Book Description
Among the many painters of the early American West—of Native Americans, landscape, wildlife—no artist is more admired and renowned than Karl Bodmer. Here, for the first time, carefully prepared and painstakingly reproduced, is the full range of Bodmer's American work, printed in 359 plates, 257 in full color and 102 in black and white. Here, also for the first time, is the background needed to place Bodmer and his work in the history of his time, exploration, and the American frontier: his life, his American journey, and the subjects he painted and their contexts.
Bodmer accompanied his patron, Prince Maximilian of Wied, to the upper Missouri country in 1982-34. For many years, his work was known only through a picture atlas of eighty-one aquatints—largely Native American subjects—published in Europe soon after the party returned home. His original American art dropped out of sight for a hundred years, but was rediscovered at the Wied estate after World War II. The collection is now held by the Inter-North Art Foundation and is on permanent loan to the Joslyn Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. Except for the few selections judged too faint to reproduced, this volume presents that entire collection.
The paintings and sketches constitute a unique visul survey of the American frontier of that day. They follow Maximilian and Bodmer across the United States and some three thousand miles up the Missouri, through the domain of the Sioux, Manans, and Hidatsas, Blackfeet, Assiniboins, and other tribes. They depict landscapes, river views, natural history studies, and views of cities and settlements, as well as Indian portraits and related scenes of aboriginal life.
Karl Bodmer's America is a joint publication of the Joslyn Art Museum and the University of Nebraska Press.

DEPICTS AN ERA LONG GONE.......2005-05-24
I'm fortunate to have a couple volumes on Karl Bodmer's work with this one, in my opinion, being the more complete. The other volume is entitled "People of the First Man" subtitled: Life Among the Plains Indians in Their Final Days of Glory. Bodmer was a Swiss born artist who accompanied the Prince Maximillian of Wied expedition of 1883 as the prince coursed the Missouri River country.
When one opens this book the reader is immediately transported to the Upper Missouri country of 1832-34. With the paintings and sketches taking the reader among the Indian tribes of this area: Lakota (Sioux), Mandans, Hidatsas, Blackfeet, Assiniboins, Kickapoo, Pawnee-Omaha, Cheyenne, Crow, Cree-Gros Ventres, Piegan-Blood, Siksika, Kutenai-Shoshoni, among other tribes. Here for the first time 349 plates with 257 in full color have been given us by the U of Nebraska press. A truly marvelous book.
Soon after Bodmer's passing through this area a smallpox epidemic riddled all these tribes with some such as the Mandans being wiped out of existence. This book not only represents an unusal artifact of the times it illustrates as well people who were very soon to pass out of existence. In all Karl Bodmer had traveled approximately 5,000 miles while executing these priceless works of historical art.
Cannot recommend this volume highly enough!

The definitive guide to Bodmer's beautiful work.......1998-08-25
Browsing through this tome transports one to the expedition Bodmer depicts. Accompanying commentary helps place the works in an historic context. The beauty of the works stand alone, but are made especially poignant with 20th century perspective that many of the Native American subjects will soon be destroyed through disease. A stunning collection.
Breathtaking watercolor artist when America was new.......1997-03-13
Karl's artistic pieces are some of the best I've seen. He shows the life behind the scenes and people he paints. This is an account of his travels through America when it was still young.
If you like watercolor and breathtaking scenery, this book is for you

Book Description
Tribal times Karl Bodmer, American Indian provides a rare and privileged look at Native American life and customs before the invention of photography. Extensive travels, from 1832 to 1834, conducted by Maximilian Prince of Wied and Swiss painter Karl Bodmer through the inner Parts of North America resulted in the publication, in 1839, of the first book to present paintings and descriptions of Native American life in skilled, painstaking detail. The sumptuous pictures reprinted here, depicting battle scenes, landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, are taken from an extremely rare, hand-colored copy of the original publication. Excerpts from Wied's journals serve as keys to the multitude of details contained within each image, giving historical information about the rituals, clothes, and tools of the Native Americans, including well-known figures such as Mató-Tópe. An introduction by anthropologist Sonja Schierle brings the book into a contemporary perspective. Since most of us will never have the opportunity to see Wied and Bodmer's marvelous original publication, TASCHEN brings you the next best thinga reproduction of impeccable quality and consideration, for anyone and everyone to study and enjoy.

