Book Description

This witty and fascinating study reminds us that there was animation before Disney: about thirty years of creativity and experimentation flourishing in such extraordinary work as Girdie the Dinosaur and Felix the Cat. Before Mickey, the first and only in-depth history of animation from 1898-1928, includes accounts of mechanical ingenuity, marketing and art. Crafton is equally adept at explaining techniques of sketching and camera work, evoking characteristic styles of such pioneering animators as Winsor McCay and Ladislas Starevitch, placing work in its social and economic context, and unraveling the aesthetic impact of specific cartoons.

"Before Mickey's scholarship is quite lively and its descriptions are evocative and often funny. The history of animation coexisted with that of live-action film but has never been given as much attention."—Tim Hunter, New York Times

5 out of 5 stars Chronicle of a much forgotten time........2002-11-19

There was once a time when the utterance "Mickey Mouse" had no meaning and conjured up no images of vast tracts of decadent land saturated with sugary amusement. The word "Felix", however, would probably send a jolt through most living in this lost time. Just how popular Felix was is evident in a 1926 photograph of Ligget's Drug Store in Grand Central Station that Crafton included in "Before Mickey." The window is nearly filled to the brim with Felix paraphenalia, much like we've seen recently with the Powerpuff Girls, Spongebob Squarepants and Harry Potter. Felix was once just as ubiquitous and just as unavoidable.

The events that led up to this incredible success are laid out in "Before Mickey." The saga of animation is an interesting and much neglected part of cinema history. The book covers something that is almost never discussed: animation's origins in stop-motion. Everyone should read Crafton's account of "The Haunted Hotel" - a stop-motion film where objects "float" through the air and objects move on their own. It terrified audiences and gave impendance to animation with its success. From this it was almost a natural progression to drawings that moved and funny characters in funny situations.

Silent animation had its own life and own method of communicating. Everything was in the pictures, and early animation artists made the most of this. It remains, and will probably sadly remain, a very underappreciated art form. We're just too drunk with sound these days.

Luckily, you can read this book and get a taste of what those days must have been like, the stories of the pioneers that made it all possible (those in America, at least) and how far we've come in some respects and what we've lost in others.

Anyone interested in the early history of animation should read this(after all, there isn't much else out there right now). Also, if you can, buy the tape (is it available on DVD now?) that accompanies the book. It's filled with great animation but sadly missing "The Haunted Hotel." It does, however, include a GREAT Felix the Cat cartoon.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on the First 30 Years of Animation.......2001-01-14

In histories of animation there is usually a very small amount of time devoted to animation that was released before "Steamboat Willie". This book fills this hole quite nicely. The book goes into exhaustive detail on James Stuart Blackton, Winsor McCay, Emile Cohl, Otto Messmer, the Bray Studio, and animation shops that emerged from the Bray Studio. There is one chapter devoted to commercial animation in Europe from this time period. But if you're looking for a more in depth study of early European animators like Ladislas Starewicz and Lotte Reiniger, you might want to check some place else (I'm not sure where). Though one entire chapter IS devoted to Emile Cohl, this mostly deals with American animation. Those looking for information about animation outside of Western society are looking in the wrong place. As its title suggests, this book is basically a history of events leading up to Mickey Mouse.

4 out of 5 stars My 4 year old loves it........2007-09-17

Like the other Disney products, this one has layers of educational elements--visual, verbal, situational--that repeat and build. I think it's a little wordy for the 2 to 4 year old crowd, but my newly 4 year old son loves it, and I'm sure in a couple of years he'll be reading it (if he's not tired of it by then). It's a very thin book, but colorful and easy for little hands.

4 out of 5 stars A fun little book.......2007-08-25

This book teaches kids the value of making logical choices while it entertains them with a chaotic story. When a frog leaps through Mickey's Clubhouse, it splashes through a sink, destroys Daisy's painting, ruins a pizza, knocks the goldfish out of their bowl and nearly gets eaten by Goofy. The lesson is subtle, but it's nice to have in there.

3 out of 5 stars Before the Dawn.......2000-10-27

Micky was a highly decorated combat disabled veteran who served in the Riverine. Some of the training was at Coronado Island and that is where the SEAL team does a portion of their training. It is too bad that so many that went through Coronado like to consider themselves as SEAL team members. That is the main flaw in the book. Bill Kimball has helped several veterans write their story and has done a very fine job. Micky is a personal friend and I feel bad about this, as he served his country above and beyond his call.

4 out of 5 stars Before the Dawn.......2000-01-19

While it is probably true that the author is not an offical Navy Seal I found the book to be an excellent look into the life of Vietnam veterans. I have met one of the people mentioned in the book; Dave Roever. He was definetly injured as listed in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the war and particularly the effects of war.

Bringing an entirely new slant to the concept of the coffee-table book, SUMO is a suitably enormous homage to 79-year-old Helmut Newton, the master of subversive and erotic photography. "I wanted to build a monument to the most important photographer of the 20th century," comments Benedikt Taschen, the publisher behind SUMO. He delivers. Weighing over 65 pounds, measuring more than two feet long, and breaking any previous size record in book publishing, SUMO contains 480 pages of every aspect of Newton's outstanding career in photography. Each copy of the book is bound by hand and numbered and signed by the artist. In order to showcase this colossus, the book is packaged with its own stand designed by Philippe Starck.

This outsized volume contains the body of Newton's controversial yet iconographic work, documenting fashion, fetishism, and above all an overriding obsession with voyeurism that can make the viewer feel complicit or uneasy by turns. Newton himself describes SUMO as "terrifying and outrageous. I don't even look at it as a book.... I look at it as an object." --Catherine Taylor, Amazon.co.uk

This is a big book but you cannot buy it anymore as the booksellers have gobbled them up so no one can get a copy unless the spend 20grand.

