Book Description
This generously illustrated volume, the first in the Art in the Twentieth Century series, introduces and explores a range of contemporary issues and debates about art and its place in the wider culture today. The opening chapter discusses key concepts such as modernity, modernism, autonomy, spectatorship and globalisation. It is followed by four case studies, each of which is devoted to a specific work of art chosen from across the span of the century: Marcel Duchamp's Bottlerack, Barnett Newman's Eve, Ana Mendieta's Silueta series, and Yarla by the Australian Aboriginal Yuendumu community. These works have been selected not only for their intrinsic interest, but for the way in which they open up wider questions of meaning and interpretation that are central to understanding twentieth-century art.

Simple in cut and decoration, they feature distinctive vertical and horizontal effects and unique imagery. You can make dozens of these beautiful traditional patterns with the more than 100 graphed designs featured here! This pictorial overview not only gives readers patterns to follow, but suggests way of adapting the styles to individual tastes. Every technique is covered. Try purling, openwork, multicolored knitting, and casting. Create narrow and wide ribbing, zigzags, and decorative patterns. Make typical designs, with the fine touches that distinguish Nordic knitwear. Knit sweaters with a stockinette stitch, damask shirts, raglan sweaters, coarse yarn sweaters, and small jackets such as farmhands once wore. Good news and bad news!.......1999-07-29
I like this book a great deal, and I reference it frequently. It has information, photos, pattern charts, and drawings that deal with the Scandinavian knitting tradions. Some of it is very different from American or English traditions. HOWEVER, do not expect to find stitch by stitch mitten or sweater patterns. There are none! This book is more about technique; for example, there is a very good section on socks. This includes details for turning the heel, etc, but no exact pattern for the whole sock. Instead you create your own, and now you can knit a sock to any size or with any yarn you might have lying around. This is not a book for a timid knitter who likes to have everything laid out for him/her in the instructions; it does not offer that kind of information. It is still an interesting read and a good reference for those who like traditional and/or ethnic knitting. (And as far as I am concerned, this is the only kind of knitting.)

The Book of Bunny Suicides follows over one hundred bunnies as they find ever more outlandish ways to do themselves in. From an encounter with the business end of Darth Vader's lightsaber, to supergluing themselves to a diving submarine, to hanging around underneath a loose stalactite, these bunnies are serious about suicide.
Illustrated in a stark and simple style, The Book of Bunny Suicides is a collection of hilarious and outrageous cartoons that will appeal to anyone in touch with their evil side.

It's cute but..........2007-09-25
Very cute humor but...
Unless your getting this as a gift for someone or it's an inside joke you've been looking for your whole life, I don't recommend buying this book simply because it is too short. Cute though... Not for animal rights advocates.
my cheeks hurt!!.......2007-09-09
If you are in anyway feeling a bit blue, take a look at this book!
Great!!!.......2007-08-23
I love this book, if you like the bunny suicides this is a great book for the collections.
I have to meet this guy!.......2007-08-10
The first thing I'd ask him is when the
image of fluffy little bunnies doing themselves
in came to his mind. Oh yeah, and what was he
doing at the time. In church? Changing his
oil? Filling out a tax form?
Then the next thing I'd want to know is whether
it was difficult to come up with all these
mostrous ways to say goodbye. I mean-did the bunny
in the lobster tank with the scuba gear just come
to him?
And then finally I'd tell him about standing in a
bookstore in Rome with the Italian version of his
book and gagging with laughter. (Romans rarely laugh
in public) and having everybody stare at me. I'd tell
him about giving a copy to my 20-year old daughter who
speaks no italian and having her get it.
And then I'd take him out for a drink.

the perfect gift.......2007-01-24
I really loved this book, I brought this as a present for someone who was leaving work, we share the same sense of humour. I think this book is really funny, a little sick perhaps but great. It is really simple, yet a creation of pure genius, it is enough to bring you out of the worst mood with a smile.

Rabbits. We'll never quite know why, but sometimes they decide they've just had enough of this world. A Box of Bunny Suicides follows over two hundred bunnies as they find ever more outlandish ways to do themselves in. From an encounter with the business end of Darth Vader's light saber to hiding under an elephant's footstool, no stone goes unturned (or undropped, or uncatapulted) as these twisted little cuties sign off in style.
A Box of Bunny Suicides combines Andy Riley's two cult favorite books, The Book of Bunny Suicides and The Return of the Bunny Suicides, and will appeal to anyone in touch with their darker side.

