•A best-seller for 35 years

• A timeless classic that has taught generations of artists—and will teach generations more

When it was originally published in 1970, How to Draw What You See zoomed to the top of the publisher's best-seller list—and it has remained there ever since. "I believe that you must be able to draw things as you see them—realistically," wrote Rudy de Reyna in this introduction. Today, generations of artists have learned to draw what they see, to truly capture the world around them, using de Reyna's methods. How to Draw What You See shows artists how to recognize the basic shape to draw the object, no matter how much detail it contains.

I am just amazed at how quickly i received these books, i just wish the freight wasn't quite as dear, I would do much more, I give art classes in my studio and am on a limited budget, so to be able to offer these books at a cheaper rate is great , the condition of the books was terrific and have no hesitation in telling other people about this site, which i have done, the choice of art books seem to be much larger then here in Australia and especially the fact that we can get them secondhand in good condition is a plus..... thank you /very happy customer

This is a good book to help you define and sharpen your drawing skills. Even if you think you can't draw, give this book a try. It helps you to see what you're drawing instead of trying to draw what you think you saw. Highly recommended, with many projects in the book to use as practice.

Book Description

SEE like an artist, and draw like a pro!

If you think you can't draw, it's all in your head ... Every time you pick up a pencil, a battle rages between the two sides of your brain: Your analytical brain, which wants to generalize and take shortcuts; and your visual brain, which sees it like it is.

This innovative guide helps the "good guy" always win!

Following the success of his first book, Painting with Your Artist's Brain (North Light Books), Carl Purcell shows that the secret to creating true-to-life renderings--and overcoming the most common drawing problems--is silencing your bossy logical nature and letting your artistic side do what it does best. Thirteen interactive exercises and 10 step-by-step demonstrations lead you on an in-depth exploration of essential drawing skills:

You'll take the same observation-based approach whether you're drawing a pear, a portrait or a landscape. No subject will be beyond your reach, and you'll be amazed at your sudden mastery of drawing!

4 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners.......2007-05-25

This is a good comprehensive book for beginners and covers most things of importance, but it has a few defects. The reference photos from which the drawings are done are too small, making it difficult to see what the author is talking about. The author leaves his sighting lines on his drawings, which is like leaving up the scaffolding after painting a house--it looks unsightly. He drones on for too long about values. Toward the end of the book, he runs out of things to say, and the book becomes a gallery to show off the author's drawings.

    Book Description

This is a book about seeing the ultimate mystery as represented by the figure of God. It is not about religion per se, although it makes reference to many of the great religious traditions of the world and their gods. Rather, it is about the presence of the spiritual world and its inhabitants. The author's aim is to attempt to answer the question, How do we see God? through engaging with the images created by a group of children from a number of different cultures and spiritual backgrounds. Through a two-year period, the author travelled the world interviewing more than 500 children, asking them to draw a picture of God, to act and speak as God, and to tell a story about God. This text is a documentation of that journey into the lives and spiritual beliefs of children. Throughout the book, a broad selection of pictures and stories by the children is reproduced and paraphrased. The author offers his own commentaries, not as an analyst in a psychological sense or critic in a literary one, but as a God-seeker trusting in the power of the image to reveal meaning. This unique book will be of primary interest to professionals in the field of psychology, especially child and family therapists, as well as art and drama therapy, sociology, and theology. The book will also have appeal to parents and children who are looking for ways to understand their belief systems in relationship to others.

4 out of 5 stars An impartation into your spirit..........2006-03-09

Cooke writes prophetically and impartationally to a readership that is open to receiving the insights and revelation that God has in-store for him/her. As I read this book, it caused me to think and reflect on my own walk with God, and Cooke writes that the key and main thing that God desires is inhabitation in our lives. With that, many things becomes an outflow.

At the beginning of the book, Cooke writes about a very important question, i.e. why do we need revival? The answer is simply because we lost it! We have lost the presence and purpose of God in our lives, ministries and churches. Revival actually shows our weakness rather than strength.

"The biggest desire in God's heart is inhabitation. If you search through the Scriptures, you'll find that coming and living with His children is all He has ever wanted. What we usually pray for, however, is another move of God. Unlike inhabitation, there is no call for revival found anywhere in Scripture. The Church, quite simply, should never need reviving. Revival is not about getting people saved; revival is about the Church coming back to her original purpose before God. I think it's very sad that so many of us have prayed and longed for revival - it means the Church is a long way from what God wants us to be." (pg. 16)

As a person is inhabited with God, there will be a renewal that constantly takes place, and the outflow of worship, peace, joy, etc. will come forth. I was ministered in the section when Cooke writes about the mischievous and happy nature of God, and how He would do what seemingly is irrational, but shows forth that God is God! He uses the incidents of Gideon's small army. and the circumcision of the Israelites when they just crossed into the promise land and having to face enemies. These 2 events seems humanly crazy, but at the end, it is not by the might of men, but by the power of God that victories are won.

