An unbelievably close look at a child's feelings.......2007-06-23

In this book, Jenna Forrest has really captured a child's view of life in a way that brings us, as adults, back to our own childhood feelings and memories with a clarity most of us have likely lost.

As a parent, it is refreshing to realize how our own children may perceive things that to adults may seem ordinary or important. I hope to take this perspective into my daily interactions with understanding my own children.

A true story, Forrest bravely bares her soul in a memoir that is sure to touch every reader. There were many inspirational messages throughout the book, discovered by Forrest as she matured. My favorite being one that we all can and should bring to our own adult lives... "Being closer to people. I think that's what freedom really is... Realizing with relief that you are at last ready to show people your eyes instead of your back." I think it takes great courage to do this and I know I strive each day to live in just that way.

A fantastic read. Great front cover, but I don't think the description on the back cover does justice to the depth of the story.

This commanding true narrative leaves you hanging onto every word. The author's writing style creates powerful images for the reader, as if you are struggling right along side this young girl.

I thought this was a great book. So many times, it's so easy to remember childhood as an easy time when all anyone had to do was play and had no responsibilities. Often we forget that childhood is actually a
very tough, confusing time for anyone, especially a deeply emotional and sensitive kid like Jenna. In the book, Jenna Forrest vividly explores the fears, love, anxiety, and wonder of childhood not through the filter of an adult looking back, but through the wide-open eyes of a child. And she nails it. The sights and smells of the world of a child are so real and tangible you feel like you're really living in Jenna's skin. I recommend this book for anyone who was ever a child (and to anyone who ever wants to be a parent.) There are an amazing number of life lessons here, but the tone is never pandering or didactic. She just let's the world unfold and allows us an intimate peek into a time of life that most of us have boxed up and long forgotten.

This book is wonderful. Every other thought contained within the Indigo Animal is profound; I had to make myself slow down to read it because there was so much information to gather from each little sentence. It really isn't a children's book, despite all the great pictures. Maybe you know this, but just in case. It's the story of an animal finding a community to help him explore. This is a great book to keep around the house for when you're feeling uninspired or blue. or indigo.

i love indigo animal. I picked this up at the Dia Center in Beacon, NY, in hopes that the 2hour car trip home wouldn't be as hellish as the ride up (thanks, infrequent-car-riding children!) While the six-year-old is especially lacking in the life experience to understand what it's like to feel a passionate attachment to something that the fashionable crowd has deemed laughable and pas-a-la-mode, even he could get behind Indigo's need for sanctuary, for something meaningful.

I'll bet Indigo is the sort who picks up broken shells. A tender hearted creature. Still waters, running deep, seldom visited. The antithesis of television, video games, and dare I say, the internet.

Indigo made me think of friends I haven't seen since college.

A lovely, shady book.

Aside from being the most visually charming "graphic novel"
ever produced, Indigo Animal is vital literature. Literature that conveys meaning through the power of feeling that it delivers to the reader. You could sit with your five year old and read it aloud, you could read it to your shrink or your clergyman or your grandparents, and each of them would respond to Indigo's joy of search and discovery.

What is to be done with a four-footed creature, apparently mammal, of an unknown age, of unspecified gender who reads Epictitus and the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius?

Before you read that next book of Dogen, Chodron, Tolle or Dr. Phil, do yourself a splendid favor and pick up a copy of Indigo Animal. It does not matter how many Sanskrit texts you have personally translated or how many Lotus Feet you have kissed, if you have not met Indigo you are at great risk of spiritual illiteracy.

The sequel to "Indigo Animal", Indigo Animal and the Lawn Statuary Research Institute is a delightful, full-color picturebook for all ages. Unlike most picturebooks, which tend to be very brief in length, Indigo Animal and the Lawn Statuary Research Institute is quite lengthy, though each page contains only a sentence or two at most of text. Following the wanderings of the "overly serious" indigo animal past works of great art, about a most unusual campus, Indigo Animal and the Lawn Statuary Research Institute blends an appreciation for artistic creations, good- natured humor, and the thirst for knowledge into an engaging and original read-aloud story. There is some mild nudity present in Indigo Animal and the Lawn Statuary Research Institute, in the illustration's portrayal of a classical work of female Greco-Roman sculpture, all quite tastefully done. Highly recommended.

Roy Frowick Halston is rolling over in his grave faster than he ever did at Studio 54. The sorry accumulation of texts and stilted design make this a disappointment for Halston fans.

Does it address the body of work? No. We have had stupid anecdotal accounts galore, but this is a shame-faced attempt to be - WHAT? Coffee table tome? It cannot be. Too ugly. Some quality assessment of his millieu? Not a thing. Who are all of these parties involved? Embarrassing. Do not waste your money.

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER UNDERWHELMING BIO on a Fashion Designer...Considering how important he was, the book is poorly edited, and cheaply done. It is well-researched though, but this hardly gives the reader a feeling for how this man changed the way women dress...I FELL ASLEEP!

Excellent Tale.......2007-02-19

Unlike Golden Age crossovers which dealt with Earth 1 and 2, this crossover between the two super justice teams does not need any sort of bizarre extra-dimensional rift. They are just getting together for dinner. Batman and Mr. Terrefic have the best conversations and it is a story that shold translate for years to come.
The art is also top-notch. I recommend this book higly.

