The late Isaac Asimov (1920 - 1992) is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi writers. He is of the old "hard sci-fi" school that populated the `50s and a successful member of that community by the way.

"El Sol Desnudo" ("The Naked Sun") has been translated to Spanish more than once. Unfortunately no detail of this edition is given, yet if you are a Spanish reader (and sci-fi fan) give this book a try.
This story is the second step in the long friendship between the earthling New York detective Elijah Baley and the robot detective R. Daneel Olivaw. You don't need to read "The Caves of Steel" to understand this one, it is almost a stand alone book.

Situated in a far future Earth, Humankind has divided into Spacers who dwell scattered in fifty worlds (and are the rich & advanced society) and Earthlings that remain in the Mother World, inhabiting overcrowded underground cities. Both groups distrust and despise each other.
A murder occurred in Solaria an Outer World. Elijah is put in charge of the investigation due to his success in the previous investigation.
Once again he will team with R. Daneel.
Here different phobias interact conditioning the development of the events.
Bailey is terrorized to be outside of he caves. From that fact derives the title of the novel as the Naked Sun is almost unbearable to stand for him.
The Solarians avoid direct contact with other humans. They interact thru holographic system and are surrounded and served by robots that do not look like humans.
In this isolation context murder is very difficult to commit. Nevertheless when committed is yet more difficult to solve. Well that is the task of our heroes!

On this background Asimov, once again, construct a many layered novel. At one level is a classical detective's story at another one a study on alien cultures interacting. In yet another level is psychological approach to phobias.
In a classical Asimovan way, each chapter introduces new elements and characters to the action until at last everything squares to a satisfactory ending.

Both partners will continue their adventures and mystery solving in "Robots of Dawn". R. Daneel will resurface at the closing volumes of the "Foundation" saga.
One more detail about this novel, the author after writing it stopped writing sci-fi novel for almost fifteen years, dedicating his efforts to write non-fiction on several subjects as physics, history and paleontology amongst others.

Crumb!.......2006-08-02

I think it is useful to have seen the documentary "Crumb", to enjoy his work. He is an amazingly confessional artist who has turned his own obsessions and fantasies into a an amazing career. It doesn't get any better than that.

Great Introduction to Crumb.......2005-07-12

This was the first Crumb comic collection I have purchased. I had read about him for years, I always had it on the backburner to get some of his stuff, but never got around to it. I made a mistake in waiting, but it was worth the wait. Crumb is the rare combination of great storyteller and artist. I have the feeling I will read this collection several times, the first time to enjoy the stories, and the next several consecutive times to absorb the great artwork.
'My Troubles With Women' documents Crumbs sexual 'proclivities' from a young lad riding women's legs, high school crushes on Amazonian girls that other boys called 'fat', to comic groupies that Crumb lives out all his thick thighs/bubble butt fantasies with. It's all terribly interesting stuff.
The only low point in this collection is the inclusion of comics that were collaboration with his wife. His wife's forte is not comics, maybe she is an artist, but this is not her medium. Her drawings are flat and uninspired when compared to Crumb's style. Plus the dialog is ham handed and boring. It was a real chore trying to slog through these pages. I guess the "...troubles with Women" include the wife, but the husband and wife stuff seems out of place in this collection.

Twisted & Funny.......2004-05-14

This compilation book contains ten previously published R. Crumb comics. It's a soft cover book, but it's sturdy because of its sewn-in binding, thick cover, and thicker-than-normal pages. I found the book to be humorous in how it comments on the social structure of society and it was also funny in a twisted sort of way. Through the course of the book, you will discover some of the reasons behind R. Crumb's bizarre sexual fantasies. If you never really fit in while going to school up through high school, you will be able to relate to Crumb's sense of isolation and jealousy over the "in-crowd."

Throughout "My Troubles With Women" you will find Crumb leering at and interacting with his ideal woman which is "built like a brick (out)house." Crumb is literally obsessed with women who have thick thighs and big derrieres. Additionally, there are some pornographic pictures, though I wouldn't really describe the book as a book of pornography.

Three of the ten comics are combined efforts between Crumb and his wife, Aline. I didn't like these three as much because I don't like the style of his wife's art and it is more about family and marriage situations which weren't as interesting to me. My favorite comic had to be "Footsy" which I found hilarious and nostalgic. "Footsy" delves into some situations where Crumb got a big thrill from playing footsy in school and later playing footsy in meetings for an underground comic book. Darker depredations are explored midway through the book as Crumb finds that women are attracted to him as an artist and underground figure.

