Better pictures on Ebay.......2006-12-03
I bought this book based on the one review, and I have to completely disagree. The pictures in this one are dark and muddy, it's very hard to see details. And that's the point, isn't it? The cleaning and repairing chapter is moderately helpful if you have no clue. The chapters are arranged by COLORS. Not by designers, or eras, or anything else that might make sense. The author will mention that something is in the style of Schreiner, but never go into any detail about what that style might entail. A waste of money.
Probably the best beginners book about Rhinestones........2000-06-19
This is a beautiful book with fabulous pictures. It has a wealth of good jewelry items illustrated that actually apply to things a person who is not wealthy might have. They have a very interesting and easy to understand section on how to clean Rhinestone jewelry, how to make some repairs, and how to store and display it. All in all this is a very complete, useful, interesting and beautiful book about Rhinestone jewelry.

Book Description
The quest for diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and all beautiful stones dates back to the beginning of time. Nothing is more glamorous, elegant, or sensual than the look and feel of precious metals - gold and platinum - accented with stunning stones. These pages introduce some of great jewelry's most passionate admirers - Princess Grace, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Princess Diana - fairy tale lives that were punctuated with historical and unforgettable jewels. This book explains why jewelry is the universal language of art, love and memories.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photos........2001-06-04
The photos are stunning but the chapters are predictable, like in Mrs. Childers' 3 previous books. Why not explain a bit more about the other Haute Joaillerie Houses like, Mellerio dits Meller, Buccellati, JAR and their distinctive and highly original styles. Maybe an idea for the next edition? The photos of European royalty and their US "counterparts" are very nice and one recognises certain highly publicised items like, for instance Jackie O's famous "moon"-earrings and Princess Diana's tiara. All in all, a nice book for a nice price if it's merely (very) easy reading you want.
Feast for the Eyes!!.......2000-09-09
This book is a wonderful feast of photos of the worlds best and most famous jewelry - including profiles of some of the owner's such as Jackie Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana, etc. One of the most beautiful books on jewelry that I have encountered.

Book Description
Al Williamson stands in rarified air, among the titans of the development of comics as an art form. Drawing from the tradition of the heyday of book, advertising, and comic-strip illustration, Williamson brought a command of craft and dynamics rarely seen, before or since, to a field that had largely valued speed over skill. As part of an amazing stable of young artists at E.C. in the 1950s, Williamson helped change the industry forever although much of his work of the era has remained hidden. This work includes a diverse array of fantasy, science fiction, westerns, war stories, and more that showcases the astonishing range of this master of the form. Al Willaimson: Hidden Lands at last uncovers these stories from his days at Atlas, E.C., Charlton, Harvey, Dell, and more - including collaborations with Roy Krenkel, Wally Wood, Frank Frazetta, and other top creators of the era - most of which have never been reprinted as well as a wide array of material that has never before been published, including fascinating sketches and works from his career's infancy and photos from the artist's personal scrapbooks. Covered in fascinating depth by writers Mark Schultz, Thomas Yeates, and Steve Ringgenberg and gathered from extensive, lively interviews with Williamson, Al Williamson: Hidden Lands is an essential volume for any fan of this giant of graphic fiction as well as for those interested in comics history of the classic era of pen-and-ink illustration.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Art Showcase by Al Williamson.......2007-09-17
This is one of the best collections of work on Al Williamson that I have ever seen. One really gets a great look at some rather obscure works (at least I haven't seen them before:) by Williamson. Fans of Mark Shultz will really see a large pool of Shultz's inspiration in these pages. The Black and White reproductions really gives the reader to really enjoy the line work of this comic book master.
Good info, but too heavy on the westerns.......2005-05-25
This 222-page + index collection is an interesting but frustrating collection of Al Williamson's 1950s artwork. In addition to representative samples of illustrations and cartoon panels, the book discusses the artist's life from birth, his artistic heroes and collaborators, and the environment in which comic-book artists worked in the 1950s. Note that everything is in black and white.
29 complete stories are included. Mostly 4-5 pages in length, 11 are westerns (some written by Stan Lee) and 8 are science fiction collaborations with Roy Krenkel (9 if you count the reincarnation romance "The Lost Lives of Laura Hastings.") Another romance, a war adventure ("Helpless"), a `horror' story ("Lower Than Hell"), 4 adventures of "Jann of the Jungle," and two historical tales from the EC comic VALOR ("The Champion" and "The Cloak of Command") are also presented in their entirety.
