5 out of 5 stars A marvellous view of an ancient culture.......1999-07-01

Bob Powell's paintings are extraordinary and luminous, conveying both the ethereal nature and the earthiness of this ancient realm. The introduction by Roberto Vitali is a wonderful tour de force. He sums up the artist's work: " In some cases I am led to think that his documentary paintings are imaginary, while those that are imaginary seem documentary."

5 out of 5 stars Rob's works are truly art ... his book ... an appetizer.......1999-06-18

The magic and mystery of the Kingdom Lo, high in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal on the border with Tibet ... this is as close as you can get without being there. More than a coffee table book, this book won't let you rest until you have stood and gazed upon the majesty which provoked the works. Rob's works are on display at the Smithsonian through September 26.

    Book Description

Ananda K. Coomaraswamy (1877-1947) was a pioneer in Indian art history and in the cultural confrontation of East and West. A scholar in the tradition of the great Indian grammarians and philosophers, an art historian convinced that the ultimate value of art transcends history, and a social thinker influenced by William Morris, Coomaraswamy was a unique figure whose works provide virtually a complete education in themselves. Finding a universal tradition in past cultures ranging from the Hellenic and Christian to the Indian, Islamic, and Chinese, he collated his ideas and symbols of ancient wisdom into the sometimes complex, always rewarding pattern of essays. The Door in the Sky is a collection of the author's writings on myth drawn from his Metaphysics and Traditional Art and Symbolism, both originally published in Bollingen Series. These essays were written while Coomaraswamy was curator in the department of Asiatic Art of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where he built the first large collection of Indian art in the United States.

5 out of 5 stars This book is incredible!!.......2003-06-02

This is an amazingly elaborate story of a young sorceress in the early 13th century. Carol Lynn Stewart writes with astounding depth of knowledge and gives the reader a real feel for life in the medieval times. The magic is so well woven in her story that you can almost believe that this truly happened.

The century is early 1200's. The inquisition is making its mark across the lands. To be born of magic is to ensure your death. Thus young Mariana, daughter of the Baron de Reuilles, must make her way carefully as she is awakened to her powers. Her mother died when she was but a babe thus her father's mother and his sister step in to help raise and nurture Mariana as a god-fearing child.

But Mariana is shunned by some of her people as the death of her mother, Therese, lingers in their minds and they too wonder if she will also become the witch they believed Therese to be. Thus friends for Mariana were obviously far and few between, until she stumbles on the young squire who aspires to be a knight, Richard de la Guerche. It is through his kindness and gentle ways that a strong bond forms between the two.

However time passes, and Richard is called home. When Mariana learns that Richard has been promised to another her hopes of a love match with him are crushed. Determined to move on Mariana meets his fathers long time friend and physician Ibrahim who was once in love with her mother. He promises her mother that he will bring Mariana into her truth birth right as the `lady of the stone.'

A year of training passes and finds a new man entering Mariana's life. Henri de Baucais a knight of Christ and a soldier for the inquisition. On a mission at the Baron de Reuilles he meets Mariana and falls in love. But the path to marriage is not so simple as the Baron de Reuilles new wife; Ysabel is a jealous woman and seeks the aid of magic to lure him away.

As you can see the dynamics just keep growing with this book. The novel is so intricately involved with many of the secondary characters as they too hold stories of their own. I found this book to be completely fascinating and depth of description well written as I did not feel I was being bored by them but rather seeing the picture more clearly.

As the book carries on in its many twists and turns, young Richard, now a Knight of Breton returns. Leaving his betrothed at the altar he is determined to give Mariana one last try. If she is truly in love with Henri de Baucais, then he will not interfere. But Richard will not give up until he has his answer.

Mariana is so well raised through this book. You feel and experience her transformation from the young naive victim of circumstances; to the mature confident sorceress she was meant to be. And regardless of the great leader she is to become she maintains her humility.

I also found both of the men, Richard and Henri, to have their own source of appeal. And was at some points unsure which way Mariana would go. But as the plot unfolds and the big picture becomes clearer so do the answers to the many questions this book places in your mind. Again, this was an amazing book that definitely makes you think, but does not leave you hanging. I absolutely recommend this book and give Carol Lynn Stewart many, many high praise for an amazing first novel!! WOW!

4 out of 5 stars The Romance for non-Romance and Romance readers alike.......2001-02-10

A swiftly told story of history and magic, gender-bending and witches, intrigue, family secrets and -- yes -- romance. Great characters cut through a rich landscape with twists and turns that make this hard to put down (or turn off). I LOVED it.

4 out of 5 stars Door in the Sky Opened My Eyes.......2001-02-10

Carol Lynn Stewart brings me to a world I've never seen before and makes it a palpable, living and breathing place. What a page turner! I fell in love with the characters and am awed by the deftness with which the author wove together my heart strings and kept tugging at them with never-ending twists and turns in the plot. The author clearly knows her stuff about the time and century in which her characters live (and I do mean live!) and not only did she provide a great read, I learned a lot too.

Hip clothing brand Silas & Mariaworks with a wide range of artists and designers across media to keep the label's identity evolving. With an irreverent approach that refuses to take itself too seriously, this creative outpouring -- brochures, catalogs, stickers, an interactive website, and the famous Silas dolls designed by James Jarvis -- has become the trademark of the brand.