Captured the imaginations of the western world then and now.......2003-01-11
Collaboratively written by W. Raymond Wood (Professor of Anthropology, University of Missouri-Columbia), Joseph C. Porter (Chief Curator, North Carolina Museum of History), and David C. Hunt (Director, Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas), and enhanced with numerous black-and-white illustrations and studio art reproductions, Karl Bodmer's Studio Art is a truly captivating collection of images and an informative, scholarly study of the works of Karl Bodmer, a Swiss artist whom Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied selected for an 1833-34 expedition up the Missouri River. Bodmer sketched and painted landscapes and Native American portraits which uniquely captured the imaginations of the western world then and now. Enthusiastically recommended for academic and community library Art History and American History reference collections, Karl Bodmer's Studio Art focuses more on the story of Bodmer's journey than the art itself, yet both the text and the illustrations have a timeless appeal.

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews Principles of Pol. Econ.......1998-01-18
David Ricardo was an English economist who simplified and refined Adam Smith's theory of working capitalism outlined in "Wealth of Nations." The present book, "Principles of Political Economy and Taxation" written in 1817 was Ricardo's most important work.
Ricardo strips away all of Adam Smith's assumptions that the owners of the means of production in society had any inherent right to profit from the labor of the working masses. Indeed, Ricardo laid out the conflict in modern capitalist society as clearly as anyone before or since his time. For Ricardo, the struggle in society was very plain. Capitalists made money off the surplus value created by workers, plain and simple. Therefore, capitalists needed to take as much of the surplus value as they possibly could with out any need for philosophical shilly-shallying. Capitalists need to recognise that their interests conflicted directly with the workers before it was too late. To increase profits capitalists should understand that they needed to reduce wages. Ricardo was elected to the pre-reform Parliament in 1819.
Book Description
The four volumes of the Maximilian, Prince of Wied's Travels in the Interior of America during the years 1832-1834 follow the German explorer and naturalist's travels to the Great Plains region, including his journey up the Missouri River, with Swiss painter Karl Bodmer. While Maximilian's intention had been to describe the flora and fauna of the interior of American, he instead concentrated on describing the culture, language, customs, and appearance of the indigenous people he encountered along the way. Maximilian's work become well known for his thorough study of the Mandans and Hidatsas tribes, as well as for his less complete analysis of the Arikaras tribe. Of particular interest is his description of the one of the most important ceremonies of the Mandans, the O-kee-pa. While his writings helped to reinforce the Romantic ideal of the "noble savage," Wied's Travels also records the impact contact with fur-traders and settlers began have on Native American tribes and the land around them.

Many period advertisements and illustrations from popular magazines depict the styles and moods of the times.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book But Beware of Values .......2005-12-13
This is the most complete book of its kind on modern women's hats. A 256 page, hard cover, 11 ½ in. by 8 ½ in. book, it is full of information and photography. It also makes the bold step of attaching values to vintage hats. I say "bold" because in my experience this is a very immature and capricious market. Beware! Our second museum-style show at our Hillcrest, San Diego location was Women's Hats of the 20th Century where we presented a retrospective of vintage hats. Following the show, we had a silent auction and sale that had bids all over the place as compared to expectations.
Fabulous Book!.......1999-05-08
I have never seen this book in Canada and am delighted to find it at Amazon. Great photos, beautifully presented, interesting reading and very well researched. A must have for anyone with a strong interest in beautiful hats.

