      Book Description

When I think of my beloved friend, the five words I think of are these: elegant, fashionable, generous, supportive, decent. I thank you, Halston.
      -- Liza Minnelli

No American designer since Claire McCardell has had such an impact on redefining fashion as Halston. His designs have experienced a tremendous revival and are as popular today as they were when he was alive. This is the first extensive look at Halston and his contributions to the fashion world, starting with his days as a milliner; through the explosion of his clothing lines and licensing deals, to the sale of his name and trademark and his theatrical designs for Liza Minnelli and the Martha Graham Dance Company.

This comprehensive survey of Halston's work is based on exclusive interviews with the people who knew and worked with Halston throughout his turbulent career. They include such celebrity Halston fans as Liza Minnelli, Katherine Graham, and Angelica Huston as well as industry insiders such as Marc Bohan, Stan Herman, Valerie Steele, and contemporary designers who claim Halston as an inspiration for their designs. Joe Eula and Kenneth Paul Block contribute their original sketches, as do manyy well-known fashion photographers.

With more than two hundred photographs Halston: An American Original is the quintessential volume for all fans of Halston and lovers of fashion.

Photographs are worth the price of the book alone! I haven't had a chance to read any of the text yet, but there's a lot of it, and a lot of STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHS! THE BEST PHOTO HISTORY OF HALSTON I'VE EVER SEEN. MANY THANKS TO THE AUTHORS FOR THIS WONDERFUL BOOK AND LABOR OF LOVE! LOTS OF HUGE, COLOR, AND RARE PHOTOS. THANKS!

A tasteful book that focuses on Halston's unique talent. He really was "An American Original."

      5 out of 5 stars a great salute to a great designer!.......2000-01-13

If you like fashion..you'll love this book. I have to agree with June Weir, former fashion editor of Vogue and Harpers, its a wonderful book that covers the designer's rise to success in great detail. The photos were exceptional!

1 out of 5 stars Nice Cover - Leave Shrinkwrap On.......1999-09-11

Roy Frowick Halston is rolling over in his grave faster than he ever did at Studio 54. The sorry accumulation of texts and stilted design make this a disappointment for Halston fans.

Does it address the body of work? No. We have had stupid anecdotal accounts galore, but this is a shame-faced attempt to be - WHAT? Coffee table tome? It cannot be. Too ugly. Some quality assessment of his millieu? Not a thing. Who are all of these parties involved? Embarrassing. Do not waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars ANOTHER MEDIOCRE BOOK ON A FASHION DESIGNER.......1999-08-28

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER UNDERWHELMING BIO on a Fashion Designer...Considering how important he was, the book is poorly edited, and cheaply done. It is well-researched though, but this hardly gives the reader a feeling for how this man changed the way women dress...I FELL ASLEEP!

5 out of 5 stars Shocking but juicy.......2005-01-09

This book is a no-holds barred portrait of the fashion designer, sometimes more than you want to know, but always gripping. Amazing amount of personal information, and its just as fascinating about the Studio 54 era as it is about the inside of the fashion industry. The Prisoner of Seventh Avenue sold his name for a few rupees and was locked out of his office. I read this in one sitting. Can't wait for the movie.

      3 out of 5 stars horrible halston.......2004-01-14

fairly dry reading of a fascinating life, not nearly as naughty or revealing as I expected, I understand that a movie is being made based on this book (Alex Baldwin is expected to portray Halston). Let's hope the movie has more bite than this biography.

      Book Description

As the creator of Jackie Kennedy's signature pillbox hat and the designer of choice for Liza Minelli in the 1970s, Halston (193290) was synonymous with American style: a modern, minimal yet glamorous look that encompassed everything from flowing caftans to ultrasuede dresses, to uniforms that lent panache to airline attendants and The Girl Scouts of America alike. Beginning his career in Chicago in the late 1950s, by 1972 Halston had been named 'the premier fashion designer of all America' by Newsweek magazine and was firmly established in New York; he counted such personalities as Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger among his friends and clients. Tall, charismatic, impeccably dressed, Halston personified the lofty ambitions and non-stop nightlife of the 1970s and early 1980s.This book, a visual anthology of Halston's life and legacy, includes previously unpublished catwalk photographs, rare archival photographs by Warhol, behind-the-scenes images of fashion shows and parties, sketches and specially commissioned photographs of Halston collections.

WOW. A knock-out! Bluttal has cumulated a splendid chronicle of the career of America's definitive fashion star, Roy Frowick Halston.

The book gathers and presents the photographic richness that you must have to know why Halston mattered and continues to. The sequence, arrangement, and ingenious categories all articulate the Halston passion for pure color, form and line that made him legend and attracted the star-studded clientele and the trademarking of his family name as a label still very much in evidence today, a decade after his death.

Wistful nostalgia over the Studio 54 years and the innocence of New York in those years are the only drawback of paging through this tome.

BRAVO BLUTTAL! Your fat fat fashion clutch should be on every gift list - the best fashion bargain of the year!!

