1 out of 5 stars The conservative agenda gets in the way!.......2001-06-04

I purchased this book after enjoying an exhibit of Hudson River School paintings. While the premise of the book is an interesting one, I couldn't get past the conservative politics! It was Newt Gingrich's quote & the mention of Lynne Cheney as a harbinger of moral change that pushed me over the edge. I was hoping to gain a further appreciation of the genre, but found myself too iritated by the modern day political commentary to keep reading. If you have BOTH an appreciation of the school & a conservative political outlook--this is probably the book for you. However, if you find conservative definitions of morality and cultural standards off-putting, don't bother with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2001-05-25

Anyone alarmed by the loss of cultural standards in America today will find this book fascinating. Mr. Cooper clearly demonstrates the relationship between culture and art. We are reminded of a time in our nations youth when the arts served to lift up and inspire, when truth, virtue and beauty were not doubted but sought after because they represented the very best of what we could be. Today much of our art points in the opposite direction, not celebrating what we aspire to be but pointing out the worst of what we are. As an artist in todays culture I can attest to the accuracy of Mr.Coopers observations concerning the role modern art has played in our cultural decline.I can also confirm the great hunger for art that lifts the spirit and inspires our hopes and dreams. I highly recommend this book for its insight into the importance of our creative endeavors and how we direct them. I hope it serves as an inspiration to all artists seeking to better the world through their gifts.

3 out of 5 stars It's a different Cooper!.......2001-03-31

"Knights of the Brush" is a fascinating book on the Hudson River School landscape painters, but it is not (repeat not) by the novelist James Fenimore Cooper! The author, a distinguished art historian, is James F. Cooper and unlike the novelist is very much alive! That said, I find the book a little strange. Mr. Cooper analyses and discusses a wide range of Hudson River landscape paintings by painters such as Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, and Jasper Cropsey -- stressing their moral and religious intent and content in a way that should increase appreciation of their merit. The book is filled with attractive color reproductions of their works. But this is coupled with a sometimes repetitious jeremiad against current "post-modern" culture and ethics and apparently everything else to do with contemporary American culture. Somehow the art history and appreciation and the political pamphlet do not live happily with each other. Readers and art lovers can enjoy and appreciate "Knights of the Brush," and the author's passion for art, without necessarily accepting all his passion for turning back the cultural clock.

4 out of 5 stars Beauty is truth, truth beauty........2000-12-22

This is a book that post-modernists and deconstructionists can easily pass over. However, if you accept even a glimmer of Keats' insight:

Beauty is truth, truth beauty - that is all

Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

Ode on a Grecian Urn

Then you will find this a worthwhile book. Cooper begins with the argument that the aesthetic is the most highly developed aspect of a society. Once the aesthetic sense begins to fray, then society is on a slippery slope where the moral vision begins to lose focus and eventually, may collapse.

This is a classic story of decline and fall, and Cooper puts the Golden Age with the Hudson River School of American art. The book takes the moral values of the early 19th Century Americans, natives like Cropsey as well as immigrants like Thomas Cole, and illustrates their beliefs with representative, breathtaking paintings. Some of the strongest points are made in contrasting the moral vision which informs the Hudson River School with the altogether bleak view of the human condition which is seen in representative works from 20th century painters like Hopper and Andrew Wyeth.

Cooper does effectively demolish the canard that these artists were little more than shills for the new capitalist order. Given the view which these men held, that to truely view nature is the glimpse the hand of God on earth, if they had painted mills and factories, they would have clearly been less than worshipful of their subject.

However, Cooper's thesis becomes a little repetitive as each chapter keeps coming back to the same theme with slightly different wording.

In the end, the art is stunning, the commentary is thoughtful, but slightly tighter writing style would have won a fifth star.

2 out of 5 stars Not that special..........2005-11-18

i wasn't very impressed. i bought the book for an airplane ride and was very disappointed to find how often the author wrote (these are examples) "you can find great ones online" or "skin care tips online" or "list of top best photogs worldwide online." i didn't have a computer and i wanted to know what they were talking about. if you don't have access to a computer 24/7 this book is not for you. EVEN if you have access to a computer 24/7 this book is not for you cause than you CAN look it all up.

5 out of 5 stars Model & Talent 2001.......2002-06-18

I think this book can help me a lot for what i want to do in my career because i had always wanted to be a model. People always say that i should be a model because of my body and beauty i really want to get into a school of modeling but i dont know which one i cant find one right now i'm 16 yrs old and i want to start now. 1 out of 5 stars Runway, Runway, Runway.......2001-08-28

This book concentrates both in text and photographs, on runway modeling. Generally, runway models (outside small towns) are models who have already 'made it' in print modeling (editorial and advertising). This book is sorely lacking in the fundamentals of modeling -- like finding out where you fit and where your potential lies.