OMG.......2007-08-16
You can't imagine how ingenious you should be in order to kill yourself. This set shows you the way.
Nice Twist on an Old Favorite.......2007-05-30
As a fan of "Unpleasant Ways to Die" by Elan Fleisher, I thoroughly enjoyed the dichotomous use of bunnies in the hilariously morbid scenarios. Brilliantly dark and twisted, many a cube-dweller will be inspired to adorn their stark walls with these fanciful images of death. They will also serve to weed out those who do not share your humor. Call it natural selection.
Bunny Suicides.......2007-03-08
Too bad most of the cartoons weren't as funny as the ones I was able to see beforehand. While amusing at times, the book also manages to become trying at times.
Couldn't be funnier.......2007-01-10
Sometimes you just need the off-beat humor of Andy Riley. The cute little bunnies in the throes of depression are more than a twisted cause for laughter. They're a reminder that people tend to take life far too seriously. People of all ages enjoy these books. I would also recommend Riley's Great Lies to Tell Small Children.
Be Warned.......2006-12-07
This is not item 3 in the series. It is the first 2 books packaged together. they are hilarious, but it's not so hilarious to order it thinking it's a new book when it's just the first 2.
Book Description
Return of the Bunny Suicides follows over one hundred bunnies as they find ever more bizarre ways to end their fuzzy little existences. From swimming with nibbly fishes, to hiding under an elephant's footstool, to getting on the sharp end of a Venetian gondolano stone goes unturned (or undropped, or uncatapulted) in the twisted little creatures' next installment.
Illustrated in a spare and simple style, Return of the Bunny Suicides is a collection of hilarious and outrageous cartoons that will appeal to anyone in touch with their evil side.

I Finally Get It!.......2007-09-17
This is my second suicidal bunny book. I bought them both in Rome in a very sophisticated, upscale store where I had been cackling for longer than was appropriate in Rome. (When in Rome, don't cackle in public, the Romans don't.)
Before I send this one off to my kid in college, I gave it one last look. And I got it. There's this drawing of a bunch of people running away from the shore line at the sight of a shark fin, and one tiny bunny in a swimfloat, eagerly padding into the water.
So on one level, there's every mad politician going ahead with some policy that everyone on the beach knows is crazy. On another level, that's all of us doing some nutso thing in spite of the world running around us in the opposite direction away from the visible shark. It reminds me of the hilarious novelRecycling Jimmy with the same weird British take on things and the same subversive sub-text.
I'm looking at this book one more time wondering which shark I'm heading towards. What about you?

Fantastic.......2005-09-30
A friend had to close the book because he was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe. Intelligent humor (for the slighlty morbid)that's not over anyone's head. Great for a coffee table or with a few beers. Simply fantastic.
As wonderful and politically incorrect as the first book.......2005-08-20
I found the first book on a trip to London - nasty, nasty bunnies full of ingenious ways to commit suicide - not pathetically but with plenty of attitude - just like Grommit and Kliban. Printed humor has become so PC - it is refreshing to see something this original and funny
On the Road to Oblivion... one more time.......2005-04-13
I loved "Return of the Bunny Suicides". If you liked the first book, "The Book of Bunny Suicides," you will most likely enjoy the sequel. The bunnies find even more creative ways to end their lives. It is funny and amusing, if you don't mind seeing cartoon bunnies execute both simple and complex plans to end their lives. Although the reader does not know why the bunnies are so willing to die, (s)he can certainly appreciate the bunnies' formulated deaths. The drawings are relatively simple, not too gory (yes, some decapitated heads but nothing graphic), and allows the reader to anticipate what happens instead of always giving the end picture.
Obviously this book isn't for everyone. But if you think you can appreciate the humor in suicidal cartoon bunnies, it's certainly worth flipping through.
By the way, I love bunnies and am against animal cruelty, but have enough of a sense of humor to laugh at silly things such as this.