Everyone to their own taste - but I would have preferred having the entire Williamson/Kirby collaboration "The Face on Mars" and Archie Goodwin's first story ("Hermit," with Williamson inking over Reed Crandall's pencils) instead of all the western and "Jann" adventures combined! Furthermore the EC stories, including the sci-fi thriller "Food For Thought" (from INCREDIBLE SCIENCE FICTION #32, 1955), are reprinted elsewhere - samples would have sufficed, and certainly the text-referenced splash panel from "Homesick" should have been included - not everyone can go look it up!
Note that the "Williamson" illustration for vol 1 #5 of VENUS is quite plainly at least inked by Krenkel, although not attributed to him.
Al Williamson-Hidden Lands- An Excellent Package.......2004-11-17
All I can say is --WOW-- This is easily the best package of Al Williamson reprint material since the original "Art Of Al Williamson"(some twenty years ago).It includes unreprinted stories from Atlas and ACG,unplublished artwork(Jann Of the Jungle #18 to name one),as well as sketches, panels and pages.
This collection reprints alot of the Atlas Westerns and some of the Atlas sci-fi as well as a romance(?)story.
The best part is that there is very little overlap with any of the previous Al Williamson collection(Art of,Sketchbook,or Adventures). The only way it could be better is if it were a hardcover.

Book Description
The multiple Harvey and Eisner award-winning fantasy is now collected in one volume!
The 450-page Castle Waiting graphic novel tells the story of an isolated, abandoned castle, and the eccentric inhabitants who bring it back to life. A fable for modern times, Castle Waiting is a fairy tale that's not about rescuing the princess, saving the kingdom, or fighting the ultimate war between Good and Evilbut about being a hero in your own home.
For the first time, Fantagraphics' Castle Waiting collects the entire story into one mammoth volumeand includes the concluding chapter written and drawn especially for this volume.
Wittily reinterpreting the Grimm Brothers classic tale "Briar Rose" (Sleeping Beauty) as a story of love, enchantment, and sibling rivalry, the opening chapter "The Curse Of Brambly Hedge" sets the stage for the story.
In the second chapter, "The Lucky Road," Lady Jain's fairy-tale life turns out not-so-happily ever after, as she leaves to search for Castle Waiting, a wondrous, mythical refuge where "all are welcome." Jain soon finds the castle is very much a home as well as a refuge, and learns to fit in with its eccentric inhabitants as she discovers how she can help them bring the lonesome, dilapidated place back to life.
The third chapter, "Solicitine," tells the story of Peaceful Warren, a young woman destined and determined to live an unconventional life. From the barroom to the circus to the convent and beyond, this chapter is a tale of an extraordinary adventure, an extraordinary friendship, and of making a place for oneself in the world.
An artist with 20 years' experience in comics and children's books, Linda Medley lavishly illustrates Castle Waiting in a classic visual style reminiscent of Arthur Rackham and William Heath Robinson. Blending elements from a variety of sourcesfairy tales, folklore, nursery rhymesMedley tells the story of the everyday lives of fantastic characters with humor, intelligence, and insight into human nature. Castle Waiting can be read on multiple levels and can be enjoyed by children and literate adults.

A Castle of Enchantment - Bookwyrm Chrysalis Review.......2007-08-12
Wow did it take me a long time to get a copy! This book does not seem to be widely distributed, and I finally got it at the library, but you really want to try to get this reprint edition, as it also contains a prelude comic about the origins of the castle. The reprint is also much longer than the original TPB that I found.
This book is a collection of tales that reads like a bunch of intertwined short stories. It's hard to tell if later books have more of a "plot," but it's perfectly fine without an overarching story. We begin with the tale of Lady Jain leaving her home and follow her to Castle Waiting, where she hopes to find a safe haven to have her baby. There she meets an assortment of characters from "Beaky" (as the anthropomorphic horse knight likes to call him) the stork butler to Iron Henry the woodsman, who's heart is held together by iron bands after the death of his son.
Unlike many traditional American comic books, Castle Waiting is a character-driven story with lots of heart. The stories circle around the ordinary lives of those who live there, showing that there is little difference between talking horse-men, storks, and humans.