4 out of 5 stars Gain Insights in a Fun Way.......2007-06-08

Reading and/or listening to this management story is a fun way to gain insight about people with whom we work and interact. I enjoyed the positive presentation about different perspectives and strenghts that people have and where the best place to deploy people with these attributes might be. The book encourages objective interactions that are win-win and non-judgemental.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting idea, so-so execution, terrible reading in the Audio book.......2006-05-21

Here we go again, another personality classification system and the author's premise that if you can stereo type people you can manage them more effectively. I don't see what this system has over other personality classification systems, such as MBTI (which has been around longer and more people seem to be familiar with).

The book tries to be humorous, but it just didn't work. The story telling wasn't bad, but I'd almost rather listen to nails on a chalk board then listen to the voices of the people reading this book.

Bottom line. I learned a little, but not much and I'd like my money back.

5 out of 5 stars A must in personality tests.......2005-07-31

I found Kingdomality (the test) almost 10 years ago. I took the test and was impressed by its accuracy. Since then, I have taken the online test 3 or 4 times more, with the same results.

So, when browsing on a local bookstore, I saw that the test creators had a book about Kingdomality, I did not hesitate and bought it.

What is Kingdomality (the test and the book) about? Well, it basically sustains that people can be grouped in 12 categories of personality types. These types are a function of how people see the world, what are their motivations, how do they interact with it. It's called Kingdomality because the personalities can be linked to "standard" professions in the Middle Ages (the time of Kingdoms...).

Those who have already taken the test and have enjoyed its simplicity and accuracy will enjoy this book. It will allow them to have a more comprehensive view of all the 12 types and how could they be used productively in a work environment.

For those who have not taken the test, but enjoy learning about new and different personality type tests, this is also a great book. The test concept is simple, and the types are clearly different among them. Still, I think I would advise all to take the test first and then read the book (doing otherwise might "contaminate" your test with your expectations for its results).

Well, as I said, I always got the same result in the test. So, in case you wonder, I seem to be a Merchant.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-06-23

This loosely medieval management parable about "a king at his wits' end" has several winning characteristics. First, it's relevant without taking itself too seriously. The light, self-effacing - even occasionally tongue-in-cheek - tone makes it easily readable. Authors Sheldon Bowles, Richard Silvano and Susan Silvano actively engage readers with a brief interactive online test that reveals your personality "guild type." Then they draw on their narrative's strength to move forward. Many books about emotional intelligence give readers little practical help. This one is fun, helpful and entertaining even though its guild classification system may need additional tweaking. Apparently designed primarily for workplace applications, it lacks the specificity of the more familiar Myers-Briggs test, which in comparison practically predicts how you'll want your eggs cooked a month from next Tuesday. Notwithstanding these minor limitations, we recommend this book to managers, coaches, consultants, EQ practitioners and those HR folks burdened with softening the Type A corporate hearts who run most organizations.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all managers.......2005-02-16

I had the chance to attend a book signing by Sheldon Bowles of his book Kingdomality. When he started to speak to a large crowd there was a table loaded with books and I wondered how many he'd sell. When he finished talking, we all rushed to the front to get a book and an autograph. By the time I got to him the books were all gone! Now I have a copy. This book contains so much insider information about how different people are motivated and why people behave as they do, that it seems like you become a mind reader. It's easy. It's accurate. It has given me the tools that make me a better manager, a better father, husband son and friend. In the paper here last weekend KINGDOMALITY was #1 on the bestseller list. Go to www.kingdomality.com and find out what it's all about. You won't be dissappointed! I predict KINGDOMALITY will be the killer book of 2005.

Graham was a highly sought after bachelor with a great career. Graham's life was smooth and orderly until he finds out he is a father. Graham's life is now upside down and has no clue how to be a father to his twins. Graham is also pretty ticked off to discover that the woman he fell in love with had only used him to get pregnant and than disappear from his life. The woman than died leaving Graham with two children. Holly has always had a crush on Graham, but for some odd reason he has avoided her like the plague. Graham is desperate for help and Holly is right there. Graham is attracted to Holly, but the similarities between Holly and the woman that tricked him years ago is uncanny. Hopefully, Graham can see that inside the women are nothing alike. Holly has a heart of gold and would be a terrific mother to the twins and wife for him. This is a great story about a man trying to cope with suddenly becoming a father and all the changes that parenthood bring-both good and bad.

5 out of 5 stars It's great to see reprints of these issues........2005-06-16

I enjoyed these Spider-Man tales when they were new, and I'm happy to see them available again. Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man (PPtSSM) was fresh and new, and it invigorated Spider Man's character, bringing a younger group of readers to Spider Man's other titles.

Someone may be interested in this book to follow the development of the storyline of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man (PPtSSM), or interested simply because it's Spider-Man. Particularly hot at the time were the Carrion issues.

A correction on the editorial description: The first issue of PPtSSM was dated December 1976 and this is when the title began, not 1968.

They have confused this title with two issues printed in 1968 called "The Spectacular Spider Man (tSSM)." Those two issues are rare collectibles and are not reprinted in the "Essential Peter Parker," but the second issue of tSSM is classic Spider-Man and Green Goblin - as well as Norman Osborn and Peter Parker at Thanksgiving dinner.