The book was definitely an entertaining read; I chuckled and laughed out loud many times. I would have liked it better if the publisher added page numbers and if all the comics were exclusively Crumb's sole work - if the latter were fulfilled I probably would have given it five stars.

Crumb is fun and sick.......2003-03-18

Crumb, as I got to know through the fantastic documentary of his life, is one messed up dude. His book, a collection of his relationship cartoons, is often quite funny and a little sick. It was a bit much to read in one sitting, but his strongest critic is himself and he does have some good insights into human nature. He is an odd dude, but it was worth a read.

I bought this for my teenage daughter. She has been enjoying it as she has others in the Imponderables series.

Seems like they ran out of good ideas a few books ago. Most of the answers went around in circles and never really got to the point.

Answering life's deeper questions..........2005-06-09

The Imponderables book series by David Feldman is the pinnacle of interesting and useful bathroom reading! Since the beginning of the series, Feldman has been highlighting questions that we didn't even know we had (like exactly why is it that a mile is 5,280 feet? and where is Donald Duck's brother?) then he finds "the experts" on any given subject to answer the question. At the end of each question and answer, you are left with a little better insight into the world around you (and you can go out and impress your friends with an expanded catalog of obscure anecdotes).

These books are fantastic overall. They are one part almanac, one part encyclopedia and one part a book form of the show Mythbusters. Many of the questions Feldman seeks the answers to are sent to him by his many readers who want to know about these little-known facts (like why there are 18 holes in a golf course and why tennis balls are fuzzy). Okay, these may not be the most important questions in the world, but these are the things we take for granted in everyday life that we normally don't take the time to stop and think (why is that little finger on our hands called the pinky?).

Feldman has been answering these questions since the first Imponderables in 1986. He has a masters degree in popular culture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and taught to first ever college course on Soap Operas. If you enjoy trivia, David Feldman is the man for you. He uncovers the hidden meanings and lost history of sports, food, words, science, politics, and everything in between, often in a humorous and insightful way.

A fascinating read.......2005-03-04

This wonderful book is one of David Feldman's Imponderables Books, in which he raises questions that few have ever asked before, and then goes out and finds the answers. Among the questions asked are "When does a bill become a beak on a bird?" "Why do pianos have 88 keys?" And "Do identical twins have identical fingerprints and DNA?"

Yep, this book has 98 such questions, if I counted correctly. Each one is surprisingly interesting, and makes for quite a fascinating read. I really am glad that this book fell into my hands, and highly recommend it to anyone who dares to ask questions of the world around them.

Bravo to another great book by David Feldman!.......2004-12-03

I have only one complaint about David Feldman, one of
my favorite authors: he doesn't come out with a new book
more often!

His latest--DO ELEPHANTS JUMP?--is just out . . . it is
the tenth in the Imponderable Series, a collection of answers
to questions (raised in other titles) such as: WHY DO CLOCKS
RUN CLOCKWISE? HOW DOES ASPIRIN FIND A HEADACHE?
WHEN DO FISH SLEEP? DO PENGUINS HAVE KNEES?

Feldman has made it his life's work to answer questions that
just pop into his head . . . he also gets suggestions from his many fans, of which I'm proud to admit that I am one.

Many of his answers will make you laugh, such as his response
to this question:

What letters does Campbell's include in alphabet soup in countries that don't use our alphabet (e.g., Greece, Israel, Egypt)?

His response: And what about France? Does Campbell's include
an accent mark over the e?

He then went on to give the following answer:
The media representatives at Campbell's aren't exactly inundated
with his question, but they researched it for us and graciously
responded with the disappointing answer: Campbell's Alphabet
Soup is sold only North America. We urge reconsideration.
Contemplate the potential of Campbell's Cyrillic Soup!

Other questions are ones that I've thought about, often
more than once . . . such as:
Why do we see "stars" when we bump our head?
Why do you sometimes find ice in the urinals in men's bathrooms?
Why are some parts of our bodies more ticklish than others?

To find out the answers, you'll just have to read the book . . . if you do, you'll also enjoy the illustrations of longtime collaborator Kassie Schwan.