Cooke also writes about 2 dreams that he had, which was a profound encounter with God, and gave me a deeper insight to the heart of God for us. I recommend you to pick up this book, and to read it meditatively and reflectively.

        Book Description

Matteo Pericoli began his spectacular drawing of Manhattan in 1998. Manhattan Unfurled was published in October 2001 and was quickly embraced by New York City and the entire country. In this new version for young people, the drawing is bound into two sections (East Side and West Side) in an unusual and eye-catching new format. Pericoli adds simple text, and hand-drawn labels, telling young readers how he came to create his drawing (the journey includes boat rides, a motorcycle, and hundreds of photographs). He also enourages kids to see—and draw—a place in a whole new way. “Draw everything,” he tells them, “and you’ll know a place as you never did before.” A wonderful tribute to Manhattan, to cities, and to thinking like an artist.

Praise for Matteo Pericoli’s Manhattan Unfurled (Random House adult trade):

“Pericoli has fixed a moment of the ever-shifting skyline, and done so with delicacy and authority.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Pericoli’s drawing is at once monumental and gentle . . . together the buildings seem almost to be swaying softly in a chorus line along the Hudson.”—The New Yorker

“Seen through [Pericoli’s] eyes, Manhattan takes on the quality of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.”—Vogue

"Drawing to See" is an excellent book for someone interested in a somewhat basic explanation of the aspects of drawing responsively. It is a contracted presentation of the concepts presented in two other books by Goldstein, "The Art of Responsive Drawing" and "Design and Composition". I feel that "Drawing to See" would be an excellent text for Drawing I and II classes at the community college level.

Children's artwork can be a view into their soul. Myra Levick leads us to a better understanding of the emotions, thoughts and developmental growth of our children. This book helps parents, teachers and therapists expand their understanding of children on a unique level enabling them to be wonderful guides to our precious offspring.

5 out of 5 stars Children's Expression of Meaning Through Art.......2007-04-04

Dr. Levick takes the reader on a developmental journey with special emphasis on how the maturing child up to age twelve expresses meaning throguh drawing. The journey begins at about one-and-a-half-years to two years of age with mere scribbles, going on to navigate through a series of "stage/sequences" to manifestly meaningful pictures of people and objects. The period of adolescence, where the task is to shape order out of chaos, is also discussed, but the focus is mainly on the earlier years.

The book is a tour de force of blending words and images, each reciprocally reinforcing the author's intended message. Both intellectual and emotional development are covered. There is a parralelism in the writing which offers a view of normal development as expressed in art and signs of delayed or disordered development, as well. The manifold pictorial illustrations that are provided drive home the message of the book. The prose is lucid and accessible to everyone, although the work is recommended in particular to parents, teachers, and caregivers. "See What I'm Saying" is also a book that can profit psychotherapists who practice through other modalities also. the reader will find the book illuminating and captivating. But one must take heed of Dr. Levick's professional and ethical comments to the effect that the layperson, meaning someone without art therapy training, must avoid making inferential diagnoses of pathology from the child's drawings. Further, even the art therapist must move cautiously, being sure to place the picture in the context of the child's overall life, taking into account physical, relational, and environmental considerations.

Although I am not an art therapist, I have spent forty years in the mental health field as a professor, verbal psychoherapist, and educational administrator. I have had many art therapy colleagues. I believe Dr. Levick's book makes a unique contribution to the field of non-verbal communication through the medium of children's maturation as expressed in their developing art work.

Hugh Rosen, D.S.W., Philadelphia, Pa., author of "Silent Battlefields: A Novel."

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sourcebook.......2007-03-05

Dr. Levick's book is a wonderful addition in the field of knowledge about the drawings of children. Here, she has provided the reader with strategies for understanding how drawings are correlated to child development and the warning signals/graphic indicators that give cause for concern. Such information is important when helping children deal with emotional traumas/childhood conflicts. This is an invaluable resource for those in counseling, education, and healthcare, and others interested in leaning how children's art is a natural language.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Teachers, Parents and Therapists.......2007-03-04

This book is fantastic for understanding communication from children through their drawings. Dr. Levick has given us wonderful, colorful pictures of actual drawings by children and an understanding of why and how they are communicating in their pictures. It gives us a clear understanding of what to expect and when, a sequential guide to ciphering a child's inner world through his art. I was fascinated the degree to which these drawings have helped me understand children. As an arts educator, I have used this book in my arts methods for elementary school teachers. The students have really enjoyed learning all this from such as beautiful book. I most highly recommend it for teachers, parents, professionals and anyone who works with children.