PA told me to read it.......2007-08-09
I heard about this comic after reading a blog post on penny-arcade (a famous webcomic on the net), I was surprised and entertained by the pages and pages of unnarrated fresh style. It's a fight comic and you'll find pages and pages of just action from time to time.
I don't read many comics but I would read many comics like this. I'm eagerly awaiting vol 2. Amazon has it listed with a date but no preorder button.
All style, no substance.......2006-11-04
If all you want out of a comic is 200 pages of fight scenes, then by all means pick up this book. The artwork is fantastic, but I also like having a bit of story to back up good artwork.
Good!.......2006-08-09
I really enjoyed reading this because it was fun and fresh. The book is very well drawn and I enjoy the changes of style throughout the story. But sometimes I found myself getting lost in what is actually going on in an image. The one part that seems to fall short is the dialogue. At times it is funny, at other times it seems to be too immature or annoying. But overall, I would buy again!
Crazy Stuff.......2005-10-04
One of the best comics I have read in a while, original, hipp and fresh, even more fun to read when you're wasted.
Funny as Hell. The kinda comic I wanna DO! .......2005-07-19
I picked up Sharknife on a whim unsure of whether I wanted to drop ten bucks for it or not....but I decided to go for it after I read a few pages and laughed outright! Corey's artwork is also very alive and fluid, and it embodies everything I had hoped to achieve with my own style (mixing manga, graf, and action). The characters in shark are hilarious, and one feels as if they're watching an anime while reading the book. It's a short read, but trust me, if it doesn't earn it's $10 price tag with cool points alone, then nothing will. It's the Pulp Fiction of manga esque titles! I'm really glad I picked this one up. If you've ever seen FLCL and like the art of the Gorillaz, give shark knife a try. I cant wait till volume 2 comes out, it's made a fan out of me. Hell, I'm even downloading the songs from Guan Gong's jukebox!. Why September?
Book Description
Peter Hyman wants the model/Fulbright Scholar girlfriend, the job with generous stock options and the well-appointed 2BR w/vu. Instead he routinely finds himself single and underemployed in his closet-free walk-up. The last woman he liked got back together with her lesbian lover; the one before that threw up on the first date.
Welcome to the almost hip life of a reluctant metrosexual–a straight man whose tastes are just gay enough. Equal parts cultural anthropologist, amateur sexologist and witty skeptic, Hyman wryly chronicles the promiscuity and perils of modern manhood, whether he’s undergoing a painful Brazilian bikini wax, lurching through a disastrous threesome, or poignantly reflecting on the Scotch-soaked grief of a difficult breakup.
So sit back in your Eames lounger and revel in the good fortune that The Reluctant Metrosexual is not you, it’s him.
Customer Reviews:
Paean to a pathetic and pointless lifestyle.......2007-05-06
If there is one thing to say about "The Reluctant Metrosexual," it is that I managed to make it to the end. There were numerous times during listening to the audio book that I was tempted to put an end to my involvement, finding the book's pompous and supercilious tone off-putting. The introduction was especially precious and grating, the effect of the author's narcissistic desire to be comedic, shallowly topical and engaging. I nearly did not make it to chapter one. Only the (minimal) investment of having transferred the book to my IPod kept me listening long enough to reach deeper waters.
The book is a series of essays written about the dating and sexual life of a mid-30s New York writer. Peter Hyman is one of the breed of self-conscious, morality-impaired, culture referencing urbanites who populate shows like "Seinfeld." Except with less wit and barely more insight.
Hyman reflects on his Detroit childhood, his stint at law school, hsi first pair of leather pants, his few years as a fact-checker at Vanity Fair, and his many unfulfilled and realized sexual liaisons. The book achieves its maximum depth when Hyman ruminates on the great, lost love of his life -- a woman who seemed devoted to Hyman, but evidently failed to see enough that was worthy of her continued involvement with him. Hyman was unemployed and searching for himself at the time. But at his (and her) age, with dreams of parenthood dancing in their heads, there is no time to wait for someone who is commitment-neutral, or appears so. Hyman's tale of this tragic "amour manqué" is not deep, not especially revelatory, but had enough pathos to keep me listening.
I often found my attention wandering as I listened to this book. There was not enough detail, cultural insight or fascinating self-revelation to keep me riveted. Then too, Hyman's sloppiness and the boring state of his life were enough to make one long to look away. Sloppy? He compared the pain of a male bikini wax (weird enough in itself) to the rigors faced by "the first Apollo astronauts." At first, I thought this was a gruesome reference to the fiery deaths of three astronauts training aboard Apollo 1. But then I realized that Hyman meant to reference the rigors undergone by the "Right Stuff" astronauts of the *Mercury* program in the early 60s. If you're going to make your living making cute cultural references, at least get them right. Boring? Consider that a halfway socially-engaged human being would have no interest in pursuing anonymous 3-way sex just for the ability to write about it later. Nor spend time on internet dating sites. And let's not forget the aforementioned bikini wax.
