overview.......2002-06-29
Very enjoyable overview of archaeo-astronomy. Brown neatly debunks the lunatic fringe, reveals some of the unsung heroes of the field, and provides a clear summary of current ideas for the lay person.
Megaliths,Myths and Men.......2001-01-16
Author presents the astronomy side of astro-archaelogy very well. Reader is advised to have firm understanding of solar and moon mechanics. The author gives considerable details regarding origin and cultural history of Stonehenge and other sarcens. Different historians are quoted throughout book and examined in context of present archaelogy. Debate still exists over ceremonial/religious usage of Stonehenge. Author presents past ideas of a Mycenaean influence, pre-Roman conquest, and Egyptian influence.

Book Description
Women are murdered by men every day, yet these acts of femicide barely make the news. Across Canada, there are over fifty memorials to women who have been murdered. Each one tells at least two stories: the terrible one of unremitting violence against women and the triumphant one of women claiming public space, naming the violence and insisting that society remember. This book is the first to record thirty of these, and in so doing names the women remembered and the circumstances of their deaths. The authors document the feminist community's response and the initiative taken to build memorials along with the official attempts to keep them out of public view. The memorials documented include those in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, The Pas, Toronto, Montreal, London, Ottawa and Moncton.
Remembering Women Murdered by Men features the voices of memorial makers and the struggle of bringing public attention to the issue of femicide. It inspires all of us to speak out. Visit the companion website, The Global Women's Memorial, a dynamic and interative forum dedicated to ending violence against women, www.globalwomensmemorial.org.

Especially recommended for feminist studies shelves........2007-06-10
Written by The Cultural Memory Group, Remembering Women Murdered By Men: Memorials Across Canada is a thoughtful and troubling public record of feminist efforts throughout Canada to memorialize female victims murdered by men, in an ongoing effort to protest violence against women through active remembrance. From Vancouver to Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and more, Remembering Women Murdered By Men recounts social and cultural struggles in an ongoing battle against femicide, including community efforts to shy away from or hide the fact that femicide is taking place. Especially recommended for feminist studies shelves.

Men and Monuments by Janet Flanner!.......2006-09-25
The incomparable Janet Flanner writes this book with such wit and astute observation of men and their creations. Janet Flanner was also known as Genet. She was a journalist, author, and even novelist whose personal life was far more fascinating than any of her books. She brings the same determination to explaining men and their monuments whether they are statues or buildings or whatever creation.

meticulous and fascinating.......2006-10-15
Though gravestone studies is not a wildly popular topic, if you have any interest at all in those eerie, evocative 17th and 18th century markers, this book is a must-have. The author, James Slater, is a retired University of Connecticut professor who is thoroughly versed in research techniques and standards. This study, compiling the results of years of extensive, painstaking research into local ancient burying grounds and vital records, is priceless for the wealth of information it contains. In addition to describing and illustrating the artistic styles and components habitually used by the creators of these works of art and iconography, Dr. Slater also discusses what little is known about their carvers, much of this biographical info having been unearthed by him in the course of his studies. Beautifully written and photographed, and highly recommended to any student of this slice of our history.

Wallis Simpson, the famously well dressed Duchess of Windsor, once remarked that "when the little black dress is right, there is nothing else to wear in its place." And designer Christian Dior was so passionate about the "little black frock" that he once said he "could write a book about black." Dior did not write Dressed in Black--Valerie Mendes did--but the photos and anecdotes in the book affirm that the two renowned trendsetters were not alone in their affinity for the non-color. The core of the book comprises images and histories of 59 black dresses by various designers and one black pantsuit--designed by Vivienne Westwood--all culled from the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Arranged chronologically, the outfits illustrate the evolution of women's fashion over the last century, from early-20th-century half-mourning dresses--black gowns with small touches of color to signify the end of a long mourning period--to mid-'90s evening gowns. Highlights include an embroidered, drop-waisted Chanel evening dress from 1922; a quilted, full-length evening gown designed by Matilda Etches in 1947 to wear to sparely heated public spaces in postwar London; and a casual cotton summer dress accented by a bright orange asymmetrical hem, created by Yohji Yamamoto in the late 1980s. Calvin Klein, Mariano Fortuny, Balenciaga, and Azzedine Alaia are among the famous and lesser-known designers whose sartorial creations are explored here. Mendes's detailed introductory essay traces the rise of black as a dominant feature in fashion, from its selection as the 15th-century duke of Burgundy's favorite clothing color to Chanel's decision to omit black entirely from its 1999 collection. Dressed in Black is a visual and factual treat for anyone interested in the history of fashion, or the simple pleasure of wearing black. --Jordana Moskowitz
Book Description
As glamorous and alluring as its subject, this stylish book celebrates that enduring fashion essential: the little black dress. From Fortuny, Schiaparelli, Dior, and Balenciaga to Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Giorgio Armani, black has inspired designers the world over to produce some of their most enduring and stunning creations.
A fashion show between two covers, Dressed in Black presents a retrospective of the last 100 years of the black dress in its many guises: smart day wear, chic and understated; flamboyant evening confections of lace, feathers, tulle, velvet, and satin; funky "street-style" outfits that signify rebellion and youth. Dramatic, specially commissioned photographs reveal the dresses' exquisite details and craftsmanship, while the text tells the story behind each piece and its designer, providing a chronicle of 20th-century fashion from a single and compelling perspective.
26- illustrations, 80 in full color, 7- line drawings, 9 3/4" x 13 3/8"
VALERIE MENDES is chief curator of the Department of Textiles and Dress at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She has been documenting and lecturing on women's fashion for many years, and in 1983 curated the first exhibition on the black dress.