            Book Description

An Illustrated Guide to Shark Etiquette is filled with the no-holds-barred, undersea humor that has made Sherman's Lagoon an international success. Syndicated since 1991, it appears in almost 150 newspapers in the U.S., Europe, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Australia. The popular cartoon features a dim-witted shark named Sherman, his sea turtle sidekick Fillmore, and an assortment of other coral reef critters who team up to battle the encroachment of civilization on their remote tropical paradise in the South Pacific. As isolated as they are, they still manage to deal with all of modern life's "conveniences" and issues, with hilarious results. Sherman is, shall we say, not the sharpest fishhook in the tackle box. One minute he exasperates Fillmore with nonsensical ideas like video taping every moment of his day in case something happens. Then, when something really does occur-say the arrival of space aliens-Fillmore later discovers that all that was documented was the back of the camera's lens cap! Toomey has a remarkable talent for making a great white who's always on the prowl for a human snack into a lovable lump of a guy. This third Sherman's Lagoon collection offers another engaging assortment of comic strips and a wonderful good time for readers of all ages.

My youngest son was a big fan of Sherman's Lagoon, but I had never paid any attention until we got this volume. It was fantastic! We will be collecting all of the volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Calvin and Hobbes, Zits and now Shermans Lagoon..........2005-09-07

I bought one collection to try, then wound up purchasing the entire published collection of Sherman Lagoon books for my 13 year old son who absolutely loves them. The setting is the ocean world, but all that transpires reflects the "real" world above. The humor is insightful, a bit cynical and the characters colorful. We're waiting for more....

            5 out of 5 stars Never stale.......2001-07-06

The third book of Jim Toomey's (yes, aztecprincess, he IS darn sexy) hilarious strip "Sherman's Lagoon" shows no signs of waning or staleness. Few strips can achieve -- or surpass -- the surreality of Calvin and Hobbes, and this is one of those few. ("Liberty Meadows" is another, sadly not in books yet...)

It features doofus, perpetually human-hungry shark Sherman; irritable wife Megan (don't cross her if you value your life); Fillmore the nerdy and cultured sea turtle; Hawthorne the malicious and loudmouthed little hermit crab; and recurring character Ernest, sarcastic and geeky little fish.

Among the crazy adventures are: Bill Gates buys the island, Megan thinks she's pregnant, Fillmore actually gets a date (something is wrong, of course), the return of irritating Thornton the warm-weather polar bear, Hawthorne's annual shell-changing--and of course, lots of Sherman-chases-beach-apes-aka-humans and Hawthorne-pinches-beach-ape-toes!

The pop culture references in the isolated tropical island make a bizarre combo (Starbucks, for example) and the sight of a shark at a computer should theoretically be strained and overdone. However, given the colorful personalities and kooky situations at Kapupu Island, even sea boogers will find this entertaining in Toomey's skilled and skewed imagination!

5 out of 5 stars Our wicked, sexy Jim Toomey DOES it again!!!.......2001-03-08

It must really BOGGLE the mind to think that such a handsome hunk like him could come up with such wacky, off-the-wall comedies under the sea! There's plenty of satire, parody, slapstick, lowbrow humor, and oooh...even a little risqueness to boot! (You just DON'T want to know WHERE the geeky Ernest holds his secret club!) Real sly, man.

Here in the third book, Sherman is his usual old man-eating self; Megan remains a shrewdish old missus; Fillmore continues to be your bookish cynic who just can't get a date; Hawthorne is still a stubborn and selfish old crab as usual; and the bespectacled Ernest is the very same computer-savvy nerd as ever before.

In other words, they are quite the same sea-dwelling characters we all know and love. Yet they are all caught up in the newest and silliest adventures - this time, in the show biz, the big romantic getaways, and the fishing contests. Why, they are even invaded by sea boogers, space dogs, and Bill Gates as well as a beached whale being talked out of a suicide and Megan getting PREGNANT!!! So just kick back and enjoy such a crazed fantasy world so lovingly conjured up by the Playgirl candidate!;)

5 out of 5 stars Even Better Than His Last Book.......2000-12-15

It's not often that something this clean and inoffensive appeals to a bunch of South Park fans, but Sherman's Lagoon has done it. It has been impossible to keep my hands on since my friends have discovered it, and we really do keep pointing out, "Have you read THIS one?" This book is a keeper.

            5 out of 5 stars He's Back!!!.......2003-03-15

Hilarious reviews of B-Movies done in Joe Bob's initimable style - guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

Not for the sexually repressed (he often rates movies by the number of "boobs" that are visible), this series of reviews from the Movie Channel's "Drive In Theatre" host's syndicated newspaper column preaches the Drive-In gospel.

Actually, the author is a very sharp man who realized the way to get maximum attention was to adopt a beer guzzling, trailer park living Good Ol' Boy White Trash persona.

The funniest film reviews I've ever read - get this and his first book of reviews "Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In" (what/where else?!)

