Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830) was the most gifted and successful British portrait painter in the generation following Gainsborough and Reynolds, and his pre-eminence was confirmed by his election as President of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1820. Yet Lawrence’s work has often been dismissed as flashy and meretricious. This beautifully illustrated, eloquently written, and comprehensive account reverses that view, demonstrating that Lawrence was an intelligent, hard-working, and profoundly conscientious artist.
The book is the first sustained study of Lawrence’s work in many years, and the first ever to look closely at his highly accomplished drawings as well as his paintings. Michael Levey has produced a delightful biography of Sir Thomas Lawrence, one of the greatly underappreciated English artists of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Lawrence, who was highly acclaimed both in Britain and on the Continent during his lifetime, swiftly fell in estimation among art critics after his death in 1830. Levey's prose and the excellent reproductions that accompany his text should go a long way to helping reestablish Lawrence's reputation. Levey's discussion of Lawrence's drawings along is well worth one's time.

Waxing poetic on TE Lawrence.......2007-01-09
Sir Liddel-Hart knew TE personally and admired him greatly. Liddel-Hart began this work as a general work on the Arab revolt but ended up waxing poetic about his longtime friend and hero. At times it may be a bit too gushing but the fact that TE was an incredible individual is without dispute and Sir Liddel Hart would not be the first to succumb to hero-worship. TE Lawrence's story is one with many lessons about a people who have grown weary with being ignored by the world. TE Lawrence saw himself as a savior of sorts for such peoples in the Arab world. His contributions to irregular warfare are numerous and Sir Liddel Hart is the perfect choice to bring those lessons to us in describing the life of Lawrence. The language is grand and sweeping making it an easy and enjoyable read while telling us much about the life and campaigns of TE Lawrence. A great resource for anyone interested in his life or in his contributions to military history.
Firsthand account.......2005-08-10
While not the best biography on the subject (that honor would go to John Mack's A Prince of Our Disorder), this account, while laudatory in the extreme, has the advantage of having been written by someone who actually knew Lawrence, and who had his subject's input. If it sound at times like a Boy's Own Adventure volume, it also has the immediacy which many other accounts lack, and one gets the feeling that Liddell Hart harbored a deep admiration for his subject.
An Insight into Modern War.......2005-07-23
I strongly recommend this book. Unlike most of the bio related books you can read on Lawrence, this one is dedicated to how he waged war (and written by an expert in warfare). Lawrence's methods were so advanced that they resonate to this day. For example, he developed methods of system disruption that incapactitated a "modern" army and threw an empire into disorder. You can see these methods in play today in modern Iraq. Well worth the time you spend.
A well-written, hero-worshipping work on TEL........1999-03-21
Liddell's book is enjoyable and well-written. However, it was written prior before a lot of relavent material on T.E. Lawrence was made public. Mack's biography of Lawrence (PRINCE OF OUR DISORDER) is much more comprehensive. All in all, however, it is a book well-worth reading for anyone interested in tracing the entire evolution of T.E. Lawrence's legend/story.

I love art history and I got some old prints of these paintings. However, I wanted to learn more about them. After much time and research I finally came across this book. It helped me out more then any other resource. I fell in love with it when I read it. It answered all my questions I had about the paintings, like why they are displayed together even though they were painted by different artists? or, Who was bluleboy and pinkie? The book also touches on other paintings by the same artists, which I found helpful and made me want to learn more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves art, or art-history. It would be a good source for art-history teachers too!

Good primer for visiting Guizhou.......2002-12-28
Guizhou is a fascinating area to see the culture of some of China's ethnic minorities, having visited the province twice recently myself, but there are too few books in English on this province.
Gina Corrigan's book is a must for anyone who wants an understanding of the culture and history of the colourful people here. The book is well organized into different parts of Guizhou, with lots of sugested itineraries. It also gives an excellent overview of the different ethnic groups and its customs.
This is by no means a comprehensive book on Guizhou. That would require a size many times this one. There are just too many hidden corners to explore. There are places in the book that I wish for more specific details. The book is also thin on pratical information such as buses, trains, hotel lists. The Lonely planet SW China Guide would be a workable complement for that.
There are some beautiful photos in the book. Even if you don;t plan on visiting the area soon, it still makes a very interesting book to read.
Good guide for a remote province.......1998-12-28
I normally don't like Odyssey guidebooks, but a Chinese friend gave me their guidebook to Guizhou when I was undecided where to go on holiday. On the basis of it, I decided to visit the province as part of a three-week trip out of Beijing to South China. The book has excellent photos, but was light in areas on how-to details. I used it in tandem with Lonely Planet's guide to China, and the two complimented each other nicely. I only spent 10 days in Guizhou, which wasn't enough. I'm heading back someday, and will use the guide to festival dates in the book to better plan my visit.

Before Joe Sacco crafted his two major works of "cartoon journalism," Palestine and Safe Area Gorazde, he created a number of shorter pieces, ranging from one-page gags to 30-page "graphic novelettes." This massive book finally collects the entirety of Sacco's earlier journalistic and autobiographical work, plus a sizable serving of his satirical strips, many of them never before collected in book form.
The centerpieces in Notes from a Defeatist are a triptych of war stories: "When Good Bombs Happen to Bad People," a history of aerial bombing that specifically targets civilian populations; "More Women, More Children, More Quickly," in which Sacco relates his mother's harrowing experiences during World War II in Malta; and, most personally (and closest to Sacco's later work), "How I Loved the War," Sacco's impassioned but sardonic reflection on the Gulf War, the surrounding propaganda and media circus, and his own ambivalent feelings as both a spectator and commentator: The book derives its title from this sequence, which has acquired a painful new relevance in the past half-year. Notes from a Defeatist also includes a roadie's-eye view of an American punk band's eventful European tour, a reminiscence of an awful season spent in his native Malta, and much more.
Notes from a Defeatist is a fantastic primer to Sacco's work. Sacco's last two books, Safe Area Gorazde and Palestine, have earned international acclaim and accolades from such sources as Edward W. Said, Christopher Hitchens, Time, The New York Times Book Review, and The Washington Post.

This book, makes you truely proud to be a southerner. And it makes you proud to be a man. Lewis says what's on his mind. You may not always agree. Some may find in funny, and some will find it obnoxious. I agreed with every one of his views and all I have to say is, that it's about time someone said some of this!!! A truley touching and humorous book.