5 out of 5 stars Your Modeling Career.......2000-05-15

Because I am in New york I have a lot of chances to get into the modeling world. Finally I have a good guide to help me get started. I especially love the runway photos which are exciting and very well done. This is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars I Really Recommend this book. Excellent!.......2000-04-11

For someone who lives in a country outside the United States,it is a good thing to find a book like this one which emphasizes theuse of the Internet to find out about the modeling business. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about becoming a model but does not know where to start. There is so much info in it, that having used only a tenth of it, and I'm already happy with my investment.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful!.......2000-01-12

I am just starting out as a model and I had so many questions. Is modeling for you? was the perfect find. It gave me insight into the modeling business and helped me to understand the steps that are necessary to succeed. I feel much more conffident now that I have read this book. Every aspiring model should read it.

5 out of 5 stars Tells you things other modeling guides don't, like..........1999-10-13

The fact that the majority of today's sucessful black models started at black agencies, and there's a listing of them in this book. It was helpful, but if you're already established as a model, it may seem redundant.

5 out of 5 stars a great book for all models.......1998-02-18

i recommend this book, because it gave me all the information i needed to get started in a modeling career.

      2 out of 5 stars this book.......1999-05-02

this book is alright but the thing that i hated was that it says "go to snap settings" and it took me over 20 minutes to find it. It doesn't tell you where to find stuff. It took me over 2 hours to do some projects because i was exploring to find settings and boxes i had to check. dont buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Not very user friendly.......1997-12-08

Being a new Max user, I found that this book confused me...the instructions it gave were quite vague and sometimes did not work. It leaves out areas of importance which you should know when you create the scenes in the book.

      4 out of 5 stars Doesn't Fullfill Expectations.......1997-11-20

I was kinda disappointed with the book. First of all, it's labelled "design guide", but is really just a bunch of tutorials. The introduction says "this book is not a tutorial on learning every button and menu of Max....its a fast-paced, project oriented guide on doing cool stuff with an awesome package". First off, project oriented = tutorials, so you would assume cool stuff making the tutorials-- but some of them don't work! The beginning of each chapter shows you a nice picture of the "completed project", only they show you how to get there 1/2 way! Its like 'here's a picture, do it yourself'. The tutorials also fail to tell you why things happen. They give you steps, like a recipe. Clik that button, set this value, press enter, click here, type 2.1, draw this, click Enter, done, thank you, have a nice day. That's the quality of the tutorials. But then again, its "fast-paced" book, so its assumed you spend time to do whatever steps are missing and fool around with the numbers to understand what they do.

5 out of 5 stars SI 3D Design Guide isgreat.......2000-05-27

I rated this what I did because it IS exactly what it says it is- a design guide. If you are a rank amateur, you will get a lot out of this book that you would scratching your head for hours or days trying to figure out using the manuals alone. If you are artistically inclined, you will like the included artwork which will give you an idea of what is possible with the program.

The exercises definitely give you a familiarity with the software which is important if you ever want to be productive. If this was a book full of tutorials, you may very well become an expert on creating a few specific types of things, but what they did here is give you a straightforward explanation of the various functions of the menu items and such, which goes a longer way in making you proficient in the entire package instead of a few select areas. It's like the old saying, "give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day...teach a man how to fish, and he'll eat for a lifetime".

They inspire you to create your own work instead of reproducing someone else's and gaining nothing in the process.

        1 out of 5 stars book for 3d newbies.......2000-02-21

I couldnt find anything helpful in this book. I really dont know why its rated that good. The Inside Softimage book is so much better.

4 out of 5 stars Money well spent. The projects rock........1999-06-12

I just wrapped up going through some of the chapters, and this is a very nice resource. The sample databases have some cool Viewpoint models, fully boned and textured, that alone is worth the cost of the book. Some of the basics stuff is fluffy, but the real projects are very cool. Theres alot of hard won workflow info presented that if you're new to Soft you'll greatly appreciate. This isn't ugly ducklings and fake exercises. Each project results in a useful model or animation. The dolphin is great! I would have liked to see more detailed imagery and the CD has some naming inconsistencies, but overall you can't go wrong with this book.

1 out of 5 stars A basic intro to Softimage, better read the manuals........1999-01-19

I found the book really basic, with some interesting points and some useful tricks, but the original manuals are really better. The exercices presented are too basic, almost a joke.

4 out of 5 stars A book for intermediates to pros looking for new direction.......1998-09-14

This is a good book if you are after a few new FX to include in you work. There are some simple things in there, such as basic NURBS modelling, but over all this book assumes you know what you are doing and teaches you some new tricks. Once learnt these become very useful in general and can be put to good use in bigger and better projects.

                Book Description

Although Japanese real estate is an important and growing segment of the international investment market, the lack of solid information on the subject has made it difficult for foreign investors to take advantage of investment opportunities in that country. M. A. Hines, the noted authority and writer on domestic and international real estate, has conducted the first systematic research on this market and distilled her findings in one information-packed volume. A comprehensive guide for the real estate professional, it opens the door to what Professor Hines considers to be the most promising new frontier in this type of overseas investment. Hines is convinced that to invest profitably in Japanese properties, the investor needs to develop an understanding not only of the investment market but of Japanese society, culture, and economics, as well as of how these influence the way the Japanese do business. The only work of its kind in English, this authoritative new book will be essential reading for the real estate investor with an ambition to explore fresh opportunities in the international market.
