Informative and delightful look at Rockwell's late SEP work........1998-08-24
With large, full page, full color reproductions of all the Saturday Evening Post covers done by Norman Rockwell in his later tears with the Post, this book is a must have for any Rockwell fan. Like the two other books in this set (Early Years and Middle Years) each illustration is accompanied by a page of background on the particular cover. The Stoltz brothers make these essays not only informative, with thorough details about the models, inspirations for the picture and all relevant details regarding the painting, but also quite humorous and entertaining.
This book and the art it displays crosses all generational lines and will satisfy the tastes of art lovers, history buffs and everyone in between.

These paintings show the social stability and the sense of community.......2007-05-15
No one captured the heart of America, both literally and figuratively, than Norman Rockwell. He had a magic way of evoking emotions from his paintings of the simple, yet significant events in the lives of the citizens of the country. So much of that is due to the fine detail of his works.
This book is a collection of some of the most memorable covers he did for "The Saturday Evening Post." That level of detail is no more evident than in the August 22, 1953 cover. It shows a lunch counter with the classic salt and sugar containers and you can see them reflected in the napkin dispenser. The facial expressions of the people are very dramatic, yet realistic, and are completely consistent with the scene being depicted.
To some, these paintings are a naïve recapitulation of what it was really like in the United States in those years. There is very little in the way of the social unrest, racism and paranoia that were so prevalent at the time. Nevertheless, there is something touching about these pictures, they do show the social stability and the sense of community that existed at that time.

When starlets were starlets.......2005-08-18
There's basically three reasons to buy this book:
1) For the clothing styles of (primarily) the 1930s and '40s, as noted in the book's title.
2) For the many movie stills (most featuring actress Marsha Hunt) reproduced therein, a cinemaphile and collector's delight.
3) For the vast array of photographs of the gorgeous Marsha Hunt, certainly an actress who did not (and does not) receive the accolades due her for her natural beauty!
In addition to her beauty being overlooked, Hunt also did not receive the props due her for her superb acting ability -- and Ms. Hunt was also one smart gal. This is a big, thick, well-written book with tons of photos, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it for fans of fashion, movies and female pulchritude (and Marsha Hunt)!
Note, however, the price that dealers are trying to squeeze out of this volume: typically about $100 to almost $200! Don't be ripped-off by dealers trying to bleed you on this book. It was originally published at $49.95, and you can typically find it on eBay for about (or below) that price. In addition, The Drama Book Shop in New York City has copies available for $49.95 (plus shipping), and they have CONTINUED to get a new supply of copies in -- which means there must be a good amount of copies of this book lying in a warehouse somewhere! Buy this book now, but don't overpay!

i actually worked with this lovely film star of the 40's and 50's and helped advise her as to paper, format, type face etc. in getting this book printed. it is one of the pure joys of my life and i felt transported to another era as i was welcomed into her home in Sherman Oaks and was treated to lunch and great stories of her era

Capturing the glamour and style of Hollywood's yesteryears.......2000-11-22
This is a wonderful "cofffee table" book filled with the author's personal collection of black and white photos capturing the fashions of classic times. She was a model and a movie star and her notes and reflections are as interesting as the history captured through the photos. This book is a great reference for costume or clothing designers who want to recreate the style and panache of this period.

What a delight and pleasure it was to read "The Way We Wore." It is truly a one-of-a-kind effort. An extraordinary read and treasure. Ms. Hunt (and her publisher) have given us a jewel of a book. Film buffs and fashion designers will find they MUST have this rare & timely, work in their library.

