Customer Reviews:
Organized around the four Ps--Planning, Producing, Polishing, and Presenting.......2006-10-07
The planning section covers word clusters, venn diagrams, and outlines.
The producing section covers building paragraphs, dialogue, clarity, passive voice, headings, audience, citing sources, footnotes, generalizations, and an interesting "use of poet's tools" section. The poet's tools include metaphors, similes, imagery, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, and rhyming patterns. I especially appreciated the footnotes part of this section as it was very thorough and is usually not covered in pre-college style books. The end of the producing section covers writing plays and scripts, which was interesting to me.
The polishing section covers common grammar mistakes, punctuation, verb tenses, spelling mistakes, and word misuse. I found this section very well-done and thorough.
The presenting section covers uniform formatting, spacing, pagination, tables, headings, sections, and an extremely thorough coverage of bibliographies and citations.
This is one of the Scholastic writing guides, which are very concise, take up little shelf space, but are presented clearly and in an easy-to-read manner suitable for children and adults.

Engaging.......2007-09-11
I read this book in trying to find one that might interest my son. It was just what I needed. My son loves hunting and fishing. He enjoys reading when the right material comes along. Hatched grabbed his attention and we have had Gary Paulsen books in our home ever since. It is a book about living in the wilderness and all that that entails. There is no offensive language or explicit language which has ruined many a good book. I recommend this to those who love the outdoors.
Great for youngsters.......2007-09-07
My 15 year-old goddaughter suggested that I read Hatchet. Clearly it is written for a young audience. I thought it was very, very good, adventurous, and a page turner. It's a story of success under very adverse circulstances. I've since given Hatchet as gifts to youngsters.
Teachers love Hatchet!.......2007-09-02
Brian Robeson, a thirteen-year old boy, is traveling to visit his father who was recently divorced from Brian's mother. The small plane he travels in crashes, killing the pilot and leaving Brian as the only survivor in the Canadian wilderness. The book documents his struggle for survival and dealing with his emotions.
Hatchet remains one of my favorite children's books-one that I felt compelled to read every spare minute until finished. Teachers continually laud this book not only for it's enjoyable reading, but for its many themes-divorce, survival, courage, resourcefulness, determination, confidence, self-esteem. It's also a great learning tool to teach different reading comprehension strategies.
A Must-Read Book.......2007-06-27
And that about says it. Gripping narrative, a quick read, a book about discovery and growth into self-reliance. The Brothers Karamazov it ain't, but this is a book every child and every adult should read.
Classic.......2007-06-17
I read this when it first came out in 87 when I was a kid. I remember it being a great book. I would highly recommend for young readers as it inspires young people to believe in themselves.
Amazon.com
Every kid thinks about running away at one point or another; few get farther than the end of the block. Young Sam Gribley gets to the end of the block and keeps going--all the way to the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. There he sets up house in a huge hollowed-out tree, with a falcon and a weasel for companions and his wits as his tool for survival. In a spellbinding, touching, funny account, Sam learns to live off the land, and grows up a little in the process. Blizzards, hunters, loneliness, and fear all battle to drive Sam back to city life. But his desire for freedom, independence, and adventure is stronger. No reader will be immune to the compulsion to go right out and start whittling fishhooks and befriending raccoons.
Jean Craighead George, author of more than 80 children's books, including the Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves, created another prizewinner with My Side of the Mountain--a Newbery Honor Book, an ALA Notable Book, and a Hans Christian Andersen Award Honor Book. Astonishingly, she wrote its sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, 30 years later, and a decade after that penned the final book in the trilogy, Frightful's Mountain, told from the falcon's point of view. George has no doubt shaped generations of young readers with her outdoor adventures of the mind and spirit. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

By: Nicholas MB 5th grade My Side of the Mountain.......2007-09-26
My Side of the Mountain is a very catching book it had me jumping out of my seat the whole story!. It told you some facts about the wild and also it had a sad story of a kid living off the land. I learned alot of facts about the Catscill Mountains too. I think evrey outdoor kid should read this thrilling book. Its truth, fiction and wildlife mixed! This is truly one of my favorite books. READ THIS BOOK!
Yeah for Sam Gribley.......2007-09-14
My Side of the Mountain is a great book. Jean Craighead George must have spent a lot of time in the forest. Her descriptions of the landscape and anecdotes regarding the animals are vivid. The only thing that doesn't ring true is the fact that a young kid goes and lives on his own in the wild and no adults appear to be concerned. A very enjoyable read.
My Side of the Mountain 1959.......2007-08-15
Plot Kernel - A young boy runs off to live in the Catskill Mountain wilderness, taking nothing but a penknife, a ball of cord, an axe, $40, and some flint and steel. He fashions a home within a standing hemlock tree, makes clothing out of animal skins, and eats only what he can catch or harvest from the Earth. He trains a falcon to hunt, and lives with it for an entire year.
Nature Kid.......2007-07-10
This was a good book, in my opinion. My favorite part was in the middle, when Sam has just survived his first winter in the Catskills. It was very good when he had just realized that he could survive alone in the forest wthout aid.
-Emma D. (for a school project)
My Side deserves a five star rating.......2007-06-05
My Side of the Mountain is a thrilling cliffhanger. I loved the end of each chapter it left you felling happiness or surprised. But especially thinking about the chapter you just read. It had very descriptive writing. Jean Craighead George is a great descriptive writer. I would recommend this book to every single one of my friends. It is a terrific book. I give it FIVE STARS!!!
Book Description
With over two hundred dramatic situations, this volume is by far the most extensive sourcebook available for nurturing young actors' improvisational work. The range is vast. Sandra Caruso includes everything from beloved classics to folk and fairy tales to modern realism and contemporary stories, facilitating improvisational work of equal variety. Additionally, the book structures situations in such a way that children work in greater depth than theatre games usually require. Teachers, parents, directors, and producers can focus on actors' development, helping children release interesting and unexpected shades of characterization and uncover unexplored psychological depths.
While many books on creative drama are geared to a younger age group, this book is divided into two volumes to address a broad range of students, from childhood to adolescence. The material has increasing degrees of complexity and can be used with any young actor, whatever his or her level of experience.
Customer Reviews:
Brings you inside the characters.......2001-08-17
This book was excellent. It really makes you think and go inside the character. It would be a perfect total of five stars if it had more improvisation ideas for one person. Other than that, it great. I really liked it, and if you take a drama class, I recommend you bring it with you for the whole class to share--but make sure nobody tries to [take] it!

Great Stars of the Broadway Musical.......2005-04-20
Fans of the Broadway musical and costume design will love these paper dolls. The illustrations are wonderful.
Among the highlights are Eve Arden, Elaine Stritch, Bernadette Peters and the gorgeous Diahann Carroll, as well as the costumes from "The King and I" and "Evita".
I wasn't so sure about the likenesses of Lena Horne and Carol Burnett.
I would have preferred it if the book had been chronologically divided into two volumes so that each star could have been outfitted with more outfits.