Since this is also a comic book, we of course need to talk about the art. Now, personally, when it comes to American comics, I want full color. So I'm a little disappointed that the book has a black and white interior. You just don't see B&W a lot these days, because it isn't that much cheaper and readers are going to be expecting color interiors.
Only the Beginning.......2007-05-29
I have collected, read and loved the Castle Waiting stories since their humble self-published comic book beginnings in the mid-1990's. While I thoroughly enjoyed the comics the first time that I read them, it wasn't until I re-read them several years later that I realized a depth of meaning to the story that I had been blind to before. Best suited for younger readers? Hardly. I bought this volume to give to a friend who is discovering "how to be a hero in your own home" at the age of 38. This is an all-ages read, in the best sense of the term.
It's a shame that readers new to Medley's work judge it without an awareness of the fact that it was originally published--over the course of ten years--in serialized form, and suffered from the vagaries of a number of different publishers (from Medley's editorial in issue #14, 2002):
"...When my former publisher insisted that I interrupt the current "boring" storyline of Jain's moving into her own room at the Castle with "a new storyline, and a new Number One!" I seriously doubted both the wisdom and the motivation of the idea. Nevertheless, I agreed to move up SOLICITINE, which I originally planned to appear in an upcoming story/timeline break, with the addition of the framing device of Sister Peace telling the story to Jain while killing time on a rainy day. Now, I care far too much about my characters and their stories to short-change them for anybody's marketing gimmick, so the story was told exactly as I intended it to be told. In the end, I am very pleased with the way it turned out. I hope at least some of you caught on to the fact that the story was about more than just bearded ladies; and that the beards were about more than just facial hair, as well..."
Obviously, some readers won't. I did, and the Solicitine Sisters are my favorite part of the book! Kudos to Fantagraphics for being the publishers to finally do justice to Medley's work, but I do wish they'd labeled this one "Volume I". I'm looking forward to the release of Volume 2 next year.
An amusing foray into the fantastic.......2007-05-29
I only recently started reading comics, despite being a reader of fantasy and sci-fi for close to 20 years. I guess I just missed out on the right influences when I was younger... One day, in an exploratory mood at the comic store, I happened to pick up one of the back issues. Most of the comics I've read so far have been more mainstream stories or modern fantasy (my favorites include Sandman, Fables, and Y: The Last Man at the moment) and I've sort of been looking for more traditional fantasy. But one of the reasons I stopped reading fantasy in the last few years was that it had become so formulaic and--might I say this horrid word--sexist. So this turned into a very pleasant surprise. Without thinking much about it, I bought the book. It did not disappoint, either. Imagine, finding both a nice little fantasy story book AND one written by a woman who knows how to tell traditional fantasy/fairy tale stories without falling completely into boring stereotypes of men and women, all in one go! It was indeed exciting.
I have read some indications that this is a feminist book. I would not go that far, as I don't think just because something deals more with 'women's topics' makes it inherently feminist. Women can be sexist, too. But in this case, the characters--both male and female--do show much more depth than you usually see in fairy tales or traditional fantasy. And more importantly, the book focuses on topics that are normally not dealt with in fantasy and that are generally considered women-centered. Specifically, these include domestic violence, pregnancy, and motherhood. Realistically, these subjects can touch all of our lives and we can all relate from our different perspectives. This all makes for interesting reading.
Some of the other reviewers have commented on the fact that the collection does seem to have two distinct sections: the first half which focuses on telling the stories of the current inhabitants of Castle Waiting, and the second half that focuses on stories about the bearded ladies (which are being told by one of the current residents). I'd agree that the first half is better, but I enjoyed the bearded ladies tales, as well. Besides, I think the first half is good enough to justify the entire book. It's nice to read about characters you can't help but like, even if you know they're a little idealistic to exist in the real world. It's fantasy, right?
From flat out excellent to flat out boring........2007-04-15
The first half of Castle Waiting was easily 5 stars. The stories were blended seamlessly and there was a hint of mystery to them. How, I wondered, would the history of the castle evolve? What new, quirky characters would emerge? The art was certainly fantastic. Well done, with enough of a hint of cartoonishness to make sure that you left reality at the door.
The second half was nowhere near as good. Virtually all of the characters we see in the first half, from the good witches to the protective gryphon to the ghost in the library, all vanish. Characters that we expect to play central roles, like the Knight and Rackham, are virtually ignored. Their backstories are dropped, even she who we expect to be one of the focal heroines, Jain, gets lost as the story removes itself from the mysteries of the castle completely and becomes a story about bearded women finding love and acceptance in a travelling circus and then a convent. And when I say half the book, I mean that quie literally. And this graphic novel is over 500 pages long.