History in Black.......2004-06-18
Nice and informative book goes into the depths of black fashion. This book is full of stories and nice photos. After reading this book I have questioned myself - is black a history? This book doesn't give you the answer, but we all know, that red is modern black and that's why PPUPPY couture is red.
A SPECTACULAR SPECTACLE!!.......2000-08-10
On my first visit to London, I happened into the Victoria and Albert Museum and saw my first costume exhibition: CECIL BEATON'S ANTHOLOGY OF FASHION. It changed my life. This book will change yours. The photography is fantastic and the text is informative as well as entertaining. This book is almost as wonderful as seeing these dresses in person. . .almost!
A chic addition, a chic edition.......2000-03-28
No "well heeled" coffee table should be without this little number...also makes an elegant gift. Gorgeoous photos of the black dress spanning the 1900's, lovingly compiled.. Anyone who loves fashion will appreciate this book. A "MUST HAVE" for STYLE BUFFS!

Book Description
Wouldn't it be fun to trade places with your pet? A little boy tries the idea on for size with the help of a multilayered outfit and an obliging black dog.
It’s time to get dressed! First the underpants - one paw, then two. It’s a challenge to put on a shirt lying down! A sweater is perfect for peekaboo, then there’s the pants and four socks, and - hold the kisses - the job’s almost done. With fresh, clear colors and flat, simple shapes, Lizi Boyd takes classic child’s play and gives it a funny, tail-wagging twist.

Missing Lines.......2007-02-02
Unfortunately misses some great opportunities.
My favourite of all time (not included) - from The Matrix as Neo is about to be ejected into reality"
"Buckle your seat belt, Dorothy - because Kansas is going 'bye-bye'"
So bad ... so clumsy ... it made the movie for me!
what's a bad movie line for JEALOUS.......2005-10-21
the only people who write these terrible books are those who are jealous they could not write at even the low level of the films they make fun of, I'm sure the writer was so sick of having all her scripts deemed as skid marks on the underwear of writing that she did not even write a book but got a group of quotes and stuck her name on it. Sure I laughed when I read this, I laughed at the author, and I laughed when I gave to my annoying next door neighbour. I beg you, please, do NOT read this crap.
Loads of great bad movie lines. Yum!.......2002-06-08
I bought this book through a link on the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards website. It has a lot of hilarious, awkward, or just plain ridiculous movie lines, soliloquies, trailer teasers, and more. Although the lines probably sounded goofier on movie soundtracks than they read on the printed page, they're still a ball! They hark back to the times when bad movies were amusingly cheesy grade-Z cinema during the heyday of the Cold War, and were hilarious enough to rate an entry on Mystery Science Theater 3000 - unlike today's giant, bloated multi-million-dollar megaton cheesebombs, which aren't entertaining (or any fun) at all. The book proves that Joe Esterhazs (whose
is quoted here) gets paid $3 million a script to achieve the same low quality that the cheesemasters of yore did, for way less. Buy this book, get a can of Pringles and a cheap soda, and enjoy. By the way, if you like this book, the authors say in the intro that they are putting together a sequel! Yum!
I got quoted!!!.......2002-02-27
Okay, maybe everyone was NOT as excited to be quoted in this book as I was, but I was VERY enthusiastic! There's a passage quoted from the Japanese monster movie, "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe" where it lists the people as "Man" and "Woman". Well, the woman is ME!
I did the English voice for the character of Dr. Nagamine in the American dub of this film (portrayed by Shinobu Nakayama), and it doesn't give a credit for the actors (Japanese or American).
What are the lines, you ask?
Man (voiced by Aaron Krohn): I'd like to take you out in a monster free city.
Woman (ME!): I'd like that.
Well, I'd probably like the book even if I weren't in it. But I'd give it four and a half stars.
Regards,
Tiffany Grant
Laugh-o-rama!.......2001-07-27
Campy and ridiculous and very funny! This collection of really godawful movie lines is definitely stupid, but a lot of laughs. There are special sections in here that are really a hoot (there's one about bad romantic lines that killed me). Loved it -- but I wish there had been more special sections, personally.