There is little about supposed metrosexuals in the book. Hyman portrays himself as a hetero aesthete, but there is little in his life (aside from a few snotty opinions about Italian dress shirts, wine preferences and cocktail-party literary references) to justify this self-identification. Hyman's reading style is a distraction as well. He doesn't seem to grasp the complexities of the sentences he has himself written. His voice does not convey his parenthetical asides in a way that the listener can understand.
Yet, I completed the book, which is (perhaps) to damn it with faint praise. Though I would not recommend "The Reluctant Metrosexual" to any of my book-reading friends, neither would I discourage anyone from reading it. There is a certain fascination in encountering the banality of the life Hyman has chosen, or rather (since he seems to live without purpose) found himself living. His unhappy life -- devoutly wishing parenthood while living in perpetual hedonistic adolescence -- is in some ways a warning.
That being said, I wish Hyman the best in moving on to a new level of maturity that seems to have eluded him thus far. It might make his next book (and there will be a next book) more interesting.
get it as book on tape.......2006-07-13
although the material and genre aren't particularly new, this was a nonetheless amusing listen. I would recommend listening to it either on a boring drive or to multitask as it goes pretty quickly and is overall funny.
inspiring, sardonic growing-up essays.......2005-05-15
"The Reluctant Metrosexual" is styled as an exploration of the phenomenon of the stylish, straight man; however, it is much more a story of growing up in an era when the phrase refers not to what one does before one turns eighteen, but what one does afterward. Peter Hyman relates, in a series of essays, his adventures in dating, employment, family life, and travel since leaving law school. His wide variety of experiences yield plentiful fodder; the essays are generally interesting and range from lighthearted anecdotes about dating to more serious explorations of career and family as they affect the young and overprivileged.
Although well-written (excepting a few slow patches), the book occasionally veers into self-indulgence and laziness. Hyman's heartache over his most promising failed relationship haunts the entire book. His metrocentrism - a total focus on the lives of yuppies-in-training, which includes those of all religions and sexual orientation but nobody living outside Manhattan - is equally pervasive and much more irritating. However, the author's animated voice and sardonic humor overcome these failings. "The Reluctant Metrosexual" is an easy but inspiring read.
The boy has skills!!!.......2005-02-04
I picked this book up on a whim thinking it would be an interesting diversion from the novels, biographies, and science books that I normally read and I was pleasantly surprised. This is one of the best pop culture books that I have read in a while. Peter Hyman has a witty dry style that takes time to get used to but after the first two chapters he had me. I purposely slowed the pace of my reading so I could stretch my Peter Hyman fix across as many days possible.
The writing is tight in all its wordiness and veiled references to books I have never read and will probably never read but this is Peter Hyman's style. The chapter on his foray into Mexico where he was promptly shaken down by their goon squad known as the police was particularly funny. I found it hard to discern when he was trying to be funny or thoughtful. This is much easier to pick-up with a writer like Al Frankin who changes his flow and modifies his word choice.
He calls this a collection of essays but it is more like an autobiography of a man who has very little to write about. He graduated from college dropped out of law school and suffered the loss of a few relationships here and there. He strikes me a person who over thinks situations and is susceptible to post-mortem Romanization. This is not an incitement of the man, it's a simple observation. When he talks about the wife and white picket fence and 2 ½ children he yearns for he sounds like child away from summer camp who wants to go home.
This book may be nothing more than an exercise in self-indulgence but I am glad I had an opportunity to read it. Peter Hyman's niche may lie in his ability to write about nothing and turn it into something that sounds semi-profound. I don't know what he is going to write about next but I would buy anything that Peter Hyman published so long as he doesn't talk about Italian shirts again.
Bk. travels well, as any (reluctant) metrosexual might.......2005-01-28
I just returned from a trip to Cancun, and the experience was definitely enhanced by taking The Reluctant Metrosexual along with me. I (a Jearthy girl, Peter's term for those of us who are Jewish and outgoing) had the book in my clutches on the flight, and Peter's wit and transporting stories made the time pass at warp speed. I also read on the hotel balcony, and his tales of love's promise, love's loss and life's trials and tortures -- the kind specific to big city life -- washed satisfyingly over me. Having completed the book, I took Dave Eggers with me to the beach, but he wasn't nearly as entertaining or insightful. I recommend The Reluctant Metrosexual to those who want to bring, in a highly literate way, a little voyeurism and vicarious living into their day.
