Book Description

Pictures and Tears is a strange and wonderful investigation into paintings and the emotions they evoke.
In past centuries, viewers were often moved by paintings. Fourth-century Greek painting depicted people in states of extreme grief, so that the viewer might respond in kind. Crying in front of paintings was commonplace in the Middle Ages. There were more tears in the eighteenth century, and then again in the age of Romanticism. Why have the last hundred years been so dry by comparison?
James Elkins writes about his encounter with Bellini's Ecstasy of St. Francis in the Frick Collection, the effect of the Rothko Chapel on visitors, our responses to Caravaggio, Greuze, Friedrich, Bouts, David, Ingres, Regnault, a Kamakura period landscape, and Van Gogh. Hundreds of correspondents shared with him their experiences of crying in front of paintings, fleshing out what becomes a history of emotion and vulnerability, and an inquiry into the nature of art.
This is a book for people who have wondered at the power of painting and been moved by it, perhaps even to tears. Also includes an 8-page color insert.

Help! Someone please refund my money on this book! Better yet...the time I wasted reading it.

Elkins is a fine educator and writer, but this book does not fall into either category. This is 250+words of over-intellectualizing on "why" certain paintings move people to tears.

As a professional painter for over two decades, a former Arts Ambassador for the USIA, as well as a world traveler with a love for art, allow me to save potential readers from wasting $19.95, and to give Prof. Elkins' brain a rest.

"I have seen fabulously created art that does not sell or hold its viewers, and poorly created art that does both. Whether a painting brings you to tears or to purchase, it is because the energy the artist held while creating that work stays in that work forever. If the artist was angry at the world, no matter how perfectly that work may be to the trained eye, its energy will be angry and repel its viewers. Joy, loss, and deep spirituality, when held in the heart during creation, is what will bring a viewer to tears." Uriel Dana

5 out of 5 stars AFFECTING AND AFFECTIONATE BOOK.......2004-02-08

This book is beautifully illustrated with paintings by Caravaggio, Greuze, Bellini (Giovanni), Bouts, and Friedrich along with a picture of a chapel designed by Mark Rothko.

As the blurb states, it is a "strange and wonderful investigation into paintings and the emotions they conjure."

The book is eloquently written by the author James Elkins who is a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has also authored "How To Use Your Eyes" and "What Painting Is".

This is a highly affecting book and will give hours of pleasure to those discerning readers who have the privilege to read the author's opus.

5 out of 5 stars A compassionate validation of the individual spirit.......2002-03-09

Jame Elkins has written a book that should be in the librairies of schools, art historians, incipient and experienced art lovers. In a winning conversational style of writing Elkins makes the case for subjective response to paintings, both past and present. And in doing so he gives a brief course in at history (he is an art historian, actively teaching) that is less a chronological evaluation of politics and sociology and techniques of painting than it is a survey of how people have responded to paintings through time. His precis: we are in this century prevented from "experiencing" paintings, so immersed are we in swallowing the opinions of scholars and critics and our own spiritual aridity. He examines why certain people are able to cry in their encounter with paintings, others are moved to physiologic reactions, while others speedily walk past image after image in their need to huury past another obligatory check point in claiming cultural awareness. In many ways this is a sad treatise on the fact that we have arrived at a time when we don't embrace our vulnerability, don't admit that something so apparently inanimate as an old master painting - if given the quantity and quality of time to absorb it - can touch inner secret caves and cause us to light up our souls and our existence by responding with unfettered eyes and heart.

Elkins investigates the various responses (including his own) to the Rothko Chapel, to Giotto, to Renaissance paintings, to the Romantics, to Friedrich, and to Picasso's "Guernica". These are in the form of summation of letters written to him in response to his question "Have you ever cried at paintings?" sent to previous students, art historians, and friends. His findings show that art historians in general have encouraged us to examine paintings as examples of technique, of historical settings, of schools of thought in the past: such academic dissection has replaced the individual response to the visual image. And fortunately for us the author concludes that the visceral response to paintings is more important than the cell of academic cold shelter.