Dark Hilarity Ensues.......2006-11-22
Having never encountered Bunny Suicides before, I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the relatively crowded bookstore when I found this 2007 Calendar.
The name and cover picture says it all. Be warned - this is comedy gold!
Sure it is a little dark, but in a really cute way. The bunny's expression is EVERYTHING. If the bunny was sad looking or depressed, it would ruin it... instead he exhibits a serene determination to kill himself every month of the year in very inventive ways.

Book Description
A dark, twisted, existential manifesto posing as a book of daily inspiration. Revolutionizing the best-selling genre, this thinking man's parody hijacks the format of daily affirmations but offers a different message: only in paradox, truth; only in darkness, light; only in affliction, affirmation. These "daily afflictions" offer readers inspiration, practical advice, and food for thought, as they navigate the jungle of existential terror that begins anew each day. We follow the fictional Brother Void on a spiritual journey, both profound and hilarious, into self, family, love, career, deathand, ultimately, Enlightenment. We learn to "listen to our inner critic," appreciate "the nurturing power of dysfunctional families," "love the wrong person," "succeed at failure," "embrace our inner corpse," and, finally, withstand the "agony of being connected to everything in the Universe." Part spiritual autobiography, part ironic meditation, this tragicomic guide to life's sublime predicaments will elevate and educate the spirit. The truth will set you free, Brother Void reminds us, but first it will hurt like hell.
Customer Reviews:
More Like the agony of laughing you a** off!.......2007-03-08
I love this little book. I run a drug treatment cener and invite staff in for a reading when they seem stressed. Sometimes we just flip to a random page, other times we look for what fits the mood. Just the right mix of wisdom and insanity!!
Putting the Cynical Into Words: Wise up!.......2006-11-18
This is a frank response to the depths of affliction, without a long-winded psychoanalysis. This is straight-forward and worth a read for some laughs and reflections.
My favorite passages are those of the dysfunctional family... for so long, I have tried to put into words what good can come out of having been brought up in this kind of family, and I am glad Boyd managed to put his finger on the lesson behind it all. He sheds light on positive outcomes that can result after someone goes through a fiery trial of affliction.
I don't particularly fancy the Love chapter here...however, I do give credit to the "Breaking up with Yourself" entry. I appreciate what he says about how people must break a pattern of failed love by realizing that the afflicted are the one's with the issues themselves. In other words, you should not expect of others what you are not yourself. We've heard it all before and it is just a matter of time, hopefully, for the stubborn to wake up, grow up, and quit passing through the revolving door that leads to nowhere worth talking to others about. I'd rather hear about those rare gems, like true love and wisdom put into life practice.
I hope this book not only entertains readers, but puts them into a more pro-active mode to change the patterns that keep them from rejoicing in the best that life can offer them in their afflictions. Learn the lessons, wise up, and encourage someone. Common sense...
Amusing and worth a passing read.......2006-10-01
unlike most self-help books this came across as something anyone could have written based on their real expiriences. It was like a sympathetic voice to those who feel lost. it does not demand you change the way you think or try to feel better. rather accepts lifes uncertain and sometimes unhappy moments. It says this is real and it's ok.
this book takes a humourous and sometimes insightful look at the depressing circumstances we all face from time to time. it refers to a good number of great thinkers and if you don't know where to start with them it may be of some use. i would not call it depressing, it seems to take such a light-hearted attitude towards its material that i doubt it was intended for any serious reflections.
i enjoyed reading it and i would definately recommend it to anyone who feels real life can be a let down and would like to laugh about it.
Deeply Desperate Satisfaction.......2006-01-04
I came across this book TWICE, in different people's bathrooms, during one desperate month. It made my suicidal life worth living. I am Loving my dark side. I Love this book.
If you are still getting superficial hope out of your affirmations, don't bother, but if you are ready for some reality, depth and true enlightenment, this can knock some of it into you.
Don't be lazy and don't buy this book!.......2005-10-08
Do yourself a favor and read the original writings by the authors quoted and interpreted by Boyd throughout "Afflictions". If you have done any reading of the original texts, you will see that he clearly skews their words and that his interpretations are frivilous and ridiculous. Too negative to be worth a read! For the real treasure dig into the classics which he is profitting upon.