Set around a loose narrative, this volume includes works ranging from photography, illustration, and 3D pieces to creative writing and design -- created by a diverse pool of talent including Ben Sansbury, Lizzie Finn, Fergus Purcell, James Jarvis, Clare Shilland, and Will Sweeny. All key contributors have produced work exclusively for this project.

5 out of 5 stars Wizard: Jim Lee, Millennium Edition.......2006-12-14

With Jim Lee's well-deserved, wide-reaching popularity, I'm a little surprised more people aren't writing reviews for this(!).
A 7-page interview/biography kicks this amazing book off; a fascinating summary of Lee's successful career. The 1st 3rd of the book mainly consists of previously published articles & interviews detailing just about everything we could need to know about this comics superstar's present & past. Details of recent DC projects seems to dominate, but Image & Marvel details are given too.

The 1st half of this volume finishes with random artwork & sketches, as well as a detailed checklist of Lee's entire body of work. Some of this artwork is pretty hard to find. Some of it's in pencil; some in ink; some in color; and still some in other media.

The 2nd half of this work is phenomenal: it's a collection of *every* cover, pinup, and poster Lee has drawn to date (2004)! Everything from Alpha Flight to Superman, and from independent comics to Heroes Reborn is displayed in full color. Designs for action figures, drawings from when he was a kid, finished posters & Wizard covers- all are included, reproduced at various sizes, on super slick, glossy white paper. His entire career in 250+ pages! My highest recommendation!

In short: Buying this book for the art alone, we're already getting more than our money's worth. The interviews detailing his amazing career seem like an extra special bonus. Now if I could only convince them to make a John Byrne, Millennium Edition! :)

                                  ok, two comments:

"Top it all off with an amazing cover featuring Batman with Wolverine and you have the ultimate official Jim Lee event..."

funny thing is that the cover is just a composite of two previously published images
"WOW! I have those two images of Batman and Wolverine separately! But ....now they're TOGETHER! Holy crap!"

                                  and

"that only the editors of Wizard: The Comics Magazine could publish!"

The editors of Wizard would publish Rob Liefeld's feces, so that isn't really a reason to buy this book

I absolutely love Jim Lee, and helped put together the check list in the book, and this book has it all.

It has Jim's entire history in it and a checklist of every piece he has had a hand in. And the best part of this book is its gallery. It has the cover of every single comic Lee has ever done in it! From Alpha Flight to Xmen to his current Superman, every cover is in here! Its beautiful.

You cannot call yourself a Lee fan, or a real comic fan, if you dont own this wonderful book, from perhaps the most influential artist of the past 20 years.

Selected by bestselling author Joey Green, a collection of 400 quotes by Marx and Lennon, juxtaposed to reveal their hilarious similarities No, not THAT Marx and Lenin! Heres a much funnier and artistically talented pair from history. Revolutionaries in their own rights, John Lennon and Groucho Marx did not share much common ground with their Communist namesakes, or even with each other. Where they do overlap is through their very humorous and irreverent takes on life. Editor Joey Green brings together a collection of more than 400 Groucho Marx and John Lennon sayings, juxtaposed to emphasize their hysterical and unexpected similarities

4 out of 5 stars Indoctrinating a new generation of devout Marxist-Lennonists.......2005-11-02

I never bought the Fireside Theater comedy album "How Can You Be In Two Places At Once When You're Not Anywhere At All?," but I was greatly impressed by the cover shot. It showed that particular gang of lunatics posing like they were standing on top of Lenin's tomb in Red Square in Moscow beneath posts of Groucho Marx and John Lennon (which the n's in Lennon's name backwards like they were Cyrillic letters). By the time I saw that album cover I already knew that I was a devout Marxist of the Brothers kind and the idea that John Lennon was more worthy of emulation than Vladimir Lenin was pretty much fully formed in my mind as well. Ever since the names of Marx and Lennon have been linked in my mind, and apparently Joey Green, best known as the inventor of wacky uses for brand-name products, is on the same wavelength as well.

"Marx & Lennon: The Parallel Sayings" juxtaposes sayings by Groucho Marx from his movies and assorted writings from those by John Lennon from his songs and assorted writings. For example, in "The Coconuts," Groucho said, "One for all and all for me and me for you and three for five and six for a quarter," while in "I Am the Walrus," Lennon sang, "I am me as you are he as you are me and we are all together."

                                  Eerie, huh?

More than a Fireside Theater album cover what this book will remind you of those comparisons between Jesus and Elvis that pop up all over the place (You know, the ones that remind us Jesus said, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" while Elvis sang, "Don't be cruel"). Fortunately Green is treading on less sacred ground with this collection. Plus he comes up with about 400 of these parallel sayings, which range from the wistfully wry to the potentially profound. But mostly this book is fun and a timely reminder that pop culture icons speak more eloquently and more truthfully than politicians or pundits (the latter seem to be doing more talking than the former these days).

Yoko Ono provides an introduction to the book to give her blessing (Is this a counterpunch to Paul McCartney's attempt to have all of those Beatle songs now be listed as having been written by McCartney & Lennon rather than Lennon & McCartney? You decide), and then the first chapter, "Parallel Sayings, Parallel Lives" looks at the coincidental similarities between the two men, born 50 years apart, both in October, both the witty and sarcastic leaders of two of the most recognizable groups of the 20th century. The fact that they admired each other just makes it all that much more interesting. Besides, if I were still a student I would just be dying to find a way to use one of these sets of parallel sayings as the attention getting quotes at the start of a paper.