In the end, I said "that's it? We wasted 250 pages on bearded women? What about the castle?" So much is dropped that it became apparent that the author, Linda Medley, was making it up as she went along, and forgetting much of it as she went off on a tangential story that was considerably worse than the one she started out writing. Maybe she'll make another volume, and I hope she does.
In the end, failing another volume that sticks to the story of the castle, ties up loose ends, and doesn't wander aimlessly away from that which was truly and spectacularly interesting, I cannot recommend that anyone buy this. But if you do, stop reading at the end of Chapter 12.
Castle worth waiting for.......2007-04-02
In the UK we don't seem to have as many comics/graphic novels available. I was really pleasantly suprised by Castle Waiting, the binding is really nice in that it looks like a proper fairytale book. The story was great and there was many little references to childhood stories we all know an love.
I just want to know is there any more......?? A sequel would be great!

A sweet, but somewhat unsatisfying saga.......2004-10-01
Linda Medley's, "Castle Waiting," is a sweet and gentle comic book series that manages to blend the genres of fantasy and fairy-tale quite effectively in entertaining fashion. In Volume #1, The Lucky Road, readers are introduced to the series' protagonist, Jain, as she looks to escape her past and start anew in a castle populated with whimsical characters both human and animal alike. While Medley's black and white art does little in the way of stylistic expression, it is perfectly suited to convey her simple and somewhat predictable storyline. On the whole, this series doesn't contain much 'wow' factor by way of story or art but nevertheless the charming characters and sugary storyline lends itself to an entertaining afternoons worth of reading.
The Lucky Reader.......2003-01-30
CASTLE WAITING was one of those books that I always looked at suspiciously. Try as I might, it seemed like one of those well-meaning independent comics that was a labor of love that would be so embedded in fantasy traditions, or so hellbent on smashing those traditions, that, in my mind, I granted the books the appeal of cod liver oil.
Instead, CASTLE WAITING is quiet. Linda Medley's linework is a touch too well-defined for my tastes, but it suits her characters and setting. Here, she creates a fantasy world that brings to life the types of characters that populate fairy tales and gives them comfortable personalities, warmth, and time to develop. The residents of the castle are much like the supportive but easygoing neighbors we see in contemporary stories in other media.
Though Medley creates some conflicts and a degree of pending menace, this volume's greatest fault may be it's relative lack of dramatic tension. Comic book readers used to rapidly propelled stories may find themselves having to adjust to the more relaxed pace. That is really just your cue to sit back and enjoy the details.
Excellent Collection of a Great Comic.......2003-01-02
I always enjoy this series whenever it comes to my local comic shop. It is an excellent fantasy story that has very memorable characters that are truly likable and you connect with quickly. The issues collected in this volume are just the beginning of what feels like an epic story. You will be right on your way to becoming hooked if you purchase this book since it collects the first eight issues of the series. And it establishes the setting well and leaves you wanting more when you get to the last chapter.... Linda Medley publishes "Castle Waiting" through her own company Olio, and every new issue that sells I'm sure will help her keep publishing.
One of the best that snuck under the radar.......2001-12-18
Go buy "Castle Waiting". Now. Whatever you can get your hands on, however many copies you can find. This is one of those amazing books that you just don't come across often enough.
Linda Medley's artwork is charming. Her stories are delightful. I don't think I can recommend this book *enough* to anyone who loves faery tales, graphic novels, comics in general, or just good stories and good art. I keep going back to re-read this one, and it's spent more time lent out to friends than sitting at home on my bookshelf.
Her characters are a treat. Her women are real: not glamorous, not perfect, not stereotyped, but portrayed like - *gasp!* - actual humans (a stunner in a graphic novel)! More wonderful than that, she has real male characters at the same time - there's no reverse-stereotyping going on, making for a full, well-rounded cast of characters that's remarkably true to life (no small feat in the fantasy genre). Issues like domestic abuse and loss are addressed, but not in obvious or preachy ways, and VERY positive male characters stand in direct contrast to the off-screen baddies that you never see in "The Lucky Road".
