In sickness and in health, as Diary of a Djinn reveals, the body is a magic bottle that can sometimes fall into the wrong hands, until the all-knowing djinn comes to the rescue.

I Dream of Gini.......2005-02-01

I liked the story of a woman who goes floating around "from body to body" like the evil spirit in the Denzel washington thriller "Fallen"--except of course she's not evil, just kind of languid and dreamy in an Anais Nin kind of way. The late Susan Sontag gave this novel high praise. and reading it you can see why it would appeal both to Sontag's high intelligence and her love of the sensual and elegant. In a way, the heroine's affair with a married man, and her encounters with his soignee mother, the Princess, are the materials of a Henry James study in contrasting cultures. We warm to the Princess for her beautifully understated way of handling everything, as we did Isak Dinesen. In one amusing episode she has to sit in an uncomfortable chair while listening to a speech. "She sat upright and did not stir. Only towards the end of three hours did I notice a slight shifting in her seat. She said, 'If I find the person who designed this chair, I'll throw it in his face.'" However, her son Hare is pretty innocuous and the heroine's love affair with him is pretty lukewarm compared to her miscellaneous observations about the princess.

The Readers Digest used to have a running feature where you could write in and tell all about "The Most Unforgettable Character You Ever Met." In this book, the unforgettable one is the princess. And yet everyone has a story, an engrossing one.

When the heroine tries to buy an air conditioner, you can see why people think Gini Alhadeff a fine writer. "Reason epople did not quibble over the noise an air conditioner made--one so promisingly named Quietmaster. It must mean, I thought, that other brands were even noisier. sought once again to extract from Mr. Lin an opinion as to which brand might be quieter." Don't you love the concision of that well chosen verb, "extract"? "But he went into his philosophical dissertation once again, starting with 'Every machine different...' and ending with '...not possible to know.' But then he had a sudden illumination. 'Machine very noisy because room very quiet--you writer.'"

Okay, so he sounds a bit like Charlie Chan, still it's interesting, unlike so many novels written today.

Hat Pin Bible.......2005-12-14

This 200 page compendium complete with photographs, illustrations, history (including legal rulings and laws regarding the hat pin's use as a weapon), etc. is the hat pin fancier's bible.

The hatpin and hatpin holder collectors bible.......1998-10-05

This superb book will interest the collector and historians alike. It is a great tribute to Lillian Baker, the queen of hatpin collectors. She passes on her tremendous knowledge and experience with the aid of a well catalogued album. This shows colour plates of many hatpins indexed by the different types of materials used. Gold, silver, brass, glass, porcelain, ivory and many other hatpins adorned with diamonds, pearls, amethysts, etc show what a diversity of collections are possible. They are catalogued by type, manufacturer, style or period over the past 150 years or so. A historical perspective on their development shows how they were made and the many types of legitimate fixings. Examples of fake hatpins are also shown. There is also a similar catalogue of a vast range of hatpin holders and vanity sets also in colour. The book is worth the money for the pictures alone and is what you would expect of the author who managed to persuade friends with rare and expensive or unusual hatpins and holders to allow them to be catalogued. There is even an explanation of the origins of pinmoney and the need for hatpin to be one word not two. The only disappointment is the lack of any indicator of values, as this was also the authors area of expertise. This book is unlikely to be repeated so buy it now - it will be a collectors piece soon.

One of the most pressing problems now facing commercial lawyers is to explain the principles which determine when a remedy is proprietary and when it is not. This book provides a broad overview of the subject. It examines representative business transactions which commonly give rise to legal or equitable interests in personal property. Its aim is to distil the fundamental principles understanding the relevant legal analyses. The result is to provide a more theoretically rigorous analytical framework for proprietary interests in personal property. The practical advantages of this are potentially twofold: new commercial transactions can be more effectively structured; in addtion, disputes between contracting parties can be more reliably resolved. Two features of the analysis are significant. The first is the elastic nature of proprietary interests in personal property. Although proprietary interests can be broadly classified as ownership or security interests, these are relative concepts which may be affected significantly by impinging contractual arrangements. The second feature is the necessary and intimate integration of law and equity. Equitable proprietary interests are remarkabldy prevalent; this prevalence is directly related to the apparent ease with which equity is able to convert particular personal obligations into proprietary interests.

First impression of this CD-Rom is that there's too little information. It took only a few minutes to go thru.
This is a commercial real estate transaction. Everyone knows or at least thinks that there are more than residential real estate transactions involved.
I'm in residential real estate now and trying to expand my field into commercial arena. This cd-rom was unfortunately not useful and not worth for money.
Books like "How to suceed in commercial real estate", "Commercial real estate investing", and "Secrets of millionaire real estate developer" (if you are interested in development too), are much worth to purchase.

One technical thing. Audio quality of some footages was poor.