              3 out of 5 stars $$ Books $$.......2006-03-23

The book is wonderful when you first open the box, take the stand out first and be carful opening it (watch your fingers) You need 2 people to get the book on the stand. Once it is on the stand it is best not to leave it closed because it is so heavy that the books binding will sag. DO NOT let friends handle the book, or if they do watch over them. If the cover is dropped closed, pages will crease and bend. My Friends love the book more then I do now. Is it worth the thousands I paid for it? Not really. Oh and keep the box it comes with so you are able to sell it easier once you are over it. To keep it real, the only "cool" part of owning the book is that you are known for owning it!

              5 out of 5 stars A work of art............2003-12-17

This book is by far a conversation piece....I have had company that spends hours turning the pages. Even after having the book for several months, I flip through it and see photos I don't recall seeing the first time. I absolutely love this book and would highly recommend it to everyone. According to the folks at the Taschen bookstore in Beverly Hills, CA, there are fewer than 100 books left out of the 10,000 printed.

              5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!.......2003-06-01

ANY Helmut or June fan must have this anthology!!

              3 out of 5 stars a Monolith.......2003-04-22

Well, as everyone else says, there's no other book like it. I had a look at a copy in an art photography store and thought it was ok, but would I pay two grand for it? Nah, I don't think so. Admittedly, the cover shot from the series 'Big Nudes' is impressive when you first see it, but these pictures were never meant to be printed at this size. Newton shoots fast and produces grainy photographs; at this size the pictures start losing clarity because of the extreme grainyness. There are also slight scratches and imperfections on some of the negatives, which at a normal size are miniscule, but here the tiniest scratch is blown up into a great white worm crawling over the page.

Don't get me wrong, Newton is one of the great lensmen of recent decades. The work displayed here is of itself, brilliant. Even so, you could save yourself a packet and buy a quality 'normal' book of his work, where the pictures can be appreciated more easily. This book's merit lies in it being an art object in it's own right. If you actually want to savour and enjoy Newton's work, give it a miss.

Everyone is a traitor! So goes the ethos of Paranoia, the surreal, twisted vision of an Orwellian future where players are positively encouraged to betray each other merely to survive, and the most unique roleplaying game on the market today. Get them before they get you – and here’s the stuff to do it with! Paranoia STUFF provides 128 pages of bleeding-edge (?) equipment necessary to ensure that the citizen is last clone standing in Alpha Complex, all catalogued in the same black and ironic humour so iconic to the game. Weapons, equipment, cybernetic enhancements, foodstuffs and assorted doodads in many categories -- over 150 items in all. The Computer Phreaks secret society has kindly hacked the listing for C-Bay, the leading Alpha Complex auction site, so for once you can read customer comments that explain how these items may backfire. If you think that will help your Troubleshooter survive better when you get issued this equipment -- well, maybe you're right, but we'll try to prevent that. Written by chief Paranoia writer Allen Varney, Paranoia STUFF is a passionately produced book, the next instalment of an extensively supported development programme. Paranoia is destined to once more provide roleplayers with the sort of frantic gaming experience that proved so popular at the game’s inception - there has never been a roleplaying game like it!

                        Book Description

Scandinavian Humor & Other Myths is America's best-selling book of Scandinavian Humor. A sophisticated, loving look at a stoic crowd that actually prefers cold weather, almost always wears suits (Pants, Leisure, or Snowmobile), and doesn't like Food that Hurts.

"So Funny that you almost laugh out loud."
                        - An Old Swede

                        5 out of 5 stars If you're been up North, you'll have a laugh...then despair.......2001-06-03

I lived in Finland for six months and Sweden for two months, and most of them were in Lapland - Swedish or Finnish, what's the difference? Then I hitched down the entire coast of Norway (four days minimum since drivers, rare anyway, won't pick you up)to Oslo, back to Sweden, back through Denmark and into Germany. The temperature dropped to 32F, and I felt very warm indeed.

I loved Scandanavia and I fit right in, with my droll and melancholy Irish background. But there's no denying that the people there tend to excessive brooding, stoicism, analysis, jealousy, drinking and inferiority complexes. Their food is not so all bland-white as the book implies, but it hits it pretty well on the button, that they are very suspicious of spices, and "food that hurts" (all these darn trendy ethnic restaurants).

Their clothes fit the weather - if it's not freezing and snowing, then it's raining, windy, foggy, or at least overcast. Forget your happy California fantasies or take them elsewhere. So they all look plain, uniform and functional, well, it's cold! Have you been to Alaska? That lumberjack look ain't too pretty but it will do when there's icicles on your moustache.

The funniest part for me was the illustrations of the various types of Scandanavians and how to distinguish the nationalities. Naturally, the model is always the same whether it's Erik Erikson, Lars Larson, or Jukka Suomilainen.

Of course this book is aimed more at Scandanavians living in USA, especially in the Minnesota area. I haven't been there, but I surely will go and see how the polyester pants are doing. In fact, they remind me a lot of my parents' Irishness except that we make noise, have great wit and humor and drink less.

Read this book and then drown your sorrows if you are a Swede!

5 out of 5 stars This tells it like it is!.......2000-12-26

My sister and I were talking about this book yesterday and I checked to see if it was still available. Thank goodness it is!

I first read it in 1987 and laughed out loud at parts. It is all so true. If you grew up in the Midwest with Swedish-American parents like we did, it is all familiar. Particularly funny are the photographs and captions.

Sections on the Lutheran Church are just the way it was for us. Jello was the food of choice at every church occasion that required food and from what I've heard still is.

I think it helps if you have a Scandinavian background so you can understand the jokes which are so funny to us, but may not be to outsiders.

I still get a laugh each time I look at it.