Her characters are just marvelous and memorable. I can't stress this enough. The book is sweet without being cloying, and just very, VERY clever.
I think it's appropriate for older children as well as wonderful for adults. This one goes on my holiday list for any moms with a sense of wonder, grownups who like fantasy and/or comix, and mature kids who like some substance to their stories. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.
Charm, Style, and Humor. And you thought comics were dead!.......2001-03-03
At first glance, CW appears to be a warmly illustrated children's comic. After awhile, however, parents and older siblings will realize that the book finds its most appreciate audience in themselves. (Subtle adult jokes sneak in between the all-ages appeal.)
With a delightful fairytale veneer (and a pleasantly researched medieval backdrop), quirky and endearing characters, and the promise of many unfolding storylines to come, it's no surprise that Castle Waiting is a rising star in the industry.
Linda Medley's narrative wit and lovely artistic style (not to mention Todd Klein's typically excellent lettering) make this entire book a pure delight. Here's hoping the word gets out about this wonderful effort.

Customer Reviews:
Why is this book not available???.......2003-06-10
Okay, this is the third edition of this book, published 2 months ago...AND IT'S NOT AVAILABLE!!! WHY???
This is a rare gem of a book. "Castle Waiting" is one of the best comic books (okay, "drawn books") ever. The characterization is fantastic. Linda Medley's drawing style is charming yet oddly realistic (her people look like people, not like how-people-should-look). Her focus on the "lesser" characters is interesting and long-overdue. Her fairness in terms of gender is refreshing. This retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" is riotous at times, touching at others.
Another reviewer mentioned her wonderful resource for children at the end. EARTH TO PARENTS! LINDA MEDLEY CARES WHAT YOUR CHILDREN READ! THIS ARTIST HAS WONDERFUL SUGGESTIONS FOR DEVELOPING YOUR CHILD'S MIND!!! Worth the price of admission right there. No, really - she has put her heart and soul into making this book as helpful and well-rounded as possible, in addition to being a great read.
I am constantly buying copies of "Lucky Road" for new moms. I've found that new mothers respond really well to the story of Jain and Pindar, and it's nice to have a different kind of storybook to put in a child's (or adult's!) library. I've been trying to get my hands on more copies of Brambly Hedge ('cause I'm not giving up my copy) to give to these same women and kids. It's very hard! It's really, REALLY unfair when all sorts of dreck gets offered through book sites and the good stuff isn't available.
I know Linda Medley is having trouble getting the monthly comic book out (at least, as per the last issue of CW). Go pick up "Lucky Road", go visit your local comics shop and buy them out of CW, ask your local bookstore to carry it, anything. Anything to keep her writing, anything to keep these books coming out. Few titles are this worthwhile. Really.
More than just a story...........2003-02-05
Linda Medley is a storyteller supreme. And her story re-telling is pretty darn impressive, too. The Curse of Brambly Hedge is Medley's take on the old story of Briar Rose (Which is, of course, very similar to the story so many of us know as "Sleeping Beauty".). Medley's dialogue and art are flexible and expressive and the story fairly leaps off the page. But what makes this book in this edition so priceless is the huge appendix at the end. Aimed at younger readers and drawn book newbies, she provides character drawings with instructions to experiment with coloring their costumes, a step-by-step guide to creating a character of your own, two guided exercises for creating your own story, helpful instructions on how to read pictures (e.g., what various lines around characters can mean and what the different dialogue bubbles signify), suggestions for classic stories to retell, a bibliography of such stories, and, finally, a list of resources for parents focussed on reading and stories. All that in 75 pages and for $9. This is an excellent place for anyone to start reading drawn books and the "Reading Pictures" is perfect for the person who wants to learn more about the medium by doesn't have time to digest Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics.
By the way, "drawn books" is Medley's term for what we normally call "comic books" or "graphic novels". I think this is a more accurate description, so I've adopted it.

Book Description
A fable for modern times, Castle Waiting tells the story of an isolated, abandoned castle, and the eccentric inhabitants who bring it back to life. It's a fairy tale that's not about rescuing the princess, saving the kingdom, or fighting the ultimate war between Good and Evil... but about being a hero in your own home. Volume 2 tells the story of Peaceful Warren, a young woman destined and determined to live an unconventional life. With over fifteen years experience in Comics and Children's Books, Medley's lavish, classic style is reminiscent of Arthur Rackham and William Heath Robinson.
