series. I found him to be very witty and his delivery was right on the mark every time! When I found out he had written a book I was dying to read it. I wasn't disappointed. I found myself not being able to put the book down. I won't go into details about the story (you can read the other reviews for that). I will simply state that I enjoyed the book and it carried me away for a few hours while reading it. It is funny, sad, depressing, enlightening, thorough and complete. You don't often find so many levels in one story. Definitely recommended. By the way, if you haven't seen the Father Ted series check out the DVD! You will laugh non-stop!

4 out of 5 stars A good first book by a talented comedian.......2001-02-17

When I started reading this book I found it hard to put it down...picking it up at every free moment I had and continueing to read on. I must admit, though, that the "shocking conclusion" didn't actually shock very much, but for Ardal's first book it was very good. Will deffinately check out future books by this irish comedian!

                  2 out of 5 stars Uninspired.......2001-11-28

Irish comic O'Hanlon has written a largely unmemorable coming of age novel starring the entirely unsympathetic and creepy 18-year-old Patrick. He works as a security guard in Dublin and periodically takes the bus to his home hamlet on weekends, allowing the reader a glimpse into both city and small town life in early '80s Ireland. While certain set pieces and milieus are descriptively evoked, the overall story of the ethically confused boy and his relationship with college student Francesca doesn't really hold together. The novel is more effective when it breaks off into excerpts from Franceca's diary, detailing her side of their relationship. However, this too, is problematic, as you know that eventually Patrick will be reading it, and only bad things will result. All in all, it lacks the humor I had expected, and is very bleak. Elements of it are highly reminiscent of The Butcher Boy.

This is Ardal O'Hanlon's debut novel. I say debut, because I hope that it is not the last that he writes. O'Hanlon's talents stretch far beyond the playing of Father Dougal Macguire in Channel 4's cult comedy, Father Ted. As befitting the novel of a comedian, this is a highly humorous read. However, this is black, cynical comedy of the highest order. Unlike Father Dougal, there's nothing dim or cute about this book, which plumbs the depths of darkest despair. It is the story of Patrick Scully, a young Irishman in early Eighties Dublin, and of his mounting rage at the incomprehensible world which springs up around him. The novel benefits a great deal from the structure that O'Hanlon has created. Part of the novel derives from the diary of Francesca, Scully's girlfriend, and provides a powerful insight into how Scully is seen by others. Here, Scully is truly from Mars, and Francesca from Venus, and their stormy relationship could fuel any number of Self-help books. I was particularly impressed by the portrayal of Francesca, whom O'Hanlon imbues with a real depth of character. There are a few moments of caricature, namely Scully's mother, but even she has a certain amount of truth. "The Talk of the Town" is one of the best reads I've had this year, and the novel certainly lives up to its name.

This is like "The Butcher Boy", only funnier. A great read, Ardal's comic talent shines through. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Introductory Irish Lingo!.......1999-11-08

As a newcomer to Ireland, I was particularly interested in the colloquiums. I was hooked from page 1 and found myself wanting to laugh out very loud at the conversations the diverse range of characters had. This was unfortunately difficult to do as often I would be reading it on the bus to work!

                  4 out of 5 stars Surprising - gripping - strong - tight - an excellent read.......1998-09-06

Here are the views expressed by the `Julie Gallagher Book Club', 4th September 98.

Sean - This book took me by surprise. The characters, locations & period were very convincing. I only hope he has another book inside him.

Julie - I thought I would not like it, but after the first few chapters, I was gripped! Ardal was brilliant writing from Francesca's point of view. I was convinced by his understanding of women. I'm still thinking about the story.

Clare - A very good book. For a first novel this is excellent. I doubt he will be able to follow it up because it seems like such a strong autobiography. It is a life that so many people are living, in small towns, with small-town mentalities.

Sandra - An interesting read. I enjoyed the addition of Francesca's diary to get a female perspective on Patrick's story. It struck me that Patrick was extremely unhappy with his lot in life. However, he did seem to have potential, but was not prepared to strive to achieve it. Finally, the overall book was quite tight, except the ending seemed to be a bit weak.

Fiona - Well written and easy to read. I could not take to the main character at all - not a pleasant chap at all! the end of the book came really suddenly.....

Vinny - A very tight limited plot. The two points of view were well conceived and very well written. A most enjoyable read.

Jane - An insight into Irish life, very good descriptions.

It isn't obvious from anything on this page, but this is a cassette. Not the end of the world, but kind of low-fi. I'm sure I'll get around to converting it someday, but it would be nicer to not have to.

Of course, the main thing is the comedy which is pretty solid. Ardal mainly does observational humor with a bit of an absurd twist. Unfortunately, he tends to be a visual comedian - I mean, I can laugh just to look at him - so you miss out on his facial expressions, but there are few bits that are solely visual gags. You hear uproarious laughter from the audience, but they don't work with only the aural experience.

Also, a number of the bits are topical and therefore kind of dated (Michael Flatley jokes) That isn't so much of a complaint, but more of an observation, because ultimately they are funny, but it doesn't have that "timeless" feel to it.

So, if you are an Ardal nut and don't mind time warp technology, go right ahead, but others beware the limitations.

This stand up is fantastic! If ever you've wished that you could watch a truly great comedian, then this is for you. There's no pretention or highbrow jokes designed to make you think...just good ol' fun. Oh, and if you hate Michael flatly, this is definately for you!!