From out of Marvel's celebrated vault of past titles comes the Essential Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man Volume 1. As a fan of the Essential line, I had been looking forward to some more vintage web-slinging action, although future installments of the original Amazing Spider-Man (if numbers 5 and 6 are any indication) will probably only come out the same weeks as future movies. So imagine my surprise when I learned that January 2005 would see the release of the earliest issues of 1976's popular follow-up series (the first 31 in fact).

In his first spectacular outings, ol' web-head meets up with plenty of old foes (the pointy-toed Tarantula, the cadaverous Vulture, Kraven, Morbius, Scorpion, and even the long-not-really-awaited return of the Enforcers) as well as new ones like the photogenic Lightmaster, the psychedelic Hypno-Hustler (who has the 70's written all over him), and the trigger-happy Hitman (whose second and probably last appearance I had already seen in Essential Punisher). Some memorable storylines include Spidey teaming up with a neophyte hero from Arkansas in a pig costume (it's better than it sounds), assisting two former X-Men through the final chapter in the ill-fated history of the Champions supergroup (and why can't they have an Essential), a throwdown with the Maggia with the mysterious Moon Knight at his side, and a guest appearance by Daredevil who assists Spidey after the Masked Marauder blinds him (and how could horn-head POSSIBLY understand what he's going through?). The Spectacular series does a good job at keeping itself seperate from the Amazing series with unique story elements such as Flash Thompson's new romance with his savior from Vietnam, Sha Shan (see Essential Spider-Man 5) and the arrival of the White Tiger, a castoff from the discontinued black-and-white Deadly Hands of Kung Fu series (why doesn't it have an ... well you know).

At least I think that the storylines are seperate. The one thing that got in my way of totally enjoying these tales is that they constantly make reference to other series that I just don't know anything about. The only other Essential line in this time period currently is Howard the Duck and the X-Men (see reviews on this site for their fifth Essential for complaints about a similar problem) and many story threads just feel disconnected. The biggest offender by far is the climactic battle with Carrion, which spun from and basically spoils the ending to events from Amazing Spider-Man #'s 147-151, which I would imagine would be in the seventh Essential (so when's that third movie coming out?).

Nonetheless, these issues show the works of the best of Marvel's bullpen (Archie Goodwin, Bill Mantlo, Chris Claremont) and are known for being definite high points in an era that many have told me was fairly lean in good comic tales. Spidey fans will definitely want to swing on by the comic shop and pick this one up.

[Final note: I was finishing this book on a lunch break last week when one of my co-workers saw me and enquired about my latest, as he says, "phonebook of comics". I told him about the Amazing and the Spectacular series of Spider-Man and he asked me this question, "Why would they put out two different comics about the same character?". After much introspection I responded with my hypothesis: "Because Spider-Man's ... cool?".]

                5 out of 5 stars Something unexpected.......2005-02-16

For fans of the anime expecting the novels to continue the general storyline that the TV series took, the second Slayers novel can be kind of a shock. This novel chronicles the general events that take place early in the Slayers Next TV series, but things are so different from the TV series interpretation that you'd hardly recognise them.

But different doesn't necessarily mean bad and the differences are a refreshing change from what might be expected. In some ways this second novel feels like a rather darker novel than the first, though the trademark Slayers humour remains in abundance. Nevertheless, I felt that the novel was darker and more violent and it was an interesting way of viewing the Slayers universe.

4 out of 5 stars Not the Same as the Anime.......2004-12-22

In this 2nd "Slayers" novel in the series, we have the story that made up episodes 3-5 of the "Slayers Next" anime. This may come as a surprise to fans of the anime series who may have been expecting to see Amelia's arrival as seen in the "Slayers" anime. But that's not how Hajime-sensei wrote it. So the story doesn't have Amelia nor Zelgadis in it, which were used in the anime version.

For those who haven't seen the anime, the story tells of Lina and Gourry's arrival in the city of Atlas. Two mages are in conflict to lead the local Sorcerer's Guild after the previous leader disappeared. Tarim, one of the mages looking to take over the guild, looks to hire Lina and Gourry as body guards. The appearance of the two Mazoku (Seigram and Gio Gaia) ensures that Lina takes the job. However, as events progress, the disappearance of the former leader of the guild needs investigation and the results could have dire consequences for Lina and Gourry, especially with Mazoku around.

There was gore in the novel which obviously didn't show up in the anime. I was surprised by this for some reason and by the darker feel to this novel. There were some humor moments, but this is no where nearly as light as the anime put it. This is not a problem, but I note it to the anime fans.

Also, while the principle characters were the same (save the 2nd Mazoku) and the overall elements were the same, the story in the novel plays out much differently to get to a very similar end to the anime. As such, the novel has more interest in that we don't know how things will get to their ultimate end. That is a good thing. However, Lina's great power doesn't come through the novel's pages as well as they do in the anime. And I found it interesting that Hajime-sensei makes Lina more human in that she experiences fear, something she rarely did in the anime.

Bottom line: quite a bit different from the "Slayers Next" episodes, but a good read nevertheless. "Slayers" fans will want to read the novel that was the basis of the "Slayers Next" episodes.