            5 out of 5 stars JOE BOB'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN!.......2000-08-06

Joe Bob's second (to date) collection of drive-in movie reviews is equally as funny as his first. He picks up from the infamous "We Are the Weird" column, which got him tossed off the Dallas Slimes-Herald and out of the El Lay Slimes Syndicate, then goes into his next weekly column (he was picked up by Universal Press Syndicate without ever missing a column). The reviews are often far more entertaining than the films, and his hilarious slice-o'-life segments are some of the best humor pieces out there. This one's a real winner for drive-in fans and people who just like to LAUGH alike!

            5 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS.......2000-03-28

Joe Bob Briggs is an awesome character. His reviews of "B" movies are usually dead-on accurate and to the point. (He is the only critic next to Ebert that isn't ashamed to like so-called "trashy" flicks. Ths collection of reviews from his newspaper columns is a must read for fans of good ol' drive-in type movies. It also contains Briggs' hysterical monologues on life in Grapevine, TX , as well as his opinions on life.

Joe Bob goes to the Drive-in Is with out a doubt a great read reads. He makes anyone who passes his time seeing B movies and hanging out with his friends feel like they are not alone
and I love the times when he bashes a movie as a critic and then tells how he enjoys it as a fan, And if that is not enough Joe Bobs stories of His friends and Non Friends will definetly keep you entertained.
The drive in will never die

5 out of 5 stars We're Talking Serious Chopsocky, Here, Folks.......2003-02-28

...and we're talking an anthology of uniquely American satire - by a man who truly believes that a sacred cow is worth but one thing (namely: steak!) - with that classic American institution of sideward mobility (the drive-in theater) serving merely as the setup man for the most classic lancing of America's boils since H.L. Mencken roasted the booboisie and Artemus Ward proclaimed that if we can't find a live man who's worth a thing, by all means let us find a first class corpse.

Beaucoup garbanzas, mountains of mashed internal organs, kung fooey out the yin-yang, slashings, smashings, chainsawings, bonechoppings, drillings, you name it. And it isn't just the cheeseball drive-in celluloid (yes, children, once upon a time there was celluloid) that gets dismembered, disemboweled, and dehydrated by the classic Briggs scythe: it's the absolute and utter pretentiousness of the smugger-than-thou film critic colony (there are exceptions; you will know them by their lack of implied slash in a typical Joe Bob joust) and the politically correct pissants who tried, and in the long run failed, to bring him down, that get the real roasting in here.

(Come on - you don't REALLY think "We Are The World" was either sacred or a cow, so much as it was a lot of bull, as any of those starving African children - who gorged themselves on all the food the monies didn't provide them, because it was lining the hips of the Communist french fry heads who ran the show in Ethiopia, gave one gander to the white man formerly known as the black man named Michael Jackson and friends, with their precious pietous paen to giving until it hurt, and decided they'd had their biggest laugh since the invention of the axle - can tell you. Do you? And these days, Joe Bob's slash-and-burn against Wacko and the gang would be considered downright lightweight, compared to some of the chazerei getting spouted off by cable TV comics and the lunatics fringe left and right.)

Rated OK for gratuitous satire. DukeBob says check it out. Five stars. (Actually, there's only one star of this show.)

4 out of 5 stars If you know what I mean, and I think you do........2002-11-06

Excellent reading for the b-movie (and otherwise) fan. Not only do we get movie reviews with blood, breast and decapitation counts, we get a bit of history watching Joe Bob's (John Bloom) Dallas newspaper column pro-gress. Part of the fun is knowing that this stuff was printed in the newspaper, in Dallas, in the 80s. He gets in spats with various entities (the mayor of Irving, TX) and creates endearing (or disgusting, depending on your perspective) fictional characters. I particularly enjoyed the letters-to-the-editor he would respond to. Only 4 stars because he basically says to check out every movie he reviews (even if it sucks).

5 out of 5 stars This is OUT OF PRINT? Dumb move.......2002-06-01

by Delacourt, this is a cult classic just as much as any of the movies Joe Bob reviews. John Bloom's beer-guzzling, womanizing, politically incorrect alter ego unleashes subtle social commentary while reviewing some of the worst travesties ever committed to film based on the number of people who die, how they die, and how many women take their tops off. Bloom went so far as to get Joe Bob banned from Texas newspapers, for a racial satire on "We Are The World". Stephen King writes the intro. If you are a fan of all that is bad in cinema (lo-budget horror, women in jail films, kung fu), you cannot go thru life not reading this. ....

Five stars. I say check it out.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must have for all Drive-In Fans!.......1998-07-19

Joe Bob Briggs goes the distance to bring to you the ultimate list of the best Drive In movies. This collection of newspaper articles that Joe Bob wrote is funny and entertaining. Also, you get a peek into Joe Bob's life as well as his early career. From his very first article to him being run out of Texas on a rail, it's a great story!