For those of us who have committed our lives to bridging the gap between the painter and the public, encouraging everyone to go to the museums, galleries, schools, and churches to experience the indefinable majesty of emotional response to art, this little book is a godsend. Buy it, read it slowly, break down your own barriers, open your mind, and you will find validation of your inner artist. This is a "beautiful presence" of an artistic expression and we are indebted to Elkins for his courage in writing it.

Book Description

Ready-Made Democracy explores the history of men's dress in America to consider how capitalism and democracy emerged at the center of social life during the century between the Revolution and the Civil War. The story begins with the elevation of homespun clothing to a political ideology on the eve of Independence. Homespun clothing tied the productive efforts of the household to those of the nation, becoming a most tangible expression of the citizen's attachment to the public's happiness.
Coarse dress did not long remain in the wardrobe, particularly not among those political classes who talked most about it. Nevertheless, exhortations of industry and simplicity became a fixture of American discourse over the following century of industrial revolution, as the mass-produced suit emerged as a badge of a uniquely virtuous American polity. It is here, Zakim argues, in the evolution of homespun into its ready-made opposite, that men's dress proves to be both material and metaphor for the rise of democratic capitalism—and a site of the new social arrangements of bourgeois life.

In thus illuminating the critical links among culture, ideology, political economy, and fashion in antebellum America, Ready-Made Democracy will be essential to anyone interested in the history of the United States and the construction of modern life.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting!.......2004-09-22

As I finish this book, my head is fairly spinning. I'm left with the distinct impression that Zakim is a rather brilliant man; if the same can be said of his book, however, I am less certain.

Ready Made Democracy attempts to trace the development of the modern American capitalist society through a close examination of the men's ready-made clothing industry. In this respect, the book's subtitle, "A History of Men's Dress in the American Republic, 1760-1860, is distinctly misleading. More correct, I think, would be "A History of the American Republic in Men's Dress." The book looks at the difficulties American had in coming to terms with their country's rapidly changing identity. As Zakim writes at one point, "Clothing really did constitute a link between self and society." (125) The business suit represented, in its smart ubiquity, capitalism's promise of plenty and profit. At the same time, its sober monochromatic restraint affirmed the old republic morality. In this way, the crowds of identical men swarming Broadway each morning "constituted an industrial spectacle that brought social order to an otherwise disordered situation." (126)

Zakim argues that Americans struggled to come to terms with what their young country represented. Was it the abundance of the thousands of cheap, mass-produced items of clothing that poured out of East Coast cities-an abundance coming at the hands of the country's most exploited and unequally compensated workers? Zakim argues that Americans of the nineteenth century also struggled with this contradiction, wanting to restore the republican values of industry and equality represented by homespun, yet unwilling to give up the wealth and promise of capitalism. The conflict can also be seen in the concern over the plight of the waged seamstress, claimed at once by husbands and bourgeois women. Both were concerned with the breakdown of the gender roles of household industry, yet neither wanted to keep women from working. The contradiction of the early republican values and the crueler excitement of the capitalist system can be seen in the pioneers pouring into the western territories. For the first time, an abundance of cheap land and smaller lot sizes put the American yeoman ideal in the reach of most people. As professor Blackmar pointed out today, American cultural identity was very much still shaped by this agrarian ideal. Yet, as Zakim states, these new pioneers did not practice industry-in fact, the constituted on of the largest markets for ready-made clothing.

From the narrow slice of history that constitutes the nineteenth-century men's ready-made clothing industry, Zakim attempts to integrate economic, social, and cultural currents to present view of the early United States. In a large part, he succeeds. The picture he paints of a society deeply ambivalent about its own success and anxious about its repercussions is a compelling and convincing one. But in some ways, I think that Zakim is hampered by his own intelligence and politics. Looking at the clothing industry, Zakim burrows deeply into his topic, weaving a dense mass of interlinked ideas. He seems unwilling to let go of any one, even if it would make a clearer argument and allow his to pursue another idea more fully. His chapter on the seamstress is at once the books most interesting and its least compelling. The question of why the United States failed to form a real class consciousness is a huge one, and one that is not, in my opinion, satisfactorily resolved by attempting to psychoanalyze the wives of the middle class with little regard to primary sources, calling such charity hypocritical and "hackneyed." In the same way, it is somewhat shocking that an economic history which takes 1860 as its ending point contains little to no mention of the tensions leading to the outbreak of the Civil War, especially when those factors were so closely tied to the textile industry and cotton.