WHY WOULDN"T YOU?.......2005-08-09

This book combines the art of Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino (Penciler and Inker respectively) and the writing talents of David Goyer and Geoff Johns. With that said I shouldn't have to write this review...but I will anyway. This story combines the powerhouse legends of the Golden Age with the mightiest superheroes of the Silver Age with a Modern twist. It adds depth to a hero that was lacking alot of personality (Captain Marvel), and shows how to beat the world's best superheroes. If you like the JSA or the JLA BUY THIS BOOK! On top of everything else, this book was originally offered only in hardcover. Now it is in softcover so you have no excuses.

When I finished this book, I was disappointed. Do not get me wrong, It is a great book. But it raised my expectations too high. Carlos Pacheco's art is first class. The villians are powerful. There is a nice twist. I just was looking for more of the Vice League.

Reviving a worthy tradition!.......2004-02-08

I'll admit that my review of this book is probably colored by the fact that I read the two volumes of "Crisis of Multiple Earths" back-to-back before reading this one. The two "Crisis" volumes collect the justly-classic JLA/JSA crossovers from 1960 to 1970 reminding younger readers about the annual events of the two groups meetings in the Silver Age. All that however, ended in 1985 with Crisis on Infinite Earths. This present volume by Geoff Johns, David Goyer, Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino attempts to revive that grand tradition.

The current members of both teams JLA and JSA decide to meet for Thanksgiving, they take down a villain together and end up in another meeting at the JSA Museum. This is where everything goes crazy! Team members started acting all weird... suffice to say, events take on a global-cataclysmic-level and the "still-normal" members of both teams are thrown all over the place (Limbo, Fate's Crossroads Tower, etc.). They then brought in all the "reserve members" like Black Canary, Green Arrow, Firestorm, Zatanna, etc. to save the day. So you can imagine the number of characters artists Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino have to draw! And boy did they do a bang-up job with the art. Detailed, yet clear. Clean-lines, realistic renderings of hair, clothing, wrinkles, etc. yet with a Byrne-like sense of cartooning fun. As for the writing, I would say that Goyer and Johns do far better-writing on their monthly JSA title than here. Sure, there are many "cool character-moments" and the threat here is big but nothing like the kind of energy you get from their monthly title. Like another reviewer mention, this story is good but not great. My advice, get it in softcover rather than hardcover. The paper quality in the softcover is very good (unlike the usually very-thin paper used in other DC collections). But GET it, nonetheless. This book marks a return to the great annual tradition of JLA/JSA meetings... and I say it's about time!

If you are a big fan of MAD's movie and television parodies then you want to know before you start flipping through the pages of "MAD Power" that you are not going to find any of the classics. Instead there are a couple of rather different types of parodies. "Song of Mighty Joe Kong," drawn by Mort Drucker and written by Dick De Bartolo, combines "King Kong," "Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" into a new film starring James Garner, Doris Day, and Dick Van Dyke (with Richard Burton as the title character). Unfortunately, I think you have to be raised on Doris Day films to really enjoy the merger of the giant ape film with her particular brand of movie comedy. Then Drucker teams up with Larry Siegel for "MAD Looks at a Typical Kiddie TV Show," starring Uncle Nutsy. Again, it is the genre under comic assault more than a specific target.

"MAD Power" was originally published in 1964, which means you have to remember that this was before the Beatles showed up on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and changed American pop culture, forcing the Usual Gang of Idiots at the magazine to retool. But if you are looking for what was funny during the Kennedy Administration, editor Albert B. Feldstein has provided a nice survey. The best indication of this is the "Famous People's Home-Study Courses" put together by artist Bob Clarke and writer Al Jaffee, which includes one from ten famous space travelers featuring not only Shepard and Glenn, but Laika the dog, Jose Jimenez, and Alfred E. Neuman. Frank Jacobs and all of the MAD artists put together a series of "MAD's Valentines to American Industry" and Dave Berg provides his "Lighter Side" looks at both Adult and Kids Parties.

The other choice parts in this one are "I Got All the Finks I Need," Bob Clarke and Larry Siegel's rejoinder to Charles Schulz's Peanuts book "I Need All the Friends I Can Get," and the semi-complete issue of "Phony Magazine." This parody of a specialty magazine (remember, this was before computers allowed such things to be targeted to any and all groups) includes ads for phony labels and phony accent lessons, a look at the "Phony of the Month," and a test to find out how phony you are. You will also find several bits from Dave Martin, Spy vs. Spy, and Sergio Argonnes.

The other thing to pay attention to here is the concerted efforts to warp the minds of America's children. Realizing that children's safety songs are usually based on old-fashioned subjects, such as playing with matches (e.g., "Bad, Bad, Matches" sung to the tune of "Frere Jacques"), Joe Orlando and Larry Siegel come up with some "Up-to-Date Safety Songs for Children" (e.g., "It's A Grand Old Bag" sung to the tune of "You're A Grand Old Flag"). Then there is Al Jaffee's "A Child's View of Newspaper Headlines" on things like "School Tax to Be Higher" and "South Vietnam Army Heads Removed." This reprint collection is a nostalgic look at comedy from simpler times from warped minds, which is a pretty good combination to have when you go back that far.

This book is a riot. There are 9 authors from all over the world who write 5 pieces each. I don't think I have ever laughed so much in my entire life. It's wacky, witty, smutty, weird but most of all funny. I highly recommend this publication.