Book Description
Hiring financial help is a task that many otherwise savvy people approach the wrong way, opting to go on recommendations from family and friends, chance encounters, or advertisements rather than on sound research. In engaging, accessible prose, nationally syndicated columnist Charles A. Jaffe takes the reader through the basics of how to locate appropriate candidates, understand their credentials, check references, conduct initial interviews, maintain control of the relationships and one's finances, and fire an adviser who is not working out.
The book contains guidance on hiring and checking the backgrounds of seven types of advisers--brokers, financial planners, insurance agents, lawyers, tax preparers, bankers, and real estate agents--as well as specific questions to ask to determine whether an adviser is a good, qualified match. In addition the book offers guidance on how to help the advisers function as a team. The author's aim is to help the reader assemble and manage a pool of advisers to serve every major financial need for the rest of his or her lifetime.
This new edition has been updated throughout. It includes hundreds of Web addresses and an online resources directory. Two new chapters discuss online advice services and how to choose an online broker.
Customer Reviews:
Needs better focus.......2003-06-24
A previous reviewer who accused the book of having too much fluff is, unfortunately, only slightly exaggerating. If the author had taken the time to tighten up the book and used only half as many words as he did, the resulting book would have been first rate useful. As it is, the book is a serious test of one's patience and concentration. The ideas are very reasonable, but the reader has to struggle to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Forces you to practice due diligence.......2001-04-27
Some people might think that Jaffe's book is obvious. But what's obvious to some may be revolutionary and important to others.
The book outlines questions that should be asked of any financial proessionals one is considering hiring, and suggests interviewing at least three of each type of adviser to learn differences and to become comfortable.
Jaffe's advice is so good that it is almost impossible not to gain many times the cost of the book in better financial planning and better peace of mind that one has proceeded with due diligence.
From a Jaffe fan: This book is what we have come to expect.......2000-08-27
I read Mr. Jaffe's column every week in the Boston Globe and bought this book after hearing him talk on this subject atthe Globe's personal finance conference (he autographed the book for me).
This book gave me exactly what I have come to expect from Mr. Jaffe: Clear, insightful, unafraid commentary that helped give me the courage to go through with choosing a financial planner. I learned which questions to ask, and I took the book with me and asked those questions. And while it's early to tell (Mr. Jaffe says all the time that anything less than one year is not really long enough to judge), I am happy with my financial planner and expect to stay that way for a long time.
As for the reviewer who thought this book was redundant, he must have skipped the introduction. That's where Mr. Jaffe explains why parts of the book are redundant and advises more knowledgeable investors to skip the parts that they don't need.
If you do that, this book will give you exactly what you need. It certainly did for me.
Lots of fluff.......1999-12-30
As with many books these days, the author seems to have been desparately trying for the maximum number of pages as his primary goal. Large margins, explaining the obvious, repetition, unnecessary quotes, all add up to a book that's only about 25% actual content. If this book was 75% shorter, I'd give it two, maybe three stars. But most of the useful info in this book could be found on the web. A shorter book might have been worthwhile to avoid having to search for it on the web, but having to wade through all the fluff negates this potential benefit.
A lifesaver.......1999-03-03
I had worked with financial planners befor but I was never comfortible. Then I read about this book in the local paper. I bought it. I used it. I just hired a planner, and this time I am comfortible. This book is the reason. I recomend it!

Rich Dad's Teach To Be Rich is about Robert Kiyosaki's decision to give up his manufacturing business and become a teacher...a teacher outside the walls of traditional education. More than a book on teaching, this book is about Robert's quest to find out how we learn and why so many people do not like school, even though they want to learn. Not only is this book a radical departure from traditional thinking on education, it is a radical departure from traditional ideas on money.

Book Description
This convenient reference tool is designed for real estate investors who wish to maximize their tax benefits through a better understanding of real estate law. Ferguson and Spede thoroughly analyze and explain real estate tax laws, as well as the problems and advantages of purchasing, owning, and selling real estate. Specifically explained and illustrated are such issues as calculating excess investment and interest, installment selling, alternative minimum tax, investment credits, recapture of tax credits, trading properties, leases with options to buy, and the establishment of new bases for trade. In addition, the authors emphasize many of the tax traps and pitfalls encountered by investors, including accelerated depreciation, amortization of expenses, and tax write-offs. Also considered are related topics such as personal property taxes, special tax problems, the rehabilitation of historic and older commercial properties, low income housing, rental cooperatives, condominium units, and home ownership taxation. Finally, there is a discussion of tax reform, including the changes brought about by the Deficit Reduction Act of 1984, as well as the possible effects of the flat tax rate proposed by the Treasury Department in January of 1985. The volume is completely cross-referenced, and includes chapter summaries, case histories, and a glossary, as well as numerous tables and illustrations.

From the supplier: Public housing managers should be aware of tax rules which cover low-income housing, particularly the low-income housing tax credit (LIHC). This credit cushions the impact of federal income taxes which owners pay for properties they lease to low-income tenants. LIHC covers acquisition costs, rehabilitation expenses and new construction costs. For the initial lease-up period, the classification of tenants according to annual income must be based on the area's median gross income which the US Department of Housing and Urban Development reports annually. Managers must continually assess tenant and area income to optimize benefits of the LIHC.

From the supplier: A majority of housing developments under the government's low income housing tax credit program (LIHTC) have been able to achieve the set-aside requirements of the program but many others across the nation have been unable to even accomplish minimum program requirements. This means they cannot get qualified residents to lease the necessary number of units to reach the required projections. Tax-credit housing development residents are generally without cash reserves and even a temporary loss of income to these people could be disastrous. LIHTC program property managers must keep in mind that their clients define value and if the latter are not buying, there must be a gap between their perceptions of value and those of property managers. Careful, objective analysis and creativity are required to create the additional value, services or amenities that will satisfy client needs.