Perhaps I am being too harsh-but maybe that is a good thing. I really enjoyed reading this book. Its ideas were fascinating, provocative and fresh, if the organization was somewhat choppy and introverted.

3 out of 5 stars The material is presented in a language too technical .......2004-10-14

I just took the state exam (and passed!!), I have to say this book is written in too much of a technical manner and too many details for it to be an easy read. I felt I had to constantly translate paragrapgs into "plain english" to keep me going ...the material is presented in too much of a "dry" manner. Lots of times it was confusing to understand what was said, it was very contradictory. If you are taking the state exam, I highly recommend that you form a study group to "disect" what all the languge is...

This is the text book for the class you are required to take AND pass in order to qualify to take the Florida Real Estate Licensing Exam. So don't buy this book if you don't intend to earn your Florida Real Estate License or continue on to broker status. But if you do, you MUST have this book.

The rub with this product is that it contains quizes and a review test BUT THEY DO NOT PROVIDE THE ANSWERS!!!!! I spoke with the publisher and I was told that the book is for classroom use only and the answers will not be provided. If you are studying for the FL RE sales exam, this book is virtually usless without the answer key. SHAME ON AMAZON FOR SELLING THIS PRODUCT WITHOUT DISCLOSURE!!

4 out of 5 stars A good starting point.......2002-10-24

I am currently taking the FREC Salesperson I course and this is the book, as you know, we must use. If you are not taking the State Exam, there is no real reason to buy this book unless you just want to educate yourself. Reason being -- the book's goal, like most of it's kind, is for the student/reader to pass the state exam in the end. Hence, there are probably other books out there that convey similar information that aren't booged down with useless details that only exam takers need to know.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE KEY TO PASSING THE SALESPERSON EXAM.......2001-11-28

I was reading a few reviews about this book. The answer keys to the end of chapter and practice question at the end of the book are available through your instructor. Please note that this book alone will not allow you to take the state exam without a 63 hour Pre-lic. Course. For those who don't understand the material and want the answers to the questions in the book should ask their instructors when they take the required pre-lic. Salesperson FREC I course. As far as the text book, the text book material is excellent!

        Download Description

"Water is vital to social and economic development whilst both arable land and water are scarce. Managing water is highly capital intensive, and capital is also scarce. Simultaneously, there are environmental consequences to any intervention in the water cycle whilst the economy depends on the environment. Therefore, for an integrated catchment, economic analyses must be undertaken on the analysis of the impacts of the proposed scheme upon the catchment as a whole. This book starts with the Dublin declaration for defining sustainable water management and sets out the economic framework needed to support the implementation of its requirements. The book is divided into two parts: the theory and applications. The theory side sets out the nature of choice and decision-making, considering social and policy issues for water and resource management. The applications side provides the tools for the economic evaluation of water needs, the use of economic instruments and cost-benefit analysis. Handbook of Water Economics: principles and practice: Adopts an integrated approach to managing land-water interactions. Includes good practice guidelines for each method along with a comparative summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Illustrates techniques with real applications from projects in Egypt, South Africa, China and the United Kingdom. Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars A textbook that's actually well written.......2006-04-25

If you want to learn pretty much everything you could hope to learn in a basic real estate class, this is a great book to do it with.

My professor basically rambled the whole class, but I read the book and still made an easy A in the class.

All of the details are covered completely, but are easy to read. The beginning of each chapter lists all the definitions for that chapter on one page, which makes for an easy review.

There aren't any color picture, but the black and white diagrams do just fine, and it keeps the cost down, which is fine with me.

This is one textbook I'm actually considering keeping.
